My Opinion:
Groningen is sertenly not a big metropole in Europe. In the Netherlands its more ore less the cultural capital of the North with lots of university sudents, musea and good architecture , but Leeuwarden (Ljouwert) is defenatly thé skyscraper-city of the area.
The skyline of Groningen is now a mixture of low buildings with a few 50+ "scrapers" spread over the city map. Boring, most people would say. But there are lots of plans to make 2 clusters of skyscrapers (behind the central sation and around the new stadium). In 10 years the skyline hopefully deserves a 8/10. Now I'm afraid it's not more than 6.5/10
Kaneda June 4th, 2004, 12:00 PM Looks much bigger then a city of only 180.000 people, not much of a skyline though, but it looks like it will come, with those great towers that are planned. :okay: 6/10
Eisso June 4th, 2004, 12:42 PM @ Kaneda: Groningen is a very compact city. There is not much space left to build outside,, becouse they have reached the city borders. There are now plans for more residental skyscrapers inside the city at empty spots to create an even more compact city.
A few of these plans:

ayelt June 5th, 2004, 02:22 PM I see no skyline... But Groningen is a great city. 6/10
james2390 June 5th, 2004, 06:32 PM It seems like all the cities in the Netherlands have stunning architecture. This one especially. 8/10
rayman June 5th, 2004, 06:54 PM those proposed buildings look way cool but they haven't been build yet so for now the skyline is a 4 out of 10
Schroedinger's Cat June 8th, 2004, 10:36 AM 5/10
SeeMacau June 9th, 2004, 04:35 PM Nice city .. with some wonderful plan buildings
7/10
The Messiah June 9th, 2004, 05:42 PM This is not a good skyline at all,but if some plans will continue wich are mentioned above,Groningen really will have the potential to have a great skyline:)
For now.. 5.0/10
SoboleuS June 10th, 2004, 11:33 AM Nice proposals, but the skyline isn't great - a few historic towers and some ugly blocks... 5/10
skyperu34 June 12th, 2004, 08:13 PM great city..........7, much better in the future
flex August 12th, 2004, 04:30 PM i love the city but the skyline will be bether in the future for now a 6/10
FCG January 10th, 2005, 03:48 PM MUCH better in the futher.

Now the city get's a 6, in 5 years it get's a 7.5
Wssps May 22nd, 2005, 09:01 PM why don't they make the emmatower a few meters higher? 152 meter :) then it is the highest building in the netherlands, would be great

ParraMan November 22nd, 2005, 12:09 AM ^^ Totally agree with you ZW038, it is a real shame that residential areas in dutch cities so often look the same, however the majority of those wijken were built when there was a great need for housing quickly. Now at least individuality and good design has come out on top and NL is a great leader for the world in that regard.
Groningen is not at all ugly, with a huge collection of old outstanding architecture, and an excellent sprinkling of modern design. It doesn't really have the skyscrapers yet, but they are certainly on their way, with fantastic designs too.
Goningen is an excellent cool, urban and unique city (mostly due to the university and being the only large city in a large area). Its skyline at the moment is not much- gets a 6 from me.
www.Rotterdam.nl November 22nd, 2005, 12:22 AM ATM I will give it a 3. But Groningen will get a beautifull sky-line in the feauture. If that 150+ tower is build, I will revisit Groningen for sure.
The historic center is worth visiting for people who have never been there (looks like Amsterdam but much smaller). It's a sort of Utrecht from the North.
marpa November 22nd, 2005, 03:29 PM 7,5/10 on encouragement ;)

reinhart87 October 3rd, 2006, 09:29 PM that's a bit of introduction... anyway, i find the city of groningen as very compact in size and very hmm... friendly for pedestrians and bikers. the city's skyline may be a tad boring but some buildings have unique designs so it balances out each other. i think groningen should remain the same because it is loved by the citizens the way it is.. maybe some 100+ m buildings here and there would be nice.. in all, i would give this city which i will be living in the next 3 years a 6/10

Oh, and I rate my city a 7 for now (would have been a 6 a couple of years ago, and will probably be higher once all upcoming projects have been finalized).
Sebastian21 November 25th, 2007, 11:22 PM Yeah, there is alot of charm in those older buildings, but the skyscrapers (commie blocks) are sure ugly. 3.5

Broda October 28th, 2010, 01:32 PM I can't believe that people give this skyline 7 or more (or 6 for that matter). There is basically no skyline...7 for me is for instance Warzaw, 8 is Frankfurt, 9 is Shanghai and 10 is Hong Kong...
this is not more than a 4.
Cpt.Iglo October 28th, 2010, 04:24 PM @Broda: I agree with you that this isn't the most beautiful skyline, but how can you say that this isn't basically a skyline? I see a (small) skyline in this pictures:

You have got to be joking man! I agree with Broda.
I can see practically 4 or 5 buildings there, which are higher than the trees. That's no skyline, it's more like a bush-line or something.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Groningen is an ugly city or something, but in this way we could post every village on this "rate my skyline" section.
An example: The apartment-complex below (on the photo) was built near my neighborhood, in Bucharest. There are 7 apartment blocks of 25 stories. That doesn't make the skyline of Bucharest worth to be rated with 7 or 8. That would be just ridiculous, compared to what Broda also said: "Warsaw is a 7, Franfurt is an 8, Hong Kong...", etc.etc.

Ok. Maybe you're right. But it's 2/10. If we are generous. :)
Cpt.Iglo January 21st, 2011, 10:39 AM ^^ I agree with that.
I didn't say that this small skyline is worth a 7,6 or 5. But you can't say that there isn't a skyline.
Eric Offereins January 21st, 2011, 11:07 PM There is just too much sky in the skyline. ;)
Cpt.Iglo March 8th, 2011, 09:55 AM At this time, Groningen has a population of around 190,000. (november 2010)

Kulla March 8th, 2011, 03:17 PM I think that most peopel are forgetting that only 180,000 peopel live in this city. Yet they bring up ridicilous cities as Hong Kong and compare it to Groningen. Which is crazy! You cant compare two cities which vary so much in population. The Hong Kong population is well over 7 million. So just using common sense the skyline of Hong Kong should be much much more bigger.
@ Evil78 I have seen the skyline of Bucharest and its nothing to brag about. Its more or less the same as that of Groningen, but with a huge difference. Groningen isnt the capital of a country where as Bucharest is.
That being said 7/10 for this beautifull and changing skyline. Hope to see more and more skyscrapers in the future here.

I totally agree with this. if you compare Groningen to NYC or Hong Kong, this is a 1, or maybe a 2.
But if you compare this with other citys in Holland, i think it's well worth an 7 ;)

Clone May 28th, 2011, 02:45 AM Small skylines can be very beautiful. I don't get why people judge based on number of buildings. I don't like this skyline, since I don't like the buildings and the setting of the buildings, but not because of the size or number of buildings. The last building seems to be a step in the right direction, tough.
I give it a 5

Too bad it's all scattered, tall buildings being too few and far between, but on the bright side all it takes is a couple dozen more towers, and we're getting there! (my glass always is half full :D)
