This is the neighbourhood where I grew up in , I lived in house to the left of this photo (only slightly out of the frame).

I used to go through that park on the right every morning when I walked to school

It makes me feel so sad looking at photos of Baghdad. It's a mixture of nostolgia and sorrow

no its a mosque in baghdad, none of the palaces were turned into an embassy...if you're referring to the Al Faw Palace, then that was turned into 'camp victory' :)

Wow Baghdad is a great looking city. I am especially impressed with the traditional architecutre, and by the amount of greenery, parks, and gardens.

This has the potential to become one of the greatest cities in the Middle East. Baghdad is blessed with a rich history, the fertile Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and national oil resources. Huge potential.

no plans for more bridges. there are already 13 or 14? and the congestion problem is not on the bridges but in the roads and lack of parking spaces...

what baghdad needs is a proper subway network and the abolition of cars from the centre.

haha no it's been there for quite a long time! it was built for the Arab Summit in 1995 but was used by the former regime as a headquarters...it was only recently that it was converted into a criminal court

they are radio masts for line of sight relays.... found all over Iraq, usually about 300m high.

^^ I see. sorry for sounding abit ignorant, but what are they used for and by whom?

Some are owned by ITPC (Iraqi telecom and Postal Company). Some are relay stations for the state radio / TV broadcasters, others are owned by the military.

they are to allow the transmission of directional signals over a long distance e.g. via microwave directional relay, and its quicker and cheaper than laying a cable all the way to the middle of the desert where bandwidth requirements are low...

its kind of old fashioned really, not that useful nowadays, but still has some uses I suppose in a country that doesn't own its own satellites (and yes, even nigeria, congo etc... own satellites.. its NOT rocket science to buy a couple, but Iraqis are dumb with these things)

I do think Baghdad clock looks a bit tacky too.. something you would build in a theme park.

The only reason it was printed on the back of the 100 dinars is that because it was one of the very few visible construction projects that were completed right after the first gulf war. It was a part of a government effort to give the impression that something was being constructed.. a clock ! because that's what you really need after having half of your capital carpet-bombed.. you would need a clock! (btw, the clock was completed before the reconstruction of the mamoon telecom tower.. so they couldn't add that one on the back of the newly introduced 100 dinars notes)

likewise with the double story bridge (they used to call it Saddam bridge), I don't know what it's called now.. it was added on the back of the 50 dinar notes.

^^ I never realised Baghdad had so many monuments that are definently worth seeing, are they all surrounding each other or in different parts of Baghdad?

Btw i have seen this picture before and have always wondered why there is a Greek flag next to the Iraqi, does anybody know?

al-mutanabbi street is looking great, im glad to see all the book-stores/cafes thriving :)

it is heartening to see mutanabi street renovated in the original style after the terror attack which destroyed it.

It is the cultural heart of Baghdad, and much more effort should be made to improve the sarai area. its current state is still deplorable... perhaps they can renovate old baghdad before building a 100k seater "white elephant" stadium?

thank you for backing me up bigdreamer! Some of the "unrealdreamers" on this forum really need a wake up call about the reality of Iraq... and to be honest the main issues are with society and discipline (above street cleanliness issue), and the other is about land allocation / banking system (to get construction and industrial work going).

Neither problem is being dealt with by the "baghdad powers" who spent decades learning only how to collect their social security cheques.

They look like university students not high school.

iraqis in iraq look older than they really are.

Some of them look young but the majority look old, i think its what they wear and how they behave that makes someone young seem old.
