Murcia, a city in south-eastern Spain, is the capital and most populous city of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, and the seventh largest city in the country, with a population of 436,870 inhabitants in 2009 (about one third of the total population of the Region). The population of the metropolitan area was 638.217 in 2008. It is located on the Segura River, in the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, noted by a mild climate with hot summers, tepid winters and scarce precipitation.
Murcia was founded by the Moors in 825 CE with the name Madinat Mursiya and is now mainly a services city and a university town. Highlights for visitors include the Cathedral of Murcia and a number of baroque buildings, renowned local cuisine, Holy Week processions, works of art by the famous Murcia sculptor Francisco Salzillo, and the Fiestas de Primavera (Spring Festival).
The city, as the capital of the comarca Huerta de Murcia, is known as Europe´s Orchard due to its long agricultural tradition and as a fruits, vegetables and flowers producer and exporter.

Elle est située à 350 km au sud-est de Madrid et à 35 km de la mer Méditerranée. Avec une population de 436 870 habitants, c'est la septième ville d'Espagne. Son agglomération compte 638.217 habitants
Elle est située à 43 mètres d'altitude, dans la vallée de Segura, et est arrosée par le fleuve Segura. Son régime pluvial méditerranéen, caractérisé par de faibles débits mais de forte crues, comme celles de 1946, 1948, 1973 ou de 1989 qui ont inondé la capitale murcienne.
Le plus connu de Murcie est son potager qui recouvre une grande partie de la commune. C'est une ville de plaine mais avec des collines qui entourent la vallée du Segura, en soulignant celle de Monteagudo, où on trouve un château arabe du Moyen-Âge.
Le territoire de la commune de Murcie est composé de 54 districts et de 28 quartiers.
Histoire
Murcie a été fondée sous le nom de Mursiya durant l'année de 831 par l'émir d'Al-Andalus Abderramán II.
Les Arabes, profitant du cours du fleuve Segura proche de la ville, ont construit un réseau hydraulique complexe (canaux d'irrigation, canalisations, barrages, aqueducs) qui a donné sa prospérité à la ville. Ils sont les précurseurs de l'actuel système d'irrigation du potager à partir de la rivière Segura.
Jusqu'à la seconde moitié du XIe siècle, Murcie est un royaume indépendant. Elle est reconquise ensuite par Alphonse X de Castille ou le Sage et intégrée à la Castille. En 1296, elle passe à la Couronne d'Aragon puis, par le traité de Torrellas en 1304, revient à la Castille en tant que capitale du royaume de Murcie.
Murcie est la ville natale du célèbre mystique Ibn Arabî (1165, Murcie - 1240, Damas).
En 1651, Murcie est rasée par la fureur du fleuve Segura qui fait plus de 1 000 morts.
Depuis la création des provinces au XIXe siècle, elle est la capitale de la province de Murcie et, depuis 1982, de la région éponyme.
Ces dernières années, Murcie a connu une croissance démographique spectaculaire, qui en a fait la septième commune la plus peuplée d'Espagne.
