Algarve the new Hollywood?
Picture Portugal plans to make the Algarve the new Hollywood film and production centre and has announced Algarve will be the location for 11 major international film productions in the short term.
Joaquim de Almeida, film actor and founding partner of the Algarve Film Commission (AFC), and Manuel da Luz Mayor of Portimão first floated the idea 3 years ago and aim to make Algarve an attractive filming location for international production companies.
Paulo Pereira, AFC chairman said the commission, the local councils via its Municipal Marketing Company Portimão Turis, and a private film production company, Bartholomeu Digital Cinema, owned by producer Artur Curado have joined hands to offer a turnkey solution to US producers interested in film locations in Portugal.
The group have produced a presentation pack to attract the likes of Universal Studios and CBS Paramount as partners for the project. Through the Local Authority the group have secured access to a 100ha site with plans for a production studio, a cinema complex and a theme park and located near the Parque de Exposições Portimão Arena exhibition estate.
The group depends on Joaquim de Almeida, one of Portugal’s best known film producers and an actor with an international reputation to attract UK and US film interests. Picture Portugal plans to make 11 major films at a cost of some €90 million. One of the group’s trump cards is the Algarve brand name which it says, is one of Portugal’s best known destinations worldwide, offering excellent access to an extensive range of filming scenery, historical and cultural assets and located just three hours south of Lisbon and two from Seville where film equipment supplies can be found.
