Many of the pictures didn’t turn out well as I was using an old digital camera that either had a focusing problem or chose on its own for the delay as to when to take the picture and most days were cloudy, but it’s what I have.
I spent most of my time in the south-western suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia and was very impressed at how developed and modern it is. Northern Mexico is going through a hard time now and on the news and we constantly hear of Mexico being a drug infested mess, and there are big problems going on, but Monterrey is a great city.
There are areas of the city to stay out of at night, but the areas to be in at night were great. The clubs and bars in downtown Monterrey were good, went to a few places across from, what I think is called the Macroplaza, which is the main park in downtown Monterrey. Another night I spent in the northern suburb of San Nicolas, different type of neighbourhood that I am used to, some parts looked at bit sketchy but never felt un-safe. But overall the suburb of San Pedro is very impressive – full of beautiful homes, modern strip malls, and very modern infrastructure over a large area, with a population of 120,000. San Pedro had the feel and look of a very modern and wealthy first world city type suburb.
Monterrey has pockets of poverty, which is notable on the side of the mountains, but in many areas, directly beside them have pockets of luxury neighbourhoods. But also spread throughout are middle-class neighbourhoods, so overall the gap between rich and poor wasn’t so drastic.
A few notable differences are the design of residential lots, as I found it very rare to see a house with a front lawn. Most houses are either right up to the sidewalk, gated with a courtyard or walled in, and furthermore the bars on the windows stood out. Also the City didn’t really seem to have a central business district core as downtown Monterrey is based on historical areas whereas the modern hi-rise office towers are spread throughout the suburbs.
Overall it was a good place to visit, the people are friendly, the food is good, the nightlife is good, the scenery is great and I looking forward to going to back.
