SM Arena
Adjacent to the south parking building, a two-hectare area has been allocated for the site of a 16,000-capacity multi-purpose SM Arena. It will be designed also by Arquitectonica, which did the American Airlines Arena.

The SM Arena is expected to be the venue of choice for sporting events, concerts and entertainment shows. It is set to rival the 50-year old Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

i really hope so... anyway..i believe Mall of Asia complex where the SM ARENA is located is part of the multi billion dollars Entertainment City..

^^ An Olympic size stadium, a new aquatics center and other core Olympic venues (Manila really needs a proper Velodrome) to form an Olympic Park.

A 60,000 seater minimum, but thinking of Manila's population, I'd go for 80,000+ (even if it is used for the weekly mass in front of 100,000+, there's the potential of large boxing bouts, 100.000+ concerts and the occasional large football game.

Then bid and host an Asian games as a test to see if you can go for the real deal, an Olympics.

^^There are plans to construct an actual stadium (not an arena)at the Bagong Nayong Pilipino E-City right across from the Mall of Asia complex where SM Arena will be located.

Lord David
April 13th, 2010, 10:47 AM
It better be Olympic size. A retractable roof is a bonus, though not necessary. Being upgradable helps too. So you got like a 60,000 seater for a future Asian Games, that gets upgraded by 10,000 or 20,000 seats in preparation for an Olympics.

according to reliable sources...

SM Corp. is now fastracking the construction of this NBA-type arena.. it is targeted to finish end of 2011 to early part of 2012.. why is this so, it is because it will be launched and used for the 2012 college basketball season..

excited to see this..

I wish the design was for a bigger Arena though. Even the Araneta Coliseum's size is too small for Ateneo-La Salle games. What more for international events like a a FIBA tournament or a huge concert.

Obviously, the SM group decided to go for a more manageable and marketable size. It would be easier to attract events for an arena that size.

In any case, I'm glad we have another option than the aged (yes, I meant aged not aging) Araneta Coliseum.

red_eagle_1982
September 30th, 2010, 10:08 AM
They say this will be bigger than Araneta Coliseum... I hope so.

Perhaps not. According to Wikipedia (admittedly, not THAT reliable), Araneta seats 25,000. In fact, for the latest Ateneo-La Salle game, the figures were in the 23,000 mark.

The SM Arena, however, will seat 16,000 only.

I agree with you though, I wish the SM Arena would be bigger. I'm tired of braving the EDSA traffic and the horrendous parking situation at and near the Araneta Coliseum for all those Ateneo AND San Beda games (not versus, ok? hehe. I know, my teams don't play for the same league... anymore).

filcan
September 30th, 2010, 03:42 PM
^^Probably the figure of 16,000 is for a rink configuration where there is no seating on the arena floor. When in a basketball court configuration there is seating on the arena floor so SM Arena could still have the same capacity as Araneta.

MOA to host NBA preseason game?
Arena new home of NCAA in 2012
By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
3:19 am | Friday, June 24th, 2011

http://sports.inquirer.net/files/2011/06/smbaycityarena2ricotechnogra-300x125.jpg

The state-of-the-art Mall of Asia Arena at the SM MOA Complex in Pasay City is hoping to host a preseason game of the National Basketball Association when it opens its doors next year.
Edgar Tejerero, senior vice president of West Avenue Theaters Corp., said SM, owned by business magnate Henry Sy, has grand plans on the first year of the MOA Arena and one of them is bringing in an NBA preseason game here.
“We’re changing the game, we’re offering something that’s never been done before in the Philippines,” Tejerero said at a press conference announcing the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) partnership with the MOA Arena for the league’s 88th season.
“We’re hoping to have an NBA game in the Philippines,” Tejerero added.
A number of major events are already in the pipeline at the MOA Arena, although the major announcement will come on Oct. 11.
The NCAA will consider the modern event center as its new home for its 88th Season in 2012, while the UAAP is also expected to hold its games there considering that National U, where Sy’s family is a majority owner, will be hosting next year.
Tejerero said they are also holding talks with the Philippine Basketball Association, which regularly holds its games at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.
The MOA Arena has a full house capacity of 20,000 with a guaranteed seating of 16,000.
Tejerero said they actually tapped a stellar roster of architects for the Arena, including the group that plotted the Philips Arena in Atlanta, the homecourt of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks.
Meanwhile, the NCAA and the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan has also linked up with SM Tickets, a partnership which officials said will give easier access for fans wanting to buy tickets for games.
“This will only make the NCAA an even bigger league,” said Mike del Mundo of Perpetual Help, which is hosting the NCAA this year.
Tejerero said, in return, the NCAA and the Arena in San Juan will have full marketing support from the SM Group.

^^ after this, my wish is a 40k capacity football stadium ready by 2014 :)

The city needs a 60,000+ stadium with athletics track, for a potential future Asian Games and Olympics.

I'm slightly surprised that no such large capacity stadium was built during the Marcos regime. You'd expect something like a dilapidated 80,000 seater built in some purpose built sports park, supposedly for the hosting of say an Asian Games once more during the 60's or 70's. All it would need now is replacement of seats, refurbishment of concourses, perhaps a roof and video screens.

But that unfortunately never occurred.

Ya, your right. Although under his regime we did get iconic structures such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the historic sporting event now known as "The Thrilla in Manila", he never planned on building a giant stadium. Maybe the funds went instead to support his wife's shoe addiction. :D

The city needs a 60,000+ stadium with athletics track, for a potential future Asian Games and Olympics.

It occured, but not in the grand design that we all hoped for. It's called University of Life Theater and Recreational Arena or ULTRA in Pasig, now called Philsport Arena. I believe the ULTRA complex houses a football / track stadium, housing for athletes, admin offices, the indoor arena, swimming pools and training rooms.

^ right in front of SMX Convention Center... or to the left side of the mall itself facing Manila Bay.

True. Sadly, all arenas commissioned for the NBA have generic designs. They only look good on the inside.

I beg to disagree, the older ones maybe like MSG and IZOD Center, but the newer ones reek of modernism and pretty aesthetics. Some even follow a retro theme, like the Indiana's Conseco FieldHouse, it mimics the old vintage brick / barnyard type of highschool gym complete with a homey feel.

filcan
July 13th, 2011, 11:50 PM
^^The only "old" arena worth mentioning is MSG. Izod Center? I consider even Calgary's Saddledome better than Izod Center. But there are some modern exceptions such as Philips Arena in Atlanta and Staples Center in LA (the best interior for an arena IMO). And you're right about the retro theme. Americans prefer their ballparks to be more open than the stadium style ballparks built in the '80's-'90's.

Clearly, they serve different purposes. You can hardly hold an Icescapades-type show in the searing heat of Manila, can you? Another obvious reason is basketball events ala PBA/UAAP/NCAA cannot be held in the outdoor venue.

Hindi ko lang gusto yung exterior ng arena na iyan, ineexpect ko parang design ng Phillips Arena.

Philips Arena was designed by Populous (formerly HOK Sports). Arquitectonica only did the expansion project. From a purely architecture standpoint my favorite is BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma designed by César Pelli (same person responsible for Petronas Towers).

Another favorite stadium design.

Hanwha E&C to build world’s largest domed arena near Manila

Korean builder strives to become one of the world’s 100 largest construction firms

Hanwha Engineering and Construction Corp. began work on the world’s largest domed arena in the Philippines on Thursday.

The work for the $175 million contract, signed on Aug. 4, got underway in a ceremony attended by Hanwha E&C officials including vice chairman Kim Hyun-chung and those from the Filipino Christian organization Iglesia Ni Cristo that issued the contract.

http://res.heraldm.com/content/image/2011/08/18/20110818000621_0.jpg
Hanwha E&C vice chairman Kim Hyun-chung (right) and chief of Iglesia Ni Cristo Eduardo Manalo shake hands after the groundbreaking ceremony near Manila on Wednesday. (Hanwha E&C)

The facility located near Manila, named the Philippine Arena, will be fitted with 50,000 seats and its domed roof will be nearly 36,000 square meters, making it the world’s largest domed arena, the company said.

Hanwha E&C said that the work will be carried out over 30 months to be finished early 2014.

“By winning this contract for building the world’s largest dome arena, the company was able to prove its technological capabilities and the ability to carry out overseas projects,” Kim said in a statement. The company said that in the biddings for the contract, it competed with China’s Jiangsu International and the Philippines’ largest construction company EEI Corp. The project will be conducted in design-build process in which the contractor is responsible for all related processes from designing to building the facility, the company said.

“As the bridgehead for the Southeast Asian market, the project is expected to bring opportunities for more civil engineering and construction projects in the region.”

The project opens a new market for Hanwha E&C, which has focused mostly on the Middle Eastern markets, as it drives to become one of the world’s 100 largest construction companies.

Earlier this year Hanwha Engineering and Construction announced plans to become one of the world’s top 100 builders by 2015 with an annual sales figure of 5 trillion won ($4.65 billion), and win contracts worth 7 trillion won in that year.

The plans also revealed that the company will diversify its overseas portfolio to include civil engineering projects, and to expand into solar power and other renewable energy businesses.

Also as part of the plans, the company hopes to expand its overseas generated income by more than 20 percent each year with the aim of raising 40 percent of its annual revenues from overseas sources by 2015.

In the Middle East, Hanwha E&C has made significant headway this year, winning a series of contracts including an urban development project in Iraq.

The contract, issued by Iraq’s National Investment Commission, is valued at $7.25 billion, making it the largest overseas construction project to be won by a Korean construction firm.

Under the contract, Hanwha Engineering and Construction will build a planned town at a location 25 kilometers east of central Baghdad. The town will be built over an area of 1,830 hectares and contain 100,000 new homes, the company said.

I have a different take on it. I think its simplicity is what makes it distinctive. To me, what makes a structure iconic is how easily identifiable its contours are.

For example, people would identify the Sydney Opera House, the Empire State Building, Taipei 101, The Petronas Towers, Burj Khalifa, Burj Al-Arab even with a simple sketch. Same goes for the Mall of Asia Arena. It's shape resembles an Eye or, if you want, an American Football. I can draw it in less than 10 seconds, and yet, people would know that I drew the SM Arena.

OF course, I hope the cladding is amazing, and the interiors are well-designed and apportioned. But looking at the Arena from a purely exterior perspective, I'd say, SM did a good job choosing the design of this one.
