Tourism thrust to benefit E. Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY -- The Department of Tourism regional office said Eastern Visayas region will have a competitive edge with a new thrust focusing on the development of cultural and historical sites.

Karina Rosa S. Tiopes, Tourism regional director, said Eastern Visayas could hardly compete with other regions that offer white sand beaches, but would have the advantage in promoting historical sites.

"With the emphasis on cultural and historical tourism, the region can offer a different menu. We have a lot of structures with historical and heritage value," she said.

Many of the historical sites in Eastern Visayas have not been fully developed as tourist destinations, she added.

The region was the site of the first Christian mass in the country and in Asia -- Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte -- and of the arrival of US General Douglas MacArthur in Palo town in Leyte province during World War II.

Other cultural and historical sites are: Buga-Buga hills in Villaba, Leyte; Hill 120 in Dulag, Leyte; Hill 222 in Palo, Leyte; Balangiga, Eastern Samar, which is the site of massacre of American soldiers by Filipino Revolutionaries in 1901; Magellan’s first landing site, Homonhon Island; Sumoroy’s Marker in Palapag, Northern Samar; Philippine Japanese Peace Memorial in Ormoc City; Price Mansion in Tacloban City; Stone Garden of Peace in Palo, Leyte; the 400-year-old Palo Cathedral in Palo, Leyte; Santo Niño Shrine in Tacloban City; and Shrine of St. Francis Xavier in Hinunagan, Southern Leyte. -- Sarwell Q. MAYOR ALFRED ROMUALDEZ SAYS: Taclobanons are discontented, irritated of poor water services

Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla (2nd from right) leads in the cutting of ribbon during the blessing and inauguration of the water system in MacArthur, Leyte. Assisting him is then Mayor Leonardo Leria of MacArthur, Leyte. GINA GEREZ

TACLOBAN CITY- City Mayor Alfred Romualdez has posed a firm challenge to the management of the Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD) to divulge its long-term plan on water supply services improvement or else privatize the agency.

In an interview with Leyte Samar Daily Express, Romualdez said the people of Tacloban are already discontented and irritated about the poor and costly water services of LMWD.

“The management of LMWD now should better reveal their plans of improving the current status of water delivery service especially to the city of Tacloban. We cannot afford this expensive yet annoying water supply to our faucets,” Romualdez said.

He said Tacloban could be the new and next destination of local and foreign investors alike having been proclaimed as a highly urbanized city more than a year ago, but with this lingering water problem this dream might not just be realized easily.

The city mayor said that if LMWD can’t do it, they better turn it over to certain private entities that could perform the job well enough.

“They’re not showing us concrete plans and concrete answers to the current water supply problem that the Taclobanons are facing. So, I think it would be better to privatize the agency,” Romualdez said.

The second-termer Romualdez said he is even willing to “accept the responsibility” if nobody else aside from LMWD would show interest in improving the water services of this local water utility.

According to him, the booster pump that the LMWD has recently announced to be the key in improving the water supply going to Tacloban is not working and may not be functional anymore.

“The present water system they are using was established way back during the time of Gov. Benjamin “Kokoy” Romualdez still. And it’s so sad to note that up to this time no significant improvements have been made despite the evident increase in water volume demand and the number of water concessionaires within LMWD’s coverage area,” Romualdez said.

Romualdez said he already requested the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) to conduct “an honest-to-goodness” audit of the coverage of the services of LMWD.

“I am in the belief that about 80 percent of the total water being delivered by LMWD is for Tacloban City consumers, which accounts the biggest in Leyte. That’s why I hope that the LUWA would conduct the audit on volume basis and not on per meter unit basis,” Romualdez said.

He further asked the management of LMWD not to mix politics with the running of the water utility as this is adversely affecting their services and greatly depriving the people or consumers of their right to abundant supply of potable water.

Revenue generating program of the city gov’t increases P14.2M this year

TACLOBAN CITY – The city government of Tacloban recorded an increase of P14.2 million generated revenue this year compared to the first six months of the previous year.

According to the data given by the City Treasurer’s Office through City Treasurer Zosima A. Cordaño , this year’s revenue amounted to the P176.4 million compared to the P162.2 million raised in the same month of 2009.

Cordano in an interview stated that out of P176.4 million revenue gathered this year, around P124 million came from the business taxes and P30.1 million from the real property tax.

Meanwhile, “the 2009 records showed that P107.2 million came from the business taxes while P28.5 million came from the real property tax,” Cordaño said.

Cordaño further revealed that there were a 65,000 total declarations on the real property tax and 6,771 business operators.

Cordaño stressed that the increase of the revenue generating program of the city is a product of being tax conscious of Taclobanons.

On the other hand, the city treasurer clarified that there were some Taclobanons who cannot pay there taxes on time because they were facing economic problem and they sometimes forget to pay because of having hectic schedules.

Lastly, the City Treasurer’s Office would like to extend their thanks to the taxpayers for the given support on the revenue generating program that the City Government has

Alfred happy of Tacloban being one of competitive cities in RP

TACLOBAN CITY – Besting other cities in the country in terms of competitiveness translates the efforts of the city government and the people of Tacloban to improve and prods for more endeavors to improve economically.

This was the initial reaction of Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez upon learning that Tacloban City bested other cities in the country in a competitiveness listing drawn up by the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center (AIM-PC), a research and intellectual resource center in Manila.

“I’m both surprised and happy because this is really our goal to be competitive in terms of attracting investors. I think it’s paying off that we were included in the top 10 of the most competitive cities. It’s really a big recognition for Tacloban,” Mayor Romualdez said yesterday in an interview with Leyte Samar Daily Express.

Tacloban City, along with Ormoc City, rounded up in the top 10 list, with Cebu City topping the other 28 cities outside the National Capital Region (NCR) as the most competitive.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the private and business sectors, the non-government organizations and even the government officials who have helped one another in attaining such recognition,” Romualdez said.

“It’s a challenge to me and all the city residents because it has to be maintained or even surpassed. It’s just only a year ago that we attained the highly urbanized city (HUC) status and we already received such recognition,” Romualdez said, referring to the city’s rank in terms of local economy’s dynamism, responsiveness to business needs, infrastructure, quality of life, cost of doing business and human resources.

With this development, Romualdez said he is bent on putting up an investment center in the city to serve as reference for businessmen and investors in the city and in the region in terms of accurate data that they want to get related to their investments.

“Right now, we are just about to finish computerization of our business center and once it is done, I think of putting up an investment center. This center will aid our investors in planning what type and kind of investment they want to put up in the city or in any part of the region,” Romualdez said.

“Tacloban is the gateway to Eastern Visayas and I would like the different provinces in the region to take advantage of this and use Tacloban for exposure and eventually help develop their respective economies,” the mayor added.

“I’m hoping that the new President (Aquino) will continue to put up more projects here in Tacloban and in the region because whatever happens in other parts of the region it always points back to Tacloban being the reference area for Eastern Visayas,” he said.

The mayor meanwhile disclosed that in the next years of his term, he is keen on giving solution to the water problem in the city.

“We cannot lure investors to come if we are facing water problem…so that’s one of my priorities. I am also planning to declare the entire city as regional growth center,” he added.

He said that for businesses to thrive and for the city to fully develop, the growth center should be at the center where there are ready and available infrastructures, human resources and other services needed.

What I dont like to take spider cabs is that they'd tend to bargain your fare at a high cost. Imagine, from DZR airport to the downtown area (somewhere in T. Claudio St.) they will asked for Php 150 for a ride. That's bullshit! Unless, if it is an airconditioned-Avanza taxi units like the ML Taxis its better and worth-a-ride than those tiny-uncomfy spider cabs. Glad they'll improved their units, after all this will lead to a healthy competition among taxi operators in the City.

Tacloban History: Shattering the Barrier to Development

Before, Kankabatok was original name of Tacloban to indirectly refer to the property of its first dwellers, the Kabatok. They resided on the vicinities of what is now known as Sto. Niño Church. Eventually, other wanderers like the Gumoda, Haraging and Huraw settled in areas nearby.

By 16th century's end, Kankabatok was mostly under Palo's political administration, the other handler of it being Basey's (Samar) parish. In 1770, it was discovered by the Augustinians, taken over by Franciscans (1813) and renamed Tacloban. So, how did Kankabatok evolve into Tacloban? Tacloban derived its name from Taklubs which were carried aback by the former people. A taklub was a manual device made of bamboo which was used by fishermen to harvest crabs, fish and other crustaceans. These men would respond "(to) Tarakluban" when being asked where they would go. Tarakluban was the very place where the fishermen would use the Taklub. In time, they became more familiar with the name, and so Tarakluban took prominence, which then became Tacloban.

The question still remains unsolved as to whether Tacloban underwent the stage of being a municipality since age-old records have been destroyed during one typhoon's devastation. However, rumors say that it officially became a municipality in 1770. Two years before, Leyte and Samar parted into two provinces, each with a political-military constituent Tacloban's strategic location made it a vital trading spot between the two great islands. The city's seaport may be one of the reasons for its success in trade.

Leyte's assignation of capital was stubborn in a way that Tacloban was not the first, but the last city to be proclaimed as chartered city by virtue of R.A. No. 760 on June 20, 1952. Grounds for such proclamation include: a) ideal port situation and b) sufficient and highly-maintained equipment and facilities.

Colonel Murray's visit in 1901 earned him the title as Leyte's first military governor. His first official move was the opening of the Tacloban seaport to international trade and commerce. During the Pre-WWII era, Tacloban became the commercial, education, and sociocultural center of Leyte. Highly exported products were copra and abaca. The premier local institutions at that time were the following: Leyte Normal School, Leyte High School, Leyte Trade School, Holy Infant Academy and the Tacloban Catholic Institue

On the 25th of May 1932, Japanese forces occupied Tacloban for three years. They built up the city, developed it and improved its airfield. San Pedro's sufficient size (fit for big vessels) convinced the Japanese Imperial Naval Forces to set Tacloban as a port of call and entry. Many people at this time considered this period as the darkest, horrifying part of Tacloban history, and with the whole country under the Japanese invasion, a lot of incidences of human abuse were committed. To counter this, local guerilla groups were formed and operated in Leyte, the most recognized of which was Col. Ruperto Kangleon's group.

Leyte was the first to be liberated by the combined Filipino and American troops. General Douglas MacArthur’s assault troops landed in the Tacloban and Palo beaches (White Beach and Red Beach, respectively) and in the neighboring town of Dulag (Blue Beach) on October 20, 1944. These landings signaled the eventual victory of the Filipino and American forces and the fulfillment of MacArthur’s famous promise: "I Shall Return." Leyte was the first province to be freed by a combined army of Filipinos and Americans. On October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur's troops reached the shores of Tacloban, Palo and Dulag. These happenings meant successful triumph over Japanese control and started the "I Shall Return" fever.

On the 23rd of the same month, at a ceremony in Tacloban's Capitol Building, General MacArthur, accompanied by President Sergio Osmeña, declared Tacloban the temporary seat of the Commonwealth Government and subsequently, the Philippines' temporary capital as Manila inflicted so much damage from the Japanes-American War while the whole country is still being fought for in different regions. The provincial government of Leyte and the municipal government of Tacloban were then re-established.

Atty. Paulo Jaro was Tacloban's Liberation Mayor, and the first mayor of this capital upon inauguration of the Philippine Republic was Hon. Epifanio Aguirre. On January 8, 1960, General MacArthur began his very own "sentimental" adventure in Leyte.

The city's development continued through the 20th and 21st century, aided by local and international investments, and relatively good governance. However, surveys unveiled that a lot of families still had its human development status below the poverty line.

Last October 4, 2008, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo proclaimed Tacloban as a Highly-Urbanized City, ratified by more than half Taclobanons in a tight race to declaration on December 18, 2008.

Why Invest in Tacloban City

Tacloban City is an investor's choice. This is the place where one's money multiplies. Listed below are the top 10 reasons why one should invest in Tacloban City.

Reasons:
1. Abundance in Natural Resources
Eastern Visayas has sufficient mine deposits (chromite, nickel, clay, coal, limestone, gravel, pyrite and sand)

2. Effective Governance and Urban Planning
Full government support envelopes the city, causing high satisfaction rates and low circumstances of protests. The city government enacted the Revised Investment Incentives Code for Tacloban City, which includes the Provision of Fiscal Incentives for Investors (e.g. Tax Exemption packages)

3. Strategic Location and Accessibility
The city is built and positioned along the Maharlika Highway, the national road of the Philippines. Seaports, airports and bus terminals bring travelers safely from Tacloban to the different parts of the country.

4. Low Crime Incidence and High Police Monitoring
The upgrade of its police station into the Tacloban City Police Office has opened opportunities for higher residential coverage and patrol, leading to low incidences of crime in the city and relatively high media exposure. This provides security among residents and businessmen. Moreover, there is an intense campaign against illegal drugs.

Ave. monthly crime rate: 8.95%
Crime Solution Efficiency: 98.25%

5. Humble Filipino Hospitality
Filipino hospitality once again proves to the world that it is vital in attracting investments and improving tourism status. Taclobanons are gregarious and trustworthy.

6. Outrageous Establishment of the Banking Sector and Financial Institutions
The financial sector, with almost 30 banks and other financial institutions established, continuously thrives in the city despite rumors saying that the global recession has not yet come to an end, and might cause rebound effects on local economies.

7. Availability of Facilities and Equipments
The readiness of State of the Art telecommunications, the increment in the number of garbage trucks circulating the city, the abundant supply of water, and the constant generation of 700.9 MW of electricity by the Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant provide grounds for economic stability, investment attraction and industrial support.

Its proximity to the Eastern Visayas Regional Growth Center, 237 hectares of land duly recognized by PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority), makes it more suitable for various industries ranging from textiles to food and beverages.

8. Skilled Labor Force and Competitive Educational System
A lot of government-funded pubic schools and highly maintained private schools have produced a gigantic mass of skilled workforce.

9. Public Interference and Transparency
The people's active involvement in the doings of the city government leads to secured allocation of funds and transparency.

10. Wide and Assertive Consumer Market
The Gokongwei's move to put up Robinsons Tacloban is proof that consumers are willing to pay for what they want to have - goods and services. The company also plans on building a hotel beside the shopping complex. The mall's location is an advantage since it is surrounded by residential areas.

RLC bullish on malls; Megaworld hits targets

LISTED real-estate developer Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) is bullish on its malls and budget-hotel business, baring plans to open two more shopping centers and two budget hotels by 2011.

At the company’s shareholders’ meeting on Thursday, RLC president Frederick Go said the company is targeting to open two to three malls every year to add to its 29 existing malls.

RLC had already opened three malls for 2010 in Dumaguete City, Ilocos Norte and Cebu.

He said the new malls next year will rise in Palawan in Puerto Princesa, and in Pangasinan province.

The malls will also serve as potential locations for its Go hotel chain, the first of which will open on May 19 in Robinsons Pioneer Cybergate. Two more hotels under this brand are expected to open in Tacloban City and Palawan in 2011.

Go said on Thursday the company also wants “to be among the early companies to form a real-estate investment trust [REIT]” and list on the Philippine Stock Exchange.

He did not give additional details, except that the company is looking at listing its mall assets. Other large players that have signified interest to form REITs are SM Prime Holdings Inc. and Ayala Land Inc.

The company said revenues in its 2009 fiscal year, which ended September, dropped 4 percent to P10.73 billion. Net income rose 4 percent to P3.27 billion.

Megaworld hits targets

On the same day, the Andrew Tan-led Megaworld Corp. hit its profit targets for 2009. The company’s net income rose 7.2 percent to P4.06 billion.

“A strong fourth quarter capped an outstanding year. In 2009, Megaworld performed well despite the challenging economic environment. We are confident that this is a result of the strategic directions we undertook in prior years and our continued focus on our business model,” Kingson Sian, Megaworld executive director, said in a statement.

Its full-year consolidated revenues amounted to P17.8 billion, up 2.7 percent from P17.3 billion in 2008. Real-estate sales contributed P12.6 billion from P12.4 billion the year before.

Megaworld currently has six ongoing township projects within Metro Manila and several residential developments in the Makati Central Business District.

As of the end of the year, Megaworld maintained a net cash position, with cash and cash equivalents amounting to P20.9 billion, a 70-percent increase from P12.3 billion the year before, owing primarily to the P5-billion bond issuance in November 2009.

New mayors should learn from most competitive cities'

MANILA, Philippines--The cities of Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Dagupan have been named as the most competitive cities outside Metro Manila in the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project 2009 (PCCRP) of the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center. The study, which was launched Monday in Pasay City, used six criteria in ranking the 29 cities: dynamism of local economy, responsiveness of the LGUs to business, infrastructure, quality of life, and cost of doing business and human resource and training.

It is based on official government data, perception survey among businessmen, and interviews with local chief executives and local business group’s representative The PCCRP also classified the cities into three groups: metropolitan growth centers, growth centers and emergent cities.

Cebu City bested Davao in the metro growth center category, which refers to cities with an average of P3.05 billion total income and average population of 1.08 million. Cagayan de Oro, meanwhile, topped in the growth centers category, which included the cities of General Santos, Baguio, Lapu-Lapu, Zamboanga, Olongapo, Batangas, Iloilo, Bacolod, and Mandaue. These cities have an average income of P1.2 billion and population 421,165.

Dagupan City is the most competitive among the emergent cities. It bested the cities of Angeles, Butuan, Cotabato, Lucena, Naga, Legaspi, Pagadian, Puerto Princesa, Ormoc, Iligan, Tagum, and San Fernando in La Union, Surigao, Tuguegarao, Tacloban and Santiago.

Ma. Lourdes Sereno Diokno, executive director of the AIM Policy Center, said that they decided to group the cities into three brackets because it would be unfair to compare the metropolitan and highly-urbanized cities like Cebu and Davao to new and emerging young cities.

“Cebu City and Davao City outpaced the rest in many indicators,” added Ana Maria Tabunda, chief research fellow at Pulse Asia and consultant for the PCCRP 2009. Roger Carlson, acting mission director of the USAID, one of the sponsors of the PCCRP, said that the findings of the study can guide the local officials in introducing policy changes in their localities.

“Newly-elected mayors can base their reform efforts on information that comes from business operators themselves,” Carlson said. The PCCRP 2009 also recognized the cities that topped in each of the criteria used in the study. Below is a complete list of the winners:

AWARDS

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/1116/legazpicompetitiveness.png

Mayors of the winning cities said that the recognition they received should inspire their cities to do better and to sustain the reforms and policies they have started. “This will serve as an impetus to us,” said Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat, whose city received three awards. He added that he is hoping that the awards can help them attracting investors who are afraid to invest in Zamboanga City because if the perception that it is not safe.

San Fernando City Mayor Pablo Ortega, meanwhile, said that his city’s efforts to address pollution and to simplify the process in applying and reviewing business permits helped them win four awards. “We put up a one-stop shop for those who want to do business with us,” Ortega said. “The system is very transparent and because it is fast we are able to curb bribery. A LOW-COST carrier is aiming for a share of the Cebu market as it opens its maiden flight between Manila and Cebu today, with additional frequencies within the year.

“We only opened our Manila-Cebu route today because we cannot compete in the Cebuano market if we do not prepare first a number of frequencies between the two places,” said Snooker Jaranilla, sales head of Airphil Express.

Airphil Express, a sister-company of Philippine Airlines, will fly from Manila to Cebu at 9 p.m. and Cebu to Manila at 10:40 p.m. every day. An additional two flights will be opened on Oct. 1 and another one starting Oct. 28.

“The number of frequencies in Cebu depends on the new aircraft that will be arriving this year to cater to our customers,” said Maria Rodriguez Java, head of Airphil’s marketing arm.

New Airbus 320s are scheduled to arrive this year, one in September, two in October and another two in November. Airbus 320s will be used by the Cebu to Manila flight, with the end-of-business day schedules.

“The end-of-day flight schedule and choice of aircraft are crucial on these routes.

The larger cargo hold of the Airbus A320 allows Cebu-based business to load cargo to and from Manila at the end of every business day and straight to the market the next,” said Java.

Jojie Salaver, Airphil area manager of Southern Philippines said, “In Cebu, we have a different market, that is why we are using the red-eye flight or the end-of-business day flights.

Cargo is the main driver for our first flight.”

Airphil currently flies to 24 domestic destinations using their A320, the Bombardier Q300 and Bombardier Q400.

Bombardiers are used for flights to and from places like Caticlan, Cagayan de Oro, Calbayog, Catarman, Busuanga and Mindoro. Other destinations use A320 aircraft.

Flights between Cebu and Manila use the A320, which are also currently used by other low-cost carriers like Cebu Pacific and Zest Air.

“By assigning a fast, fuel-efficient, narrow-bodied jet like A320, Airphil is also able to better respond cost-wise to both passenger and cargo customers,” said Java.

One of the youngest fleets in the region, Airphil intends to respond to the market’s needs and focus on the good use of time and exceptional value for money, added Java.

Manila-Cebu flights cost as low as P850, including taxes while some domestic flights can go as low as P299.

“With the reintroduction of our brand last March, the company is committed to providing value for money to our customers,” said Salaver.

New domestic flights are being planned for General Santos, Tacloban and Dipolog while an international flight from Manila to Singapore will be opened within this year and Cebu to Singapore by next year.

“We will strengthen our international flights in the future.

This will include flights from Cebu to Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan,” added Salaver

Eastern Visayas expects PNoy to bare his plans to fulfill campaign promises

Tacloban City (July 23) -- In the much awaited first State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Aquino III, the people of Eastern Visayas expect him to bare his plans in order to fulfill his campaign promises.

Fr. Erwin Balagapo, Parochial Vicar, Sto. Niño Parish, Tacloban City said that the content of the President's State of the Nation Address must include his priority programs in fulfillment of his campaign promises.

The Filipino people voted for the President because of the platform of government he presented to them. It is but right that the people will expect him to give details on how to he will fulfill the promises.

"We expect to hear concrete steps to stamp out corruption at all levels of the bureaucracy and responsive economic programs. Also ways and strategies to address unemployment, transparency in the disbursement of public funds," said several non-government organization officials.

Ms. Francisca Custodio, Station Manager of DYVL Manila Broadcasting Company and president of the Kapisanan ng mga Broadcasters ng Pilipinas Region 8 Chapter, said, she expects to hear about the strategies and plans to solve the economic problems of the country, in the first SONA of President Noynoy.
On the other hand, Ms. Carolina Montilla, President of NUJP in Region 8, said that among the issues she would like to hear about in the first SONA of President Aquino are the resolution of the extra-judicial killings especially those involving the media practitioners; employment generation strategies; poverty alleviation and citizens welfare to include OFWs, senior citizens, women and children.

"There should be a firm stand to address killings of journalists, members of the judiciary and even ordinary crimes including the secured interconnectivity of government agencies to harness their full resources in enforcing the law without fear or favor," First District of Leyte Board Member Roque Tiu said.

President Aquino has earlier statements about his priorities on education, peace and security, peace, employment generation and good governance. Hence, the people of Eastern Visayas are hoping to hear about the plans of the President regarding these issues, Mr. Eugene Tan, Vice President, Leyte Chamber of Commerce & Industry, President - Leyte Pintados Foundation, said. it doesnt mean to create havoc between sides. we just have to give stats, to give transparent infomations within the region regarding those infras... so that the community may know on positive side.

Guys, both of you are correct. But, please try to avoid comparing one city to another and be concious whatever you want to post in here coz it may provoke to other forumers. Im happy that Ormoc to host one of the regions biggest mall, this will be an indication that giant mall investors like RLC and the Gaisanos that they're doing well here. May it be, other giant investors to follow. Again, Im glad with the success of RPT to dominate Tacloban's local economy. And, Im looking forward with the success of Gaisano to boost local economy for the City of Ormoc. Ganito na lang isipin natin, anu-ano kaya mga stalls or botique ang magbubukas sa Gaisano City Ormoc (hope I got the correct name ng mall) ang wala sa RPT para dayuhin natin at dun mag-shopping? Hmm, okey ba kayo dun?

I hope ung mga peeps natin na taga Ormoc makapagbigay naman ng idea kung anu-ano mga stalls or botique ang nakaline-up for occupancy. Sana may adidas, nike or maski toby's store heheheheh

Hage, unta guinpa-upay pa it nga ira signage kay bagan diri presentable.

Mahusay ko it new look hit City Hall, unta guinbutangan nala guihap nira hin atop-atop (roof top extension) ha wala nga too, pareho han kalingit ha may wala, para symmetrical pagkitaon hit City Hall.

I agree @mao, pakakabati ko pala kan Ms. Nierras nga guindayaw hi Mayor Romualdez. Anyhow, Im happy that the City of Tacloban has improved a lot in terms to trade and commerce and alleviate City's local economy, I hope by this time he would focus on water supply, healthcare and unemployment problems in and around the City.

^^water daw it next na target ni mayor pati an pag convert han entire city into an economic zone...

...i don't like the signage also...an 3rd floor han city hall ig extend pa talaga ito ngadto ha left...

Max’s eyeing bakery spin-off, expansion to Mindanao cities (http://www.bworldonline.com/main/content.php?id=14814)

HOMEGROWN chicken restaurant chain Max’s wants to put up corner bakeries in all its branches before a spin-off, an executive said.

The bakeries will eventually become standalone businesses bearing the Max’s brand. Max’s Restaurant also wants to expand operations in the south, preferably through franchising, the official said.

“Maybe we can expand the bakery without the Max’s Restaurant, a spin-off,” Max’s Restaurant President Robert F. Trota said in an interview.

“We are still working on because right now we have not put up bakeries in all Max’s stores,” Mr. Trota said.

So far only 50 out of 115 Max’s Restaurants nationwide have corner bakeries. Mr. Trota said the number would go up to 80 stores at the end of the year.

“It has been there for a long time but it is just now that we are really [expanding],” he added.

Products sold in Max’s corner bakeries include pan de sal bread, cakes and loafs, caramel bars, and pastries.

Mr. Trota said the restaurant chain would soon open restaurants in Mindanao.

“We are trying to get our Zamboanga store opened. We have been working on it for a year and a half. We are just finding the right location,” Mr. Trota said.

Other areas being studied are General Santos in South Cotabato, Tacloban in Leyte, and Dumaguete in Negros Oriental. There are 80 already Max’s Restaurants in Luzon.

This year, the fried chicken restaurant chain wants to open six to eight stores domestically and four overseas -- three in the United States and the first store in Toronto, Canada -- on top of the existing eight stores in the US. “The Filipino community [overseas] is helping us promote the brand,” Mr. Trota said.

For mall-based stores, franchisees need to spend P10 million to P12 million, including starting inventory, and P18 million for a standalone Max’s Restaurant. Of the 115 stores nationwide, 55 are franchised. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

I Love Max's!
Definitely, I love to see Max's in Tacloban. I'll just keep my fingers crossed. It's been a talk of the town since last year, during the opening of RPT, I hope it will pursue. Sino kaya ang makakakuha ng franchise at saan nila balal ilagay?

Robinsons spending P1B on renovations

GOKONGWEI-LED property developer Robinsons Land Corp. has allotted about P1 billion to redevelop five malls this year, an executive said on Tuesday.

Expansion projects, some of which have already begun, will be completed next year.

"The five [redevelopment] projects, which includes the expansion in Tacloban, [will cost] about P1 billion," Robinsons Land President Frederick D. Go told reporters at the sidelines of a real estate conference in Makati.

Mr. Go said the property developer would add more levels at Robinsons Tacloban and put up the budget Go Hotels. The five-level Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City is also up for redevelopment.

Earlier, Robinsons Land announced the redevelopment and expansion of Robinsons Place in Bacolod, Robinsons Place Manila, and the two-decade-old Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas Center.

The property developer has allotted P9 billion for capital spending this year, of which 40% will be for the construction of new malls.

Robinsons Land will start this year the construction of its first shopping mall in the Northern Luzon province of Pangasinan and the 30th Robinsons mall nationwide. It will also open a mall in Palawan next year, and Cebu and Quezon City in 2012. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

TV5 to expand in 50 areas

by Jeremiah F. de Guzman

Mediascape Inc., operator of television network TV5, has sought permit from the National Telecommunications Commission to broadcast in 50 areas nationwide to expand its coverage.

Mediascape, a unit of MediaQuest Holdings Inc., filed 50 separate applications to operate and maintain a very high frequency and ultra high frequency TV broadcasting system in the 50 areas, including the cities of Butuan, Ormoc and Tacloban, the provinces of Zambales, Bohol and Albay and Coron Island in Palawan.

MediaQuest is a unit of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.

Businessman Antonio Cojuangco acquired ABC Development Corp. in October 2003 and relaunched the network in August 2008 with a new lineup of shows under the brand TV5.
