GOKONGWEI-LED property developer Robinsons Land Corp. has allotted about P1 billion to redevelop five malls this year, an executive said on Tuesday.
Expansion projects, some of which have already begun, will be completed next year.
"The five [redevelopment] projects, which includes the expansion in Tacloban, [will cost] about P1 billion," Robinsons Land President Frederick D. Go told reporters at the sidelines of a real estate conference in Makati.
Mr. Go said the property developer would add more levels at Robinsons Tacloban and put up the budget Go Hotels. The five-level Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City is also up for redevelopment.
Earlier, Robinsons Land announced the redevelopment and expansion of Robinsons Place in Bacolod, Robinsons Place Manila, and the two-decade-old Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas Center.
The property developer has allotted P9 billion for capital spending this year, of which 40% will be for the construction of new malls.
Robinsons Land will start this year the construction of its first shopping mall in the Northern Luzon province of Pangasinan and the 30th Robinsons mall nationwide. It will also open a mall in Palawan next year, and Cebu and Quezon City in 2012. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

To think RPT has just opened last year, Im happy for the "expansion" that they given to us knowing it is not aincluded in their original plan. RLC allots P1 billion to redevelop 5 malls
Written by Dennis D. Estopace / Reporter
Tuesday, 27 July 2010 20:22
FREDERICK D. GO, president of Gokongwei family-led property developer Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC), said the company is spending P1 billion to redevelop five malls this year.
“It’s not renovation, where you just change the colors and paint. In this project, we tear down walls,” Go told reporters yesterday at the sidelines of a real estate conference in Makati.
He added that some of these projects have begun.
“They will take up most of the year and completed hopefully next year.”
In June, the company announced the redevelopment of its flagship Robinsons Galleria mall in Ortigas Center.
The company also announced early July it started the third phase of the redevelopment of Robinsons Place Manila.
Go said they expect the redevelopment project to enhance the appeal of RLC’s shopping malls.
Other malls to undergo facelifts are in Bacolod, Ortigas and Tacloban.
Go said they would add more levels at Robinsons Tacloban and put up the budget Go Hotels.
He noted that the five-level Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City is also on the redevelopment pipeline.
RLC said in its first quarter report to the Philippine Stock Exchange that its malls business contributed 50 percent or P2.8 billion to the company’s October 2009 to March 2010 gross revenues of P4.73 billion, posting a 38-percent growth.
“Significant rental increment was contributed by the newly opened malls in Dumaguete, Ilocos Norte, General Santos, Tacloban and Davao,” the company said.
“Metro Manila malls led by Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas also contributed to the growth while other provincial malls also posted decent growth in rental revenues.”
However, RLC’s net income for the first quarter dipped nearly 3 percent to P0.927 billion as against P0.954 billion in the same period last year. The company said this was due to increases in its hotel operations costs, general and administrative spending, and interest expense.
Go said the company is still keeping to its plans to build a mall in Puerto Princesa, Palawan next year, and two more in Cebu and Magnolia in Quezon City in 2012.

Malls to be renovated ahead of REIT foray
Posted on 09:06 PM, July 27, 2010
GOKONGWEI-LED property developer Robinsons Land Corp. has allotted about P1 billion to redevelop five shopping malls this year, the firm’s top executive said yesterday.
Expansion projects, some of which have already begun, will be completed next year.
“The five [redevelopment] projects, which includes the expansion in Tacloban, [will cost] about P1 billion,” Robinsons Land President Frederick D. Go told reporters at the sidelines of a real estate conference in Makati.
He said the property developer would add two levels to Robinsons Tacloban and put up the budget Go Hotels adjacent to it. The five-level Robinsons Metro East in Pasig is also up for redevelopment.
Earlier, Robinsons Land announced the redevelopment and expansion of the 14-year-old Robinsons Place in Bacolod, the 14-year-old Robinsons Place Manila, and the two-decade-old Robinsons Galleria at Ortigas Center in Pasig.
The listed firm has allotted P9 billion for capital spending this year, of which 40% will be for the construction of new malls.
Meanwhile, Robinsons Land has appointed Citigroup and Singapore-based DBS Bank as arrangers for its foray into real estate investment trusts or REITs, which will allow companies to use pooled capital of investors to buy and manage income-generating properties or mortgage loans.
“What we think is most interesting for the moment is the shopping center business that we have, because [malls] are the most consistent income generators of the company for two decades,” Mr. Go said.
“Most of the funds that we will generate [from REITs] will be deployed back to developing more properties for the company,” Mr. Go added.
Robinsons Land will start this year the construction of its first shopping mall in the Northern Luzon province of Pangasinan and the 30th Robinsons mall nationwide. It will also open a mall in Palawan next year, and Cebu and Quezon City in 2012.
Shares in Robinsons Land, whose profits dropped by 2.78% to P926.92 million in the first quarter, rose to P13.70 each yesterday from P13.66 on Monday. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales
ijun July 27th, 2010, 09:43 PM Two-additional level? How they will going to construct without affecting the existing tenants on the second level? Hmm....sounds interesting. It goes to show more tenants are really interested to occupy at RPT, anu-ano kaya ang mga ito?
I thought the proposed GoHotel will houses two-additional cinemas and other boutiques/stalls sa 1st-3rd or 4th level. Ilan floors / level kaya ang meron nitong budget hotel na'to? At pa'no, where, they will put the proposed BPO bldg. Hayz, nakakawindang talaga itong mga Gokongwei's love na love ang Tacloban. jejejejejej
As I read the news article, akala ko the amount na igagastos ng RLC for the expansion of RPT plus the GoHotel ay tumataginting na Php 1B, hindi pala toinks! jejejejeje

The said expansion project of the water district is being conducted through a feasibility study under the Local Water Utility Administration, the head agency of water district, and is expected to be done within this year.
Ma. Teresa Pascua, public relations officer, said in an interview that the expansion project is the main solution for water problem, since there will be additional treatment plant and laying of pipelines from the new treatment plant to different covered areas.
Pascua said that this is the reason why privatization is not considered by LMWD and besides there are projects and programs being conducted to lessen the water problem.
Moreover, Tacloban source of water is from Pastrana and Dagami.* Areas being supplied by Pastrana are Pastrana itself, Sta. Fe, Palo and Tacloban, while places being supplied by Dagami are Tabontabon, Tanauan, Palo and lastly Tacloban. Pascua said that Tacloban is the last area to receive water supply from Pastrana and Dagami that is why water consumption is really problematic.
Pascua added that the source of water is not the only reason why water problem occurred in Tacloban City, but also the conveyance pipelines since it is very limited and considering that it has been placed during 1990s.
Conveyance pipelines have a capacity of 12,000 connections but based on the records of LMWD, it has 29,000 connections at present.
Meanwhile, the LMWD, with the joint venture construction of Houston Hydrotech Products and Systems Inc. and E.C Caforteza Construction, has designed and built a fully-automated in-line booster pump facility at the Leyte Academic Center, Pawing, Palo Leyte.
Pascua said that the purpose of the in-line booster pump is to boost and increase pressure for water supply. However, Pascua said that based on initial operation, the said pump cannot exactly lessen water problem.
However, through the in-line booster pump, 538 leaks were identified and improved in Palo and Tacloban City from June 7 to July 2, 2010. And upon implementation of the project, several adjustments had been done like hydraulic testing and simulation.
Pascua added that the contractors were the ones who conducted the project and once design of pressure pump is obtained and project design is very satisfactory, that would be the time the project will be turned over to LMWD. And definitely it would take time, Pascua said.
The said in-line booster pump project costs P25,579,123.83. (Nancy Mae M. Almasco, LNU INTERN)

Max’s eyeing bakery spin-off, expansion to Mindanao cities (http://www.bworldonline.com/main/content.php?id=14814)
HOMEGROWN chicken restaurant chain Max’s wants to put up corner bakeries in all its branches before a spin-off, an executive said.
The bakeries will eventually become standalone businesses bearing the Max’s brand. Max’s Restaurant also wants to expand operations in the south, preferably through franchising, the official said.
“Maybe we can expand the bakery without the Max’s Restaurant, a spin-off,” Max’s Restaurant President Robert F. Trota said in an interview.
“We are still working on because right now we have not put up bakeries in all Max’s stores,” Mr. Trota said.
So far only 50 out of 115 Max’s Restaurants nationwide have corner bakeries. Mr. Trota said the number would go up to 80 stores at the end of the year.
“It has been there for a long time but it is just now that we are really [expanding],” he added.
Products sold in Max’s corner bakeries include pan de sal bread, cakes and loafs, caramel bars, and pastries.
Mr. Trota said the restaurant chain would soon open restaurants in Mindanao.
“We are trying to get our Zamboanga store opened. We have been working on it for a year and a half. We are just finding the right location,” Mr. Trota said.
Other areas being studied are General Santos in South Cotabato, Tacloban in Leyte, and Dumaguete in Negros Oriental. There are 80 already Max’s Restaurants in Luzon.
This year, the fried chicken restaurant chain wants to open six to eight stores domestically and four overseas -- three in the United States and the first store in Toronto, Canada -- on top of the existing eight stores in the US. “The Filipino community [overseas] is helping us promote the brand,” Mr. Trota said.
For mall-based stores, franchisees need to spend P10 million to P12 million, including starting inventory, and P18 million for a standalone Max’s Restaurant. Of the 115 stores nationwide, 55 are franchised. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

marc_86 July 29th, 2010, 07:48 AM BIR recognizes Tacloban as one of the Top Taxpayer LGUs in the region
TACLOBAN CITY – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Regional Office 8, through their Regional Director Alert B. Alocilja recently awarded a Plaque of Recognition to the City Government of Tacloban as one of the Top Taxpayers under the National Government Agencies/ Local Government Units (NGAs/LGUs) category.
The recognition was held last July 27 at the BIR Revenue Region Number 14 Office at the Government Center in Palo, Leyte as part of the 106th founding anniversary celebration of the BIR RO8. It was found out that BIR RO8 has awarded three LGUs here, specifically the City of Tacloban, the City Of Ormoc and the Province of Eastern Samar.
According to Zosima A. Cordaño, City Treasurer of Tacloban, the BIR gave this award in order to recognize and thank those NGAs and LGUs in the entire region for the valuable support and contribution in attaining their revenue collection targets for Tax Year 2009.
Cordaño clarified that the city government had qualified for the said award because the remittance of the withholding taxes paid by the business operators and employees of the city prior to the deadline that was set by the BIR.
“We were able to receive the said award of the BIR RO8 due of the efforts that we exert because we always see to it that all our tax collections, as one of the collecting agencies of the city government of Tacloban, are remitted to the BIR on or before the 10th day of the following month,” Cordaño said.
Furthermore, the said recognition given by the BIR is the first of the city government to receive it.
Because of the recognition received, the City Treasurer would like to extend thanks to the awarding body for acknowledgement given to them as well as to the taxpayers and City government employees for the support given.
“We would like to thank the awarding body that they have acknowledged our effort in attaining the target tax collection intended for the year,” she added.
Meanwhile, Cordaño pointed out that because of the effort that they have on attaining their target tax collection, they also help and serve as the contributory factor in attaining the revenue collection of the BIR RO8.

BIR recognizes Tacloban as one of the Top Taxpayer LGUs in the region
TACLOBAN CITY – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Regional Office 8, through their Regional Director Alert B.
Morales

PIA Press Release
2010/07/29
Eastern Visayas gives PNoy satisfactory rating
Tacloban City (July 29) -- The people of Eastern Visayas gave President Benigno Aquino III a satisfactory rating for his first State of the Nation Address on July 26, 2010.
About 99 percent of the respondents in the post SONA survey conducted by the Philippine Agency in Eastern Visayas, gave the President satisfactory rating.
Only one percent of the respondents answered either very satisfactory, needs improvement, or unsatisfactory rating.
The most common reason why the respondents like President Aquino?s SONA was because of his determination to stop corruption in government which was clearly underscored when he said:
"Sa Administrasyon po natin, walang kota-kota, walang tongpats; ang pera ng taumbayan ay gagastusin para sa taumbayan lamang."
Reverend Father Erwin Balagapo, Parochial Vicar of Santo Nino Parish, and Leyte Board Member Roque Tiu both believed that the President was very sincere when delivering his SONA and his sincerity gives a ray of hope to the Filipino people.
Ms. Francisca Custodio, the President of the KBP in the Region and the station manager of DYVL Aksyon Radyo of the Manila Broadcasting Company echoed the same insight saying "he sounded so sincere especially in the area of stumping out corruption."
Northern Samar Governor Paul Daza said "he was very candid about the real situation of the nation."
Most of the respondents who are government employees lamented that the President made no mention about the anomalies at GSIS which have affected many government retirees and employees.
Many of the Eastern Visayas respondents expressed their belief that the President should have given more time discussing where and how he wants to lead the country in six years rather that giving more time lambasting the past administration. If there were anomalies, then leave the job to the Department of Justice and the Truth Commission, respondents said.
This thought among the respondents is a sign that the Filipino people wants to start anew, move forward towards a better Philippines. The Filipinos are more vigilant and more observant, determined that under the leadership of President Aquino, they will give their full support so that the reasons why he was elected to the post will be achieved. Tacloban rethinks dev’t tack
TACLOBAN CITY -- In a bid to attract more investments, Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez said his government is reviewing the thrust of developing only a portion of the city.
"The growth center should not be placed only in a specific area of the city. I believe that a growth center needs an airport, seaport, good road networks, electricity and ample supply of water. There’s no business that would run without those things," Mr. Romualdez said.
He said the city government’s 250-hectare property that was declared as an economic zone 12 years ago had failed to attract investments. Not a single infrastructure nor factory has been put up in the Eastern Visayas Agri-Industrial Growth Center, he noted.
A portion of the property, which is located in the northern part of the city, is now even being used as a dump site.
"Improvement of infrastructure and creating an investor-friendly environment should be focused on the entire city, even if it is located far away from the city’s center," he said. -- RLA

DPWH implements Special Projects in Tacloban City
Tacloban City- The Department of Public Works and Highways, together with Congressman Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez with other organizations and Offices who raised the budget for the construction and maintenance of projects, implements its “special projects” in Tacloban City.
Projects of the DPWH could come from the General Appropriations Act (GAA) which is implemented yearly from the National Government. Another source of projects is known as Congressional Insertions which comes from the “Pork-barrel” of the Congressman. This is the implementation of projects by the DPWH which are not included in the GAA.
The GAA of 2010 includes three (3) regular Infrastructure projects- the rehabilitation of the Tacloban-Baybay South Road, Rehabilitation of Damaged pavements from Rizal avenue Extension, and the upgrading from gravel road to concrete road of Brgy. Tigbao, Sta. Fe.
The rehabilitation and maintenance projects in the Apitong Road, Leyte-Samar Road, Daang Maharlika Road, Nula-Tula drainage system construction, asphalting of Naga-naga, Anibong and Picas Sagkahan (DZR) are still ongoing. These are the special projects, projects that are obtained through outsourcing, which the DPWH implements this year

he's not man.. actually he's very straightforward about the condition of the patient, he doesn't give false hopes.. and FYI brain surgeries are on the top of the most difficult surgical operations. i think it is just unfair to tag him like that.. and "mahilig experimentuhan" is not a proper word to use. i think you should double-check your facts first because such statements could be very damaging to his reputation and I believe if its a hearsay, leave it as a hearsay and it does not warrant any intelligent discussion.

Doing cranial surgery is one of the most complicated thing to do.Even by the most skilled neurosurgeon there is in the planet, undergoing one is NOT a GUARANTEE that the patient would be back to his former normal physical ability. Besides, whoever said that medicine was perfect science?

Robinsons expands malls
Monday, 02 August 2010 00:00
The property arm of the Gokongwei group has earmarked about a billion pesos for the redevelopment of its five malls this year.
Frederick Go, Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) president, said the expansion projects, which began this year, would be completed next year. “We’ve undergone several phases of renovation and redevelopment and now we think it’s time to develop the exterior of the mall and some parts of the
interior after reviewing the tenant mix,” Go said on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT) Summit last week.
Go said the property firm would also add two floors of mall space to Robinsons Tacloban and establish the budget Go Hotel.
RLC earlier announced the redevelopment and expansion of Robinsons Place in Bacolod, Robinsons Place Manila, and Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas Center.
Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City will also undergo a facelift.
Go said RLC has appointed Citibank and DBS Bank as advisers for the property firm’s planned REIT fund raising activity.
He said the company is waiting for the law’s implementing rules and regulations from the Bureau of Internal Revenue before coming up with the mix of assets that would be included in its REIT.
RLC shares dipped from P13.38 on July 29 to P13.30 each on Friday.

Local equipment sought
TACLOBAN CITY -- The Department of Agriculture is pushing the accreditation of local farm equipment makers as part of efforts to push the use of modern farming technologies and minimize post-harvest losses. In an interview on the sidelines of a meeting sourcewith Philippine Center for Post Harvest Development and Mechanization, DA Regional Executive Director Leo P. Cañeda noted that, in the past three years, his office has distributed 215 flatbed mechanical dryers that were all sourced from accredited manufacturers in other regions. "I wish we got these machineries from our local makers... That has been the missing link of... farming activities in this region."

BFAR-8: Legwork for construction of Tacloban fish port already ongoing
TACLOBAN CITY- The legwork for the construction of the fish port project in this city, which aims to attract big investors from the lucrative tuna industry, is already in progress, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional office here.
BFAR Regional Director Juan Albaladejo disclosed to Leyte Samar Daily Express in an interview that around P50 million initial funds were already released by the national government to jumpstart the project construction which has been long-awaited especially by people involved in the fishing industry.
The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), which secures the money for this project, has already hired Manila-based consultants who are now doing the preparatory work for the project.
“The PFDA has already hired a consulting firm offering the services of geodetical technologists who are now doing the legwork for the soil analysis of the area,” Albaladejo said.
According to him, the hiring of experts that would do the soil survey is part of the package offered by the PFDA in the construction of the fish port project. The counterpart of the city government is only the lot area.
The soil analysis, according to Albaladejo, is imperative to determine where to put the needed infrastructure and where to strengthen them as well as to pinpoint areas where reclamation might be possible to expand the area coverage.
Express learned that the initial release in the amount of P50 million would be used for the land or site development and also in the putting up of a refrigeration and storage facilities.
The current area allotted by the city government for the fish project is only one hectare located at the wet market or old bus terminal in Brgy. 37.
Albaladejo, for his part, said that they have no choice but to make do with what is provided by the city government for the meantime.
“We can stick with that area for now, but if we want to attract big investors coming from General Santos especially, we need a bigger area that would accommodate the processing and post harvest areas and for the canning site as well,” Albaladejo said.
He said the city government should ideally provide something around five hectares to accommodate all the recommended facilities for this fish port project.
“The city government should plan ahead. They should be able to properly deal with the informal settlers at Brgy. 37 and what to do with them because we want Tacloban to be a tuna capital,” Albaladejo said.
He said the overall targeted investments for this particular project is around P200 million to P300 million.
“The money is already under the trust fund of the PFDA, hindi na magagalaw at safe na ‘yun, ang kailangan nalang ay hintayin natin kung kelan ang release ng ibang pondo maliban sa P50 million na ngayon ay available at gagamitin na,” Albaladejo said. (Lemuel Pagliawan)

No to STL, says Alfred
TACLOBAN CITY – Tacloban City Mayor, Alfred S. Romualdez is strongly opposed to having a Small Town Lottery (STL) operation in Tacloban.
This was disclosed by the mayor himself in a recent interview with Leyte Samar Daily Express, when asked if he favors that STL should operate in Tacloban.
According to Mayor Romualdez, allowing the STL to operate here is like teaching Taclobanons to gamble.
“If I would permit this to operate in the city, then the impact is that I am teaching the constituents of Tacloban to know how to gamble,” Romualdez said.
Instead of encouraging STL operators to operate in the city, Romualdez said that he should prioritize on encouraging more investors to put up businesses here so that he would be able to help his constituents by giving them extra jobs.
“It is not my priority to invite STL to operate here, what I am prioritizing is to put up more establishments and to encourage more investors to have their businesses in Tacloban,” he added.
He also stressed that putting infrastructures and other businesses in Tacloban like in the Port Area, Market Site and Downtown Area would really help the community. (REY GERILLA GRADO)

EV’s dev’t framework jibes with national dev’t agenda
TACLOBAN CITY—Eastern Visayas’ regional development framework for the next six years is exactly the same as the new administration’s development agenda, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).
Atty. Buenaventura C. Go-Soco, Jr., NEDA regional director, said the region’s development framework for 2011-2016 is to develop the region’s agri-business and eco-tourism industries.
“The mix of agri-business and eco-tourism development will be a dual approach which is hoped to decisively generate more employment and significantly reduce poverty in Eastern Visayas,” Atty. Go-Soco said during a media forum yesterday.
It could be recalled that in his State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III bared infrastructure development to help tourism grow, access to grains terminals, refrigeration facilities, road network and post harvest facilities, job creation which will come from growth of industries, and streaming of business and licensing procedures.
According to Go-Soco, in support to the development agenda of the President, the Regional Development Council (RDC) has adopted approaches and strategies for its attainment.
These include the commercialization of mature technologies, crop diversification, road network development and provision of other support facilities, utilization of unproductive lands, streamlining licensing requirements, providing accessible capital, improve product packaging, improve labor management relations and increasing public-private sector collaboration.
Other equally important strategies are providing support to micro-small-and-medium enterprises (MSMEs), development upgrading of tourism destinations, capacitating the human resources required in the industries, provide scholarships in agri-business and eco-tourism related courses, adopt curricular programs and vocational course offerings relevant to agri-business, eco-tourism and the needs of the market, and adopt a more aggressive networking and marketing.
Go-Soco said that the RDC’s sectoral committees will be conducting workshops to formulate the six-year regional development plan that will detail the development framework by way of specific strategies, programs and projects.
“Eastern Visayas will pursue a vision it is capable of attaining given its resources and location advantage and the demands and opportunities presented by the market,” the NEDA regional director said.
He admitted though that implementing the agenda will require concerted efforts of the government, the business sector and the local communities.
“We would like to stress governance as a major factor. The region’s political leaders should harmonize their own local government’s agenda to enable the region to realize these vision,” he said.

Private sector needed to address needs of tourism industry – Go-Soco
TACLOBAN CITY – The private sector must come in to address the needs of the tourism industry in the region, according to National Economic Development Authority Regional Director Buenaventura Go-Soco.
“If we can do better maybe we can achieve what Cebu and Bohol are experiencing as far as tourist arrival is concern and its effect to their economy, maybe we cannot duplicate it but I hope we can do more because our tourism site here are more beautiful and tourist have more choices of where to go,” Dir. Go-Soco said during a press forum held in Tacloban City.
“But this can only be achieved through the help of private sector and investors,” he added.
Through the help of the private sector, there will be greater chance to improve tourism facilities like constructing of facilities that would house visiting tourist in the region especially in the municipalities where the tourism sites are located.
Some sectors through the leadership of the Regional Tourism Council have been doing cluster planning for developing tourism site for the whole region and they have done with a draft together with the private sector on how to completely implement it in the ground level for the next several years.
Aside from the local private sector, investor from outside the region should also be invited to invest in the tourism sector of the region to have a wider tourist targets, as most of those investors from outside the region are large companies that caters to the needs tourism industry among these are hotel owners and resort’s developers.
Go-Soco added that once this big investors from other regions have established their tourism facilities in the region, local businessmen such as souvenir items makers should also improve their products to be more attractive and competitive.
With the help of local private sector, investors from other regions and small businessmen the aim to promote the region as one of the premier tourism destination site in the country can be easily achieve, thus it will not only help the local economy of the region but also helps the need to address unemployment in the region.
Go-Soco added that the current rehabilitation and improvement of premier airport in the region that was started during the presidency of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should pushed through under the present administration of President Benigno Aquino III.
“We need to improve our premier airport in the region to attract more tourists,” he said
“The RDC will ask the congressmen to ensure that funds for the rehabilitation and on-going construction of the improvement of airport will be properly allocated during the budget proper for the immediate completion of the airport improvement,” he added.
“We are hoping the Aquino administration will push through the improvement of the DZR airport because it is a great help in tourism, improvement for our region to attract more tourists, otherwise tourists might not return if they see the kind of airport that we have,” he added.
For the part of National Statistical Coordination Board, Regional Director Evangeline Paran, the current promo that airline companies are implementing is a big help to boost tourism program especially in promoting tourism sites to local tourist.
According to the data of NSCB, there was an increase of 63.1% on the airline passengers in the region and an increase of 8.3% of airline flights after some airports in the region had been operational like the airport in the cities Calbayog, Catarman and Ormoc.
Go-Soco added that in order to fully achieve the aim of the region’s tourism industry, existing problems must be addressed so that tourists will have the reason to come back.
Some of these identified problems that are commonly experienced by visiting tourists in the region are the high rates of fare among transport utilities; hotels are not at par as compared to other regions in the Visayas; roads to some destinations are not yet well developed that could entice the tourist to go back, and residents in some tourist site are not aware of how to accommodate tourists that are visiting their area.
In earlier reports, the Department of Tourism cited that one reason why it is hard to attract tourists to visit the region is the image of Eastern Visayas having the presence of the New People’s Army.
But the DOT personnel said that they will continue to promote the region’s tourism capability through joining tourism fairs in the country and abroad. (Roel Amazona)

ijun August 6th, 2010, 09:07 AM And that will be the task of RDC Chairperson to push through all of these agendas and promote Eastern Visayas as a whole as the next Tourism hub.
