"Panny's" to expand to Butuan next year

ORMOC CITY Leyte-based Panny's Homebake Products will expand to Butuan City next year, the first branch outside Eastern Visayas and the firms fifth outlet.

Nestor M. Sy, bakery owner, said that theyve seen a good prospect in Butuan considering the parallel economic conditions of the place to Tacloban City.

We already conducted a survey in the area and we have identified the location there, said Sy adding that establishing a new outlet will require them about P10 to P15 million.

Butuan has a population of around 300,000. It is the regional center of Caraga Region. Pannys is upbeat of expanding to Mindanao after seeing the success of our business in Leyte.

The first bakery in Tacloban is located in Corner Paterno and Gomez Streets. Last year, they opened their first dine-in outlet in Juan Luna St .

I intend to close the old branch when we opened the new bakery but our old costumers dont go to the new branch. We just maintained the old outlet and were able to draw new group of costumers in our second shop in Tacloban, said Sy in a media interview in the sidelines of tourism officers conference in this city.

Sy, who is also a city councilor in Maasin, added that they were able to grow the business despite economic challenges considering the innovations they have done in the past years and the continuing demand for baked products.

Theres no problem in food business because people have to eat, however, we have to sell quality products to stay competitive. Our products are oven fresh and our outlets are clean. We adopted good manufacturing procedures of big companies, which we are serving also, he explained.

The owner pointed out that those assets coupled with lower prices paved the way for their growth despite entry of national brands to Eastern Visayas .

We really want people to experience the taste of baked products that they cant afford to buy from national brands, Sy said. Pannys maintains a big volume of raw materials stock to avoid adjustment during price surge of main ingredients.

Pannys has now 30 baked products and its all available in Taclobans dine-in bakehop.

The bakery opened its first outlet in Maasin City in 1991. It expanded to Tacloban City after five years and branched out in Baybay City just this year.

The bakery's name was derived from Epifania, the name of Sy's wife.
It started as a hobby. My wife baked at home and our visitors liked it. That convinced us to open a bakeshop, he told reporters. (Sarwell Q. Meniano)

Though it will surely help to boost economic revenue of our City via portage collections and some other taxes.

If in case the Tacloban Fish Port complex will work-out, unta marevive it EVRGC as potential location for canning factories or some other factories to establish. Just my wishful thinking la.

Taclobanon shines at Beverly Hills

TACLOBAN CITY — Tacloban-born Arlene Montilla Dorffi Vargas captured the eye of Beverly Hills, California and the Filipino community at 2:30 p.m., California time today when the Beverly Hills City Mayor Jimmy Delshad awarded the Taclobanon as one of two outstanding city employees with a plaque for her great customer service attitude. Terry Wagner of Los Angeles was the second awardee.

This is the first award handed out by the city as it launched the “Friendly City Awards” to recognize and honor those individuals who have not only “provided great customer service, but have done so with a warm and friendly attitude.”

Mayor Delshad said the Friendly City Awards is part of the Smart City initiatives to show that “being friendlly can make an experience memorable and special—and make people want to return. What I have learned during my years as a businessman and in community service is, after a while, people forget what you said or did, but they never forget how you made them feel,” he stressed.

Arlene, as an employee “has always been there for us,” he said. For her part, Arlene said she truly loves working for the City of Beverly Hills, having been with the city for over ten years. She migrated to the United States after a short stint at Holy Infant Academy (now College) in Tacloban and St. Theresa’s College in Manila. Arlene was the first of four children born to Lolita Montilla and Robert Dorffi at Bethany Hospital in Tacloban in the 50’s.

New bus terminal manager to conduct meeting with all vehicle operators in EV

TACLOBAN CITY – The newly-assigned manager of Abucay New Bus Terminal, Norberto Obase, has scheduled a meeting with all vehicle operators in Region 8 this coming Sept. 10.

Obase said the meeting is set to gather all vehicle operators to remind them about the rules and regulations of the terminal as set by the City government.

He said that aside from the continuous implementation of the logbook rule wherein the terminals operators should get the names and the plate numbers of the drivers entering the terminals beyond 10 in the evening, he will also present a new changes in the parking rule of the vehicles inside the terminal.

The new manager is planning to make the parking system more organized this time. He will prepare three sets of parking systems including the present parking situation. He will let the operators choose what they prefer.

According to Obase, all these rules and changes to be made are for the safety and for the convenience of the people, especially the passengers who are the main customers of the terminal.

Manager Obase is hoping for the terminal to become more systematic and developed in terms of safety precautions, cleanliness and convenience. He concluded that the terminal should be like this because it will reflect the whole city of Tacloban as what Mayor Romualdez once said that the terminal is the show-window of Tacloban City.

Mayor Alfreds MASA receives positive response from Taclobanons

TACLOBAN CITY- The Mayor Alfred's Social Action Center (MASA) program of the City government is receiving positive acceptance from the constituents in the city on its first month of operation.

Evelyn Cordero, MASA OIC administrator, said that their office has already served 63 barangays in the city and has already rendered services to at least 25 barangays for their legal needs, nine for free civil registration, seven barangays were given free medicines; 17 were given PhilHealth cards, two for burial services and three for financial and information assistance. All in all, they were able to help 2,244 recipients.

"Indeed, more people are aware that we are already having office giving direct services to Taclobanons," says Cordero.

She also added that what they are doing is an innovation of delivery of services by linking with other offices like Congressman Ferdinand Martin Romualdez's office to seek for assistance.

MASA now has a resident lawyer in the person of Atty. Pacanan and a resident doctor, Dr. Gloria Fabrigas, to answer both for legal and medical problems.

Soon, their office will also have feedback mechanism for Taclobanons to bring their concerns to the City government and plans to conduct medical mission. (BUTCH LICOPIT MANOG, LNU INTERN)

"Tacloban is perhaps not kown as a culinary highlight, so I was suprised during a 10 day stay to find several nice restaurants. A colleague took me to Giuseppe's, which is considered the best place in town. It is well set up and professionally run. Staff were well trained and very courtious. Pasta, pizza and seafood all looked very good, and we were even advised that the red wine would be served chilled and whether that would be ok. The menu is nice and extensive, with all Italian favorites, and a few Filipino touches. Food was really good and the was a very pleasent atmosphere - if I lived in Tac I'd be there often. Like most restaurants in the Philippines this too was very inexpensive, with pasta or pizza dishes costing around 3-5 US$"

"This place is one of my favorites and whenever I am in Tacloban, I make it a point to always eat there at least once. It has a comfy ambiance and the pleasing staff adds to it. The food is great and surely, they will recommend their seafood platter, which is actually good for 3-4 people. However, don't bother to enter this place if you have only 500 pesos in your pocket because you'll be spending more than this amount but rest assured, it's worth every peso. I recommend this place for family or group dinners because their servings are quite large similar to Fridays. If you happen to visit Tacloban, make sure to drop by this place."

"Mayor Romualdez took us to a dinner treat there, the owner, was very welcoming only he insisted on us ordering their special platter of god knows how much it was, the meat platter was particularly good. i don't eat seafood but i guess its nice also. the crew were very polite and attentive. I'd like to eat again there someday when i go back to Tacloban."

"Nice place great food, it was great! The appetizer excellent both main courses great, drinks fine, setting was awesome......then as we were all wrapped up commenting on the great meal we enjoyed a mouse runs out in the middle of the place. We didn't go back just couldn't manage to be certain there's more than one mouse there and surely in the kitchen. Maybe they can fix this problem or move to a better less populated critter area. The menu chefs and service were great....but what a shame."

If their going to do that, well another first in Tacloban. But with or without it, ang mahalaga merong expansion ng mall at GoHotel na itatayo. Let us just cross our fingers na sana marealize iyon.

FYI, in provincial level SM City Bacolod has a 'mixed-use' bridgeway with retail space in it at dalawang bridgeway pa.

Robinsons to franchise 'Go Hotels'

GOKONGWEI-LED Robinsons Land Corp. is planning an aggressive expansion of its budget hotel brand Go Hotels for the next five years, officials said on Friday.

To facilitate the opening of 30 new branches, Go Hotels, which targets casual and business travelers, has opened its doors to franchising.

“Due to high demand for excellent accommodations, gohotels.ph is now welcoming offers from parties who are interested to franchise or sell their land," Liz D. Gregorio, general manager, said in a statement on Friday.

On Friday, the property developer formally launched Go Hotels' flagship branch, a 223-room hotel occupying the fifth and sixth floors of the 17-storey prime office condominium Robinsons Cyberplaza at Pioneer Center in Mandaluyong.

“We now have 30 malls, theoretically we know we have 30 locations where we could build in,” said Frederick D. Go, president and chief operating officer of Robinsons Land.

Shares in listed Robinsons Land, whose profits grew by 11% in the first half to P2.59 billion due to mall expansion, closed at P15.00 each on Friday from P14.42 on Thursday. -- Neil Jerome c. Morales

There are only 4 private TERTIARY HOSPITALS operating in Region 8 and three of which are located in Tacloban City (Divine Word Hospital, Bethany Hospital and RTR Hospital). Aside from those private hospitals, the region's biggest government hospital is also based in Tacloban, the EVRMC. 2 other private hospitals in the city is set to open in the next 2 years while the existing hospitals are continuously expanding and upgrading their services.

Robinsons Land to build 30 budget hotels in 5 years

MANILA, Philippines - Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC), the property development arm of the Gokongwei Group, is aiming to build at least 30 budget hotels across the country over the next five years to meet the growing demand for affordable accommodation, particularly by local tourists.
At the same time, RLC president Frederick Go announced that the hotel brand, Go Hotels, is now open for franchising, pointing out that they have already received inquiries from several interested parties. One businessman, whom Go refused to identify, is already looking at five sites for his planned foray into the value hotels business.
Go said since the soft opening of Go Hotels in its pilot site at the Robinsons Pioneer Cybergate complex in Mandaluyong City, the hotel has been registering an occupancy rate of more than 90 percent.
“We’re very confident about this development plan that we intend to take this throughout the country. There is huge demand for proper accomodation and we intend to open branches in every city of the country,” Go said.
The next Go Hotels will rise in Bacolod and Dumaguete (both in 2011). Programmed for opening in 2012 are hotels in Palawan, Iloilo, Cebu and Tacloban. New sites for 2013 are Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte, Zamboanga, Batanes and Gen. Santos.
Built on the lot of the old Robinsons Apartelle, Go Hotel Pioneer offers 225 no-frills rooms with flat-screen television and free Wi-Fi connection targeted for budget-conscious travelers. Patterned after sister company Cebu Pacific’s novel pricing scheme where early birds get the lowest rate, Go Hotels is offering accommodations for as low as P388 a night. Regular room rates start at P1,888 per night.
Go said they intend to build Go Hotels in areas where RLC has a shopping center. As of end-March this year, RLC had a mall network of 29 with a gross leasable area of 811,000 square meters.
Go Hotels is the fifth hotel property of RLC after the 285-room Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila, 263-room Holiday Inn Galleria Manila, 210-room Cebu Midtown Hotel and the 108-room Summit Ridge Hotel Tagaytay.
In the fiscal year ending September 2009, RLC’s hotel division registered revenues of P1.04 billion or about 10 percent of total revenues.
Holiday Inn Galleria Manila and Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila posted occupancy rates of 77 percent and 72 percent, respectively, despite the global economic slowdown that has cut holiday travel.

Robinsons expands malls

The property arm of the Gokongwei group has earmarked about a billion pesos for the redevelopment of its five malls this year.
Frederick Go, Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) president, said the expansion projects, which began this year, would be completed next year. “We’ve undergone several phases of renovation and redevelopment and now we think it’s time to develop the exterior of the mall and some parts of the
interior after reviewing the tenant mix,” Go said on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT) Summit last week.

Go said the property firm would also add two floors of mall space to Robinsons Tacloban and establish the budget Go Hotel.

RLC earlier announced the redevelopment and expansion of Robinsons Place in Bacolod, Robinsons Place Manila, and Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas Center.
Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City will also undergo a facelift.

Go said RLC has appointed Citibank and DBS Bank as advisers for the property firm’s planned REIT fund raising activity.

He said the company is waiting for the law’s implementing rules and regulations from the Bureau of Internal Revenue before coming up with the mix of assets that would be included in its REIT.

RLC shares dipped from P13.38 on July 29 to P13.30 each on Friday.

DPWH boosts drive to remove road obstructions

TACLOBAN CITY - The Tacloban City Sub-District Engineering Office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) here said Friday they are continuously intensifying their drive against violators of the Road-Right-Of-Way (RROW) along the various national highways of the city to make the national roads safe for travel.

District Engineer Arnaldo "Butch" R. Bonifacio said they are intensifying their drive against RROW violators to clear the national road of obstructions to make the travel along the national roads in the city safe.

Bonifacio said they are implementing the drive without fear or favor as their office is doing their job within the bounds of the law.

He said RROW Special Task Force chief Johnny Soliva has already sent notices to RROW violators and informed barangay officials about the violations in their respective jurisdiction.

Bonifacio expressed his thanks to the local media and the general public for their support and cooperation in the drive to make the national roads safe and comfortable for travel.

Some prominent businessmen, professionals and government officials here have been charged with violation of the Philippine Highway Act for their encroachment on national roads. Some of the accused have voluntarily demolished their illegal structures while the rest have been issued arrest warrants after criminal charges were filed against them before the Tacloban City Prosecutor's Office.

Close to 300 individuals have been charged by their office for the violation of the RROW program, Soliva said.

The DPWH Tacloban City Sub-District Engineering Office is appealing to the public to report to them violators of the RROW or individuals who are using the national highways or roads for their personal use or illegally encroaching on the national highways so that they can immediately remove the obstructions, Bonifacio said.

GOKONGWEI-LED Robinsons Land Corp. is planning an aggressive expansion of its budget hotel brand Go Hotels for the next five years, officials said on Friday.To facilitate the opening of 30 new branches, Go Hotels, which targets casual and business travelers, has opened its doors to franchising.

"Due to high demand for excellent accommodations, gohotels.ph is now welcoming offers from parties who are interested to franchise or sell their land," Liz D. Gregorio, general manager, said in a statement on Friday.

On Friday, the property developer formally launched Go Hotels flagship branch, a 223-room hotel occupying the fifth and sixth floors of the 17-storey prime office condominium Robinsons Cyberplaza at Pioneer Center in Mandaluyong.

"We now have 30 malls, theoretically we know we have 30 locations where we could build in," said Frederick D. Go, president and chief operating officer of Robinsons Land.

Mr. Go said new malls in the pipeline include Robinsons Bacolod in 2011; Palawan, Iloilo, Tacloban and Cebu in 2012; and Pangasinan, Zamboanga and General Santos in 2013.

Robinsons Land owns and operates the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn in Ortigas Center and Summit Ridge in Tagaytay. The firm is also into the development of residential and office buildings.

Mr. Go said franchisers would account for half of the "conservative" expansion estimate. "[Franchisers] build and operate. We provide the system, brand, management and online booking system," Mr. Go added.

Go Hotels in Mandaluyong started commercial operations in May. The occupancy rate has so far averaged 90%, Ms. Gregorio said.

Shares in listed Robinsons Land, whose profits grew by 11% in the first half to P2.59 billion due to mall expansion, closed at P15.00 each on Friday from P14.42 on Thursday. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales
