RP skimboarding capital pays tribute to local riders who dominated two skimboarding fetes in Hongkong and Zambales

Tacloban City (September 5) -- Tanauan, Leyte, the skimboarding capital of the Philippines, is set to pay tribute to its skim riders who dominated two skimboarding competitions, the 1st Hongkong International ofSkimboarding Competition and the 7th Zambales National Skimboarding Competion.

Mayor Agapito Pagayanan Jr. of Tanauan informed that the LGU is set to tender a Thanksgiving Dinner on September 6, 2010 at the lobby of the new Tanauan Hall.

He said that the recent developments in the skimboarding water sports in Tanauan, Leyte not only strengthens Tanauan's stature as the skimboarding capital of the country. It also proves that his successor, former Tanauan Mayor now First District of Leyte Board Member Roque Tiu was right in promoting the water sports among the youth of the municipality.

Mayor Pagayanan said that one skimboarder from Tanauan bagged the championship trophy in an international skimboarding competition in Hongkong while another one brought home the championship trophy in a competition in Zambales.

Leo Espada, champion skimboarder of Tanauan, Leyte, outplayed riders from other countries to win the championship trophy in the Palm Beach 1st International Skimboarding Competition held on August 29, 2010 at Palm Beach, Cheung Sha, Lantau Island in Hongkong.

Leo, who was also the champion of the 1st Penang, Malaysia International Skimboarding Competition, was sponsored by Aloha Skimboards which is a perennial sponsor in the Tanauan National and International Competitions. Leo's local travel was sponsored by the local government of Tanauan.

The first runner up trophy went to Richard Paril, a Filipino who is now based in Hongkong and who has joined the Tanauan, Leyte International Skimboarding Competition.

While Leo Espada was competing in Hongkong, another Tanauan skimboarder was competing in the 7th Zambales Attack skimboarding competition and also won for Tanauan, Leyte the championship trophy.

Brando "Si-aw" Espada, also a champion skimboarder of Tanauan, was declared the champion of the 7th Zambales Attack held on August 27-29 at Iba, Zambales. Dariel Espada of Tanauan, Leyte won the first runner up trophy while Rioben Vivero, also of Tanauan won as third runner up.

The four skim riders were former champions in the Tanauan National Skimboarding events.

It is but proper to pay tribute to these young skimboarders, Mayor Pagayanan said. Afterall, it is not every day that Tanauan or the Philippines for that matter, is able to produce champions in the local and international arena, the good mayor added. (PIA 8)

MANILA, Philippines—Sixteen of 64 illegally recruited workers rescued from a sardine-making factory have returned to their home province in Leyte, earning for the labor department a citation from the Tacloban City Council, it was learned.

In a news release, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said the Regional Office of the Department of Labor and Employment in the Zamboanga Peninsula was cited for its special action to a complaint that resulted in the rescue.

“The Tacloban City Council passed and unanimously approved a resolution during its 6th regular session on August 11, City Council Resolution 2010-11-57 ‘expressing its deepest gesture of gratitude’ to the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office 9, under regional director Ponciano Ligutom, for its dispatch in securing illegally recruited workers, 16 of whom were from Tacloban City,” the labor chief said.

Baldoz said the resolution cited the DoLE regional office for its speedy rescue of the workers together with a composite team from the regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Justice (DoJ), and the Visayan Forum.

It can be recalled that the illegally recruited workers were found in a factory owned by Aquatic Food Corporation in Zamboanga City. The rescue was initiated after DoLE Regional Office 8 regional director Forter Puguon tipped off Ligutom about the inhumane condition, ill treatment, and underpayment of wages of these workers. Puguon sought the latter’s assistance considering that the illegally recruited workers were under their jurisdiction.

The rescue was a result of the inspection blitz by the DoLE regional offices of establishments under the Labor Enforcement and Action Program, or Project LEAP, the DoLE’s reform strategy to intensify labor inspection nationwide toward increased compliance with core labor standards.

The labor and employment chief had earlier said the DoLE is determined to pursue all out cooperation with its tripartite partners not only to root out and eliminate illegal recruitment, human trafficking, and child labor not only in the Zamboanga Peninsula, but nationwide.

Sports academy trains athletes to improve regions place in tilts

TACLOBAN CITY - To develop and produce top caliber athletes to improve the provinces and subsequently the regions standing in national sports competition is the spirit behind the creation of the Leyte Sports Academy.

The Leyte Sports Academy formally opened Saturday with 37 enrolled athlete-scholars from various parts of Leyte who will undergo a comprehensive sports and education program, seen to boost the province ranking in local and national sports competition.

Leyte Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla said there is a need to implement a good recruitment program that would provide championship caliber training for athletes with potentials. He said, "this would be very expensive but if its the only way to do it, then we have to pursue this option."

With an improved pool of athletes, the governor added, the province and the region can improve its medal standing in national sports competition such as the Palarong Pambansa.

Petilla disclosed all of the athletes in the academy, most of them still in high school, are at the same time completing their school studies in a school in Palo, Leyte.

The sports academy is prioritizing recruits who are out-of-school youths and cannot afford to get themselves to schools. As a requirement the potential sports scholar must be between eight to 14 years old and stands 56 in height.

Athletes-scholars now are 17 girls and 20 boys, aging 17 years old and below. Part of the benefits given are free board and lodging at the sports academy located inside the Leyte Sports Development Center, Tacloban City where a building has been converted into a dormitory for the athlete-scholars, which also houses a function hall, a recreation area and soon a computer room.

Sports academy consultant Dr. Lucrecio Calo said all 37 recruited athlete-scholars are attending sports trainings under professional trainers and coaches in the fields of swimming, boxing and athletics. At the moment the academy can actually accommodate up to 100 recruits, he added.

New Leytes Sto. Niño parish priest installed

TACLOBAN CITY - Archbishop Jose S. Palma of the Archdiocese of Palo has named Msgr. Alex Opiniano as its new parish priest and Fr. Isagani Petilos as the new parish priest of the Sto.Niño Parish here.

Rev. Fr. Amadeo Alvero, Palo Archdiocesan media director, said Msgr. Opiniano and Fr. Petilos will be installed today during the 5 p.m. concelebrated mass at the Sto. Niño Church to be officiated by Rev. Msgr. Bernardo Pantin, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Palo, to represent Archbishop Palma.

Fr. Alvero said 15 priests from the Vicariate of Tacloban will be concelebrating and witnessing the installation rites which will be attended by hundreds of parishioners and leaders of the different religious organizations of the parish.

Palma named Opiniano as the new parish priest five months after Msgr. Benjamin M. Bacierra, its parish priest, died last April 5, 2010 due to illness. He was 62.

Opiniano was the parish priest of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in nearby Tanauan town before his assignment to his new parish. He had been the parish priest of the Sacred Heart Parish in Tacloban City before his assignment to Tanauan, while Fr. Petilos is the Archdiocesan social action director. He was replaced by Rev. Fr. Abraham Palana as new Tanauan parish priest.

The Sto.Niño Parish,the biggest parish in the eastern side of Leyte, recently marked its 121st city fiesta in honor of Sto. Niño, the patron saint of the province of Leyte.

Gosh, im already annoyed with weird people here,... :bleep: My friend always annoys me telling me everything against whats happening to Tacloban now, he really does'nt like Tacloban to prosper coz according to him "diri daw naangay kay nagtitika hambog lat mga tawo, karuyag niya nga dapat baga lan huron it Tacloban" :wallbash: he really dislikes any changes there and he keeps telling me and im explaining everything to him and it all falls to the same story... :? he always tells me that everything there is ugly and if there will be changes naman he does'nt like it just like example for the new future airport and the road even the mall... :omg: even the way he speak is already different, he doesnt even know some basic Waray words already even how basic, like what the hell :wtf: 3 ka pa ngan la ka anyos didi... but anyway it just end up me laughing :lol: :hahano: anyway i just hope we help each other instead not like embarrassing our reputation to other people who are interested to know about our Lovely place... :nono: :bash:

Cheer up, don't mind other peoples comment. Its not that easy to please everyone specially that our City is under going metamorphosis. You can't expect a catterpillar to become a beautiful butterfly in an instant, catterpillar needs time for transformation. And that's how Tacloban is certainly undertaking. Anyone is entitled to speak out loud that his privelege in a democratic country. As Taclobanon, I know what our City had been into even way way back before and how our City transforms to become what we are now coz I was born and raise here. Though my physical presence is not there but I always leave my heart and my mind in Tacloban, that's how I love our City. My only question is, why he doesn't leave Tacloban if he ain't like it here? Dare him or ignore him. He's just a stinky fish who doesn't know his humble beginnings. Just like in the famous tv ads says "Great things starts in small beginnings." Be proud of your roots my friend.

‘Task Force Spaghetti’ now operates in Tacloban

TACLOBAN CITY – “Task Force Spaghetti” of the City Government here started fixing overhead electrical lines along Zamora Street AT THE downtown area last Saturday and this will continue on the next Saturdays.

Engr. Dionisio De Paz, officer-in-charge of the City Engineer’s Office, said that “Task Force Spaghetti” involves the Leyte Electric Cooperative (LEYECO II), all telecommunication companies (Bayantel, PLDT, Globe, and Smart) and cable TVs (Leytenet and FilProducts) in compliance with ordinance no. 2010-11-10.

Those who will fail to do their duty will be given corresponding penalty, De Paz added.

“Task Force Spaghetti” aims to put in order these scattered overhead electrical lines and remove those dangling wires not only in downtown areas but also other suburbs that are still within the territorial control of the city of Tacloban, De Paz further disclosed.

The support services of the said task force include TOMECO, City Engineer’s and City Architect’s Office, and the General Services Office.

According to Isabelo Lagutan, TOMECO spokesperson, they received communication from LEYECO II requesting for their assistance in controlling the traffic so as to guarantee the safety of everyone.

This step of the city government will surely add to the beauty of Tacloban and will impress the visitors, Lagutan commented.

On the other hand, De Paz stressed that his office together with the City Architect assist by monitoring the process and helping in removing some store signs which will cause complexity to the process.

Rudolph Mate, general services officer, stated that they are the ones providing them the equipment. One that he mentioned was the crew truck.

The team didn’t set deadline as to when this project will end. What is sure is that it will only stop if all these overhead electrical lines will no longer look like “spaghetti.”

Crime rate in Tacloban drops by 20%

TACLOBAN CITY – In connection with the celebration of the 16th Crime Prevention Week, the City Philippine National Police of Tacloban proudly informed Thursday that the crime rate in the City has dropped to 20 percent this year.

Police Senior Insp. Ma. Bella D. Rentuaya, chief of the Police Community Relation in the City, said that this high decrease of crime rate is due to their massive campaign against crime.

“We have now captured wanted persons because of the help given by the public and they are now getting aware of this matter,” Rentuaya informed Express.

It was also found out that crime against property is the existing primary crime in the City.

The city police is now visiting different government schools in Metro Tacloban because it was also discovered that the primary crime involving students is the R.A 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

The school visit will instill knowledge to the students on the crimes existing in the community and this is still in connection to the crime prevention week.

Now that I know he is from our place, I am much more infuriated. :bash: He belongs to this useless group of Taclobanons who spends most of their time bashing the place and putting down the people who only have good intentions for the city. Leyte bakery sets expansion

ORMOC -- Homegrown Panny’s Homebaked Products will expand to Butuan in Mindanao next year, the first branch outside Eastern Visayas and the fifth in the region.

Nestor M. Sy, bakery owner, said he would invest between P10 million to P15 million on the new outlet.

The firm marked a milestone last year with the opening of its first dine-in outlet in Tacloban.

The bakery opened its first outlet in Maasin, Southern Leyte in 1991. It expanded to Tacloban after five years and branched out to Baybay just this year. -- Sarwell Q. Meniano

IDOL sports academy hopes to produce caliber athletes

TACLOBAN CITY- The establishment of a sports academy in the province would help develop athletes who can compete at national level and make us all proud.

This was the statement made by Leyte Governor Jericho "Icot" Petilla during the opening of the IDOL Sports Academy on Saturday.

Petilla admitted that Leyte is not making a strong impact, if at all, at various sports competitions at the national level like the Palarong Pambansa of which the province hosted in 2009.

But with the creation of a sports academy, the sluggish performances of Leyte athletes could somehow improve, the governor said.

"This could be a starting point for us to produce caliber athletes," Petilla said on his speech during the inauguration of the said facility located within the compound of the Leyte Sports Development Center, formerly known as Grandstand.

Also present during the activity were Representative Florencio "Bem" Noel who donated a sizeable amount for the project; Vice Governor Mimiette Bagulaya and some board members and Palo Mayor Remedios "Matin" Petilla.

Former board member Rowil Batan, who is the executive director of the training center, said that at present, there are 39 sports scholars coming from various parts of Leyte.

Batan said that the young scholars would be trained on three sports disciplines, namely, boxing, athletics and swimming. The training center has the necessary facilities for these sports disciplines, he said. It would be a whole-year round training, he added.

The governor said that he feels bad that the provincial government has to spend millions of pesos in various sports-related activities and yet Leyte continues to be among the countrys whipping boys during sports competitions.

In this years Palarong Pambansa, out of the 17 competing regions, Eastern Visayas of which Leyte act as the premier province, languished at number 15, a decrease of one spot from the 2009 annual sporting event of which Leyte was the host.

The training center would be funded at around P2 million to be taken mainly from the Provincial Schools Board.

Jenery Libutano, 11 years old and one of the aspirants to become the next Manny Pacquiao of the country, said that he was happy to be accepted by the academy.

"Its been my dream to become a boxer and the academy would really help me achieve my dream," Libutano, who hail from Tanauan town, said.

Boxing coach Dionisio Habagat said that while the athletes would be given rigid trainings, they would continue with their studies.

It was learned that all the scholars are still in schools and have to maintain a passing grade for them to maintain their scholarships.

"Nice place great food, it was great! Base on the facts given by the Asian Institute of Management, a privately-owned management school in Metro Manila, who conducted surveys in different cities in the country today. As you can see, that competitiveness ranking contains 3 categorically ranked cities, namely emergent city, growth centers and Metropolitan growth center. Wherein, Cebu City got the top spot besting Davao City under that particular category. Virgin coconut oil producer building plant in Eastern Visayas to expand export business

TACLOBAN -- A virgin coconut oil (VCO) producer from Maguindanao wants to expand to Eastern Visayas, the second top coconut producer in the country, to meet rising demand for natural products in foreign markets.

One liter of virgin coconut oil requires 10 to 12 big coconuts, according to a producer from Maguindanao.

Reynaldo R. Pacheco, Jr., chief executive officer of Organix Solutions, Inc., said his firm had decided to build a processing plant in the region. A study is being conducted to determine the ideal site for the facility.

“I like this region because it’s been a top coconut producing area and the peace and order situation is good,” Mr. Pacheco told BusinessWorld in an interview at the sidelines of the third regional coconut summit held in this city last week.

Organix, maker of the Coco Licious VCO brand, operates a production plant in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao. The company, which was established in 2003, has been exporting VCO to the United States and other Asian countries.

“Our market is a combination of those countries and the local market.

We also have a strong demand here,” Mr. Pacheco said.

The company plans to expand its US presence and tap other global markets, but is constrained by the limited capacity of its production plant in Maguindanao, he added.

The Maguindanao facility is capable of producing only 1,000 to 1,500 liters of VCO in one day, or up to 18,000 liters a month. A purchase order from the US requires 17,000 liters on the average, Mr. Pacheco said.

“The United States is a big market and we want to strengthen our presence there but we are careful because they will demand for a bigger volume. If we are not capable of producing their order, we will lose our credibility,” he said.

Mr. Pacheco said he was optimistic the firm would find a regular supply of coconuts in Eastern Visayas, where there are 71.1 million coconut-bearing trees. One liter of VCO requires 10 to 12 big coconuts.

“With the right supply we can double or triple our growth,” he added.

Organix VCO is considered premium grade with its “fresh and pleasant” coconut aroma, and a shelf life of at least three years, he said. It is used as carrier oil for massage therapy oils, creams, and lotions.

Mr. Pacheco said growing awareness of the benefits of coco-based oil has allowed his company to grow rapidly.

“Coconut and natural tropical products have become integral to staple diets, supplements, and personal care solutions worldwide, contributing to wellness, health and beauty,” he added. -- Sarwell Q. Meniano

Historically, Coca-cola invested in the city (Tacloban) because of its some potentials even resources that would be easily furnished.

Aside Tacloban city, other cities in the Philippines were opened too...followed by Bacolod, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Tagbilaran, Cebu, Iloilo, Naga, and Manila.

In this city, Coca-cola rotonda nowadays is the second commercial district an intersections going in and out to Marasbaras, Fatima-Diversion, Real, and San jose after the Downtown area came first to development where Tacloban sea port is situated.

welcome @ijhun, i'm die hard for my city Tacloban. Im proud where i belong in contrast to others..they don't care. Siring paman han ak lolo. "it tawo nga nakita, ayaw pag paka buta; it na bati, ayaw pag paka bungol; most of all it na ginhawa, ayaw pag otok kay dilikado." hehehe

It means, the truth shalt prevail..we could hid small things into our packet but the big thing (tacloban) cannot be. We can close our eyes just a moment but in reality we'll see good things everlasting until we die.

That's Tacloban city, we can't hide it nor keep it into the box, just to say it got lost. My God, our city is being blessed away far from other cities in the country. In terms of climate..former Bejo said, " In this region particular Tacloban, have only two seasons its either Wet or very Wet" that humorous anyway..by the fact, its true indeed.

Dolina heads DVOREF bar operators

Tacloban City (7 September) -- The commencement of bar examinations was the glaring moment of every law graduate to test and apply the doctrines and principles of law acquired during the four years of thorough studies and nearly six months of review in order to achieve a noble profession only few are chosen to be part of the Philippine bar.

With this, the Dr. Vicente Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation (DVOREF) College of Law has an established bar operations committee to attend to the needs and wants of the barrister and to ensure that they were provided with bar materials to guide them in answering the right doctrine and principles to arrive at a more acceptable answer to the examiner.

Gregorio Dolina, Jr. a namesake and son of former Philippine National Police (PNP) General and now Board Member of LEYECO II, a senior law student and is fondly could "Greg" by his friends is the Chairman of the DVOREF College of Law Bar Operations Committee had lead in the first Sunday of 17 law students to comprise first batch of bar operators in Manila housed at Kanumayan Hotel owned by Leyte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Martin Gomez Romualdez strategically situated at Taft Ave. near DLSU where bar examinations is conducted to ensure that assistance to the barrister be immediately addressed at the proper time.

According to Dolina, Jr., the bar operations of the DVOREF is a centralized operations covering all subjects of law compiled into one so that the barrister will not crumpling materials to support their acquired knowledge during their stay as law students and those bar materials provided by the review center.

The affiliated organization of An Waray Party-List in Manila, the Aquila Legis of ADMU and the San Beda College of Law are the organization and schools who help provide bar materials to bar operators and in turn deliver to the barrister to ensure that they are provided with the latest tip in the bar examinations, Mr. Dolina said.

Mr. Dolina said that it is proven that with bar operations there is an increase in passing percentage of successful barrister because the bar tips is a combination of the minds of legal luminaries of different law organizations combined into one to help and guide barrister in answering questions.

Imagine the presence of your fellow law students while entering to take the exam in the entrance of DLSU show good luck until the end of examination shouting, and cheering while marching the thoroughfares cordoned by the security forces of the Supreme Court "will it not boost your confidence", said Mr. Dolina.

According to Mr. Dolina, DVOREF is a united law student's who in times of bar examinations they are ready to provide assistance in whatever nature to help the barrister to be successful in their chosen field.

Mr. Dolina further said, the bar operations will last until the 4th Sunday of September where every Sunday a group of law students will be send to Manila to help DVOREF barrister in their quest to be a member of the Philippine bar.

Mr. Dolina informed that 65 DVOREF barrister will hurdle the bar examinations, 63 are fresh graduates while two are re-takers.

The Rules of Court provides that a candidate may be deemed to have passed his examination successfully if he has obtained a general average of 75% in all subjects without falling below 50% in any subjects.

The following subjects are Political or International Law 15%, Labor and Social Legislation 10%, Civil Law 15%, Taxation Law 10%, Mercantile Law 15%, Criminal Law 10%, Remedial Law 20%, Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises 5%.

Mr. Dolina is extending his heartfelt thank to Atty. Carlos O. Arguelles and Atty. Eduardo Polistico who lectured Political or International Law and Labor Law and Social Legislation respectively, to Jed Petilos, President DVOREF Circulos Legis for his presence during the entire bar operations and specially to the An Waray Party-List for their financial and logistics support during the first Sunday of the bar operations. Ngayon ko lang alam na may-ari pala si Cong. Martin Romualdez ng isang hotel sa Manila. Also, he is the Chairman of Board of Directors of DVOREF.

Kun di ak nagsasayop, Dr. Vicente Orestes-Romualdez Educational Foundation (DVOREF) College of Law is the only law school here in Tacloban City. I don't know lang kung na-exist pa an Leyte Colleges College of Law.

Ngayon ko lang alam na may-ari pala si Cong. Martin Romualdez ng isang hotel sa Manila. Also, he is the Chairman of Board of Directors of DVOREF.

Glad to have barristers coming from our City. :cheer::cheer::cheer:

Just an info: DVOREF College of Law is under the administration of the RTRMF with Cong. Romualdez as Dean of the College of Law but most of his duties as dean is delegated to the Asst. Dean Atty. Tarcelo Sabarre. DVOREF College of Law already produced a bar topnotcher. :) Cong. Romualdez is the President of RTRMF-DVOREF while Madame Juliette Romualdez is the Chairman of the Board. :)

New sports academy to cost P2 M

TACLOBAN CITY - The newly started comprehensive sports and education program dubbed as Leyte Sports Academy is set to cost the province at least P1.5 to P2 million a year, according to Leyte Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla.

The governor said this amount is said to be a tight one that would cover maintenance, support operations, accommodation and training of the newly enrolled athlete scholars by the academy.

The Leyte Sports Academy formally opened Saturday with 37 athlete-scholars auditioned and screened from various parts of the province.

The initial available slots given for this sports scholarships was for 60, however, after rigid screening and implemented requirements, only 37 made it to the final list that comprises the first batch of the Sports Academy.

The governor, however, disclosed this number of scholars could grow within the year as he encouraged the trainors to audition more athletes and complete the roster to a maximum of 100 athlete-scholars.

Gov. Petilla said the budget for the entire program may seem a lot but added the program is designed as a holistic approach to develop and train student athletes both in sports and academics.

All the athletes recruited, 17 of them girls and 20 boys, aging 17 years old and below, are housed at the Sports Academy at the Leyte Sports Development Center , who are already attending sports trainings under professional trainers and coaches in the fields of swimming, boxing and athletics.

As the purpose of the program early on disclosed, all of these athletes are at the same time completing their school studies as they are enrolled in a school in Palo, Leyte . Most of these students are in high school.

Gov. Petilla likewise disclosed that to improve the provinces, and subsequently the regions, standing in national sports competition, there is a need to implement a good recruitment program that would provide championship caliber training for athletes with potentials.

"This would be very expensive but if its the only way to do it, then we have to pursue this option. We have to start somewhere before we can get anywhere in our sports program and we see this as a better way to start this," Gov. Petilla said.

With an improved pool of athletes, the governor added, the province and the region can improve it medal finish in national sports competition such as the Palarong Pambansa.

The provincial government of Leyte refurbished a part of the Leyte Sports Development Center, the buildings which were formerly occupied by the Leyte Colleges, and converted this into a dormitory complete with all other functional facilities, such as a function hall, a recreation area and soon a computer room for e-Skwela where they would be taught computer skills training.

Aside from formal trainings, the athlete-scholars are also provided with the necessary uniform and equipments depending on their chosen sports discipline. (AHLETTE C. REYES)

Mayor Alfred Brought GK-TAC Core Group to Exposure Trip in Taguig City

Tacloban City In his bid to make Tacloban City, the First GK Designer City in the Visayas, Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez accepted the Gawad Kalinga invitation to attend the Builders Night in Rockwell Makati and brought the GK Core Group to Taguig City today to visit the GK sites. The group is composed of businessmen Kenneth Uy, Wilfred Diu and Cathy Bonavitacola also a representative of the civic sector, GK-City In-charge, Jade Quitco; and PCUP Representative, Nap Cairo. They are joined by the rest of the members from the City government as follows: Councilor and First Lady Cristina G. Romualdez; Engr. Bobby Muñoz; EA Mariya Lagman; Building Official, Arch. Danny Fuentebella and Engr. Eman Casal.

GK Provincial officials, Lolong Virtudazo and Boboy Igot were part of the entourage.

In earlier statements, Mayor Romualdez declared that, "I am happy that GK has come to Tacloban and has included the city in its 888 Goal to house 5 million poorest of the poor by 2024 where Tacloban has been allotted about 15,000 houses." Gawad Kalinga is set to launch the program whereby its end-goal is to make the country informal-settlers-free by 2024. In a similar interaction, the First Lady and City Councilor, Hon. Cristina Romualdez, admitted that the presence of GK in Tacloban will "further make Tacloban beautiful and orderly with our poor constituents having hope to own decent homes", she said. The lady councilor was the event head of the GKs launching in the City of Tacloban last June 12, 2010.

The core group had a hectic schedule on September 1 which covered observation tours in established GK sites in Taguig City, the first Designer City in the country. They also visited Congressman Freddie Tinga in Congress where they had a good discussion about the Taguig GK Experience. Cong. Tinga was the Mayor of Taguig when the GK-Taguig Designer City was launched in 2008. In the evening, the group met with GK Builders in the Builders Night at Rockwell Makati where they met up with possible sponsors and champions of Gawad Kalinga to Tacloban. The builders night was attended by GK builders, patriots and sponsors to launch the GK One World which would connect all municipalities, cities and countries through the GK Way.

The trip would not have been complete without the encounter of the group with the Vice-President & HLURB Housing Czar Jejomar Binay; GKs founder & the greatest GK champ Tony Meloto, and National Executive Director Jose Luis Oquinena. These were all accommodated in a days itinerary as they return back to the city in the morning of Set 2 to plan out the Palanog GK site build. (Daydee A. Cairo)

TACLOBAN CITY - The An Waray Party-list is supporting the construction of a port in one of the municipalities in the first district of Leyte which the Department of Transportation and Communication had already allocated a total of P10 million as an initial amount for the start of port construction.

The said port is to be constructed in the municipality of Babatngon, Leyte, this was according to Congressman Florencio Gabriel Bem Noel in a press interview during the recently held 3rd Regional Coconut Summit held at Hotel Alejandro in this city.

"The construction of Babatngon port had now started, as what Mayor Charie Chan told me," Cong Noel revealed.

"We allocated fund for the said port because we know that it will be hard and it will cost a lot if we are going to develop or re-develop Tacloban port," Cong Noel explained.

"And we were told by the Philippine Ports Authority that the navigational equipment is badly needed that will support the ships that will use the said strait in their navigational trip," Congressman Noel added.

Tacloban Port, situated in the city of Tacloban where San Juanico Strait is to be found, said to be the narrowest strait in the world of about two kilometers wide.

The construction of port in Babatngon was supposed to start before the election but it didnt push through due to the recently held national and local election, according to Cong. Noel.

The said construction of port in Babatngon is seen as a good site for the development of Eastern Visayas Regional Growth Center, an investment and business site located in the northern part barangay of Tacloban City.

EVRGC is a 237-hectare special economic zone located 15 km of Tacloban City that offers incentives to potential developers and industry locators for non-pollutant light and medium industries.

Noel added that he had been lobbying the funding for the Babatngon port since his first term.

"It has been promised by the PPA Manager and we asked this project from the Department of Transportation and Communication which they dont have any choice but to release a budget," Cong Noel stress.

"They say that the water in Babatngon is deep so we are banking to fund the said project because this means cheaper expense since we will not dredge anymore," Cong. Noel added.

Noel hope that the said construction of Babatngon port would be finished within the year as there was already an allocated budget for it.

But he added that, they still need to talk with the implementing agency of the said project to discuss if how much budget would really need to be allocated as not to hamper the construction of Babatngon port.

"I hope that people would appreciate this project, just like what we experience in some projects of the An Waray where people had appreciated after the long run of its implementation," Noel stressed.(Roel Amazona)

QUESTION: Propose Tacloban Fish Port Complex is funded by BFAR-8 and the propose Babatngon Port is funded by DoTC, pasok nga ba sa nat'l budget for 2010 or 2011?
