Creation of new districts not an easy job – Apostol (http://leytesamardaily.net/2010/11/creation-of-new-districts-not-an-easy-job-apostol/)

TACLOBAN CITY – Leyte’s 2nd district Representative Sergio Apostol admitted Tuesday that the creation of another congressional district would not be an easy undertaking and would entail a challenging work.

“The creation into six districts will be tough; there are still some things to undertake,” he said.

The veteran solon, however, said this does not dissuade him of pursuing his plan to have a sixth congressional district and a separate district for Tacloban City.

“The population of the province is already big and there is a need for another district to have well-representations,” he emphasized.

He said he did not file the bill yet as he is in the process of discussing the plan with some of his colleagues to include Leyte 1st district Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and Governor Jericho Petilla.

In fact, he is planning to get the pulse of the majority of the people of Leyte through a public consultation early next year. “If they don’t like the plan, then I will not insist of pursuing it. But if it yields a positive result, then I will immediately file the bill,” Apostol said.

“It seems that I am supported already by Cong. Romualdez and Congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez (4th district of Leyte),” he added.

Manggaya ba? Well, dontcha worry my friend Butuan City will definitely have its own image and trademark. Much more for Tacloban City were slowly but surely we'll take even more further in terms of developments. As long as good governance reigns and business-friend local economy atmosphere prevails. I think it is driven tool for progressive City and that's our City officials would like to emphasize.
Taxis, malls, traffic lights and others within the locality doesn't mean that our City is progressive, its investors who bullishly invested millions of pesos to the City Treasurer's Office are the main thing why our City is progressive.

Have you been to RPT already? Sana magpost ka ng pix. Thanks for appreciating our City.

Leyte highlights best products at OTOP Visayas Island Fair

Tacloban City (November 20) - On display at the ongoing 5th OTOP Visayas Island Fair are the best OTOP products of the province of Leyte.

Department of Trade and Industry Leyte Director Ed Belas informed the Philippine Information Agency that among the Leyte OTOP products on display are Leyte antique furniture, processed food and handicrafts.

The province of Leyte OTOP producers joined the other entrepreneurs from the different corners of the Visayas Island in showcasing the local goods for sale at the Visayas leg of One Town One Product (OTOP) which runs at SM City Cebu from November 17 to 21, 2010.

Director Belas said that the marketing event is focused on the OTOP products of various municipalities in the Visayas highlighting the tourism and market potentials of Central Philippines which attracts more than half of foreign tourists in the country.

An intra-regional exhibit like the OTOP Visayas Island Fair is a good opportunity to showcase the best of the Visayan Islands, Director Belas said.

OTOP promotes entrepreneurship and create jobs in the countryside. It encourages the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to produce and market distinct products or services using indigenous raw materials and local skills of every municipality or city.

While the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is the project's marketing arm, OTOP is a "collaborative" effort of all sectors in the society, with local government units (LGUs) as the lead, Director Belas added.

Executives of the Local Government Units (LGUs) take the lead in identifying, developing, and promoting a specific product or service which has a competitive advantage.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through its Provincial Offices assist the LGUs in identifying the specific product and coordinated other forms of assistance from other government agencies such as the Departments of Agriculture (DA), Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Interior and Local Government (DILG), Science and Technology (DOST), Tourism (DOT) and the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA), among others. Government committed to weeding out barriers to doing business in PH

10 PPP projects for next year presented to investors

The government unveiled today the vital infrastructure projects to be opened for private investment, both local and foreign under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program.

During the culmination of the “Infrastructure Philippines 2010: Investing and Financing in Public-Private Partnership Projects” at the Mariott Hotel in Pasay City, Transportation and Communications Secretary Jose de Jesus presented the 10 transportation priority projects to be tendered next year under the PPP program.

“The projects presented today have completed feasibility studies, have completed right of way requirements, and have been budgeted to the required government counterpart for award and implementation by the fourth quarter of 2011”, De Jesus said.

He added that this year, they have been updating feasibility studies of such projects for actual implementation.

The 10 PPP infrastructure projects are as follows:

1. Cavite-Laguna Expressway project (Cavite side) — The US$262 million project will provide vital access between various economic zones in the Cavite Province and NAIA, the Ports of Manila and Batangas and will contribute to the economic development and decongestion of traffic along Aguinaldo Highway in Cavite. This will be implemented from May 2012 to Dec. 2015.

2. NAIA Expressway (Phase II) – It will link the Skyway and the Manila-Cavite Coastal Expressway and provide vital access to NAIA Terminals 1, 2, and 3 as well as the Cavite Economic Zone. The US$235.33 million project will be implemented from Nov. 2011 to Sept. 2015.

3. LRT Line 2 East Extension project. — This involves the expansion, operation and maintenance (O&M) of existing LRT Line 2. The expansion covers the construction of a four-kilometer eastern extension of LRT Line 2 from Santolan in Pasig City to Masinag Junction, Antipolo, Rizal with additional two passenger stations to be located at Sta. Lucia Mall and Masinag.

4. MRT/LRT Expansion Program: Privatization of LRT 1 Operation and Maintenance aims to integrate LRT Line 1 operation and maintenance to a private sector service provider during the interim period of three to four years. After the O&M period, the LRT 1 South Extension Project contractor is expected to assume overall responsibility for the integrated LRT Line 1 and MRT Line 3 systems. Project costs US$171.11 million with implementation schedule of 2011-2014.

5. MRT/LRT Expansion Program — Privatization of MRT 3 Operation and Maintenance will integrate MRT Line 3 O&M to a private sector service provider during the interim period of three to four years. After this O&M period, the LRT Line 1 South Extension Project contractor is expected to assume overall responsibility for the integrated LRT Line 1 and MRT Line 3 systems.

6. The MRT/LRT Expansion Program: LRT 1 South Extension project — This involves the extension of the existing 15-km LRT Line 1 system southward to Bacoor, Cavite with an additional 11.7 kilometers which includes eight passenger stations with provision for two additional future passenger stations, a satellite depot for light maintenance to be located at the southern end of the proposed line. Inter-modal facilities installed at high-demand stations, including the provision of additional rolling stocks to meet the current demand and additional load requirements once the MRT Line 3 and LRT Line 1 are integrated. The project costs US$1,555.55 million.

7. New Bohol Airport Development – It will involve the construction of a new airport of international standards with 2,500m by 45m runway to replace the existing Tagbilaran airport. Implementation will be from 2012 to 2014 with a total cost of US$ 168.89 million.

8. The Puerto Princesa Airport Development project – It will rehabilitate and improve the existing Puerto Princesa Airport to meet the standards of the International Aviation Organization (ICAO) through the construction of new landside facilities in the north western side of the existing runway such as passenger terminal building, control tower, administration and operation building, cargo terminal building, rescue and firefighting building and other support facilities. Also to be constructed are new apron and connecting taxiways, upgrading of existing 2.6-km runway and its strip and the provision of new navigational and traffic control equipment. Implementation is from year 2012 to 2014 with a project cost of US$ 168.89 million.

9. New Legaspi (Daraga) Airport Development — the US$1.11 million-project involves the preparation of the detailed engineering design and construction of the airport facilities. It also includes land acquisition of about 180 hectares. The project components are the following landside – Passenger Terminal, Cargo building, Control Tower, Administration building, Vehicle Parking area and other site developments. To be implemented from year 2012 to 2014.

10. The Privatization of Laguindingan Airport Operation and Maintenance project — involves privatization of its O&M in Misamis Oriental to reduce government expenditures and increase current and future service levels of the airport.

The O&M through concession covers the newly-constructed airport on a 393-hectare property complete with facilities of international standards. The airport can accommodate 1.2 million passengers per year based on it master plan. This project costs US$33.33 million with implementing schedule from year 2011 to 2013.

These projects de Jesus said. are only part of a long list of PPP projects to be opened for bidding and implementation in the years to come.

Other projects fall under the Medium-Term roll out and implementation, he said.

Bohol may look underdeveloped or underperforming for you in terms of infrastructure, industries, retail trade, etc., but it gives the National Government more than $5-Billion in terms of fiscal revenues which translates to more than 3 to 4 Million tourists annually. Those figures are too much to ignore or downplay.

The logic behind these PPP priority projects is that the Government needs to capitalize on it's own strengths to build up momentum for economic development. We don't have that much money to develop every nook and cranny of the country, that's the reason why we exploit our strategic advantages so that investments and revenues will come in to pave the way for a healthier national treasury so that things like the DZR Airport for example will be an easier undertaking in the future.

Alinghi, I think you know it's always proper to cite your source for the stats you presented. As far as official stats are concerned, Bohol is not even in the top 20 of the Philippines' richest provinces (total income, per capita income, tax revenue, etc.). And the richest (Palawan in 2008) has an income level that doesnt even come close to the U$5 billion (!!!) you say Bohol is contributing to the national treasury!

In short, iimplement muna itong mga PPP priority projects.

Now to this airport issue. Official data shows that the Tacloban airport is one of the busiest in the country. It is in the top ten in terms of volume of passengers and aircraft movement, besting even CDO and Puerto Princesa. It is clear that DZR airport urgently and desperately needs upgrading and being a very busy airport (notwithstanding its ability to make the DOTC/ATO richer by the millions annually), it should by all logic be in the list of the Philippines' priority airport devt projects.

That's why i also have apprehensions with the PPP initiative because when inflation rates will take a toll on the tariff that these private companies will be imposing, then surely the government will shoulder the difference, as P-Noy earlier promised to these private investors that "risks" will be minimized (very disturbing words from him).

It does not matter if which Region collects the highest amount of taxes, because when these funds reach the national coffers in Manila, they will just be pooled together and they won't even care to give proportional rewards for Regions and LGU's who collect the most taxes.

I understand your sentiments on this and we share almost the same, this only exposes the serious problems that we have in terms of fiscal devolution. Maybe it's time for a Federal Visayas State perhaps so that we can grow and not wait for Imperial Manila to share some leftovers?

We only have to blame the present centralized system that we have for this. And i think Tacloban's association with the Romualdez Family isn't really the culprit, but the ineffective and decrepit system of centralized project planning and management which only revolves around Imperial Manila :bash:

Speaking of imperial Manila, we all should know that the biggest share of the IRA goes to the cities (not even provinces!) of NCR. From the billions of pesos we generate every year, only half or a little over that come back to us as our share of the national budget. I think it's time to seriously think about separating ourselves from the central govt. In the Visayas, we have the resources to develop and chart our own course toward economic progress. I'm not pushing for independence but for greater autonomy similar to what the states in the US have.

Leftovers talaga!

I have a feeling dito sa PPP projects nato na pampalubag-loob lang ang mga napasama na mga airports sa PPP priority project lists. Manila-based priority projects ang inuna or uunahin. Kakahiya man sabihing, peso salamat USAid.(Di lang natin alam baka may kapalit.)

Federal state? I have advantage and disadvantage to this. I doubt it would work among visayan island-cum-municipalities.

Centralization of national budget, its a big unfair. We deserve to have a good return out from the national budget. Let it be!

Romualdezes here are performing well and well-loved among Taclobanons, there are some people here never forget what happened in the past and cannot move on by helping one another. And now, they're under the opposition party in present administration. Hope PNoy will not put different political color about this matter, remember that there are almost 3M "his BOSS" living in Eastern Visayas. Most of them are living poor.

^^ ok guys, chill... :D the point here is,... Taclobanon's are somehow frustrated coz we really need a new and advanced airport,... we are not even sure if talagang kasama sa priority projects ito ni Pnoy,... at isa pa, its unfair din to us,...kasi why? "Nasimulan na, at ba't di nalang tapusin",... why make another project instead?? thats what frustrates us coz we fear na baka hanggang matapos parin yung term ni Pnoy ay wala paring pagbabago dun,... now, yes... nasimulan na yung construction pero phase 1 palang yun,... now the question is matutuloy pa ba yung phase 2 hanggang sa final phase???

^^ i also agree with you,... coz we have to balance everything,... i think thats also one reason why a lot of people from the provinces migrates to Manila(which causes more pollution and over population) coz 90% of developments are focused in Manila,... remember, Metro Manila is never the whole Philippines,... and if Parliamentary system susundin natin then therefore we Really have to be sure that our leader is good,... hindi yung sipsip sa congreso,... :cheers1:

Health check-up by a kiosk for only 5 pesos!

Excerpt from the Column: Quidnunc's Neighbor
by: Chito de la Torre

For only five pesos, you can already get your heart rate, blood pressure, and body fat estimation.

Yes, just visit Mercury Drug at Salazar St., Tacloban. While waiting for your turn to buy the medicines that your doctor prescribed for you, you can easily get health information about yourself by simply dropping a 5-peso coin, in less than 3 minutes.

At that air-conditioned drugstore, you will find at your left, from the main entrance, a slender plastic-looking box standing tall near the western corner of the counter. It is called do-it-yourself health kiosk. Step on its platform, and drop your P5-coin into one of the two slits. A female voice will guide you immediately after that, on what to do next. Slide your left hand into the hole at your elbow level. The cloth-like material surrounding it will begin to expand until it grasps your left arm. This is examining your blood pressure. Next, insert your thumbs into the two smaller holes at your head level and hold the stainless surface around it. This studies your fat index, fat mass, and free fat mass. Then stand still, push one of the two icons (male and female) at your right eye level to indicate your gender, pressing it several times until your age appears on the screen. The voice will next tell you to pull out the stub at the lower portion of the kiosk. It also reminds you of your belongings.

You can take home and keep the 26-centimeter long stub which tells you YOUR MEASUREMENTS: Weight, Height, Blood Pressure (Maximum Systolic, Minimum Diastolic), Body Fat Estimation (Fat Index, Fat Mass, Free Fat Mass), and Heart Rate Analysis (Heart Rate, Maximum Heart Rate, Minimum Heart Rate). It also shows a graph of your heart rate.

The stub also provides you other helpful information which you can use as your REFERENCES, such as your current body mass index and the normal B.M.I. value, etcetera.

The do-it-yourself kiosk stub completes the information with the following advice:
This is not a medical act. * Blood pressure may vary. * Control your weight and B.P. * Do not self medicate. * Regularly consult your doctor or pharmacist.

This means, while you can have these data from your use of the kiosk, you may still need to see a doctor especially if you have a health problem.

Off-tangent, I can say that this facility of MDC is very, very helpful and useful. In my own case, because I have been ignoring the persistent prodding of my better half that I should visit our DAREA medical coordinator at a local hospital for a diagnosis of repeated muscular and abdominal pains that often cut short my night sleep, the kiosk has served a good purpose. It guided me with the information that I have changed a quite alarming lot at my age today. Imagine, my height reduced by 1.10 inches! Since high school, my height has been recorded at 5 feet 6 inches, and now, oh My God!, Im shorter at 54.2! For the past six months, I have not undergone a medical check-up, although a medical specialist had advised me to see him again in May after he prescribed medicines for the health defects he found in me last April yes, prostate was among them, except that, as he described it, it was on the border. Actually, I had detested seeing a doctor since that last check-up as I didnt want to go through the routine like B.P. taking, etcetera, for which I had to spend hours of waiting for my turn, as well as for the results and the doctors advice. Besides, visiting a doctor entails costly transportation. And so, I told the security guard at the MDC, this kiosk assistance is much, much cheaper, devoid of the usual boredom of waiting.

we may not contribute much to the economy in terms of tourism but in other areas of the economy (agri, industrial and energy) we deliver.

Don't get too touchy. Nobody is insinuating anything unless that's what's originally on your mind. Read my posts again so that you'll get the gist of the matter.

Again, it's not about the rankings of DZR that matter, it's the way our National Government based in Imperial Manila tends to think =>>> they prioritize projects in line with a national policy which is profit/revenue oriented, and not to the obvious needs of the stakeholders (e.g. DZR traffic needing a bigger terminal/runway)

Note: I am studying Public Management and Policy Administration in UP at the moment and this PPP Initiative is one of our class discussions. I made DZR as one of my examples, to prove that we do have a lopsided policy planning bureaucracy in our country that only favors Manila and Luzon and leaves projects in the Visayas and Mindanao "hanging". I hope you in SSC-Tacloban don't take this personally. I'm also from the Visayas and i also don't want how they run infrastructure development in our country. We share the same sentiments after all

Note: the figures i cited was only for the Province of Bohol.

Leyte govt hopes to bag Toshiba plant

TACLOBAN CITY - Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho L. Petilla recently asked Toshiba Information Equipment Philippines, Inc. to consider the province as a site for expansion.

Mr. Petilla told journalists here he made the pitch to a team led by Toshiba Information Equipment Philippines President Yoshiyuki Yano that visited him recently. "They are looking for destinations for their plants. I...made the presentation just so they would know our place as they look around," Mr. Petilla said.

RLC hikes capital to P8.2 B for expansion

By JAMES A. LOYOLA
November 22, 2010, 7:31pm
www.mb.com

MANILA, Philippines Robinsons Land Corporation is planning to raise its authorized capital stock by 173 percent to P8.2 billion from the current P3 billion to partly finance its expansion, mostly in property development.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the firm said its board of directors has approved the amendment Article Seventh of RLCs Amended Articles of Incorporation to increase its authorized capital stock.

The new capital come from the increase from 3.0 billion common shares with a par value of one peso per share to 8.2 billion common shares with a par value of P1.00 per share.

RLC posted a net income of P2.59 billion for the nine months ended June 30, up by 11 percent compared with the same period last year. EBITDA rose by 11 percent to P4.51 billion.

Real estate and hotel revenues was up by 6 percent to P7.94 billion against last years P7.47 billion.

Commercial Centers Division contributed 51 percent or P4.3 billion of the gross revenues posting a 40 percent growth.

Significant rental increments were contributed by the newly opened malls in Dumaguete, Ilocos Norte, General Santos, Tacloban and Davao. Metro Manila malls led by Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas, also contributed to the growth while other provincial malls also posted decent growth in rental revenues.

Moreover, cinema revenues contributed to the strong revenue growth of this division as RLC took over the cinema operations starting October 2009.

RLCs Residential Division accounted for 28 percent of RLCs revenues.

Its realized revenues declined by 27 percent to P2.33 billion due to lower completion of several projects. Several projects had lower realized revenues since these projects are nearing completion.

The Office Buildings Division contributed 10 percent or P846.8 million of RLCs revenues, up by 15 percent from last years P738.8 million. The increase in office rentals was due to rentals from Cybergate Centers 2 and 3.

^^ that is why Cebu and some Mindanao cities and provinces want a federal system kasi parang pinapabayaan tayo ng central national government in Manila.. Cebu contributes a lot to the country's coffers pero what does it get in return, wala.. i think LGUs in EV should support federalism,, dagdagan pa ng current president na parang president of Greater Manila Area lang.. tsk tsk..

New indigenous products sought

By PHOEBE JEN INDINO
November 22, 2010, 7:51pm
www.mb.com

EASTERN SAMAR, Philippines With the help of in-house designers from the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), an official from the Region 8 office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) bared that new improved products will be created with the use of abundant indigenous materials here.

"Since we now have a pool of in-house designers from EVSU, their designs will greatly help us enhance our fiber manufacturers products," said Cynthia Nierras, DTI 8 Regional Director.

The EVSU in-house designers are composed of 10 instructors from the fields of architecture and interior designing creating new designs to adequately assist in improving the marketability of fiber-made products like woven handbags, mats and bayong containers.

"In the past, our designs were very limited," she said, "but now we have developed new color combinations that are more attractive than our previous products."

Nierras explained, for instance, that their woven mats only used to have simple designs like horizontal and vertical patterns. However, at present, with the help of EVSU designers, manufacturers can now produce flower patterns with various color combinations.

Aside from new designs and color combinations, Nierras said that other new products like side tables, and shopping bags made of indigenous materials in this province will also be developed.

Fiber that is abundant here is "ticog," which is harvested, dyed and woven into mats, handbags and other products. A mat or banig made of the fiber ticog is durable. It is also soft, and becomes more smooth with use.

The raw material is sourced from farmers harvesting ticog reeds; the stems are sun-dried and then sold either whole or split. Ticog grows in the forests, swamps and rice fields of Leyte, Samar, Bohol and Mindanao.

Ticog reeds, considered the most important matting sedge in the country, are woven into sheets then machine-made into bags, hats, slippers, cushion pillows, and native wallets among others.

FYI, Winaray is our official name of our language/dialect and Waray/Waray-waray pertains to a person who is native from Leyte-Samar-Biliran islands or a person who is fluent in speaking the Winaray. Winaray also spreads its influence to its neighboring regions like Masbate and Sorsogon in Bicol Region and Surigao provinces (perhaps including in your City) in CARAGA region. Like what @mario had said, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO WARAYS. Culture. Heritage. Historical.

^^On my own calculation, I think to the whole population of both Leyte and So. Leyte-including Biliran, the percentage of Cebuano speaking people ranging from 35 to 45 percent.

And in whole Samar island, I think its only 5 to 7 percent Cebuano speaking there. And the rest are Waray-speaking but there is an Island town (Capul) in Northern Samar who did not speak Waray nor Cebuano. They are called Abaknon. Their dialect is Inabaknon which is similar to Indonesian dialect.

The towns of Allen, Lavezares, Rosario and Biri in Northern Samar are speaking like a "Bisakol". A Visayan-Waray and Bicolano combination of dialect. Similar to that of Matnog, Irosin, Sta Magdalena, and Bulusan in Sorsogon.

City procurement process streamlined (http://leytesamardaily.net/2010/11/city-procurement-process-streamlined/)

TACLOBAN CITY-In a bid to strengthen and improve the procurement process of the city government, a half-day seminar was conducted for all supply officers and property custodians of the various departments, offices and units of the city government of Tacloban. The activity was organized by Edward Manadong, supervising administrative officer of the General Services Office.

The speakers were City Administrator, Engr. Roberto Muñoz; GSO Department Head Rudolph Mate and Internal Audit Service Head Tony Tan. They outlined the procurement process for a common understanding of the whole procedure and methods to be followed and in expediting processing of procurement documents and payments.

Manadong explained that the activity was done “in preparation for the 2011 procurement whereby “we want every department and offices to be efficient in the processing of documents.” “We also discussed the different problematic and weak areas which we would like to straighten up.”

^^^^^^In other words, if the new administration knows the left hanging projects from previous administation such as the DZR airport, it should be materialized immediately, one thing reason is that the DZR is unaccomplished project by xPGMA or even in the other areas of the country that has the same issues. Like here in Tacloban City having the 7th bussiest airport in the country as we agreed this before, it's overdue already. From the past 1998 where xMayor Bejo Romualdez initiated with the DZR airport to be redevelop. Until now it's the same issue. Maybe bacause the Aquino admin. is taking personally against the Romualdezes? It's just a sin for us to accuse PNOY.

Now, the eastern visayas people is just dismayed about PNOY what he is doing to our region. People here knows the best for the region.

Our president should know the "ONE AT A TIME" meaning, finish first the undone before doing another thing.:storm:

Paintings of Gabby Abellana at CIE

The painting on the 7Arts

Tacloban City Fiscal Ruperto Golong and Copra Queen Nydia Ty Yap unveiled the two huge paintings at the international school Center in Education (CIE) School for Leaders. Richard Ang, President of the said school (inset) commissioned Cebu artist Gabriel Abellana to do an oil painting in a 4 x8 canvass. In the first painting, Abellana has the 7arts as inspirationmusic, sculpture, theater, film, photography, art, dancing and added sports. The second painting is on marine life. The paintings truly impressed art connoisseur Ang I am happy with the outcome. Gabby is one of the best painters in the country today. His work will surely interest the CIE pupils to see the beauty of the marine life and be conscious of protecting our endangered species, as well as appreciate the 7Arts. Abellana is also a professor at University of San Carlos, Cebu and administers the Cebu Academy of the Arts. Guests at the unveiling are Architect Baysa who designed the CIE building, Bank Managers Corita Ong, Boboy Quintero of Allied Bank and RCBC respectively. Angs ever-supportive wife Nancy was also present. The CIE Pupils and teachers of the school gave intermission numbers. * (By: Vicky C. Arnaiz)

Grand Winners

http://leytesamardaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/pix61.jpg

The fashion industry in Tacloban is yet to arise and Robinsons Place Tacloban in Nov. 19, 2010 throws one catalyst to make hasten its long-awaited maturity The Robinsons Supermodel Search 2010. Jyca Therese Mancao (2nd from left) and Matt William R. Po (3rd from left), pose with pride as they are crowned the first-ever Robinsons Supermodel 2010 Grand Prize Winners. Together with them are First Runners-Up Shanee Buenaventura (far left) and Ulysses Maderazo (far right). Among the clothes modeled by the 23 contenders were from Blued, Bayo, Kamiseta, Surfers Paradise, plus designer gowns by Angelita Borja-Ragus and Avant-garde designed casuals by Mike Sorillo. Judging them were renowned designers Frederick Peralta from Manila, Angelita Borja-Ragus of Iloilo, and multi-title holder model Marco Odejar.

It has been indeed a four-month battle for these young men and women before the consecrated day of the grand finals and their discipline and skill has rewarded them well. Though this search aimed to discover the young talents in ramp modeling, it also in its latent form intended to awaken Taclobanon designers young and old to start defining fashion in Eastern Visayas. We look forward for next years Robinsons Supermodel Search, and we hope to see more of Taclobanon fashion displayed.

Special thanks to host Mae Militante, stage director Rofel John Parreño, stage production by Moleta Signs and Crafts and RCLS Lights and Sounds and to our beloved partners for making this event a momentous one. (PR)

MLhullier inaugurates its ice plant in Brgy. Bagacay
(http://leytesamardaily.net/2010/11/mlhullier-inaugurates-its-ice-plant-in-brgy-bagacay/)

TACLOBAN CITY – The Michel J. Lhuillier (MLhuillier) Company inaugurated yesterday its own ice plant and storage house in the city.

The ice plant, the first of its kind owned by the company, is situated at Barangay Bagacay where their restaurant and farm dressed chicken outlets are located.

General Manager Amie Enriquez, in an interview, said that the ice plant company is another business established by Michel J. Lhuillier aside from the four restaurants, taxi, pawnshop and farm dressed chicken that they have. The company serves not only in the region, but also in the entire country as well.

Enriquez pointed out that the opening of the ice plant is another employment opportunities for the people looking for work.

The company has so far employs 160 persons working for its various businesses operating in the city .

With the opening of the ice plant, demands among restaurants, among others, on ice would be met, Enriquez said.

She also assure the public that the ice that they are producing are clean and sold at a reasonable price.“The target customers of ours are the restaurants owners, people who are planning to conduct parties, distributors of chicken, fish, and pork as well as everyone from the entire Eastern Visayas,” she added.

Enriquez also disclosed that the water that they are using is from the Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD).

“We are rendering free delivery of ice to everyone from anywhere in the region for we have six delivery trucks to be used,” GM discussed.

Enriquez said that their decision to operate various businesses in Tacloban was a proof on their trust on the leadership of the city government under Mayor Alfred Romualdez.(REY GERILLA GRADO)

Mayor Romualdez urges all commercial establishments in Tacloban to put up CCTVs

TACLOBAN CITY – This city’s local chief executive is urging all commercial establishments in the city to initiate the installation of closed-circuit televisions to deter criminal elements.

“It would be better if banks and malls within the city will have their own monitoring scheme through the use of surveillance cameras,” Mayor Alfred Romualdez said in an interview.

Romualdez himself had noted that no preinstalled surveillance cameras are built in major commercial establishments in the city despite threats of robberies and other possible criminal acts.

Earlier, Romualdez said he was mulling for the installation of CCTVs along main streets in the city as a reaction to the series of killing incidents that happened with the city.He plans to allocate at least P2 million for the plan.

“Why are we going to wait for a robbery to happen? So better if they install the cameras,” he said.

This proposal of the city mayor get the support from the city police office saying that banks and commercial establishments need to have such surveillance strategy to deter unscrupulous individuals to carry out their illegal acts.(ALVIN P. CARDINES)

Mayor Alfred Initiates Parol Making Contest for Christmas 2010 (http://www.tacloban.gov.ph/news/mayor-alfred-initiates-parol-making-contest-for-christmas-2010/)

Tacloban City – In the spirit of Christmas festivity, Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez initiated the Parol Making Contest; an attraction for the parol lovers in Tacloban as well as an avenue for parol makers to showcase their creativity, ingenuity and imagination.

Aptly themed “Christmas Star”, participants were instructed to create parol entries with the following specifications: it should have a dimension of 4ft x 4ft x 4ft, be made of indigenous materials, be well lighted and can be displayed outdoors.

The Parol Making Contest, which started on November 15, is just one of the many colorful activities that Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez and First Lady Councilor Cristina Romualdez have lined up for the Christmas season. The deadline for the submission of all entries is on November 26.

In an interview, Mayor Romualdez encouraged the use of indigenous materials found and produced in the region. This will promote our local products as well as inject a touch to the parols unique only to Tacloban.

According to Mayor Alfred the contest is not just a means of enjoyment for the arts and for the season, but it is also an opportunity for parol makers to mass produce and ultimately, earn from their creations.

Great prizes await the winners of the contest. Taclobanons who are still interested to join may contact Event Director Don Dolina at the office of Hon. Cristina G. Romualdez at Balyuan Building through contact numbers: 325-4052 or 09185871218.

Then you should have run for Mayor in the next Election. By that time, Mayor Romualdez has finished his term. And, you already got my vote!

Kidding aside, LGU has no authority to manage the DZR airport operations. Remember the MOA that the City gov't is planning to shoulder the expenses in constructing the new airport terminal by following City Arch'ts design? I think it end up nothing but a sketch plan. Mine is not to disappoint everyone here. Just hold-on guys, malay natin mas high-tech pa sa mga recent newly constructed airports sa bansa ngayon ang ipapatayo ng national gov't dito sa atin. Facelifting of the Tacloban supermarket

http://leytesamardaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/cart27.jpg

The latest face lifting activity at the Tacloban Supermarket that happens to be the banana section is a welcome move of the city mayor. In an interview with the president of the Tacloban Supermarket Vendors Federation, they were happy that their request to improve the banana section was granted by the city government. It is very dismal to see ripe bananas ready for eating just placed on top of sacks right on the floor or concrete pavement. This observation goes with the rest of the other farm products sold in the market.

There was a clamor of our brothers from the marketplace to support small vendors after they noted that marketers have flocked to the mall or superstores and groceries. People have to realize that most of the market goers are working mothers who do not have the luxury of time to spend on marketing food needs of the family. They prefer going to the mall as the place is a one-stop-place where they could get what they need in just one go.

Besides people have become very conscious on sanitation and health that mothers would rather spend more on goods with value added, like at a higher price they could buy "cleaned fish" already.

Once they reach home, all they do is rinse the meat or fish once and store them in freezers. The same is true with spices; these are already in ready packs that free the working homemaker with the added work of sorting and selecting from so many. Fruits are conveniently arranged in one section of the mall which can also be bought in ready to eat packs.

The most important factor in mall marketing is not only the convenience and style but really on the cleanliness and sanitation aspect of the area where food items are stored and placed. The fish section of the mall has running water where the fish are cleaned and washed.

Unsold meat, poultry, fish and fish products are placed in chillers and/or freezers ensuring freshness of products, not to mention that the people are also assured of the quality of meat coming from good sources and passing through certain standards. These are the various aspects that our vendors and businessmen must consider in the supermarket to be able to hold on to their customers.

European design Christmas tree to be lighted on December 3 (http://leytesamardaily.net/2010/11/european-design-christmas-tree-to-be-lighted-on-december-3/)

TACLOBAN CITY – A European inspired design of Christmas tree will soon be put up at the Balyuan ground, this city, and scheduled to be lighted on Dec. 3.

The lighting of the giant Christmas tree will be spearheaded by the city’s First Couple, Mayor Alfred Romualdez and wife, Councilor Cristina Romualdez.

In a press conference, Councilor Romualdez has described this year’s design as “unique.”

“It is unique because the Christmas tree will be colorful and the the characters on the Belen will be moving just like the three kings, and the baby Jesus,” Councilor Romualdez said.

It was learned from her that the proposed Christmas tree will be 12 meters height and 10 feet wide.

The city councilor did not revealed how much was the city government would spend for the construction of the Christmas tree.

“I cannot say for now the exact amount to be used because we would be using some of the materials that we used last year which is still good,” she added.

She also said that “baratillo” stands would be constructed in the area where promenaders can buy some items.

On the other hand, Norma Morantte, consultant for tourism of the city government said that the “baratillo” that they will put up around the giant tree would be in cooperation with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

“We decided to put up a baratillo around the tree so that people would have another option to go there. They will not only be going there to enjoy themselves, but at the same time, have some things which they could buy,” Morantte said.

To promote Tacloban, encourage businessmen to come, are reasons for visiting Japan – Councilor Romualdez (http://leytesamardaily.net/2010/11/to-promote-tacloban-encourage-businessmen-to-come-are-reasons-for-visiting-japan-councilor-romualdez/)

TACLOBAN CITY- To promote the city and to encourage more investors to establish businesses in Tacloban are just some of the things that could be generated out of the scheduled official visit to Fukuyama, Japan, a sister city of Tacloban, by the four members of the city council.

The Tacloban delegation is to be lead by Councilor Cristina Gonzalez Romualdez. She will be join by Councilors Jerry Uy, Eden Chua-Pineda; Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President Rachelle Chua-Pineda and Frederick Chua.

According to Romualdez, their scheduled Japan visit will be from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1.

She said that the local government of Fukuyama, Japan has invited them to visit their place.

Romualdez described Fukuyama as one of the most progressive cities of Japan which is located just near the historic city of Hiroshima. Fukuyama is composed of 46 councilors.

“I am very happy that the city government of Tacloban was invited by the local government of Fukuyama, Japan,” Romualdez said.

The councilor also said that they will be joining with the city government officials of Fukuyama in activities like tree planting, visiting their water systems and their historical places.

“We would also be hearing from them the best practices that their city government is doing to make their place progressive,” she added.

Furthermore, the city councilor said that she will be delivering speech at the plenary hall of Fukuyama on behalf of Mayor Alfred Romualdez who could not attend the visit due to his busy schedule.

Councilor Romualdez expects that the local council of Fukuyama will be providing assistance to the city of Tacloban like donating trucks and set of computers, among others.

“This would be the first time that we will be witnessing their culture. It would be a pleasure to us that we would be able to learn and experience their culture and have an idea of their new technologies since they are more advanced than us,” Romualdez stressed.

However, Councilor Romualdez said that they would not find it hard to promote the city for they will be bringing with them an audio-visual presentation prepared by Andy Macapagal which focuses on the development of the city through the years.

“Every time that I deliver a speech, I always say that Tacloban is a beautiful city by the bay, with beautiful people who always smiles when meeting foreigners,” she added.

“It is also evident that Tacloban is a progressive city because we are said to be the center of economy in the region. Also, there are many people from nearby places that choose to live here because of its development,” Romualdez ended

If for investments is their purpose, why don't they consider Toshiba's intent of putting up a manufacturing site in the city....that won't cost that much..gggrrr@#$%^&....
