THE SAN JUANICO GOLF CLUB STORY

By: Alex A. Viernas

The San Juanico Golf is an 18-hole course lay-out with the first nine holes already completed. Nestled in the rolling hilly country side of Cabalawan, a barrio of Tacloban City, and only about ten kilometers from the city proper, its demanding terrain affably awaits the taming hands of teeming golfers. For the course prides itself with 51 hectares of hill and valley – and valley hill – with a natural rugged honestly very few golf courses today can offer.

It has been said that golf is a game for the affluent. Golf courses usually abound in the leading cities and prosperous communities where trade and industry flourish. Though modesty small, Tacloban had long felt the need for one such course. In fact, in 1958, eleven years age, the Tacloban Golf and Country Club was organized so that the sport could be introduced in Leyte. But like a baby, golf is easy to conceive yet difficult to deliver. Through the years, therefore, it remained a mere aspiration and almost an empty dream until four years ago when the golfing fire was fanned anew with the construction of the mini-golf links at Liberty Park. At about the same time Dr. Dado De Guzman also landscaped the premises of the TB Pavilion into a beautiful pitching golf course. Despite its endemic hospital surroundings and a cramped criss-crossing 18-hole pitching course, it drew together a pack of enthusiasts who formed the sampaguita Golf Club. Their regular rounds of pitching and putting blossomed into camaraderie and organizational discipline inherent in the game. Their number grew, quite inevitably, and the need for wider golfing space became a nagging issue.

Local golfers realized that building a real golf course is an expensive enterprise, and feared that Tacloban was not big enough to maintain one. But they could not just keep waiting for some benefactors. The heat was on; their crowding number could no longer settle for mini-golf. They campaigned for public support and solicited more members believing that a Park and Golf Course in Tacloban could serve as a “selling point” or attraction to others, besides serving the recreational needs of Leyte Samar. To the skeptics, this rather ambitious plan was bound to go … phfft! But zeal and real esprit de corps could not be contained. And so, together, the members pooled their financial resources into a corporate body, scouted the country side, and finally came upon the 51-hectare spread in Cabalawan.

The birth of the San Juanico Golf Club did not end with its incorporation; nor, for that matter, with its acquisition of the land. It was only the beginning of the labor – this labor of sporting love. There was much work to do. Clearing the jungle and hiring skilled workers to develop the fairways and greens was an expensive task far beyond their means. Consequently, they had to do the work themselves. They had to toil, and clean and clear the course with their sweat, in the spirit of bayanihan. And under the leadership of Dado Guzman, they have finally laid out the course after consulting several standard golf course designs.

The beauty of San Juanico’s creation lies in its retained natural features and contours that when you golf along its course you sense the challenge of nature at its best. Endowed with this natural topography and a constant breeze, San Juanico may yet become a Shangri-la for golfers.

RLC expanding gohotels.ph chain, offers franchise plans
By JAMES A. LOYOLA
January 29, 2011, 2:48am

MANILA, Philippines – Robinsons Land Corporation’s budget hotel chain gohotels.ph is now expanding and will be opening sites in Palawan, Tacloban, Dumaguete, Bacolod and Cebu.

In a statement, gohotels.ph’s general manager Elizabeth D. Gregorio has also announced that they have started accepting franchisees to speed up its growth.

In the same way that sister company Cebu Pacific has changed the Philippine airline industry, gohotels.ph aims to redefine the hotel industry with the introduction of the value hotel concept. Following the no frills model, gohotels.ph is composed purely of standard rooms.

Three months after the grand opening of its pilot branch of gohotels.ph in Cybergate Plaza along EDSA, gohotels.ph has been proven to be an incredible success.

“Operating as a value hotel, gohotels.ph provides eight benefits to each guest at reasonable prices. These include quality beds, hot and cold rain shower, complementary Wifi, LCD TV, safety and security, convenient location, access to transport, and a fun and friendly atmosphere,” said Gregorio.

She added that hotel facilities such as restaurants, laundry and transportation services are operated by third parties as “this set-up allows the hotel to focus on its competitive advantage, boosting occupancy and revenues.”

As a result of this vision and the operational success of gohotels.ph Cybergate Plaza, the business model has proven to be well received by the public.

Gregorio said the convenience of booking online and making quality amenities available at reasonable prices, the segment shows much promise for expansion. Guests are not only business travelers and families on a budget, but also include long-staying tourists and even locals. “At gohotels.ph, travelers know they can always expect dependable, clean, and attractive lodgings at affordable prices, and the reaction from customers has exceeded expectations,” she said.

TV5 to spend P10B to become No. 1
Written by Lenie Lectura / Reporter

MediaQuest Holdings Inc., the Media holding company owned by the PLDT retirement fund of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., has allocated P10 billion in for the continuing expansion of TV5, to make its television unit the number one broadcasting network in the country.

Being in a hurry to build the infrastructure TV5 needs to make its dream come true, MediaQuest has allocated most of this budget, or about P7 billion, until 2011. The remaining portion of the budget will be spent until 2014.

“To build out the entire facility we will spend around P9 to P10 billion,” MediaQuest president Ray Espinosa said last week.

The investment, he said, will be spent for broadcast transmission, network and operations, inclusive of new studios and offices.

MediaQuest has earlier projected TV5’s revenue to hit P1-billion by the end of the year but is not expecting the station to become immediately profitable. Espinosa said such may happen in the coming years because “we are in a start-up move” adding that it is still in the process of building up its facilities including the acquisition of vehicles for improved mobility of its talents.”

Based on a five-year plan, we are working toward becoming profitable sometime in our fifth year,” Espinosa said.

Espinosa has expressed optimism on achieving profitability, which he said is anchored on the increase in advertising revenues of TV5’s programs such as Talentadong Pinoy, Midnight DJ, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Face to Face.

“Advertising revenues will more than double this year compared to last year,” he said, adding that the ratings of TV5’s hit shows are doing very well that many continue to place advertisements during the time slots when these are shown.

TV5 will start the construction of its new headquarters, which will house six studios, in Mandaluyong City in November this year but will retain its three studios in Novaliches.

The TV station, which MediaQuest acquired from businessman Antonio Cojuangco, will also strengthen its reach nationwide and plans to put up a station abroad.  “Definitely any network would have to do that. TV5 Global will be our foreign station. We have more than enough local programs to put up a good network for overseas,” said Espinosa.

TV5 will also put up a UHF channel and a radio station in the FM bandwidth. “The timetable for the overseas station, UHF channel and radio station are all Asap. Everything is being done simultaneously but the interest is to do it quickly because we know that this will provide revenues,” said the official.

Espinosa admitted that TV5 has a lot of catching up to do to beat Channel 2 of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. and Channel 7 of GMA Network. “We have to aspire to be number one. We will put our resources to achieve that goal.”

Earlier, MediaScape Inc., another unit of MediaQuest, has sought the approval of its application by the National Telecommunications Commission to put up 50 broadcasting systems nationwide. If approved, the facilities could be utilized by TV5.

Among the areas where MediaScape plans to put up TV stations are Butuan, Zambales, Coron, Ormoc, Bohol, Tacloban and Albay.

GK targets 15,000 informal settlers in the city thru partnerships (http://leytesamardaily.net/2011/01/gk-targets-15000-informal-settlers-in-the-city-thru-partnerships/)

TACLOBAN CITY – The Gawad Kalinga (GK) is targeting to provide shelter to an estimated 15,000 informal settlers in this city through their partnership with various civic and private sectors based in this city, especially with the help of Mayor Alfred Romualdez, said Jade Quicot, GK city coordinator at the weekly press forum “Express it at the Park.”

At present, the GK has two pilot areas in the city, one in Cabalawan where an initial total of 16 residential houses constructed through the process of volunteerism are to be awarded to its beneficiaries by March.

The other project site is in Palanog area that covers 10 hectares with a total of 77 houses to be constructed.

But Quicot revealed that in their Palanog project only 37 potential beneficiaries are active in the various activities conducted by their organization like in their values formation seminar and on housing construction activities.

Aside from Tacloban, there are other GK sites in the region-Leyte with a total of 30 GK villages, among which aside from the two in the city of Tacloban are found in the municipality of Palo, Kananga, Bato, Ormoc City, among others.

Quicot revealed that aside from the two project sites, the GK management with the help of the city government is now on the stage of planning to put another GK site in the Sto. Niño area, a barangay in the northern part of the city which most of the beneficiaries are the informal settlers residing in Sitio Alimasag, San Jose.

Residents in Sitio Alimasag are among to be affected on the planned expansion and upgrading of the DZR Airport.

Quicot added that in the process of awarding the title of houses to the beneficiaries, there are certain qualifications that each beneficiary should meet and abide. This include their sincerity to help the organization in the construction of their would-be houses and by attending various seminars organized by the coordinators such as the value formation seminar conducted every week.

He added that beneficiaries of houses from GK are bound to observe and follow the condition stipulated in the “deed of restriction” that includes the non-conversion of their houses into a boarding houses, store or sell it to other individuals.

“If they wanted to engaged in business inside the GK village, we had allocated a space inside the village where they can put-up their business,” said Quicot.

Aside from providing area for business purposes, Quicot added that there is also an area allocated for schools, multi-purposes area and other buildings that is important in a community.

He added the organization is strongly requiring beneficiaries to have a small garden where they can plant vegetables for their own consumption.

“This project is to encourage residents in the village to be closer with nature and to allow them to have fresh foods served on their meals,” Quicot explains.

Water shortage hits Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY - Water supply in this city and nearby towns will be reduced until Feb. 5 as the Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD) desilts major sources.

The rivers in Pastrana and Dagami towns are heavily silted as a result of the continuous rains, said LMWD General Manager Nestor P. Villasin.

"Due to the continuous heavy rainfall in the region, volume of silts and sediments causes decrease in the volume of raw water entering our intake structures in Tingib, Pastrana, Leyte," Mr. Villasin stated in an advisory issued yesterday.

The desiltation would cause a 20% decrease in water production and will result in low water pressure to no water in far points of distribution such as Tacloban City.

Ma. Teresa D. Pascua, LMWD information officer, said in an interview that the water sources will not be totally shut during desiltation.

"All efforts are being undertaken by LMWD management in order to restore normal water supply the soonest," she said.

"Our personnel are there in the source to do desilting 24 hours to prevent total closure,."

The Pastrana source supplies the water requirement of Pastrana, Sta. Fe, and Palo towns.

Another source in Dagami delivers water to the towns of Dagami, Tabon-tabon, Tanauan and Tolosa.

The two sources have a combined daily water output of 31,000 cubic meters.

Meanwhile, the water district assured the public water from the facility is potable despite flooding.

Transmission and distribution lines are regularly inspected for possible leaks.

Ms. Pascua said that if water is turbid, concessionaires have been advised to check service pipes and call their office for immediate repair.

"We monitor the quality of water through our personnel deployed in different points," she added. -- Sarwell Q. Meniano

Cristina Advocates Fitness & Wellness For Women's Month

By: Gay B. Gaspay

Tacloban City – Tacloban First Lady & Councilor Cristina G. Romualdez, as City Committee chair for health will be advocating for fitness and wellness events this coming March to celebrate women’s month.

In an interview with Councilor Romualdez, she said women residing in Tacloban will be invited to join several events in observing womens month which will keep them physically fit and well.

As a woman advocate, Councilor Romualdez supports activities that pertain to the welfare and wellbeing of women.

“A healthy lifestyle is important for our women,” Councilor Cristina said especially that now a days, the food that we take can lead to illnesses.

“ We’re fond of eating junk food rich in preservatives”, she further said.

Cancer now a days, one of the top 10 leading diseases and top ten causes of death are attributed to the food we eat, Councilor Romualdez said.

Not only that, the unhealthy food we take also affects major organs of our body. It redound to the unhealthy lifestyle we are in to, she added.

Fitness activities as exercise is important to our body. This coming Women’s month will keep women of Tacloban busy with fun walks, fun run, taebo aerobics and ballroom dancing.

To commemorate the declared month of March as Women’s Month, free body massage, reflex, facial makeover, hair style, manicure and pedicure, a special treat, according to Councilor Romualdez, for being a woman.

TFCCCI spearheads Chinese New Year celeb

TACLOBAN CITY - A grand celebration of the Chinese New Year, a first in the city, will be held at the Balyuan Convention Center tomorrow, February 4, 2011. The activity will be spearheaded by the Tacloban Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Inc. led by Go Tic Ching (Jack Uy) of Asia Stars Group of Companies. The Chinese community and the Filipinos have harmoniously embraced this tradition of celebrating the Chinese New Year but mostly in the privacy of their homes.

"This year will be different. We want to celebrate it as a community. We want to have more social gathering of the Chinese and Filipino Chinese communities for unity and peace. Part of the activity will be the traditional Lion Dancea dance performed to ward off evil spirit and bring more prosperity. Sky lanterns will also be part of the activity. Ticket holders will be given a sky lantern and they will be given a piece of paper to write their wishes to be pasted on it, before the sky lanterns will be released at the Balyuan grounds. Fireworks will culminate the acivity," said Go Tic Ching.

The sky lanterns are commonly used in festivals, which invite more luck and prosperity. It is said that if you offer it to Buddha, you will receive wisdom that you have not yet possessed. The light also symbolizes a guide to the path of knowledge and righteousness.

This is the Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac. The rabbit is the 4th position in the Chinese zodiac which has character traits such as compassion, creativity, friendliness and sensitivity. This is touted to be a more placid year than the ferocious Tiger last year.

Mayor Alfred Romualdez offered the Balyuan Convention Center to be used for free. (VICKY ARNAIZ)

City Treasurer’s Office surpasses January revenue target
READ 26

TACLOBAN CITY- After the 16-day extension granted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod, the City Treasurer’s Office was able to surpass their revenue target for the month of January.

In an interview with City Treasurer Zosima “Susan” Cordaño, she said they were able to beat the P90 million tax collection goal of last month only.

To recall, the first deadline set by the city government for renewal of permits and licenses was last January 15.

But with the heavy downpour experienced in the city for weeks, the city treasurer realized that there was a need to extend the time for business permits and licenses renewal.

“Based on the partial computations of our January collection until last night (January 31), close to P86 million was able to enter the city’s coffer,” Cordaño said.

She said she is optimistic that they were able to go beyond the tax target since there are still collections that need to be posted.
The Kanhuraw Business Center (KBC), which includes the city treasurer and licensing division, extended their services up to 7:30 in the evening yesterday to accommodate around 400 more taxpayers who were still inside the vicinity to beat the deadline of business and permits renewal.

Cordaño said they decided to accommodate those who were still inside the KBC vicinity considering that it was already the deadline for the extension period.

“We decided to accommodate them considering that they really wanted to beat the deadline and at the end of the day, we thought that the city government should give them a special treatment since they are our boss as our taxpayers,” she said.

The city treasurer is confident that those taxes they have collected, which official receipts need to be posted today will be more than enough to comply with the revenue target.

Meanwhile, Cordaño acknowledged the big contribution of the local tri-media in their information campaign to the taxpayers in the city.

“The media has been a great help to us in informing the taxpayers in the city to renew their business licenses and permits in the city this year,” Cordaño said.

She also mentioned that the early posting of the campaign materials, such as banners which were posted in some areas in the city November last year, has also helped them in their success in last month’s tax collections. (EDEN BENUSA-REYES)

City Council names bus terminal road as Pres. Sergio Osmeña Avenue

TACLOBAN CITY In recognition of the historical contribution and services rendered by President Sergio Osmeña to the people of Tacloban, the city government here through the members of the 11th council, approved a resolution naming the new bus terminal road as President Sergio Osmeña Avenue.

The road named after President Osmeña would be from the junction of Paseo de Legaspi up to the exit point of the Abucay Terminal.

According to Councilor Jerry Uy, chair for the committee on laws, rules and privileges, the suggestion of naming the said road was based on the proposal made by Professor Pablo Amascual, chief administrative officer and professor of the social science department of Leyte Normal University.

Uy said that based on a study conducted by Amascual, President Osmeña stayed in Tacloban together with General Douglas McArthur during the liberation from the Japanese occupation. He also said that after the liberation, President Osmeña occupied the Leyte Capitol Building at that time. He stayed in this city from October 20, 1944 up to February, 1945.

It was also noted that President Osmeña was one among others who were responsible for restoring the economy, opening the schools, hospitals and Red Cross centers and rebuilding the country after the war.

Before the ordinance was approved by the members of the city council, the committee on laws, rules and privileges conducted first a committee hearing last January 11, 2011.

Present at the said hearing were Pablo Amascual; Robert Hidalgo; City Engineers Office representative, Engr. Armenita Caña, Brgy Chairman Lorna Panis of Brgy. 65, and Councilors Niel Glova, Eden Pineda and TataGranados.

During the hearing, Roland Hidalgo, city planning officer, articulated that in renaming a road, it should be based on the historical significance done by the person.

According to Hidalgo, Osmeña having served the people of Tacloban and having brought the seat of the presidency for a brief period after the liberation is a matter to be recognized.

Engr. Caña revealed that the length and width of that particular road meets the requirement to be called an avenue.

The proposal of the city council for such ordinance has been approved by the National Historical Institute pursuant to the requirement of the provisions of the Local Government Code. (REY GERILLA GRADO)

Rep. Montejo says there is a chance for the P5B DZR airport rehab work

Leyte governor Carlos Jericho “Icot” L. Petilla leadS the cutting of ribbon during the inauguration of the tanod outpost in Brgy. Impo during his visit on Jan. 29,2011. With him is Mayor Prospero Brazil , ABC Pres. Tatas Brazil and Brgy. Captain Lino Caobalijo of Brgy Impo.(PMRC)

TACLOBAN CITY- Rep. Neil Benedict Montejo of the An Waray partylist group said there is still a chance for the P5 billion-worth Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZR) airport rehabilitation project to proceed under the incumbency of President Noynoy Aquino.

But Montejo, who is a member of the committee on transportation at the House of Representatives, reminded that the support of at least all the congressmen in the region is necessary so that the implementation of this particular project could be hastened.

It can be noted that the on-going rehabilitation of the DZR airport is reportedly encountering problems because the national government is withholding the release of the necessary funds.

Montejo admitted that the P5 billion funds required to complete the rehabilitation of the airport could not be easily provided in lump sum.

“It would be very hard for the government to release the amount in lump sum. That’s why we want to ask the help of Pres. Aquino on this,” Montejo said.

Montejo said there are suggestions arising because of this reported problem with the implementation of the DZR airport and one of these is the proposal for an installment basis of providing funds for the project.

He said the lump sum may not be possible but the staggered scheme of allotting one billion pesos each year for the project might just work out.

In this manner, the P5 billion total funds requirement for the DZR airport rehabilitation project could be completed just before the term of Pres. Aquino ends.

Another proposal that may be viable, according to Montejo, is the Public Private Partnership or PPP which the President himself has endorsed in several instances to various government undertakings in the country.

“I will support whichever way is easier, reasonable, and practical that could fast track the implementation of the project. I will support any proposal as any improvement of the airport would be for the good of the region as well,” Montejo said.

According to him, the rehabilitation of the airport is very much needed as Tacloban is the center or hub in the region.

“The rehabilitation of the project has already been started… there is still a chance for it to be completed despite the negative reports. That’s why I am talking to various congressmen,” Montejo said.

According to Montejo, more than P200 million was already spent for the site development of the DZR airport which needs to be continued.

“This is already the last part of the second phase of the project. I learned that there is already scarcity of funds and if there will be no additional allotment, the project will likely be stopped,” Montejo said.

Montejo said they would lobby for funds coming from the Office of the President to be provided for the continuation of the airport rehabilitation or perhaps the President could endorse the same undertaking to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) for additional support. Robredo cites Tacloban LGU, 226 others for compliance on full disclosure (http://leytesamardaily.net/2011/02/robredo-cites-tacloban-lgu-226-others-for-compliance-on-full-disclosure/)

TACLOBAN CITY- Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo on Thursday lauded local chief executives of at least 227 local government units (LGUs) for complying with the full disclosure policy of the DILG, even as he urged other LGUs to follow suit.

“The highly urbanized city of Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez, for adhering to DILG”s full disclosure memorandum,” Robredo specified.
The full disclosure, which requires LGUs to post their financial transactions and expenditures in conspicuous places in their localities as well as on their websites, is in accordance with President Benigno Aquino’s anti-corruption measures towards good governance.

Robredo said that of the total 227 LGUS that complied with the policy this year, 10 are provinces, 25 are cities and 192 are municipalities. There are 80 provinces, 122 cities and 1,512 municipalities or a total of 1,714 LGUs throughout the country.

“These LGUs are exemplars of the kind of government that we want to have, one that upholds transparency and accountability in all its dealings,” Robredo said, even as he explained that compliance with the full disclosure policy is now a mandatory requirement under the General Appropriations Act.

Earlier, the Department issued Memorandum Circular 2010-083 requiring all provinces, cities and municipalities to publicly disclose their financial transactions by posting them in conspicuous places within local government-owned public buildings, publishing in newspapers of general circulation and in their websites.

Documents and transactions that are required to be posted by LGUs include the following: Annual Budget Report; Quarterly Statement of Cash Flows; Statement of Receipts and Expenditures; Trust Fund (PDAF) Utilization; Quarterly Report of SEF (Special Education Fund) Utilization; and 20% Component of the IRA Utilization, among others.

“I am very optimistic that other LGUs that have not yet complied with the requirement will do so,” said Robredo.

He also said that in the coming days, he will be visiting various provinces in the country to monitor their compliance.

Robredo reminded local officials that non-compliance of the disclosure policy may subject them to administrative sanction for gross negligence or dereliction of duty under Section 60 of the Local Government Code of 1991.

Meanwhile, DILG Regional Office-8 Myles Joseph Colasito disclosed the list of LGUs with full compliance are as follows: for the provinces, Capiz, Negros Occidental, Aklan, Iloilo (Region 6); Siquijor; Biliran; Sarangani, Cotabato; Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur.

For cities: Cadiz, Escalante, Himamaylan, Kabankalan, La Carlota, Sagay, San Carlos, Sipalay, Talisay, Bacolod, Iloilo, Passi, Roxas, Silay, Victorias (Region VI); Cebu, Tanjay, Bais (Region VII); highly urbanized city of Tacloban and Ormoc (Region VIII); Cagayan de Oro (Region X); Cotabato, General Santos, and Kidapawan (Region XII); Butuan (Region XIII) and Baguio City (CAR).

Meanwhile, City Mayor Alfred Romualdez shared the success of his administration for being named us one of those LGUs complying such order, to his department heads namely City Budget officer Vicente Dy, Accountant Victoria Collantes, and Treasurer Zosima “Susan” Cordaño.

Fighting for Tacloban’s Cultural Identity

Senses and Sensibilities

The passage of the ordinance making Sangyaw as the official cultural festival of Tacloban City will put to rest the cultural identity crisis that the city usually experience in the past. Every place in the country has its own cultural identity through its festival that is usually timed during its fiesta. This is why; the festival is confused as a religious activity. In the recent furor about the introduction of the resolution to make Sangyaw, Tacloban’s official festival, people who are behind the Pintados-Kasadyaan group tried to confuse the public with their arguments using the terms: religious activity; separation of state and church; freedom to exercise one’s religion and so on and so forth. Their arguments bordered on impertinence and brazen distortion of facts. They all know that what they were driving at were all false contentions and misrepresentation to confuse the public.
Sangyaw is a cultural festival during the celebration of the Sto. Niño Feast of Tacloban. The feast of the Patron Saint is a religious occasion celebrated by Taclobanons as a way of adoring the Child Jesus. There are many activities lined-up during the Month of June in honor of the Patron Saint and the Sangyaw Festival is just one of them. The festival showcases various groups who come to Tacloban to join in the festivities not to ruin the fun or to sow discord. No one is prevented from joining it. In fact, in the past, the City Tourism Council through the Honorable Councilor Cristina Romualdez and the Sangyaw Foundation have always invited openly the Pintados-Kasadyaan and other festival groups to come to Tacloban to join in the Mardi Gras. Even those from as far as Luzon and Mindanao are free to come and celebrate with Taclobanons, just as the Sangyaw group accepts invitations from other places to join in their festivals. This is what we call interplay of festivals; after all, we are all Filipinos who must learn to respect and love one another. There is no need to compete or cause trouble as what the other group are doing, fueled by the power base from the province.

But as long as other leaders and other persons will not and cannot show respect for other local government units, they will always create havoc, discord and disharmony. Take for example this situation: If Tacloban-Sangyaw will forcefully invade Palo, Tanauan, Abuyog, Manila, Makati and other places to showcase its own Sangyaw Festival and insist on doing what it wants without regard for protocol and respect, the whole thing will result to resentment and frictions. Tacloban-Sangyaw has not encroached on any of the places mentioned above. Its leaders and officials have always respected other leaders of other places. It did not go to court to invoke any restraining order just to show wanton disregard for propriety and regard. The passage of the ordinance will henceforth stop such trouble of being bypassed and vehemently disregarded.

Spokespersons of the other side keep on hammering on the wrong timing of passage of the ordinance saying that Tacloban is still reeling from the effects of flooding and the incessant rains. Why would the legislators stop from their work in law-making just because it is raining hard in the city and some areas are flooded? The work of the Sangguniang Panlungsod is to pass resolutions and ordinances in order for the executive branch to carry out its work on public service. It has done a good job in passing the resolution that declares Tacloban under the state of calamity faster than the provincial government. The early declaration has resulted in the fast rehabilitation and clearing of affected areas and distribution of relief goods. Mayor Alfred Romualdez has expediently responded to the affected areas by mobilizing the city’s calamity fund and doing the actual monitoring himself. The emotional outburst by some of our legislators was uncalled for, using rhetoric and body language that manifested immaturity and emotional frailty. They used such display to mislead people and to get misplaced sympathy.

It must be remembered that more than 60 percent of those who cast their votes to make Tacloban a highly urbanized city also supports the passage of the ordinance that will give Tacloban its own cultural identity; independence and freedom to celebrate its festival and its fiesta. More than anything else, these people would want that the municipality of Palo especially its municipal mayor would stop encroaching on Tacloban’s affairs.

Furthermore, the ordinance should have totally excluded other festivals of bad standing to join; not only ten days from its fiesta but the whole year-round. It is just right and proper that ethical standards be exercised by all. After all, what they are after is not really to pay homage to the Infant Jesus but the millions of advertisement funds they get from companies and ads. It would do well for the other group to stop using the terms “freedom to exercise one’s religion” or “autocracy” because religion and leadership style have nothing to do with motives and intentions of people behind Pintados and Sangyaw.

I just came from Zbastian kaninang madaling araw, in fairness, magagaling ang mga stand up comedian! Tapos, pumunta kami ng elements, astro, kami nalang sumurender sa gimik, the party was still on, pero d ko na kaya. gusto kong kayanin, but the body drops!
Kaya sino magsasabing hindi vibrant? No offense!:lol::lol:

Newest mall in Tacloban enjoys brisk business; 100-room hotel project to start January
By Ranulfo Docdocan
ABS CBN News – Philippines

Tacloban City -- Robinsons Place Tacloban which opened in June of this year, is enjoying a brisk business, a top mall executive, informed.

Ms. Mercedes Taleon, Group Property Manager of Robinsons Land, said that the Tacloban mall is making waves and now competes in performance with the other Robinsons Malls all over the country.

The management is happy about the performance of the Robinsons Tacloban, Ms. Taleon said. The grand opening of the mall in Tacloban was one of the most successful opening of a Robinsons Mall and the management was very happy and satisfied.

More than 90 percent of the shops are already occupied, Ms. Taleon said. The other spaces have been reserved but will start operations in January of 2010, the manager added.

The Robinson's Bank is set to open next week so that businessmen and customers can deposit and withdraw as the need arises. More coffee shops and other establishments have opened to the delight of the local consumers.

In fact, the Handyman Do It Best Home Center has recorded the highest sale, outshining the 24 other such centers in Robinsons Malls around the country.

A local fruit supplier for Robinson's Place Tacloban was reported to have grossed two million peso sales, if this has anything to do with the Nutrition Month celebration advocating healthy lifestyle, this writer wonders.

The shops at the Robinsons Mall have been observed to be enjoying the patronage of many customers not only from Tacloban City but from the other parts of the Region.

Furthermore, Ms. Taleon said that the Robinson's Hotel just beside the mall will start to be constructed in January of 2010. The hotel, which will have 100 rooms, will be built near the mall and within the company's four-hectare property.

"Part of the expansion is a hotel to be constructed next to the mall. The first few floors will also be retail outlets, and probably a bridge way to connect the two phases. It's really about time. One of the develop needs that has greatest opportunities now after the shopping mall will be a hotel," the executive said.

Local economists are optimistic that the presence of a major player in the Region will serve as an engine of growth that will trigger other big players to locate in the Region.

The opening of Robinsons in Tacloban has also generated jobs. It was estimated that Robinsons Place has cause the employment of about 3,000 locals, directly or indirectly.
