P5-B sought for major rehab of Tacloban City Airport

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Philippines — Congressional leaders in Eastern Visayas are set to lobby with President Benigno S. Aquino III for the release of P5 billion from the national government for the major rehabilitation of the Tacloban City Airport situated in San Jose District here.

Rep. Neil Benedict A. Montejo of the An Waray Party-list said they will soon meet with President Aquino to lobby for the release of funds for the total rehabilitation of the old national airport. The objective of the project is mainly to rebuild the airport to accommodate the increasing number of passengers using the airport.

Montejo said he and his fellow-solons, including Rep. Florencio Noel of the An Waray Party-list , will seek an audience with the President and to bring up with him the need for a major overall rehabilitation of said airport.

Montejo said they intend to ask for the gradual release of funds for the airport project as the facility is already congested. “We need to make it responsive to the needs of the growing traveling public,” he stressed.

Samar 1st District Rep. Mel Senen S. Sarmiento, former chairman of the Regional Development Council (RDC) of Eastern Visayas, is one with Montejo in requesting for the project as he said, “Samareños come to Tacloban City to take their flight when their flight originating from Calbayog City in Samar, or in Catarman, Northern Samar are cancelled.”

Montejo also said “we would like to see this airport completed during the term of President Aquino which could be one of his legacies in Eastern Visayas. He can release R1 billion a year until his term ends," Rep. Montejo said.

He added that while they are asking for the huge funds for the major expansion of the airport, he is personally asking for the installation of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) which will guide the pilots to land at night, or even during zero visibility or when bad weather condition occurs.

TACLOBAN CITY—“Amidst the tsunami scare, the “BAYIN” art exhibit opened successfully at the lobby of Leyte Park Hotel,” said Dulz Cuna, international artist and one of the BAYIN artists. The exhibit was mounted by the Department of Tourism and the Leyte Park Hotel in celebration of the Women’s Month. The theme of the exhibit was “Women, Heritage and Tourism.”
Leyte Vice Governor Mimiette Bagulaya, Tacloban City Councilor Cristina Romualdez and Tourism Director Karen Tiopez led in the opening of the art exhibit.

“ The opening went on smoothly amidst sailing atop a tsunami wave,” Dulz said in her signature laughter. The night before the opening, some 20 provinces of the country were on tsunami alert 2 after Japan suffered devastation when an earthquake with 8.9 magnitude hit their country, followed by a tsunami of 13 meters high at Sendai province in Japan.

“BAYIN” is a conglomeration of visual women artists from the Visayas. The group was organized during “Women’s Vanity, “ an all-woman exhibit at SM Mall in Cebu City last December 2010. BAYIN is a fusion of different women’s monicker in the Visayas like “bayi”, “baji”, “baying”, “babae”, so BAYIN was born like a happy woman.

The exhibit, which runs for 10 days, from March 12-23, 2011, have the works of Eastern Visayas artists aside from Dulz Cuna like Merlie Alunan and Danica Astilla. Artists from Western Visayas were Betsy Alterado, Palmy Pe-Tudtud, Marivel Galan, Rita Piczon.

“All the art works are all for sale. On the first day, the hotel called us, two artworks were already sold”, beamed Cuna.

The group will have an art tour in Dumaguete this coming October. (VICKY C. ARNAIZ)

^^ that's why i was saying even before pa na dapat unahon pag priority iton Drainage system ha Tacloban also the roads kay take a look of whats happening now, my family was forced to move out the house and checked in somewhere downtown instead coz abot tuhod na it baha haam balay,... i really Think Tacloban needs better drainage's coz most areas of Tacloban are swampy and Mountainous,... so no wonder kun kayano permi nabaha specially in V&G and Apitong,...

now, its actually a disaster coz people needs to rebuild many things again, as i heard from my Mom... there are many damages caused by the flood not only in our house but all over including our neighborhood... so, again we need a much better drainage system,...

i think isolated cases la it baha ha iba nga area ha tacloban, bisan pa ano kaupay it drainage system kun talaga sugad hini nga uuran talaga ma overflow it tubig..
it aton mga drainage mag upay man, it kaso la it aton river polluted hit basura sanglit it tubig dre nakakaagi..mga pasaway man ini nga aton mga igkasi nga ada naukoy along the riverbank (dre tanan )

i think the city should implement an ordinance nga kada month myda pirme clearing operation hit mga river..tagan ini hin budget hit syudad..tapos butangan hin mga CCTV cam ito ngada nga area para makikita kun hino it mga nanlalabog hin basura ngan tagan dayon it aksyon

APAC to expand this year

PALO, Leyte- The region’s only business processing outsourcing locator is set to expand further, which is expected to generate more employment opportunities for the region.

This was revealed by Susan Calero, project development officer of the Leyte Tourism Investment and Promotion Center (LTIPC), who also said their office was already informed by the management of the APAC Customer Services that it would be needing another space for its planned expansion.

“They would be expanding their operations probably within the year. This only means that their business is doing well and they have expanding clients which need for their expansion,” Calero said.

With their planned expansion, she said, the APAC would also need additional call center agents.

“It will help increase our employment,” Calero said.

The APAC has now over a thousand persons under its work force. It started its operations in Leyte in 2009 with an initial investment of P100 million.

Calero said that the planned expansion of the APAC would be located within the still vacant portion of the 6.2 hectares Leyte Academic Center in Palo town.

The APAC, the first call center company to operate in the region, rent its space from the provincial government.

Calero said that under the “build the site policy” introduced by Governor Jericho “Icot” Petilla, it would be the provincial government which will construct the needed building of the APAC for its planned expansion.

“This is to encourage our potential investors or locators to come to Leyte and do their business here,” Calero said.(JOEY A. GABIETA)

Classes in Tacloban City are still suspended.
paid mouthpieces of the critics of Mayor Romualdez are busy lambasting our chief executive kay diri daw nababatian ha mga radio interviews (when in fact the mayor was very busy in overseeing the evacuation of affected residednts and making sure that every Taclobanon is safe). Imbes na they will help in giving assistance to those affected, they are resorting to dirty tactics. Mayda gud la mga tawo na sobra ka ambisyoso na diri nakakahulat mag 2013 elections. I pity the politician who was on a drinking spree while there was a tsunami alert and who was not to be found in Tacloban City or in any part of the region during this time of crisis.

anyway, despite there are some people who are hard headed in some areas of the city, now see how clean and disciplined the people are in the downtown area...

^^ Tacloban has evolved a lot in terms of discipline. A city where pedestrians are disciplined-- crossing only on pedestrian lanes. Single motorcycle drivers always wear their helmet. Vehicles give way to the pedestrian. Seeing those sights makes me feel proud of my city. :)

The recent calamity that struck our beloved city cannot be blamed to anyone. Our drainage and sewerage system were functioning. We have to keep in mind that the amount of rainfall that is good for 6 months happened in just 1 day, so hindi nakaya ng mga drainage systems natin ang volume of water. It was a force of nature beyond anyone's expectation.

tama, wala naman problema mga drainage system natin, malakas lang talaga ang ulan..pero kung may dapat man ayusin is ang mge creek na madami basura..
kaya nga i strongly propose na sana makaroon ng quaterly maintenance sa mga creek

in a way i agree with you na mahugaw pag kit.on. But how can you say na its not part of tradition? Jeepneys are part of the Filipino culture. Tuod nga na mana ta i2 na mga jeep ha mga kano and we used it after the war. Pero it shows the character of the Filipinos. It shows how resourceful we are and how innovative we are! Plus it adds individuality to our country. No one else has those things. While you mentioned na in other Asian countries nka mini bus hra, other countries still maintain traditional forms of transportation. Like Thailand, they still have their tuktuks. It actually draws tourists. We shouldn't be ashamed of our jeeps. We should be proud of them.

Aquino may appear to be a symbol of change and hope pero some things are just hard to forget. Kasalanan ba ng mga tao sa Leyte na tga roon si Imelda?

Anyway, the thing that I dont understand is bakit kailan mag designate ng maraming international airports? Like Iloilo, (no offense sa mga illongo) I've been there and their airport is quite lovely. Pero wala namang international na flights. Among the top 10 airports on the list, NAIA and Mactan Airport are the only "True International Airports" in the country. Not to mention Clark. So the point is. Not all "international airports" on the list can sustain a steady flow of international flights.

At isa pa na hindi ko maintindihan, YUNG PERANG YAN ay galing sa Tacloban! Kaya Pnoy huwag mo ng ipag kait ang pera ng mga taga Tacloban!

Aquino may appear to be a symbol of change and hope pero some things are just hard to forget. Kasalanan ba ng mga tao sa Leyte na tga roon si Imelda?

Anyway, the thing that I dont understand is bakit kailan mag designate ng maraming international airports? Like Iloilo, (no offense sa mga illongo) I've been there and their airport is quite lovely. Pero wala namang international na flights. Among the top 10 airports on the list, NAIA and Mactan Airport are the only "True International Airports" in the country. Not to mention Clark. So the point is. Not all "international airports" on the list can sustain a steady flow of international flights.

At isa pa na hindi ko maintindihan, YUNG PERANG YAN ay galing sa Tacloban! Kaya Pnoy huwag mo ng ipag kait ang pera ng mga taga Tacloban!

Our airport may not be included in this year's priority projects of Pnoy but who knows next year or within his term he would include na the airport and might be a huge rehabilitation pa for our airport. And one thing also is with the exclusion of DZR airport from his priority projects has nothing to do with Imelda you must remember guys that Pnoy won in both provinces. in a way i agree with you na mahugaw pag kit.on. But how can you say na its not part of tradition? Jeepneys are part of the Filipino culture. Tuod nga na mana ta i2 na mga jeep ha mga kano and we used it after the war. Pero it shows the character of the Filipinos. It shows how resourceful we are and how innovative we are! Plus it adds individuality to our country. No one else has those things. While you mentioned na in other Asian countries nka mini bus hra, other countries still maintain traditional forms of transportation. Like Thailand, they still have their tuktuks. It actually draws tourists. We shouldn't be ashamed of our jeeps. We should be proud of them.

Jeepneys are not just part of our tradition but an iconic symbol of our country. If you would ask a foreigner about jeepney they would say Philippines or Manila and yes I agree with you that most of the jeepneys are not well maintained and an eyesore because of poor maintenance. How I wish that in the years to come all of these jeepneys will be replaced with e-jeepneys which is environment-friendly. One thing I noticed though here in my province is you can hardly find a jeepney on the highway but multicabs are dominating instead.

RE: busiest airports for 2010: it actually 8th (if outside MM) kay if you would look at the list in 2009, it says "outside Metro Manila" and it does not include NAIA in the list. In the year 2010, it included NAIA.

Grabe yung biyahe nga CebuPacific sa Tacloban almost half a million of passengers travel volume, it's no wonder why the Gokongwei's planned to invest the first GoHotel outside Metro Manila in the country will be here in our City. ^^ Agree,... hahai, what do you expect,... i would really Agree that we need to improve our airport into a better 1 coz our current airport really sucks,... :down: our airport is just good for low passenger traffic but Tacloban's airport is one of the country's busiest airport,... i really think we have to build a new and better 1,... kahit hindi regular yung international flights at least we are prepared for the future demands,... even now, there are lots of people from the Region traveling to different countries... all i can say is, we now deserve a bigger and a better airport,... i even dont trust the President that next year his going to give DZR a priority already or if he does, i dont think it will be a very great surprise,... well i just hope i'm wrong, but i always experience the inconvenience being at the airport,...

Guys, may-ada kamo mga lists hit mga prospect shops or food outlets na malocate dida ha RPT annex?

Sana by this time there could be Adidas and Nike stores. Also, wish ko lang magkaada na hin bangko ha solod hit RPT annex o di kaya ATM express lanes hit magkadurudilain na bangko para di na mapadowntown pagwithdraw la hin kwarta.

^^ meda man BPI and metrobank within the vicinity of RPT and Robinsons Bank ha sulod.. Im not sure kun meda new bank na ma-branch out ha RPT Annex. Pero I heard na ma-add daw hn another branch it BDO somewhere in the city..

Food outlets: Pizza Hut, Mooon Cafe and Gerry's Grill pala an pinaka-maugong.. haha

Waiting for the court decision for ownership of Balyuan- Gov. Petilla

TACLOBAN CITY – Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla said they are just waiting for the court decision with regards to the case filed by the province for the claim of ownership over the Balyuan area.

In distinguishing the real owner of the Balyuan property, Petilla said that the court had ordered the provincial government of Leyte and the city government of Tacloban to hire an independent surveyor to determine who really owns the contested area.

Based on the documents in the hands of both local government units, they seek the help of National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) to conduct said survey.

NAMRIA is an agency of the government under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) responsible for providing the public with mapmaking services and acting as the central mapping agency, depository and distribution facility of natural resources data in the form of maps, charts, texts, and statistics.

Petilla revealed that the provincial government immediately complied with the order of the court by paying 50% of the cost for surveying the location but the city government only paid the remaining cost when the court had ordered them to pay for their counterpart.

Petilla added that the result of the survey favored the provincial government based on the land title and the survey conducted.
“But the finality to which the area is to be given will still be decided by the court as they have the final words on said matter,” Petilla stressed.

In August 24, 2004 during the time of then city mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez, father of the incumbent Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed with the provincial government of Leyte for the city to use said property.

Said agreement expired in August 2009 or five years after the MOA was signed, prompting the provincial government to claim once again the ownership of said property and give notice to the city government to vacate the area.

Balyuan covers a total land area of 6,941 square meters and houses several buildings of the city government including Balyuan Convention Center, City Health Office, media center for television of the city government, among others.

Aside from various city government offices, the multi-million Balyuan Amphitheater is also located in said area.

At the moment, Petilla said the final hearing of the case had already been scheduled which after said hearing the decision of the court will be revealed.

Petilla, when asked on the provincial government’s plan for the Balyuan area, said that the area can be possibly turn into a mini-government center as there are national government agencies in the region that are looking for an area for their regional offices. (ROEL AMAZONA)

higher chances are there that the Balyu-an property will be returned back to Leyte Province Gov't....

haayyzz, if this will happen, existing plans and projects of the City Gov't. on that property will be put on hold or even cancelled...

and the Petillas especially Matin will be seen going up and down the stairs of the Amphitheater trying to catch attention from the people around her....:lol:
