Alfred: More investors coming in to the city to do business (http://leytesamardaily.net/2012/01/alfred-more-investors-coming-in-to-the-city-to-do-business/)

TACLOBAN CITY- City Mayor Alfred Romualdez said that more investors are coming in to the city to do their business, to the benefit of the city and those looking for employment.

In an interview, the city mayor said that 2012 would appear to be a “pretty good year” for Tacloban with the projected coming in of fresh and new investments.

According to him, with the coming in of new investments not only the people of the city would benefit due to expected job opportunities but even those coming outside Tacloban.

He said that he is in negotiations with some businessmen from outside Tacloban who have expressed their intention to invest in the city.

Others are already doing their businesses here in the city but are thinking of expansion, Romualdez said.

For one, he said, the management of the Robinsons is mulling for another expansion aside from the recent opening of its annex which also includes a 98-room budget hotel.

Romualdez also said that the management of the Gaisano is also planning to put up its Gaisano Market in Tacloban.

The city mayor admitted, however, that the investors he is dealing with at present are mostly engaged in trading and services and not in manufacturing which would require putting up of factories.

Asked on report that another giant shopping mall would be coming to Tacloban, the city mayor said that there is no definite on this yet.

“But certainly, Tacloban is within their radar. They are looking for a place here in Tacloban. Maybe in 2013 or 2014 but not this 2012,” he said.

The city mayor said that he is happy that local businessmen appear to be “complementing” with their rivals coming from the outside.

“I am really glad that our local (businessmen) have learned to complement and not to compete with the investors. This makes our local economy strong,” Romualdez said.

Meantime, Mayor Romualdez stressed that when it comes to employment opportunities, everybody is welcome to come to the city and find seek better opportunities.

“You cannot really expect exclusivity even if we want to. But definitely, Taclobanons will be given the priority,” the city mayor said.

Tacloban, being the regional capital, is expected to be visited and populated by people who are not originally from the city, Romualdez said.

“You have to understand that Tacloban is the regional base of Eastern Visayas,” he said.

Mayor Romualdez said that inviting investors to come to the city is one of his top priorities, reasons why he has activated the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) of the city government which serves as a data bank of persons who need work and other information needed by potential investors who wish to do business in Tacloban

I disagree. In the first place there's no such name amended in our present constitution as Metro Tacloban. It may create havoc and confusion to those people who will read this thread. Let's not mislead and be responsible with our post. Cebu, Iloilo and Bacolod to name a few of metropolitan cities in the Visayas but they are not using "Metro" thing.

Question, how did it came across in your mind with that kind of proposal? Is there any problem?

Share ko lang, hope this would clear the above issue.

This explains why revenue collection of BIR-8 turned slow-down for the year 2011. Hoping more infra projects and more investments to come with every LGU in Eastern Visayas for the year 2012.

BIR wasn't able to meet tax collection target for 2011

GOVT CENTER,PALO, Leyte --The regional office of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) was not able to meet its tax collection for 2011, citing reasons for poor collections.

"Slow-down of the economic and environmental activities highly affected the agencys tax collection," Benjamin Mari, head of the tax assistance unit, said.

He said that the low collection on value added tax (VAT) was also one of the reasons why the BIR-8 was not able to meet its collection target.

Mari said that there were little or no infrastructure projects from the local government, which may be attributed to the current administrations advocacy to rid the alleged anomalies of the previous administration.

"But BIR is looking for ways to collect the due taxes from the local businesses and, of course, from the professional citizens regarding their tax obligations. They have already been educated regarding their duties and obligations on paying their taxes on time. (The) Oplan: Kandado is temporarily put on hold since the local business establishments in the region are now compliant with their tax payments and dutifully pay them on time," Mari said.

Although compared to previous years, revenue tax collected, and regardless of the reasons why it was not successfully met, in the month of November, the tax collection rate totaled to P341,481,904.74 although the target figure was around P446,908,000.

There was an excess of 17.16%. The regions total revenue tax collected was P3,530,724,732.03 from January November 2011. The complete end year report on the revenue tax collection will be submitted and filed on January 2012. (APRIL ROSE Q. UYKIENG)

In addition to that, nagkaroon ng reshuffle of District Tax Collectors as early of 2011. As far as I've remember, there were 3 outstanding Top Performing District Tax Collectors ang nakabase dito sa Eastern Visayas recognized by the Reg'l & Nat'l office ng BIR noong 2010 ang naitapon sa iba't ibang regions sa bansa. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

:bash::bash:Soon, Tacloban is going to be a metropolitan area with Palo, Tanauan and Babatngon. Let us all patiently wait for that. Considering the city's exponential economic growth and development, hindi malabo yan. All we need to do is pray and believe. Mind over matter, if we'll think of it, it shall!:lol:

Bangin siguro nakita nra kun anu ka-grabe kadamu han tawo in the past weeks and months and we REALLY deserve a new mall :) And I think Tacloban can sustain at least 2-3 full-scale malls without "killing" or prejudicing our local traders. :)

Correct ka diyan! Robinsons Movieworld pala sinusurong na. To think wala ng cinema sa downtown. So it only goes to show that mas aggressive ngayon ang RPT mgt to make expansion. How much more pa sa mga boutiques and mga stores.

Sana ibang concept naman ang itayo ng RLC dito sa Tacloban, may pagkaSM-MOA type na may shopping mall- convention center-trade hall-bpo bldg-recreation park-condo cum hotel type na complex. For a change lang heheheh...

LGUs in EV called to support Sen. Sotto’s III bill amending local gov’t code on sales tax payment

TACLOBAN CITY – Local government units in the region have been called to support the bill of Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III amending the local government codes provision on sales tax payment allocation.
Lawyer Clarence Paul Oaminal, consultant of Sen. Sotto in the Visayas, said Senate Bill No. 42 seeks to increase allocation of revenue shares among local governments, notwithstanding the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).

“The regions should support the amendments of Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991 specifically section 15, which is the Sales Tax Payment Allocation. It mandates that the principal place of business receives a bigger percentage than that of the actual place of business,” Oaminal said.

Multi-national companies and large scale industries situated their principal place of business in the cities in the National Capital Region as it was the place of registry.

“The actual place of business or operation like factories, warehouses and distribution centers where bulk of the business takes place are located in the provinces like that of big cities,” Oaminal said.

“For example, a mining company operates in Leyte, but the sales tax payment is received in Makati where their main office is located,” Oaminal added.

Under the code, the cities and municipalities that house those industries receive a small share in the tax payment allocation.
“That is why Sen. Sotoo intends to change this set up so that instead of the principal place of business, the actual place of business receives the bigger share,” Oaminal said.

“This is fair as it is the provincial LGUs that provide safety and security, maintenance of the road, yet it receives the smaller share while the principal place of business merely houses the air-conditioned offices,” he said.

“The bill, when it becomes a law ,will surely usher economic boom in the provinces,” he said. (REYAN L. ARINTO)

New 100-bed hospital opens in Tacloban (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=760835&publicationSubCategoryId=75)

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – After three years of construction, the Tacloban Doctors Medical Center (TDMC) has finally opened along Congressman Artemio Mate Avenue to serve the health care needs of Tacloban’s more than 250,000 residents.

“It’s worth the long wait. We have acquired modern medical devices from HealthSolutions Enterprises, such as the 16 slice CT scanner, an ultrasound machine, ventilators and other laboratory equipment that will make TDMC the premier health care provider and health center in Eastern Visayas,” said TDMC president Ignacio Valeriano.

The 100-bed TDMC offers clinical and diagnostic services, cardiac care, OB surgery, neurological care, orthopedics, health care for men and women, and special services for children and families.

In addition, TDMC has lined up outreach program services for the outlying communities, including cancer screening, disease prevention seminars, and practical tips on domestic hygiene.

TDMC is the eighth hospital in Tacloban City, which also has two public hospitals, the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center and the Tacloban City Hospital.

It was designed by Manila-based architect Rino Catura and is owned and managed by Grupo Servicio Medico Inc.

para sa DOTC sa region 8 2012, di ko makuha ang haba kasi ng pdf list for the whole country kasi, i took the region 8 lang.

tama nga meron allocated na 200M for the construction of the new terminal.

f. Region VIII 325,000,000 325,000,000
------------------ ------------------
1. Tacloban Airport, Leyte 200,000,000 200,000,000

Had a chance to talk with Mayor Alfred yesterday. And when asked about the possibility of putting up an SM in the city/province, he answered that it nowhere to be seen in the near future. He added that SM Management is prioritizing the construction of another SM in Cebu which will be bigger than SM MOA and is targeted to be the biggest in Asia/World.

Mayor Alfred also talked about the plans of fixing the drainage system in the city, where canals will be as wide as that of the roads and will be located beneath the road itself, and will directly drain towards the cancabato bay. Amo daw iya priority project.

maagi la..

Amo daw iya priority project.

madayon ngani ito nga drainage project ha tacloban ..the best good ito kon amo ito ka dako kay waray gud baha ito. tacloban will serve as a model for drainage system kay amo it mahihimo nga solution ha mga baha lalo na ha manila.

I've been lurking to this site for months now. Most of the topics circle around having malls lalo na SM.

Tourist police units created in major Philippine tourist destinations (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/123059/tourist-police-units-created-in-major-philippine-tourist-destinations)

MANILA, Philippines—Additional Tourist Police Units (TPUs) have been established nationwide to ensure the safety of both foreign and domestic tourists, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo said Thursday.

Robredo said that 24 more TPUs were added to the 14 existing units established in 2010 following a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Tourism (DoT) and Philippine National Police.

The new TUPs, according to Robredo are in the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (PPO); Cagayan PPO; Cavite PPO; Laguna PPO; Puerto Princesa City Police Office (CPO); Palawan PPO; Oriental Mindoro PPO; Camarines Sur PPO; Aklan PPO; Cebu CPO; Cebu PPO; Negros Oriental PPO; Tacloban CPO; Camiguin PPO; Cagayan de Oro CPO; Davao CPO; General Santos CPO; Surigao del Norte PPO; Baguio CPO; Manila Police District; Quezon City Police District; Eastern Police District; Northern Police District; and Southern Police District.

He said that each TPU will be headed by a Police Chief Inspector-ranked official who will be tasked to “enforce laws and ordinances relative to the protection of lives, properties and environment in his area of responsibility; exercise the general power to arrest, detain, search and seize in accordance with existing laws; conduct regular patrol to ensure the safety and protection of both tourists and residents within his jurisdiction; coordinate with concerned police stations in monitoring and investigating all cases involving tourists; and take immediate appropriate action to resolve conflicts.”

Customs bureau fails to meet its target collection for 2011 (http://leytesamardaily.net/2012/01/customs-bureau-fails-to-meet-its-target-collection-for-2011/)

TACLOBAN CITY- The Bureau of Customs here in the region said that it’s target collection for 2011 of more than P470 million was not met.

The BoC-8, whose jurisdiction covers the ports of Tacloban, Isabel, both in Leyte, and Catbalogan in Samar, was only able to collect P219.03 million or about -53 percent variance last year.

Collector Avelino Alberca of the BoC-8 said that the main reason why they were not able to meet its target collection for last year was due to the poor collection at the Isabel port in Leyte which houses several big companies...

The Tacloban Port, which derives its earnings from foreign parcels and LPG dues, netted an income of P73.45 million which was higher compared to its target of P31.68 million.

P29M for Tacloban bonuses (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/113193/p29m-for-tacloban-bonuses-2)

Tacloban City — Government officials and employees of this city will celebrate the holidays richer by up to P25,000 each.
The city council on Wednesday approved a budget of P29 million for additional Christmas bonuses for officials and employees of the city, including those who do not enjoy security of tenure.
The bonuses range from P5,000 to P25,000 for several officials including the city mayor.
Vicente Dy, city budget officer, said the additional bonus would be given also in time for the third anniversary of Tacloban’s conversion into a highly urbanized city.
He said Mayor Alfred Romualdez, Vice Mayor Arvin Antoni, 10 city councilors (including the mayor’s wife, former actress Cristina Gonzales) and 695 regular employees of the city government would each receive P25,000 in additional bonuses.
At least 154 casual employees would each receive P15,000 in additional bonuses while more than 1,300 employees who are on job order status will receive P5,000 each. Job order employees are those hired for specific work for at least three months.
Dy said the P29-million budget for the additional bonuses would be taken from the city government’s savings for the current year.
Dy also said the city’s more than 1,500 barangay officials, 218 barangay health workers, 122 barangay nutrition officers and 96 so-called barangay service point officers would also receive P2,000 in bonuses each from the city government.

^^ this article was released last December. I was just wondering if those bonuses are too much? Nonetheless, as stated in the article, it was taken from the city's savings.

Three more Robinsons malls to rise by June (http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Corporate&title=Three-more-Robinsons-malls-to-rise-by-June&id=44738)

This comes as Robinsons Land recently completed renovation and expansion works on three other malls in the country: Robinsons Place Tacloban, Robinsons Place Bacolod, and Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City.
“We finished all of them in the last quarter,” Ms. Villegas said.

Robinsons Place Tacloban added 7,000 sq. m. of space to the existing 35,000-sq. m. area, while Robinsons Place Bacolod grew its current area to 54,500 sq. m. from 48,000 sq. m. The decade-old Robinsons Metro East was also refurbished last year.

To be considered as one of the fascinating tourist destination in the Philippines, Tacloban should concentrate and develop its history and integral part of World War II. It should showcase the city's important role during the return of MacArthur and its Leyte Landing.

There should be a museum of World War II's relics and its history, where tourists are educated and informed of what had occured in the city or Leyte as a whole and its important role during the recapture of the Philippines. This will bring a lot of tourists. Sa Hawaii one of the main tourist spot is the sunkin ships during the invasion of the Japanese during WWII. It's a big hit and multi billion dollar tourist destination.

Having lived in the US, this is a time where a lot of people learned in history class and the Philippines has a big part of.

Teletec usually rents from Robinsons for their BPO or call center. Rob Tacloban, wala ba silang call center? at sa Manila ang mga Robinsons meron silang free internet sa loob mall. meron din ba dito?

I agree! :okay:

Eventhough we have the Price Mansion (Official Residence of Gen. Mc Arthur during the WW2 Leyte Gulf War), Redoña Residence (Official Residence of Pres. Osmeña during Gen. Mc Arthur's visit), Hotel Alejandro (WW2 Wall Photo Exhibit in their lobbies), the Mac Arthur Park, and Hill 120 we should have a separate museum dedicated to the WW2 alone. I guess this could attract more tourist from the US, Japan, Australia and even New Zealand. Lack of patriotism in every Leyteños that's why we don't have such kind of museum and lack of interest of looking back to our past.

I will be moving back to Leyte for good and this will be my mission and I will challege and encourage the city officials to put up a Museum for WWII, we can even solicit donations and funding for such Museum from the international arena. Nowhere in the Philippines where there is such remarkable historical event that happened in the Philippines other than Leyte. In Hawaii I believe the death memorial for the soldiers that died that is sitting on a sunkin ships charges fees for entrance. I'm not sure but I know we had to spend to go there. And this could be done in a museum in tacloban to maintain the museum. I'm sure visitors would be willing to help lalo ng mga foreigners.

Sa original plan nila Teletech had signify their interest since there is a space to be allocated for them. But when the construction of THE ANNEX started, their BPO space were scrapped instead they added two new cinemas, e.i. RPT-Movieworld 4 & 5 wherein cinema 4 is a 3D-capable cinema. Maybe the demand for cinema in Tacloban draws an interest for RPT management that's why they scrapped BPO space for Teletech.

Sana nga sa susunod na expansion ng RPT meron ng BPO space and Teletech would occupy.

WiFi hotspot for free diyan sa RPT sa may Foodcourt banda. Don't know if it's still exist and if there's other establishments with WiFi for free.

the Price Mansion had already deteriorated and it doesn't look that good anymore... the mcarthur office has now been rented to a private company while the dinning hall and the receiving hall are now being rented by private groups who needs a venue for their private events. at night the entire structure is already covered in darkness and outside its walls you would even see a karatula of a religious group who use the receiving hall for their religious activities.. gone were the days of glory... the grandeur can now be seen only in the facade. but inside it's now hollow. it had already been stripped of its hallowed state..

will the taclobans and the leytenhon rise up, unite and fight to protect for their heritage? that is the question only the taclobans and the leytenhons can answer...

Yah, same fate happens to the Redoña's Residence. Too bad it's getting rude. The mere fact that the City government and the Provincial government is using these houses along the Sto. Niño Shrine and the People's Center as one of their tourism campaign as you can see in their websites. But these houses are being neglected without any financial aid for maintenance. Too bad when a tourist go for a visit, too shame for us seeing a tourist criticizing our only historical landmarks.

^^ the same thing is actually happening at santo nino shrine. been there again after 10years. and you'll see the difference. the robe of the seated image of a chinese emperor had already deteriorated and gone were the russian icons and the glass cabinets that had displays of chinese ivory and other religious work of art are now covered in an ugly frame and you can't anymore see the grandeur of the place nor appreciate the beauty of its work of art that can now be viewed only if you try to peep thru those small opening.

nakakaawa talaga ng condition ng inyong mga heritage structures. panahon na siguro para bawiin ang lahat ng yan sa pcgg at sa mga nagpabaya sa pag-aalaga ng inyong mga heritage. nawa'y magising na kayo kasi nakakahiya din na magpromote ng mga heritage structures na yan gaya nalang ng sto nino shrine na ang mahal pa ng entrance at pati paggamit ng digicam may bayad tapos pagpasok nila mararamdaman nalang nila na wala nang kaluluwa ang lugar na yan. it had already been stripped of its soul. of its art and artworks that are either being transferred and hidden in bodegas or encased in wires.

EV’s tourism admin ‘more excited’ on DOT’s newest slogan (http://leytesamardaily.net/2012/01/evs-tourism-admin-more-excited-on-dots-newest-slogan/)

TACLOBAN CITY — Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office 8 administrator Bing Lumbre expressed elation and support to the department’s newest slogan-”It’s more than fun in the Philippines “.

The slogan, which was officially launched by Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. on Friday, reportedly gained immediate attention worldwide thru the help also of social media users in the country.

Lumbre also enjoined the people in the region to support the said campaign, adding that tourism is everybody’s business.

”We’re happy that this has finally come out because this has long been awaited.”

Also Lumbre believes that the country is ready again to promote itself to the markets particularly abroad.

”The launching of the slogan is very timely also as to the tourism updates here in our region. The opening of two big new hotels—Go Hotel and Oriental Hotel—hopefully will also complement on this.”

According to Lumbre, their department is now starting to implement its Tourism Act of 2009, this to increase and improve the ‘accessibility’ of the country to domestic and foreign tourists.

Accordingly, the act will enhance the standards of transportation services for tourist use and integrate relevant government agencies to develop its one-stop shop system for the speedy issuance of franchises and accreditation for tourism transport operators, among others.

Also, they will be intensifying product standard development and human resource trainings in the region to attract more visitors and investors.

On behalf of tourism Regional Director Karen Tiopes, Lumbre also thanked other stakeholders in tourism for their respective efforts in promoting the various attractions and destinations in Eastern visayas.

For one, Lumbre gladly welcomed the presence of 8 Magazine, first glossy lifestyle and travel mag with national and international mode of circulation, for its contributions in exposing the ‘fun’, events, natural wonders and interesting places and people in the region.

”Before we only bring brochures and other promotional materials…yet now we also have a magazine helping us. This is a boost to our tourism.”

Meanwhile, 8 magazine editor Aaron J.P. Almadro shared the same positive impression on the new DOT campaign.

”It’s more than fun in the Philippines, as we know it. It’s even more ‘funnier’ here, other say. It’s in our nature. Actually, it’s more fun anywhere in the country. This is also because we are relatively happy people compared to our other Asian counterparts. It’s more fun here because ‘Kahit anong ibato sa atin kaya nating harapin’, even during times of disaster,” Almadro explained. (RONALD O. REYES)
