pet86 April 30th, 2012, 04:42 PM The museum is not really a foreign idea. In fact in my previous post I brought up that idea too. But it should be the office of the government of Leyte who should spearhead this task, and the ideal site for a museum should be Palo, right where MacArthur landed. The museum should house different aircrafts, tanks, jeeps, and other weapons during the war- both from the Japanese and Aliied forces. The government can ask for "donations" or lease them from whoever has those in their private collection.
Well, that sounds fair. Let's just pray somebody might read our suggestion. But take note it is in Tacloban where McArthur resided and there are as well plenty of ruins of World War II found in Tacloban. I saw one in Patio Victoria and heard some more scattered around Tacloban..:)

Gohotels Tacloban, Mahusay it sulod! Astonishing!
mao rong April 30th, 2012, 05:37 PM repost ko lang in toto...
Gohotels opens two branches in Tacloban, Dumaguete (http://www.tribune.net.ph/)
Robinsons Land Corp.’s arm of value hotel chains, gohotels.ph is on-track to reach its target of more than 600 rooms by mid 2012 as it has opened two new branches in the largely-untapped cities of Tacloban and Dumaguete.
The move strengthened the hotel’s presence in the Visayas region. gohotels.ph general manager Elizabeth Gregorio said the two new branches are located beside Robinsons malls and will benefit from the synergy since the mall will make it more convenient for their guests looking for dining, shopping and entertainment options. Gregorio said the two new hotels will add 200 rooms to the gohotels.ph chain and raise the total to 600 rooms in five branches.
The Dumaguete branch will have 102 guest rooms while the Tacloban branch will have 98 rooms. gohotels.ph Dumaguete is also seen to benefit from the transport terminal beside the mall which will be completed soon. Dumaguete is known as a university town with at least four universities located in the city proper, namely: Silliman, Foundation, Negros Oriental and St. Paul. As such, there is a demand for hotels in the area.
It has recently seen a surge in tourism because the lush marine life off the beaches of nearby Dauin and Apo Island which has been attracting a rising number of local and foreign scuba diving enthusiasts.
The local economy is also booming as the high level of education its residents and the presence of the university attracted business process outsourcing firms into setting up operations in the city.
Tacloban is seen to help place the city in the map of tourists who are seen to be drawn to its relatively-untapped natural attractions as well as its rich historical heritage.
It was in Tacloban where Gen. Douglas MacArthur fulfilled his famous promise to return to the Philippines and liberate it from the Japanese occupation during World War II.Gregorio said gohotels.ph will also cater to travelers and businessmen from other parts of Leyte, Samar and Cebu due to the proximity access roads and existing land, sea and air transport terminals. Aside from the new gohotels branch, RLC has recently added an annex to its Robinsons Place Tacloban Mall which has been a huge success, counting over 18 million visitors to the mall in just two years after opening its doors to the city.
gohotels.ph’s first branch is in Mandaluyong City which has 223 rooms followed by the opening early this year of its branch in Puerto Princesa.
The company is set to open its branch in Bacolod in the first half this year, bringing to five hotels and 639 rooms under the RLC banner.
The company noted that gohotels.ph has become a sought-after hotel in its category because it focuses on essential travel services which included the quality of its bed and bath facilities and does not charge guests for frills they do not need.
It also offers free Wifi to guests and gives guests the option to purchase transport and breakfast services online together with their room accommodation.
^^feeling ko mag expand pa hira.puno na it annex.an ha may bridge usa na la it bakante na stall :)

Truly, TACLOBAN CITY should stand-out for its own identity both as a Heritage City (both for Sangyaw Festivals and Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals) and a Historical City (World War 2 Events).
First, let us make this as an "awareness drive" within the internet world. If there is somebody within SSC who has the ability to creat a website dedicated for this proposed museum would be a boost and a starting point for the government and all concerned to be aware of. There should be a lot of ways to do it. Secondly, having different museums is a cost and maintenance issue and may not be viable. A site close to where it started like Palo is a very good location. All the other places like Tacloban and Dulag should be considered "satellite" or adjunct locations which can be part or starting point of a guided historic "tour" if you will, and the culmination point will be the museum itself. I've been to similar historical museums like the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola and they have lots of WW2 aircrafts there. You can google the place. It should be a similar idea, but the museum should be focused on the events prior, during, and after the war in the PHL context.

It come to across my mind that Tacloban City (and also Leyte province as well) way back 1970's has been progressive during the reigns of the Romualdezes. It became a giant sleeping City after the People Power Revolutions in 1985 when the Marcoses losses the control over the Philippines and new Presidents has been elected till the year 1999. By the year 2000 when the brother of Mrs. Imelda Romualdez-Marcos, former Alfredo "Bejo" Romualdez and now our present Mayor Alfred Romualdez became our City Mayors for our beloved City of Tacloban the City is back in the game (for being progressive and competitive City) after sleeping for more than a decade. having 98 rooms is not enough. I hope RLC is wrong with their estimation and pursue another expansion of the hotel.
They are right for saying Tacloban is a historical and heritage city so they created and estimated a 98-room hotel and that people would come and experience Tacloban. But they are wrong for underestimating the capability of Tacloban to attract people that these kind of people are not the dominant clientele of the city. People come to Tacloban primarily because of business.
I'm hopeful that in the near future Tacloban will be identified for being attractive to tourists. Today I am highly motivated to participate the best way I can in campaigning and advertising our rich history and heritage.
And I am also hopeful for a joint effort of Leyte-Tacloban. We need THRUST and TRUST.:storm:

^^ Coulnd't agree more. :okay: And I hope that other WW2 sites such as the Price Mansion and especially the Redona Residence be renovated and converted let's say to a museum as well.
We have plenty of WW2 sites and shrines to be proud of, here are a few:
1. Leyte Provincial Capitol - temporary seat of the Philippine Government durung the liberation
2. Price Mansion - Official Residence of Gen. Douglas McArthur
3. Redona Residence - Official Residence of Pres. S. Osmena
4. Palo Metropolitan Cathedral - served as an infirmary and shelter of many wounded Filipino and American soldiers
5. Madonna of Japan Peace Memorial and many others scattered all over the city and province :)

^^ Just a thought, it would really entail a lot of effort and money but then again, nothing is impossible. But on another thought, I guess the LGUs concerned should really spearhead this project and of course with our support. For the meantime, as a short-term target while looking for that perfect WW2 museum site, why not develop existing could-be museums for WW2 such as the Price Mansion. Agencies concerned can also give our local tour operators a crash course about Tacloban and Leyte's rich history especially during WW2 so that they would be able to tell our guests what really happened on a particular place or site :)

Welcome to our very own thread...
ijun May 1st, 2012, 12:27 PM ^^ Just a thought, it would really entail a lot of effort and money but then again, nothing is impossible.
^^^^
Actually we do have one already and they are patronized by domestic / foreign tourist here in our place. Check this out...

ijun May 1st, 2012, 12:45 PM What I am trying to say about the museum, we should create something new to hear to the tourist aside from the old memorial statue of Gen. Douglas Mc Arthur and his colleagues, the Price Mansion, Hill 120 etc., etc. But a new avenue that will add more excitement to tourist, a twist that will surely tourist will love most likely would come back for more once they leave Tacloban.
Just like a wax museum of well known personalities during World War 2, a pre-war and post-war photo gallery of World War 2, an WW2 artifacts exhibits/memorabilias, a miniature of famous infrastructures and well-known beautiful places in Eastern Visayas like San Juanico Bridge / Agas-Agas Bridge / the Sohoton Caves, Kalanggaman Islands, Biri Rock Formations, First mass in Limasawa Island etc. etc. Perhaps, a display of our multi-cultural festivals in Leyte (from Sangyaw Festivals, Pintados Festivals, Buyugan Festivals, Lingganay Festivals, etc.) and in the whole region 8 as well (e.i. Manaragat Festival, Banig Festival, Sarakiki Festival, etc.)
With these, people might have to think twice that not only in Tacloban City they will go but we have a lot to offer here in Eastern Visayas if they will going to explore for more. :okay:

^^ agree :okay: It would take a lot of doing but I'm pretty sure we will get there. What I am also trying to say is that for the meantime, our LGUs and other concerned agencies should improve existing WW2 structures while realizing those vision of "something new", I'm sure we are all aware of the sorry state of some of those structures. I think in erecting or creating new structures, we should not also forget to develop and refurbish existing historical structures :D

Snorkeling GuideWorkshop conducted in Limasawa (http://leytesamardaily.net/2012/05/snorkeling-guideworkshop-conducted-in-limasawa/)
MACROHON, Southern Leyte – “I am so impressed with the municipality of Limasawa especially the warmth of its people and the cleanliness of the surroundings. They are not only rich historically being the site of the First Mass in the Asia and the country, they also have one of the amazing coral reefs in the country, ma pa wow ka sa ganda,” said Louie Mencias, Program Director and Author of Buhay-Dagat of the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD).
Mencias and other PCSSD divers are first-time visitors of Limasawa. They are conducting a “Snorkeling Guide Workshop” to 40 participants comprising 22 fisherfolks, some council members of the local government unit, biology teachers, among others. Snorkeling Guide is part of the “Buhay-Dagat” Program of the PCSSD, which is an attached agency of the Department of Tourism (DOT). Buhay-Dagat helped to establish community based-tourism.

“I have only good words for Eastern Visayas. You have the rich history, the seas, forests, rare birds and biggest caves here. Maximize these to attract more tourists. We are thankful to the warm reception of the people of Limasawa especially Mayor Melchor P. Petracorta. Also to Tourism-8 Director Karina Rosa S. Tiopes for the support. She really encouraged us to choose Limasawa for the Buhay-Dagat Program. Our next stop is Daram and Almagro in Samar also Guiuan, Eastern Samar,” Mencias said as we end the interview.

ijun May 1st, 2012, 07:22 PM Tacloban employment fair offers nearly 5,000 positions (http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Economy&title=Tacloban-employment-fair-offers-nearly-5,000-positions&id=50955)
TACLOBAN CITY -- A labor official here was hopeful that the holding of a job fair yesterday would help ease underemployment in the region.
Exequiel R. Sarcauga, regional director of the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE), said at least 4,800 jobs were offered during the job fair yesterday in observance of Labor Day.
He noted that although employment rate in the region is high at 94.8%, underemployment has worsened to about 24% this year from 21% a year ago.
"Even if a big number of people have jobs, many are still poor because their income is not sufficient," he said.
"Those who are employed are getting less than what they are supposed to get; that’s why many are still within the poverty threshold," he added.
The high underemployment rate could also be traced to the region’s dependence on the agriculture, forestry, and fishery sector, which is seasonal.
Of the 38 participating recruiters during the jobs fair yesterday, 26 were local employers while 12 offered overseas jobs.
The fair, which was held at the Tacloban City Convention Center, was one of the highlights of the 110th Labor Day Celebration to give the unemployed, displaced workers, and the new graduates opportunities to find employment.
Among positions offered were those for customer service representatives, sales representatives, health consultants, accounting staff, service crew, cashiers, sales agents, warehousemen, instructors, sales associates, and drivers.
Other activities yesterday were a fun run, product exhibit of DoLE-assisted small and medium enterprises, and bloodletting.
At the same time, some 7,939 students will be hired this summer by various government agencies, private firms and local governments under the Special Program for Employment of Students, Mr. Sarcauga said. -- SQM

I remember it was an abandoned market at the back, and formerly used by Philtranco at the front. The rest was just a huge space for parking.
Speaking of development, I just wonder if the city government has any plans to accommodate the rapid growth of commercial spaces in the area. Problem number one is the parking space requirement for these establishments. This is typical of cities in the PHL, but Tacloban should set an example that they are not going down that road. The Building Code specifically requires commercial buildings to have parking spaces, and small establishments such as rentable retail or office spaces are not exempted from that requirement.
The other thing is whether the city has a backup master plan for future development. I know there is a city architect and city planning and development, but they should start planning things NOW and not wait for an urban sprawl to happen and traffic becomes worst.

TACLOBAN CITY - City Tourism Council Chair-Councilor Cristina G. Romualdez disclosed that before the City Fiesta, they will be launching the City’s Official Tourism Slogan. Councilor Romualdez said they are still deliberating on it in the Council.
The Councilor also said that they have received a lot of suggestion as to what would be the best slogan for Tacloban since their office passed a resolution in the City Council encouraging the education sector and the people in the Barangays to submit suggestions for possible slogan for the City. Some ideas include, City of Lights, City by the Bay and Gateway to Eastern Visayas.
Meanwhile, Councilor Romualdez said, the parade of lights on June 29 Sangyaw Festival parade is just one of the highlights of this year’s celebration which will showcase festival floats with various lights and concepts with entries from different schools and Barangays in the City and other contingents of municipalities and provinces in the Region

FYI,
City of Lights is La Carlota City of Negros Occidental known for their Bailes de Luces Festival.
City by the Bay is old slogan for the City of Manila.
Gateway to Eastern Visayas, sabi mo pa nga, gas-gas na ito. Too lousy for new tourism campaign.
We should help our City to find its true identity by establishing well-impact slogan. I guess this is the right time for us to contribute one another (as what we discussed in the past few days) and help improve our City's tourism campaign. Let's help one another to draw a true identity for Tacloban City and be known to everyone. Just give your proposed slogan and explain briefly then we will consolidate. Okay ba kamo hini?:okay:

For all its problems, the Philippines does have its share of dedicated fans who don't need upbeat sloganeering to convince them that the Philippines is home to some of the planet's great tourist sites and adventures. Traveler favorites range from the gorgeous beaches of Boracay and UNESCO World Heritage Site rice terraces of Banaue, to world-class diving in Palawan and perhaps the globe's most well-preserved World War II historic site on Corregidor, as well as others in Leyte and around the country.

ijun May 3rd, 2012, 11:15 AM Excerpt from the article, Philippines tourism, a tough sell?
"Awareness" is the problem, say officials
Aside from airport concerns, however, Jimenez mostly sees a more benign problem at the root of Philippine tourism's sluggish performance, one demanding a seemingly simple solution.
In February, Jimenez told reporters, The biggest reason for our low numbers [of tourist arrivals] is not our infrastructure, crime, negative reports in the media or even the cost of flying into the Philippines.
The problem, he said, is ignorance.
They just havent heard of the Philippines, Jimenez said of international travelers.
According to Jimenez, nearly 4 million foreign passport holders visited the Philippines in 2011. Earlier this year, he announced the ambitious goal of boosting that number to 10 million by 2016.
"Raising awareness" is at the heart of his plan.
"Its plain and simple the lack of awareness about the Philippines is the major contributing factor as to why tourists from [foreign] countries have not visited our shores," Jimenez reiterated to CNNGo.
If nothing else, Jimenez has clearly gotten virtually everyone in his department onboard with his message ... and with staying on message.
Asked to identify the main problems associated with attracting foreign visitors, David Guerrero, chairman and chief creative officer of BBDO Guerrero | Proximity Philippines, says, "Above all: awareness."
Guerrero is the man charged with overseeing the creation and promotion of the Philippine brand. It was his company that won the bid to create the new tourism "Fun" slogan.
"(Awareness) is surprisingly low for the worlds 13th-largest country by population," Guerrero says. "There are many reasons for this. But the best response is to turn this into a positive and position the country as something wonderful waiting to be discovered."
"In many markets, the lack of awareness on the Philippines as a tourist destination is our biggest obstacle in attracting a bigger volume of visitors to the Philippines," echoes Rene R. de los Santos, Philippine Department of Tourism attaché/director for Northwestern USA and Western Canada. San Francisco-based de los Santos has been with the Department of Tourism for 30 years. The United States is the Philippines second-largest tourist market by nationality, just behind South Korea.
"One key challenge confronting Philippine tourism is the problem of perception around the globe," Jimenez says. "More tellingly, its also because of the worlds lack of awareness about the Philippines. We hope to change all of that through our 'Its More Fun in the Philippines' campaign that will show to the world that the Philippines is not just a place to see, but a place to be."

I guess LGUs such as the City gov't of Tacloban should be aware on this. AWARENESS is the key to gain more tourist. And we already have one, it just needs to be enhanced/widespread. :okay:

By Aurora J. Casimpan
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, May 1 (PIA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment in Eastern Visayas has accomplished the feat of zero labor strike in the region for an unprecedented nine years.
This was announced by the labor department days before the Labor Day.
DOLE-8 regional director Exequil Sacauga also said the labor department had commended the management of Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. Tacloban Plant and its two labor unions for its peaceful working environment in the region.
Sarcauga made the commendation during the signing of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the soft drinks company and the two labor unions of the same company. Present during the CBA signing were the top management of the soft drinks company and the union officials aside from those of the labor department headed by Sarcauga.
The labor regional honcho praised the parties for attaining a peaceful working environment as he stressed the importance of upholding the zero strike in the region through parties which work together for the welfare, interest and development for both parties.
The spirit of good attitude towards work should be well within the minds of all to avoid conflict, Sarcauga encouraged. (OPT/PIA-8)

MANILA, Philippines - Giant information technology (IT) firm IBM Philippines, Inc. is keen on establishing a partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) in putting up research and development (R & D) centers in strategic locations nationwide.
In an interview with DoST Secretary Mario Montejo during the inauguration of the state-of-the-art Doppler radar in Bato, Catanduanes, he said the IBM has chosen to expand its business here in the country and further tap the Filipinos’ technological expertise.
“It’s a very clear signal that technology companies, wherein the biggest of them all is IBM, really look at the Philippines as a place to go for R & D activities,” Montejo said.
He noted that IBM is looking at the Philippines “as a very conducive place to invest for R & D” amid the current problems the country is facing.
“Gusto talaga nila, to triple the size of IBM dito in three or four years lang (They want to triple the size of IBM here within the span of three to four years),” he said.
Montejo also said IBM is confident of the capability of Filipino talents. He said the R & D centers will be put up in various parts of the country.
“Not just in (Metro) Manila, we’re talking about Davao, Cebu, Iloilo, Tacloban in support also of inclusive growth,” Montejo said.

marc_86 May 5th, 2012, 05:10 AM I agree, kinahanglan gud hin LGU support para kumanhi it mga taga BPO companies. I hope they will have to do it double time before maunahan tayo ng ibang developing cities. I hope when SM opens, more business establishments and companies will follow.
^^ I think those IT parks are not YET the priority of the local government but I heard there is already a proposed council within the city govt that will tackle/cover those IT parks. I hope it will be in the pipelines soon. Just a thought, if ever ma-realize na ito na mga IT parks, I think it is safe to expect and assume that our city's growth and income will rapidly increase, waray pa ngani kita hito yana pero look at where we are now, what more kun mayda na :D
pet86 May 5th, 2012, 07:30 AM Since customer service demand is very high and Tacloban is producing very qualified IT-BPO manpower from the following prestigious tertiary schools:
1. University of the Philippines
2. Leyte Normal University
3. Eastern Visayas State University
4. Remedios Trinidad Romualdez Medical Foundation
5. St. Scholastica's College of Health Sciences
6. HIC

9. ABE
10. ADFC
there still a lot more, BPOs would highly succeed in Tacloban. All we lack is from private partnership cring pa ni @urban. It's nothing new to us being underestimated by big investors but one mistake they have is they never give a try. It ira ginhuhulat ada na magdudrungan hira ngadi. Look at RLC, they tried and succeed. ^^ I think, IMO underestimated is not the proper term, being cautious would be a more appropriate term (i guess). And it is not only in Tacloban, anywhre in the Philippines and in the world, investors, big investors specifically, are very cautious especially if the industry or field they are into is new in a certain locality. :D

marc_86 May 7th, 2012, 04:55 AM ^^ Just a thought, it would really entail a lot of effort and money but then again, nothing is impossible.

3 week tour guiding training to start today (http://leytesamardaily.net/2012/05/3-week-tour-guiding-training-to-start-today/)
TACLOBAN CITY – A three-week intensive tour guiding training will kick off today in a bid to create a pool of government-accredited professional service providers here in the region.
Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes said that the training aims to create a professional pool of tour guides within the region.

DOT to create a professional pool of tour guides in Eastern Visayas (http://leytesamardaily.net/2012/05/dot-to-create-a-professional-pool-of-tour-guides-in-eastern-visayas/)
TACLOBAN CITY — A regional tour guide training is now going on in Eastern Visayas, aiming to launch a competent pool of tour guides for both local and foreign visitors here.
In an interview with Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional office 8 director Karen Tiopes, it was learned this program is another first in the region.
According to Tiopes, the pre-screened participants will undergo an intensive training leading to their accreditation as regional tour guides. Slots however are limited to 30 participants only.
Also they will have to pass in the written, oral exam and actual conduct of a tour.
The 21-day intensive training started on May 7 and will end on June 1, 2012 here in the city.
DOT said those who will pass in the training will have their names “endorsed” to all tour operators.
Also they will be included in the pool of tour guides online via DOT official website for immediate contact.
Salary or compensation package of those who will be called as the region’s official tour guides will also depend on their services to their clienteles, like on how successful they are in conducting the tour or arranging the visitors’ needs for transportation, lodging, and accommodation, among other needs.
Those who will pass the training are expected to assist the tourists in their itinerary of travel and other tour needs anywhere in the region. (RONALD O. REYES)

mao rong May 9th, 2012, 02:36 AM DOTC says no new flights, as it bares plans to ease NAIA congestion (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/business/05/08/12/dotc-says-no-new-flights-it-seeks-ease-naia-congestion)
More night flights
The DOTC, in coordination with airlines, laid out plans to address air traffic congestion with the hope of reducing flight delays at the NAIA.
First, the NAIA will be designated as a captain's runway only, which means only a captain should have full control of an aircraft during takeoffs and landings. The DOTC believes it may take longer for a less experienced pilot to take-off or land a plane.
The DOTC is also planning to increase night flights by transferring commercial flights to and from night-rated airports. Aside from Manila, airports that have night landing capabilities are Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Kalibo, Tacloban, Puerto Princesa, Zamboanga, General Santos and Laoag.

I think diri ito hira Parish church, mga chapels/chaplettes lang ito hira nga guindadayo la hit mga parish priests or mga newly ordained priests nga kabulig hit parish priest (forgot the exact name) para magcelebrate hin eucharest mass hito nga mga chapels/chaplettes tongod hin kadako it sinasakop it usa ka parish church. marc_86 May 9th, 2012, 01:30 PM ^^ I'm not sure with St. Therese in DWU if it is indeed a parish, last that I know of is that it is a chapel under the jurisdiction of Sto. Nino Parish. But what I am 100% certain is that the first 3 churches I mentioned are parishes already. The Miraculous Medical Church in Marasbaras as I have posted is a quasi-parish :D

rjpfl May 10th, 2012, 04:19 AM forumers, i had a conversation with my friend who works for SM yesterday afternoon. i called her up asking for updates regarding the news that SM will be opening there store here in 2014.
as of yesterday, she didnt confirm that there will be an SM MALL here. she even confirmed it from her officemates regarding the news. no laid plans yet regarding the mall. she knows if a mall will be built because their department is in.charge of the department stores inside the SM MALL. they lay plans for the department stores for all the SM MALLS.
she even confirmed that there is no concrete plans yet for SM DAGUPAN. they might scrap off the idea of building one.
the only thing that she confirmed to me yesterday that SM will be building here is SM SAVEMORE.
look guys, i am not posting this to be a kontrabida to the happiness of all taclobanons and leytenos. i know, all of us (including me and my friend who works for sm), are excited to have an SM MALL here. but SM management has qualifications to a city or town which should be present before they will build a mall. thats according to my friend.
hoping really that SM management will consider leyte, tacloban to have a mall here, soooooooner!

Interviewee: Mr Jorge T. Mendiola - President, SM Department Stores
"How do you plan to stay ahead of competition?"
We intend to gain market share by improved customer reach through store openings in city neighborhoods and fast growing provincial cities, addressing the continued greater demand for convenience and accessibility by our customers. SM Department Stores will open in tandem with SM Malls.
We have already lined up our new store openings in the next three years. There will be five in 2012, Olongapo, General Santos, San Fernando, Consolacion, and Lanang in Davao; three in 2013, namely Aura, Cebu Seaside City, and BF Sucat; and five in 2014, which are in San Mateo, Dagupan, Tacloban, Tagbilaran, and Caloocan.

ijun May 10th, 2012, 07:57 AM DOTC starts bidding for P500-M airport security project (http://www.pia.gov.ph/news/index.php?article=261336620542)
By Jerome Carlo R. Paunan
May 10 (PIA) -- The Department of Transportation and Communication will open up bidding in May for the P500-million airport x-ray screening and security equipment project, a statement said on the DOTC website.
According to Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas, the project aims to improve security in different airports in the country with commercial flights by installing, upgrading and properly layering security screening of passengers.
“We would immediately be putting up notices for bidding in the newspapers for this project because we want all airline passengers in the country to have a safe and convenient flight," Roxas said in Filipino.
He explained that as of now, there are 45 airports with scheduled commercial flights. Of these airports, only 21 have adequate airport screening. To standardize the security screening in all of these 45 airports, the DOTC is procuring screening equipment that will be installed in 31 airports.
“These x-rays will be installed in places where there are no screening or where even if there is equipment but because of the volume of passengers, they need additional equipment,” Roxas said.
“We will make them all have two layers of screening just like what we have in NAIA,” he added.
Items for procurement include 21 sets of Initial Security Checkpoint screening equipment and 25 sets of Final Security Checkpoint screening equipment.
The airports to be installed the 21 ISCPs are Puerto Princesa, Kalibo, Tagbilaran, Davao, Laoag, Iloilo, Tacloban, Cotabato, Dipolog, Cagayan de Oro, Marinduque, Busuanga, Masbate, Calbayog, Catarman, Jolo, Basco, Sanga-sanga, Siargao, Cauayan and Ozamis.
The 25 FSCPs are Puerto Princesa, Kalibo, Tagbilaran, Davao, 2 in Laoag, Gen. Santos, Zamboanga, San Jose, Roxas, Tacloban, Pagadian, Dipolog, Cagayan de Oro, Marinduque, Busuanga, Masbate, Calbayog, Catarman, Jolo, Basco, Sanga-sanga, Siargao, Cauayan, and Ozamis.
DOTC will also procure 9 units of x-ray inspection systems for cargo screening.
These cargo x-rays will be installed in Puerto Princesa, Kalibo, Gen. Santos, Zamboanga, Iloilo, Roxas, Cotabato, Cagayan de Oro and Clark.
The DOTC will also buy 46 units of walk through metal detectors, 92 units of handheld metal detectors, 59 sets of CCTV IP surveillance system, 55 units of UPS system, 55 sets of AVR system and 55 sets of ergonomic chair for the x-ray operator.
This project is set for completion by the end of the year. (DOTC/RJB/JCP-PIA NCR)

MANILA, Philippines — One visit and you will fall in love with this capital city of the historic province of Leyte. Tacloban, the largest city and regional center of Eastern Visayas, is the center of commerce, tourism, education, culture and government in the region.
“You can go island hopping in the white sand islands especially in Southern Leyte. There is Calanggaman Island, Canigao Island in Matalom and the Quatro Islas in Inopacan, Leyte. You can try the zipline in Agas Agas. You can visit San Juanico Bridge, the longest bridge in Asia. You can also check out the bars and restaurants in Tacloban City,” says actress-turned-public servant Cristina Gonzalez-Romualdez, a two-term councilor of the city.
Sparkling jet-black sandy beaches, a warm climate and even warmer people – these are the pride of Tacloban as stated in its official website. Some of the country’s most relaxing and beautiful beaches are here. The historical Red Beach is where General Douglas MacArthur made his famous return in 1944. It offers water activities like windsurfing. The Blue Beach in Dulag, where the Yellow, Orange and Violet beaches also are, have pure sands and pristine waters that have made them major tourist attractions. They were named as such by the
Allied Forces to mark the spots where they could make their landing. The most well-known of the color-coded beaches is the White Beach with its numerous resorts and hotels, facilities and beach houses.
The beaches at Digyo, Amihan Woodlands and Apid are also clean, well-preserved and beautiful. Digyo is one of the best diving/beach sites in Tacloban and Leyte, while Amihan Woodlands is the nature lover’s paradise with its coconut trees, acacia, mangroves and amazing coastline. Apid is an ideal swimming place as it is usually not crowded and a little quieter than the more popular beaches.
There is so much more to see and do in Tacloban. Must-sees include the San Juanico Bridge, the longest and most beautiful bridge in the Philippines that spans 2.16 kilometers and connects the islands of
Leyte and Samar; Calvary Hill, overlooking the city and San Juanico Strait where larger-than-life statues depict Jesus Christ’s sufferings; a life-size statue of the world’s first Boy Scout Monument in human form; and the Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum which was one of the 29 presidential rest houses that the late President Ferdinand Marcos built. It has paintings of the 14 Stations of the Cross by Filipino artists, wooden bass-relief of the legend of Malakas at Maganda, guestrooms, an image of the Holy Child, a collection of original Fernando Amorsolo paintings, a big ballroom and priceless collectors’ items.
For a bit of history, visit the Leyte Landing Memorial in Red Beach; the Monument of the Filipino soldier erected as a tribute to the Filipino World War II soldiers and veterans; Palo town, the seat of
Catholicism of Leyte where the offices of the ecclesiastical government of the Archdiocese of Palo, the archbishop’s residence, the secondary, tertiary and theology seminaries of the archdiocese and the Palo Metropolitan cathedral are located.
Never forget to drop by the Philippine-Japan Commemorative Peace Park, the Price Mansion, the beautiful Leyte Provincial Capitol Bldg. and the People’s Center and Library. Also include the hills of Buga-Buga,
a monument to Japanese sacrifices in WW2; Hill 120, where the first American flag was raised by the Liberation Forces of the U.S. Army; and Hill 522, the entrance to the first liberated town of Palo in 1944. The Tacloban City Convention Center is a new edifice and the venue for basketball tournaments and other activities.
“There is an indoor artificial rock climbing facility located within the city center. We also have tennis, golf, billiards, mountains biking, rock climbing, mountaineering, kayaking, disco, karaoke and cockfighting to name a few. The place is also for windsurfing and jet skiing with the abundance of water surrounding the city. For scuba diving enthusiasts, dive sites are just a few minutes drive away across the San Juanico Bridge to the mysterious and beautiful island of Samar. Spelunkers will find the Sohoton Caves in nearby Basey, Samar both a challenge and an adventure,” shares Kring-Kring, wife of City Mayor Alfred Romualdez.
Delight in Tacloban’s native delicacies binagol and choco moron, also Kring-Kring’s favorites. “Binagol’s main ingredient is talyan, a family of taro, mixed with butter and sugar. Choco moron is made of glutinous rice, ordinary rice, coconut milk, brown sugar and melted butter and cocoa,” she says. Tacloban is also known for fresh seafood.
Having fallen in love with the city, the Romualdez family has brought Cristina’s Patio Victoria here. Patio Victoria, the famous wedding venue with an old world charm in the walled city of Intramuros, now has another garden at Baluarte, San Jose, Tacloban City, five minutes away from the airport.
“It’s a historical place by the beach with a relaxing ambiance,” beams Cristina. The beach was a baluarte or a fort during the Spanish Era and has also been the Dio Island Convention Center during the Marcos period.
Like its main branch in Intramuros, Patio Victoria Tacloban has five venues to hold weddings, debuts, seminars and conferences: the Grand Ballroom, the poolside, the small function room, the garden and the beach. It has an ala carte restaurant that features seafood and Filipino delicacies, a beach volleyball court, an adult swimming pool and a children’s pool.
“During the weekends, the restaurant features local SUTUKIL (SUgba-TUla-KILawin) dishes at very affordable prices. Also, the restaurant is now serving breakfast for those who have early flights or for those who have just arrived and want to relax by the beach before they get going for their day schedule,” continues Cristina.
The beautiful beaches, delicious delicacies and historical landmarks truly make traveling to Tacloban well worth it.

This figure is 13.6 higher than the count in 2010 of 3,610,355 persons, director Raul F. Dones of the National Statistics Office Region 8 said.
Dones said that the census counts up to the barangay level were made official with the signing by President Benigno S. Aquino III of Proclamation No. 362 on March 30, 2012.
Eastern Visayas’ population growth rate posted at 1.28 percent annually from 2000 to 2010, which means that about a person is added annually from 2000 to 2010 for every 100 persons in the population, Dones explained.
In the region, Leyte province remains to have the highest population with 1,567,984 as of May 2010. This excludes the population of Tacloban City which is pegged at 221,174.
Samar has now a total population of 733,377; Northern Samar has 589,013; Eastern Samar has 428,877; Southern Leyte has 399,137; and Biliran has a population of 161,760.
Meanwhile, the Philippine population as of May 1, 2010 is 92,337,852, which is higher by 15.83 million compared to the 2000 population of 76.51 million.
Eastern Visayas is the seventh smallest region in terms of population and accounts for 4.4 percent of the country’s total population.
Across regions, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) registered the smallest count at 1.6 million while Region 4A (Calabarzon) exhibited the biggest population at 12.6 million.
Enumerated in the census were those persons who were alive as of 12:01 a.m. of May 1, 2010 and who were Filipino nationals permanently residing in the Philippines; Filipino nationals who, as of May 1, 2010, were temporarily at Philippine sea, or were temporarily on vacation, business/pleasure trip or studying/training abroad and were expected to be back within a year from the date of departure; Filipino overseas workers, including those on board oceangoing vessels, who were away as of May 1, 2010 but were expected to be back within five years; Philippine government officials, both military and civilian, including Philippine diplomatic personnel and their families, assigned abroad; and Civilian citizens of foreign countries who have their usual residence in the Philippines, or foreign visitors who has stayed or are expected to stay for at least a year from the date of their arrival in the Philippines.
