even 5-6 years would be a blessing. the vast majority of these "projects" and "announcements" and "foundation stones" are quickly forgotten about and any enquiries regarding their "progress" is met with feigned surprise as if no such project was ever announced LOL.

Interesting, Don't you think the selling prices will be somewhat inflated for this project? it is one of the first major development projects to hit Baghdad after all..

I also remember you mentioning on a previous thread that you believe that real estate prices in Baghdad are artificially inflated (and are not based on market economics), do you still think this will hold with this one?

tigris is a fair distance away. Close by are the railway tracks, locomotive facilities of shalchia and the slums.

The "large mosque" is some columns of a mosque saddam started building on the site of muthanna airport in 2000. Now it seems that the Iraqi government want to make it into a new parliament... so its stopped the residential project in its tracks (at least temporarily, we hope).

baghdad already has a parliament, if its too small and outdated just refurbish one of saddams many palaces and turn it into a parliament house, jeez! housing + attractions for citzens is much more important...plus there are heaps of other locations they can build in...how are 5 pillars going to save them time and money?

For anyone that knows Iraq, it would be obvious to know that the land that is allocated to the construction of a Mosque immediately becomes the property of the "waqf" (either sunni or shia) or "church" (syriac, catholic, armenian etc..) and thus it becomes "sacred" land that can not be used for anything else (and certainly nothing as "immoral" as a mall!).

GOOD LUCK!!

Now the question about the government wanting to use part of the muthanna airbase to build a new parliament is strange. There are in fact THREE, yes 3 "parliaments" in baghdad.

here are their locations.

this is the recently renovated and reopened one.

this is the "conference centre" which was used between 2005-2009 as parliament
http://wikimapia.org/#lat=33.3137279&lon=44.390527&z=18&l=0&m=b

and here's the old parliament from the saddam days, which has also been renovated...
http://wikimapia.org/#lat=33.3198962&lon=44.4036484&z=18&l=0&m=b

all of these are within 1km of each other. and they want a FOURTH parliament?????

^^ i thought the conference center will not be used as a parliament anymore?

but weird that they have 3 possible buildings, yet they choose to build yet another one LOL..

So it's true, Iraqis LOVE to exaggerate. even with the number of parliaments

yes, they stopped using the conference centre. and moved to the one between garage alawi and zawra'a park. Then they finished renovating the old parliament on the river (behind the planning ministry), so they have another possible parliament there...

and since they never meet anyway "opposition" parties abstain from leaving Amman, governing parties are always with their families in their "other countries", so why on earth are they so worked up about more parliaments?

Maybe this is just sport to agitate the people even more.

well. the company do have a campsite there now as my cousin told me. but no construction can commence until the legal wrangles over the land are finished.

You have to remember that this is one of the last pieces of prime real estate in central baghdad which is virgin land for development... so no politician today wants to sign off on it, to be then blamed in the future for "giving away" expensive government land to a private developer.

^^ I personally don't think this would be the case..

imagine the huge embarrassment that it will cause for maliki , he did lay the foundation stone himself after all.. scrapping a highly publicized residential project for a government office , especially during this time , when he is promising for change, seems like a very armature political move to me, So I don't think what you're implying will happen.. lets wait and see

some rumour coming out of Iraq.... (unverified) that Namir Al Akabi's company ALMCO and his other companies have been raided by the Police today... it seems that this could be the final nail in the coffin of this company (and project).

well. the company offices were raided, but some of their projects are continuing work as normal. We don't know yet what will happen to ALMCO, perhaps its a small issue that will be "resolved", or maybe not? Not clear yet.

With regards to the Baghdad Gates project, it apparently is still officially "on" but nothing is clear whether it will still be built on the same site or be relocated somewhere else?

Also another point in the "negotiation" is to build the Baghdad gate project in the Muthanna airport in exchange for making the apartments available for the parliamentarians, their families and entourage of "employees"...

you make of that what you will!

I thought the Iraq Gate project was the REPLACEMENT for this project? As in they just changed the name and the design....

So why are we keeping this? Of course change to NEVER BUILT. (Even though I'd prefer just deleting the threads; but thats not how it works here I guess)

March 10th, 2013, 01:08 AM
^^ actually no... if it is indeed the same project.. then it should be merged with the other thread .. and not get set to NEVER BUILT because in that case, it's just a design proposal that wasn't selected at the end..

i just don't know if that is indeed the case.. i thought this one is another project?
