With quite a number of excellent threads already devoted to Vancouver and environs why add another - but I guess I could not resist. Taken over the last year and hopefully some of them are interesting - I am trying to improve on composing a shot with limited experience with a mid level digital camera. Sure takes a lot to get picture you hope is unique. If successful I will post some panoramic images.

The lower mainland beyond Vancouver covers quite an area and I hope to try and capture some decent images through the next few months. I find riding a bicycle allows one to see much more. Looking at photographs many of you have taken from around the world helps me to appreciate living here and trying to allow others who have not had the opportunity to see all the different areas, just as I have seen places I will never be able to visit personally. Just hope I can learn more tricks of the trade using the camera. The life of an armchair traveler!

The Central Valley Green Way -as Vancouver has named the main pedestrian/cycling route that makes it's way from New Westminster right down to Stanley Park via False Creek. It follows the elevated rapid transit line for a good part of the distance. Not perfect but it does manage to separate most of the vehicle traffic.

Overpass for cyclists in North Burnaby.

Wow, I have not been to Vancouver in a couple of years, but it has grown quite a bit (especially the amount of residential towers downtown)! It's one of the best cities I've ever been to and offers everything. Whistler is also quite nice.

The lower mainland itself is growing rapidly - one of the reasons for the expansion of the freeway, the Golden Ears bridge and the push for projects like the Gateway. I wish it would slow down personally - some areas are losing their charm.

Sunday, May 16

Decided to ride from North Burnaby, where I live, over a hill or two into New Westminster. I managed to take in a good part of the area so hopefully others will enjoy the view, as it were. I will be adding more images as I go.

Highway #1 ( Trans Canada ) from the Caribou Rd. overpass in North Burnaby.
Looking East.
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/6133/scene13.jpg

Caribou Road - nothing in a car, but lot's of fun on a bike. It's worse than it looks.

After a good little climb, the view from the neighborhood I passed through. North Burnaby looking North East

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1331/scene14.jpg

Still in Burnaby, but New Westminster is just down the road, will be approaching an older area called Sapperton. It's also thankfully downhill from here. Typical looking street in this area, actually on top of a hill.
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/7683/scene15.jpg

A short distance down from the above picture leads to this street. The one on the left on the other side is the route I took. The rise in the far distance above it is Surrey - on the other side of the Fraser River.

View of the North side of New Westminster -the dense wooded mound in the center is Queen's Park.
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/7096/scene17.jpg

After a bit of downhill fun I ended up in this area. Columbia St. is less than 1 km. away.

View of the New Westminster cemetery, overlooking the Fraser River. It is divided into two sections, the other part is behind. Actor Raymond Burr and his family are buried here.
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3180/scene16.jpg

This street is next to the cemetery. Down the steep hill is Columbia St. I went down another street off to the right, out of view. In the distance is the Port Mann bridge which connects outlying areas to Vancouver via the No.1 highway, or Trans Canada.

Saturday, May 22.

Another day riding West from Burnaby, where I live, through some Vancouver neighborhoods on streets used as designated bicycle routes, mostly W10th, out to U.B.C. (University of British Columbia) where there are some pretty good beaches. It was a pleasant 14-15C, just a bit cool but nice if you do not want to sweat!

It has been Bike Week here in Vancouver so I rode down to were the main event was being held, and also checked out the former Olympic Village, were the various buildings are now selling suites for permanent residency.
