indistad June 10th, 2004, 05:48 PM It looks kinda nice. It doesn't seem to be dirty and crowded. And I could't see any slums (or maybe some of them are multiple floor slums).
Its good to see Vietnam growing fast.
SeeMacau June 11th, 2004, 02:05 PM The slums are locate other side of the Saigon river (District 4 if i do not remember wrong) .. and there are still a lot of poor people living in Saigon at the moment, some of them live in a multiple floors buildings and only own a small room area ..
The pics shown are one of the most developed area in Saigon (District 1) many office buildings and foreign companies are locate in this area (You can find branches of the banks like BOC, Citibanks, ANZ, Commonwealth, HSBC, DBS ... etc) and District 7 - the denest district in Saigon where all the newly built tall apartments blocks locate
SeeMacau June 11th, 2004, 02:07 PM You can see slums behind the two white buildings (on the right hand side) in District 1, but now it's getting less and less since most of them are demolish and this area is planning to build some tall public apartment buildings

titanic98 June 12th, 2004, 09:31 AM Actually, the lower center black triangle will be replaced by a 36 stories Sabeco (Saigon Beer Corp) Tower under the newest plan. And couple blocks away to the lower left corner will also be a 35 tories tower (in place of the suspended 55 stories Windhorst tower).

SeeMacau June 15th, 2004, 05:06 PM The traffic is very bad too in Saigon ... especially in the morning !!
Vinaboyz June 28th, 2004, 01:00 PM I just went to Vietnam not long ago. Let me tell you that Saigon is the most exciting and bustling city I've ever been to. Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur are nothing compared to it. Pure thrill and adrenalin rush.
maxxam80 July 22nd, 2004, 03:31 PM lets just hope they don't have an urge to own cars otherwise there will be pollution
I visited Ho Chi Minh city in January
and Nha Trang
it seemed like a lot of basic infrastructure work was going on
this city has the chance to devlop into something special and different than other se asian cities
and it has an 80 million pop country to back it up
still low rise though
nice and cheap compared to London though
sindell July 22nd, 2004, 04:13 PM Vietnam is suck and a impovished communist country!!!! Generally, people there are not nice. They're all cheater, and selfish.

kiretoce July 22nd, 2004, 09:43 PM Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) has lots of potential, pretty soon it'll join the ranks of the great cities of SEA.

Not bad at all, Vietnam sure is getting more modern. The streets in those areas are very clean and well kept.:applause:

SeeMacau October 6th, 2004, 03:42 PM HCM City may hit 11.5 %
Ho Chi Minh City’s economic growth rate may reach 11.5 percent by the end of the year - the highest percentage in the past four years – announced Le Thanh Hai, chairman of HCM City People’s Committee during the 18th regular meeting in the city on Tuesday.
The meeting was told that the city’s GDP achieved 10.5 percent by September. The industrial and construction sectors recorded the highest percentage of 12.7 percent while the trade and services sector achieved 9.6 percent.
The individual economic sector took the lead for the first time in terms of growth with 13.3 percent, followed by the foreign-invested economic sector (11.8 percent) and State economic sector (8.1 percent).
The city’s budget so far this year has hit US$2.38 billion – and increase of 30.7 percent compared with the corresponding period.
The city, however, will try more to gain the set target of 12 percent by the end of this year, Mr Hai said.
SeeMacau October 13th, 2004, 12:37 PM A city-wide subway system (195 km by the year of 2020) is planned for Ho Chi Minh City, in southern Vietnam (formerly known as Saigon). The population in the metropolitan area is about 3.5 million.
According to the master plan announced in February 2001, the inner metro system will comprise the following routes:
- Northwest-Southeast (46.86km long with 44 stops)
- Inner Belt (43.14km, 45 stops)

- Hoa Hung-Hanoi Highway-Thu Thiem (21km, 18 stops)
- Ben Thanh-District 2-District 9-Thu Duc (27.5 km, 18 stops)
- Bien Hoa-Binh Chanh-Hoa Hung (46 km, 42 stops)
The master plan for the metro project also includes the development of routes running outside HCM City. These include the 43km Long Binh-Hoc Mon route, the Hoc Mon-Binh Chanh-Tien Giang route, the Thu Duc-Long Binh-Long Thanh-Vung Tau route and the Thu Thiem-Long Binh Vung Tau route.
Two priority lines:
1) Quang Trung - Tan Son Nhat - Ben Thanh Line: 10 km, half surface, half underground
2) Ben Thanh - Binh Tay Market Line: 7 km, 8 stations, all underground
Platform length: 125 m
Average station distance: 700 - 1,300 m
Max speed: 80 km/h
Headway: 4 min. (min. 2 min.)
Gauge: 1,435 mm
Car width: 3 m
Construction start - 2005

Vinaboyz October 15th, 2004, 09:24 AM I can imagine the whole complex would look awesome. As at today, there aren't highrises that are built next to one another in Saigon.
This is a huge waste of land in the city though with the tennis court and so on

versalvin November 3rd, 2004, 08:25 PM On November 1st, the new master plan for the development of Thu Thiem District in Saigon has been presented by the Sasaki Associates
The images and contexts of the project are courtesy of Sasaki Associates:
Thu Thiem New Urban Center Master Plan
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Thu Thiem is located across the Saigon River from the historic center of Ho Chi Minh City. Sasaki Associates won the top prize as part of an open, juried international design competition focused on development of a conceptual idea as to how the Thu Thiem area may be developed. Within the past 300 years, Ho Chi Minh City has evolved from a small riverbank settlement into a metropolis of 6 million people. In the 21st Century, Ho Chi Minh City continues to be defined by its relationship with the river. Where the Saigon River once formed an edge of the city, it will now be its heart. The Thu Thiem district is to emerge along the east bank of the river, representing the contemporary evolution of the city’s extraordinary bond with the Saigon. The development of Thu Thiem New Urban District will be a model for the long-term sustainable growth of Ho Chi Minh City.
The Thu Thiem district has been the subject of numerous planning studies within the past several years. The goal of the idea competition was to derive a planning concept that represents an "optimal idea", with "high feasibility". There are 4 objectives, namely:
1. Establish the relationship between Thu Thiem and the existing city center.
2. Establish the land use and circulation elements for the new district.
3. Establish a sustainable development model that responds to the natural environment of Thu Thiem.
4. Establish a plan concept that is feasible, and may be implemented over time.

SeeMacau November 24th, 2004, 12:27 PM Central Park office building is expected to open in HCMC's District 1 within a month.
Vinh Quang Trade Service Joint Stock Co. financed the US$2.4-million building located at 208 Nguyen Trai Street.
Central Park will have 14 floors and a basement garage. Its ground floor will be for showrooms. Eleven floors are earmarked for offices for rent.
The top floor will house the so-called Lobby Lounge with an Internet cafe, a restaurant and an entertainment area.
Central Park's managing director Vu Hoai Nam said six companies have already rented 60% of the building, which has an automatic fire alarm system and modern equipment.
After Central Park is opened, Vinh Quang Trade Service will continue to invest in a similar project at 117-119-121 Nguyen Du Street in District 1.
The real estate company was established two years ago.
tq December 28th, 2004, 08:40 PM I have to say Saigon is beautiful and cool but the number one city is for me Hanoi. I bet Hanoi will be or is more beautiful than Saigon, because the most people in Vietnam always say so and I think the government would also agree.

kiku99 January 3rd, 2005, 04:39 AM On November 1st, the new master plan for the development of Thu Thiem District in Saigon has been presented by the Sasaki Associates
4. Establish a plan concept that is feasible, and may be implemented over time.

wow..very nice plan.
lovesaigon January 3rd, 2005, 03:38 PM tq, maybe you're right....
Because Vietnamese goverment always make Hanoi more priority in everything, meanwhile Saigon has more advantages. In Saigon, just a Thu Thiem Tunnel or Thu Thiem Bridge with only about 100 mil$, they had postpone many times. And Saigon river has just 2 bridge to cross... hic hic... And Saigon need, really need more bridge.
Beside, Hanoi, had 4 bridge project like Vinh Tuy, Nhat Tan, and each over $200 mil $, they already began to be construct or will be constructed in 2005. And Red River (in Hanoi) already has more than 5 bridges crossing. hic hic. And you know, Saigon is more big than Hanoi, and develop faster than Hanoi.
But,........ it's unfair..... really unfair..... not only in construction, but also in everything.
So, maybe you're right... Hanoi will be more beautiful than Saigon.
But I'm a Saigonese. I hope Saigon will deserve to be the most beautiful in Vietnam.

So, maybe you're right... Hanoi will be more beautiful than Saigon.
But I'm a Saigonese. I hope Saigon will deserve to be the most beautiful in Vietnam.
I have to say Saigon is beautiful and cool but the number one city is for me Hanoi. I bet Hanoi will be or is more beautiful than Saigon, because the most people in Vietnam always say so and I think the government would also agree.
Im a Saigonese and i think it's simply unfair and inadequate to compare the two cities based on the basis of infrastructure development. Saigon has always been much more aggressive and liberal/openness than Hanoi. Saigon simply says, is much more dynamic as seen through its bursting entertainment industry and economic attractions...etc. Saigon therefore is easily surpassed Hanoi in terms of economic and infrastructure, and technological developments.
Saigon is relatively a young city comparing to the millenium-age-old Hanoi.
Thus the special characteristic that only Hanoi has is the fact that Hanoi has been a political, literary, poetic, and artistic center of Vietnam for the last 1000 years. It's an artist heaven; with beautiful lakes and traditional architectures. It has an easy going atmosphere as comparing to the aggresive Saigon. Its uniquesness can be see through the eyes of an American artist Bradford Edwards whom says "You can drop in at artists' homes for tea,....So few art scenes still have that sense of community."
Beside you probably have heard of this old Vietnamese proverb "If you want to make money, go South. If you want to be an artist, stay in Hanoi."
So i hope then the government lets each city to develope in its own path rather than imposed its own political wills.
Saigonese January 3rd, 2005, 11:30 PM It's seems rather unfair to me that all the major government projects are concentrating in Hanoi while Saigon mostly have to make do with private or foreign funded projects. Even major projects in Saigon are continually delayed. The five major projects next year will be in Hanoi, not Saigon.
lovesaigon January 4th, 2005, 05:08 PM yeah, I agree with you, Saigonese.
And you know, the goverment also has forced the foreign invester to invest in Hanoi. Have you ever heard about Renesas Technology Corp. ? The goverment had forced this company to invest in Hanoi. And this company had warned that, if the goverment continued to force them to invest in Hanoi, they would withdraw. And at last, the goverment had made concession... And many others...
I hope the foreign investers, when want to invest in Vietnam, have to regconize clearly where has more advantages with them, not where they force to invest.
tq January 4th, 2005, 05:51 PM But the most important thing is to support and represent both in foreign countries. Vietnam is just the half without Hanoi and Saigon. After all in both cities are living vietnamese people.
Saigonese January 5th, 2005, 11:13 AM We don't really care. Hanoians and the government is leeching my Saigon to death. Saigon contributes something like 40% of the state budget and gets nothing in return while Hanoi is being propped up by the government and the corrupted officials. I read in vnexpress that next year's 5 biggest projects will be in Hanoi and hte North, not in the South or Saigon. That's hardly fair to me. This government is divisive for that matter. What the government doing is not economically sound. Saigon should be allowed to spearhead the Vietnamese economy and should not be constrained by any mean, which in effect will hamper the national progress as well.
Yes Lovesaigon I've heard alot of those things. The government is explicitly biased and encouraging businesses to invest in the north at the expense of Saigon without even realising that investors prefer the south over the north for a variety of reasons, such as basic infrastructure, consumer base and skill base.
SUNNI January 5th, 2005, 03:56 PM The trade tower has a very interesting design,,,
Saigon looks much cleaner than i expected :)

Jaroslaw February 2nd, 2005, 03:35 PM Yes, this is Phu My Hung, or South Saigon. The location is a 12 story office building standing literally in an empty field. There is little construction visible here, however. The cranes on the R in the second photo are port cranes. The ferris wheel is also a great place from which to take photos. Where is that crazy mini-hotel with pagoda?
tq February 2nd, 2005, 09:21 PM The Skyline of HCMC have to developed fast to being comperable with other. Hopefully it will happen in the next years.
Saigonese February 3rd, 2005, 05:10 AM I'm in Saigon now. You start to see some sort of a skyline now although the progress is quite slow.
And yes, Phu My Hung is very desolated.

What is the population of saigon right now, 7-8 million people right. Man that is damn congested with poor infrastructure and not enough housing, plus the old house that need to be demolished to built a new one.

LOL Saigon has always been the place to be in Indochina.
Imagine someday saigon will become an autonomous region in Vietnam.....the pearl gonna shine again......but now it's still trying hard to cope with Hanoi :p
Well Saigon will always be ahead of Hanoi. But I'd much prefer the three regions achieving high growth with the help of the South to drag Central and North along. It's all good for the country.

Saigoneseguy April 19th, 2005, 09:22 AM The construction of a nine-storey information technology institute, where IT training schools and companies can establish their head offices, will kick off this Saturday in Ho Chi Minh City’s software park.
http://www.thanhniennews.com/images/newsimages/mohinh-105.gif
The twin modern buildings of the SaigonTEL-Private University Hung Vuong will be built in the Quang Trung Software Park and function as a media, communications and commerce center.
About 50 companies and 2,000 experts are expected to work at the institute. The institute also plans to recruit 2,000 students.
According to experts, the institute is the first model of a high-tech center in Vietnam. Investors will also benefit from many preferential policies like full tax exemption during the first four years in operation and 50-per cent tax exemption for the next nine years.
Jaroslaw April 22nd, 2005, 04:36 AM What is the "giai toa tragedy"?
That satellite photo is amazing! It downloads slowly but it's so worth it!
Now I realize how big Saigon is, there is a lot of it out of bounds still, including the northern districts... I'm dying to see District 2 in a photo like this!
It seems to have been taken at least a year ago, The Manor is not under construction yet, it seems, and the Saigon Pearl site is not cleared.

Ảnh: P.A.
