Come to think of it, are there any bauhaus buildings in Singapore?

The original Cathay Building?
Or those quaint apartments near Portsdown?

Please enlighten me as to what Bauhaus is :)

Remember the news?

Tel Aviv's bauhaus buildings had been declared a World Heritage site.

Bauhaus is 'cubic' ,plain Minimalist style buildings.Flat roofs ,sometimes with curved balconies.

Perhaps some blocks of the old KK Hospital?

If I'm not wrong, Bauhaus is a child movement of de stijl. So Moulmein Rise and Lincoln Modern are bauhaus buildings I think.

There're some very old apartments at Portsdown and somewhere near MacKenzie Road that looks like bauhaus. Also, one poor building at Little India.Standing all alone admist shophouses.

no they're not. they're more like low-cost-housing style. low cost housing should be a genre by itself.

redstone
June 28th, 2004, 05:12 PM
There's not such style, brother.I ment architecture style.

heirloom
June 28th, 2004, 05:17 PM
welll i dont know... i dont think you could call those bauhaus, nor could you call it brutalist. low cost housing seem to have a style on their own, even the newer ones like the one i stay in (7 or 8 years old). first, they are invariably painted. they have very simple forms (although newest flats are breaking out of those conventions a little with curved windows and some panelled area). ah ok it sudddenly hit me. they are pre-fabricated. the simple shapes, lack of cladding and not very smooth concrete give it a sort of umm low cost mass built look. it's definitely quite distinguishable from other styles.

redstone
June 28th, 2004, 05:19 PM
Bauhaus does not have to be lowrise, has it? (I'm asking a question)

The term "bauhaus" now makes my feaking hair stand. I juz completed a major semester project on the freaking Bauhaus design movement. Took 3 freaking months, and 250 freaking dollars to complete. Got so freaking stressed during the final phase of the project that i was freaking hospitalized. Ask any Mass Communications about their Bauhaus project experience and u'll see their faces turn freaking purple.

whoever who started this forum...thanks for bringing back my freaking nightmare. haha.

The Bauhaus is a school of design, founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar (Germany) in 1919. The Bauhaus movement has revolutionised the structure and basis of art school education.

The Bauhaus school of design covers NUMEROUS disciplines, under its arm includes the schools of photography, painting, metal works, furniture, sculpture, dance, theatre, textiles, graphics, prints, typography and of cos, ARCHITECTURE. It is the single most profound movement that has greatly moulded the comtemporary arts we have today.

Bauhaus artists are interested in eliminating subject matter from their compositions, and instead focus on the elements of design themselves. The Bauhaus can be reduced to THREE concepts...

1. Form follows function
2. Economy of form
3. Integrity of materials

ok, let's clarify some matters...

Bauhaus buildings are NOT necessarily minimalistic, or antique. As i've mentioned earlier, Bauhaus has profound influence in our MODERN CONTEMPORARY movement.

Here are some major classic examples of Bauhaus building in Singapore...(don't be surprised...heehee)

1.Suntec City
2.WheelLock Place
3.CityLink Mall
4.Gallery Evason Hotel

These examples are given by my lecturers and textbooks.

HDB flats cannot be labeled Bauhaus bulidings.

But we may say that they are Bauhaus-influenced. Many buildings may be called Bauhaus-inluenced as the Bauhaus has become the spine of modernity. So it can be rather general.

So there are buildings that are truly Bauhaus, and many many others that simply happen to be Bauhaus influenced.

Its rather controversial, many will have differing opinions.

Oh i forgot to list one of the most significant example of Bauhaus architecture in S'pore...TEMASEK POLY!

part of me agrees with you that they should have just left it, after all it is still ok, and a bit grimy adds to the character and sense of 'old Singapore'

but the fresh coat of paint also makes it look cheerful and brings out its features better.

It's Modern style with capital M.

Early Modern, same style as Chee Guan Chiang House or the more famous Villa Savoye. ;)

Ahhh...Thanks
After frequenting Kallang Sea Sports Centre for quite sometime now, the authorities finally decided to clear the old trees and debris from this old building (c1937?) at the fringe of the old airport....now just opposite the PWD canteen on the stadium side. Enough of take some decent shots. Looks like they are going to refurbish it. The building's got curved balconies as well. I will post some pics here. Pls feel free to move them if appropriate.

To add, I think the original building was double-storey. The 3rd storey and roof looks like a later addition. The water drainage channels appear at the top of the 2nd level.

Yup...

The top floor looks very 'budget' and poorly built.
A later addition.

What was it used as before?

A nice and simple building 'cheapened' by the additions
