Phobos June 12th, 2004, 07:17 AM the dome is pretty, but the towers and the lateral parts do not match with the rest of the structure...

i'm shocked. this church is the finest piece of architecture you can find in vienna. there was a architecture competition under the best architects of the time and it was won by fischer von erlach, probably the most important architect of vienna, his teacher was francesco borromini the finest baroque architect ever. he also designed schönbrunn for example. but this church is a milestone in the history of architecture. till this time vienna was in terms of architecture a part of italy, this was not only the first viennese building, but it was also one of the first eclecticistic buildings without a special style (it was build from 1715-1725).
it is a perfect collage of the trajan's column (symbol for mightiness) but you can also see them as minarets;
of the greek temple (symbol for wisdome);
dome and pavillions left and right of the greek temple referrs to roman baroque architecture. (symbol for religion) but it can also be seen as a reference towards islamic architecture of the time;
so the design of this church is not only far beyond it's time, it is a very strong statement for the unity of mankind, peace and tolerance through all religions of this world. you don't have to forget that vienna is very catholic and at this time vienna was besieged by muslim armies 2 times, which was a catastrophe for the city, and there was always the fear that they come back.
Jarmo K June 12th, 2004, 05:59 PM hey, thanks Michael for the information! (: i was too tired to search some myself the other day.... :blush:

I'm not depreciating It's historical value,which is really interesting.
The only thing I don't like is the trajan's column that I think doesn't match with the rest of the building and neither with Baroque churches.

watchman June 26th, 2004, 03:48 AM I used to live a few blocks from this church. How I miss my 2nd home. Ich bin ein Wiener!
watchman June 26th, 2004, 02:15 PM By the way, two decades ago, me and my siblings were playing there in the playground, when I got curious over the reflecting pool in front Karlskirche. I was inspired by the vagabonds whom I regularly see swimming abouts in the said pool. As I entered the water, to my surprise the bottom was covered with muck and I slipped - I slid ever slowly towards the center. My younger sister and brother pannicked and went after me, which turned out to be a bigger mistake, because they themselves fell into the same natural trap.
It took a wonderful soul to save us three from drowning and turn the whole place into a memorial instead of an urban park. Whoever that guy was, I bless him, I thank him for his selflessness in saving my bro, sis, and me. God bless him!
Hardouin-Mansart December 6th, 2004, 10:31 PM It's a preposterous mannerist exercise, typical Fischer von Erlach product... and you could sweat blood trying to find "fine" pieces of architecture in Vienna: Dominikanerk or even the Petersk can hardly get close.
