viedumonde April 11th, 2010, 02:39 PM INTRODUCTION
Ahmedabad, seventh largest populous city of India and Commercial Capital of Gujarat State has unique identity recognize by River Sabarmati and Gandhi Ashram established on its western Bank (Famous World over by Name Satyagrah Ashram). Sultan Ahmad Shah established the city in 1411. The City is spared over area of 190.84 Sq. Km. The River Sabarmati flows from north to south in the center of the city and splits the city in almost two equal parts. The city encompasses Population of about 4.5 million. Ahmedabad experiences hot and arid climate with scanty Rainfall. River Sabarmati is backbone of the development of Urban Sprawl of Ahmedabad.
At present the riverfront lies neglected and characterized by unimaginative and unplanned development. It’s potential to provide city level social infrastructure and recreation facilities lie untapped. Though it is a major source of water for the city and despite the building of a major barrage to retain water, except for a few months during the monsoon the river is dry. Sewage contaminated storm water out-falls and the dumping of industrial waste pose a major health and environmental hazard. Though the riverbanks and bed provide a place to stay and source of livelihood for many poor citizens, the riverbank slums are disastrously flood prone and lack basic infrastructure services. The slums located along the riverbed also pose a major impediment to efficient management of monsoon floods in the river.
It has long been acknowledged that appropriate development of the riverfront can turn the river into a major asset, which can improve the quality of environment and life in Ahmedabad and improve the efficiency of its infrastructure. In May 1997, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation established the Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) under Section 149 (3) of the Companies Act 1956. The SRFDCL was provided with seed capital of Rs. one crore and charged with the responsibility of developing the Sabarmati Riverfront. In August 1997, the SRFDCL appointed Environmental Planning Collaborative (EPC) a city based not for profit urban planning and urban development management consulting firm to prepare a comprehensive proposal for the development of the Sabarmati Riverfront.
viedumonde April 11th, 2010, 02:40 PM EARLIER PROPOSALS
Proposal for Integrated Planning and Development of the Sabarmati Riverfront by Mr. Bernard Kohn (1961).
Mr. Bernard Kohn, a French architect residing in Ahmedabad during the early 60’s, visualized the development of the Sabarmati Riverfront with a mix of commercial, recreational and residential developments along both the banks of the river from Gandhi Bridge to Sardar Bridge. The proposal called for reclamation of about 30 ha of land, of which a part was to be sold or leased for commercial development. The proposal showed that the entire development could be self-financing.
Technical Studies Commissioned by the Government of Gujarat.
Technical Feasibility Study by CWPRS, Khadakvasla (1966)
Hydraulic studies using physical models were conducted to simulate water flows in the river. The CWPRS study concluded that the Kohn Proposal was technically feasible.
Contour Survey
The Sabarmati Barrage Division around the same time as the CWPRS Study carried out a detailed contour survey of the river.
The River Front Development Group Proposal - RFDG (1976).
This proposal was prepared by a group of local professional firms: Ahmedabad Study Action Group; Design Associates, Architects; M/s Hasmukh C. Patel; Architects, M/s K. B. Mehta, Builders and Engineers; Vakil-Mehta-Sheth, Consulting Engineers and Virat Thakore, Urban Designer. It was conceptually similar to the Kohn Proposal but suggested an incremental approach to reduce the need for initial capital outlay.
National River Conservation Plan -NRCP (1992).
In 1992, Sabarmati River was included in the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP). The main thrust of the Sabarmati River Cleaning Project (SRCP) under NRCP Project is to stop sewage from entering the river through the storm water drainage system. More specifically it proposes: interception and diversion works; the construction of trunk sewers and pumping stations in the periphery of the city; the desilting of storm water drains; the up-gradation of existing sewage treatment plants and; the provision of sanitation infrastructure in river bank slums.
Sabarmati River Front Development - Feasibility Report, CEPT (1997).
The CEPT Proposal envisages the riverfront from Subhash Bridge to Vasna Barrage as a set of publicly accessible open spaces and recreational areas connected by walkways and promenades. It envisages the reclamation of 30 ha proposed by the Kohn Proposal and in addition to that the reclamation of a strip of 20 meters along the west bank and 10 meters along the east bank. The proposal presumes the completion of the ongoing NRCP project to tackle the problem of sewage entering the river. The proposal suggests the formation of detailed urban design guidelines for each zone. It suggests that the entire riverfront development can be self-financing.

India101 April 11th, 2010, 03:05 PM From the Ahmedabad thread all the way from 2006 till today -
Finding three very interesting articles about this city in quick succession prompted me to post a new thread -- on what could be the first Indian city to really strive for a proper, planned, skyscraper-filled CBD!
Firstly, this article:
Riverfront a dream for local realtors? (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1584715.cms)
[ Sunday, May 28, 2006 09:43:18 pmTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]
AHMEDABAD: There's some bad news for local developers who have been salivating at the thought of sinking their teeth into the juiciest bit of realty in town - the Sabarmati riverfront.
The river's banks may not really become a playground for the smaller fish. Biggies like Unitech, DLF, Rahejas and Emaar may actually traipse away with the mega-deals that will be on offer later this year.
The government is planning to invite global bids for large chunks of land in the 32 hectares earmarked for commercial and residential development.
The government's view is that it does not make sense in splitting up the land into small plots. Instead, narrow strips of land stretching up to 1 km each could be considered the minimum unit.
As many as 20 hectares are to be sold for commercial projects and the remaining 12 hectares are allocated for residential projects.
What will make the project particularly viable for global and national players is the high FSI (floor space index) that is being planned to allow the building of skyscrapers, especially in the central business district (CBD) proposed between the Nehru Bridge and the Gandhi Bridge.
Confirming this, SRFDCL chairman Anil Mukim said, "The overriding concern is that the project matches global standards." The idea is that it will be easy to handle the infrastructural needs - like parking - if each developer is given large tracts of land. Besides, it will help maintain the desired skyline   and synergy in design."
The invitation for global bids could be out as early as October 2006, the deadline for completion of walkways along the 11.5 km-long stretch between Subhash Bridge and Vasna Barrage.
With the urban design plan is on course, to be ready by August-September 2006, the General Development and Control Regulations are expected to be finalised by October 2006 after which global bids would be invited.
This latest twister comes after local builders were even given a sneak preview at a private screening by the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited earlier.
The only Ahmedabad-based realty player who looks capable of generating such resources is Adani group chairman Gautam S Adani, who has just bagged one of the biggest realty deals in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla complex.
"A proper job which would meet international standards is possible only if large chunks of land are offered," he said. Players like K Raheja Corp also can't help drooling. "We will certainly pitch in when bids are invited," said a K Raheja Corp spokesperson.

The ambitious project involves creating embankments on both sides and developing a 10.5 km stretch along each of the banks — from Subhash Bridge to Vasna Barrage.
The project is poised to resuscitate the river’s decadent image and restore people’s pride in the Sabarmati. The project was first mooted by Bernard Kohn, a French architect in Ahmedabad during the early 1960s, along with other city planners. They visualised the development of the Sabarmati riverfront with a mix of commercial, recreational and residential structures from Gandhi Bridge to Sardar Bridge.
After various modifications, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRDCL) was set up in 1997 to execute the plan. However, the project was kicked off only last year. The makeover required reclamation of about 30 hectares of land, a part of which was to be sold or leased for commercial development. The proposal aims at selffinance. “Our projections show that the project would be completed by 2008, at a proposed expenditure of Rs 1,060 crore,” says a senior officer of SRDCL.
There are, however, sharp deviations from Kohn’s original proposal. The new plan emphasises road network. A six-lane wide road, the ‘East River Drive’, has been proposed along the eastern bank, while a four- lane stretch, ‘West River Drive’, will come up on the other bank, apart from developing the riverfront as a public space for Amdavadis.

Sabarmati Project Realty Development Next Year (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Markets/Real_Estate/Sabarmati_project_realty_development_next_year/articleshow/3185840.cms)
AHMEDABAD: Real estate development at the Rs 800-crore Sabarmati River Front project is all set to begin by the end of this financial year, reports Avinash Nair.
About 22% of the total 168 hectares of land reclaimed as part of this key landmark project will be open for developments in both commercial and residential segments, states a report from Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj (JLLM), a global real estate consultancy firm.
“About 22% of the land (34 hectares) will be released for sale for the development of commercial and residential properties on the riverside. These developments in the centre of the city will result in the expansion of the city’s already established business districts like Ashram Road, the walled city, Shahibaug, Kalupur and Relief Road,” says the report.
According to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the civic body handling the project, the reclaimed land would be available for real-estate developments as early as December 2008.
So Apr 09 at the latest, but if the AMC really think they can get it done by Dec 08, thats all the better!

Is riverfront project inclusive? (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Ahmedabad/Is_riverfront_project_inclusive/articleshow/3692590.cms)
AHMEDABAD: Whatever grandeur and pomp the coveted Sabarmati riverfront project may promise Amdavadis in the coming years, it now faces an unusual
dilemma.
Will this multi-crore project remain a mere eyecandy in city’s urban history and turn into an indulgence of the rich and the land sharks or can it integrate the citys bustling culture and its poor towards the citys ethos.
A three-week seminar and workshop at CEPT university, starting November 24 would see a number of architecture scholars and involve workshops for students from across the country on the subject. Environmental issues too would be discussed. The workshop would focus on ways of architectural expression of civic choices that can be integrated fully in the riverfront design to uphold the citys social values.
These values, according to architecture scholars, can have a direct influence on design decisions of the riverfront which must answer to how well it appeals to all citizens equally, especially the poorest. The workshop would also study the regional aspects of Sabarmati river development.
What architects fear today is that an uncontrollable biased growth of the riverfront will only bring developers, high-rise buildings, and limit free access to the river for people belonging to various classes. Besides the idea of realising parks, greenways for the city, places for people to sit around, children, strolling, sport and leisure activities along banks, would only take a back seat. Also the consequences of roads that would only act as a thoroughfare for fast traffic for the wealthy, would limit the Sabarmati to a few.
"Buildings, however, impressive or even beautiful they may be, fail, if they do not embody what Louis Kahn expresses as a search for meaning in community. This is the principle of the workshop," says a senior professor at CEPT.
Among other issues, the workshop would work on consequences of the development of the river, both upstream and downstream. The workshop would also look at the social, economic and cultural identity of the riverfront in the coming years. Besides a model of an "all green" alternative of the riverfront, minus the traffic would be featured at the workshop.
^^
Ok... personal view, which others will def disagree with, but I honestly feel that Ahmedabad is the only major city in India where a project like this would even get underway. Yet even then, idiots are claiming that by removing slums and giving a facelift to the whole riverfront, Ahmedabad will somehow be losing something!
Back in the days when Shakespeare was putting on plays at the Globe, the South Bank of the Thames was teeming with slums, prostitution, potent blindness-causing alcohol and all manner of crime and filth.
It was only the Great Fire that gave London a chance to completely rebuild, redesign and emerge as the most efficient and therefore important city in the world for many hundreds of years.
Sometimes these socialist-minded people need to realise that the decisions that India needs to make right now aren't all that different to what the West had to do albeit a few hundred years ago! They should really stop having a go at the people who are actually trying to make a difference.
A nice Riverfront isn't an essential by any means, but it's something that will improve the image of the City for investors and improve the quality of life and general civic pride of the local population, its not Ahmedabad's fault that it is one of the few cities in India that actually has adequate infrastructure (roads/water/electricity etc), therefore allowing it to develop some of the seemingly more "frivolous" aspects of city planning such as riverfronts and parks.
Now you can walk on this Wall Street (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Ahmedabad/Now_you_can_walk_on_this_Wall_Street/articleshow/3985796.cms)
AHMEDABAD: As the city's history collapses in bits into oblivion with crumbling walls, the Sabarmati riverfront project has incorporated plans to
save the old city's fort wall so that people can actually walk over it, just like 600 years ago.
The project involves making a walkway on the 500 metre length of the last remaining city wall stretches behind Khanjaan Darwaza and Indulal Yagnik park on the riverside. With some street fares to pepper the trip upon the wall, the walk will be an opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of Ahmedabad's heritage.
The ambitious plan will be taken up as part of a joint exercise between Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). A
detailed project report is being prepared with relative cost estimates.
"For strengthening the fort wall, we have the retaining wall of SRFDCL that would come up alongside. Some base structures of the wall too will be strengthened. We are consulting heritage experts. We will have a three to four metre wide walkway on top of the wall. A major part of the project will be part of SRFDCL," says AMC commissioner IP Gautam.
SRFDCL authorities say the project is integrated into the pedestrianisation plans of Bhadra fort and Teen Darwaza. The stretch will boast of a 'pedestrian only' zone, on the lines of Marienplatz of Europe. Earlier, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by AMC with the Euro-India centre forum for urban heritage conservation, for this project.
The 500-metre city wall falls just behind Bhadra fort and Pankor Naka and promises an enriching experience. The stretch will have a web of streets meant only for pedestrians.
The main roads in the plan, which will be declared pedestrian zones, include Relief Road, Sardarbaug approach, Teen Darwaza pass and Bhadra Court approach.

Sabarmati riverfront by 2010 (http://www.projectsmonitor.com/detailnews.asp?newsid=15409)
Renu Rajaram
The Sabarmati riverfront development project in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is progressing at a fast pace. Phase-I of the project, extending from the railway bridge near Sabarmati Ashram to Vasna barrage, is over, and work on phase-II has begun. The project, located along 10 km of the river bank, is expected to be complete by 2010—and promises to give a new face to Ahmedabad. The total investment in the two phases is likely to touch Rs 700 crore.
The scheme envisages comprehensive development of both the banks of the historical river which passes through the centre of the walled city. It involves river dredging, constructing retaining walls, providing storm water outfalls, ghats and jetties, reclaiming 162 hectares, providing interceptor sewers, creating parks gardens, designing new streets and promenades with better street lighting, and housing for economically weaker sections.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation floated Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Ltd in 1997, though the project was inaugurated only in April 2003, and actual work on the project started in early 2005. SRFDCL appointed Environmental Planning Collaborative, a city-based not-for-profit urban planning and development management consulting firm to prepare a comprehensive proposal for the development of Sabarmati riverfront.
Anand Patel, Architect, HCP Design and Project Management, a sister concern of EPC, says that major works undertaken so far include construction of a two ft thick and 40-55 ft deep 'diaphragm' to separate the 30-ft wide promenade or walkway and a 'retention' wall which is being built along the promenade. Though the walkway is almost complete, it is not yet open for public as work on the wall is still in progress. SRFDCL has so far spent Rs 250 crore on phase-I.
About 70 per cent work on laying 'interceptor' sewers on either side of the river has been completed. The two sewer lines will carry the city's sewage to the two treatment plants in Vasna and Pirana, thereby keeping the river clean, which remains polluted as sewage falls directly into it.
SRFDCL officials said currently work is on for reclamation of about 162 hectares along the riverbank. This would help generate enough land for construction of roads, gardens, markets, commercial and residential space, public utilities, ghats and promenades on either side of the river. According to officials, the land would be available by April-May 2009. About 28 per cent land would be consumed for road development, 26 per cent for gardens and 22 per cent (4.62 hectares) for sale for development of commercial and residential purpose.
River Sabarmati flows from north to south in the centre of Ahmedabad, splitting the city in almost two equal parts. Appropriate development of the riverfront can turn the river into a major asset and improve the quality of environment and life as well as infrastructure in the city.

Sabarmati Riverfront Update
There will be no concept of Floor Space Index (FSI) on Sabarmati Riverfront for now. As the present plan stands, the 20-per cent of land reserved for commercial development has perfect pre-decided geometrical plot shapes that would define the shape of building coming on them and each shape has been assigned the number of floors to go with it. This is the new skyline of the riverfront. Shapes varying from a circle, square, rhombus, quadrilateral and a variety of geometrical forms line the riverfront. These shapes form the building footprint on the riverfront. The saleable built-up area is calculated as a multiple of the area of the footprint and the number of floors assigned to each of the plot shape. The concept of margin space would be completely eliminated from the design as there would be no compound walls encircling the buildings — mainly to save on public space. The owner of a building would have slot for parking within the premises and there would be public parking spaces also. “Our emphasis is on public space. We have reserved 20 per cent of reclaimed land for sale. If costs are recovered by selling building space within 16 per cent of the land, then the rest of the four per cent would be used as public space,” said a senior official of Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL). Once finalised, the shapes and saleable built-up area would be thrown open for investors for discussions and suggestions. A separate development control regulation has been drafted by SRFDCL and is pending approval from the state urban development department. In Wednesday’s SRFDCL board meeting, the committee sanctioned two roads — a sixlane 30-m-wide road which is the ‘East River Drive’, while a four-lane 24-m-wide road, called the ‘West River Drive’. Civil utilities like drainage, electric lines, water and storm water drain utilities would be laid along side road. For now, the roads would extend from Dafnala to Sardar bridge on the east side and from Paldi to Usmanpura on the west side. Pedestrians would have direct access to the river on both banks, while on a small stretch on the eastern side the road will move away from the river because of the unusual topography. Nearly 42.8 hectares of parks and gardens have been envisaged along the river edge to host different recreational functions.
Narendra Modi visits Sabarmati Rivefront (http://deshgujarat.com/2009/11/19/narendra-modi-visits-ahmedabads-sabarmati-riverfront/)
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi spent two hours at Sabarmati Riverfront project site today morning in a surprise visit. Two cabinet ministers including Urban development minister Nitin Patel, Mayor Kanaji Thakor, Municipal Corporation Standing Committee Chairman, Municipal Commissioner, Architect Bimal Shah, Deputy Municipal Commissioner and incharge of the project Captain Mahajan were present during Chief Minister’s visit.
The Chief Minister visited 10.5 km walk-way on both sides of river Sabarmati between Subhash bridge to Vasna. He observed Diaphragm-wall and Retaining wall works that are completed and also watched Earth filing work in progress.

Three proposals received for floating restaurant in Sabarmati river
You can have candlelit dinners aboard a floating restaurant on the Sabarmati river by the end of this year if everything goes according to plan.
The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited(SRFDCL) has as of now planned to have floating restaurants service starting at two places — near Sardar bridge and near Nehru bridge. The plan is to either provide a free ferry service to transport customers to the floating restaurants, or the floating restaurant itself will collect customers from the riverbank.
SRFDCL has received three ‘expressions of interest’ to start a floating restaurant service on the Sabarmati River and five proposals to start a boating transport service on the river. Of the three ‘expressions of interest’ received, one is from Ahmedabad-based Amrapali Group, the other from Akshar Travel and the third is from Hotel Crown.
SRFDCL also plans to start a boating service, water transport service and water sports facilities.
In a few days from now, Amdavadis will innundate the multi-crore riverfront project. Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited has readied a 200 metre stretch between Subhash and Gandhi bridges. We bring to you a peek into what the project will look like, when complete:

The mega Sabarmati riverfront project which promises to retain the essence of activities and livelihood around the river by making ghats, informal markets, open spaces, homes for poor besides business spaces, will be at forefront at the four-day international conference of Commonwealth Inclusive Cities Network (CWICN) to be held in city from April 21. CWICN is a network of inclusive cities to promote sharing of good practices on inclusiveness, social cohesion and strengthening the local government capacity.
Ahmedabad was the first one to sign up for the network from India and now it has joined the league of cities like Birmingham in UK, Brisbane in Australia and Johannesburg in South Africa among other cities from Asia, Canada and Africa.
There are 20 cities from across the globe in the network. The ambitious Sabarmati Riverfront Development (SRFD) project will create realty by reclaiming land along both banks of the river, constricting the waterway to ensure that the river is returned to the people. The riverfront will be developed along 12 km on both banks, covering parts of Ahmedabad up to Gandhinagar. For the design effect, buildings in shapes of circles, square, rhombus and quadrilaterals are planned in prime real estate zones.
The project, currently estimated at Rs 1,500 crore, is slated to be completed by 2012.
Part of the CWICN team, Dinesh Mehta, Professor Emeritus of CEPT University said, “Ahmedabad has made its presence felt not only for its rapid growth but also its inclusive city approach with slew of mega civic projects. This will be the first meeting of the network.”
“The mega projects like BRTS, Sabarmati riverfront and slum networking project of AMC have been crucial in providing an all-round growth of the city and have been discussed at international forums. The member cities will learn from each other about the best practises,” he said. CWICN is part of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) based in London which works to promote and strengthen effective democratic local government throughout the Commonwealth and to facilitate the exchange of good practice in local government structures and services.

Riverfront to be highlighted at Commonwealth meet (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad/Riverfront-to-be-highlighted-at-Commonwealth-meet-/articleshow/5706994.cms)
AHMEDABAD: The mega Sabarmati riverfront project which promises to retain the essence of activities and livelihood around the river by making ghats, informal markets, open spaces, homes for poor besides business spaces, will be at forefront at the four-day international conference of Commonwealth Inclusive Cities Network (CWICN) to be held in city from April 21.
Part of the CWICN team, Dinesh Mehta, Professor Emeritus of CEPT University said, "Ahmedabad has made its presence felt not only for its rapid growth but also its inclusive city approach with slew of mega civic projects. This will be the first meeting of the network."
"The mega projects like BRTS, Sabarmati riverfront and slum networking project of AMC have been crucial in providing an all-round growth of the city and have been discussed at international forums. The member cities will learn from each other about the best practises," he said.
CWICN is part of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) based in London which works to promote and strengthen effective democratic local government throughout the Commonwealth and to facilitate the exchange of good practice in local government structures and services.
I'm looking forward to seeing these buildings.

Phase II Of The Project Envisages An Additional 51-Km Route Ahmedabad: Imagine traveling by the Sabarmati riverfront in metro rail. This was to be a reality when the ambitious metro project was drawn up. It is not just the Vishala-Akshardham route and the Thaltej-Kalupur corridor that the project was all about. In fact, it had a second phase, which aimed at setting up a corridor along the banks of Sabarmati and adding 51 km to the phase 1 while traversing from Changodar, Sarkhej, Iskon along SG Road, Khodiyar, Tarapur up to GIFT city.
The route is spelt out in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) report submitted to the state government in 2005. The second phase of the metro has at least four extensions and covered several important destinations. This also involved a few stations on the 132-feet Ring Road.
DMRC, however, refused a direct connection to the airport for both the metro rail and the regional rail stating that “it would not be justified even in 2035 as the air passenger growth rate would be just 10 per cent by that year”.
The total phase 1 entailed a 43.55-km route while phase 2 involved a route of an additional 51 km. An extension of the metro railway was sought from Vasna to Changodar, Sarkhej to Gandhinagar via SG Road, another line from Vasna to Sabarmati along the 132-feet Ring Road and an exclusive corridor along the Sabarmati riverfront.
Another major move was fusing the metro with the regional rail network that passes right through the heart of the city. The DMRC had demanded three extensions to the regional rail tracks —Barejadi-Kalupur-Kalol
and Kalupur-Naroda. The extension involved a line along the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar via SG Road and one between Vasna and Sabarmati.
“The regional rail extensions together with the existing BRTS network was to complete the seamless transport system for the city. In fact, the complete extension of the regional rail network and the BRTS was meant to connect the metro rail by 2025. Some of the metro changeover junctions where one could shift from one mode of transport to the other were few according to the new plan. We are looking into the nitty gritty of the sys tem,” said a senior GIDB official

Nice find vierumonde. Hope Ahmedabad metro gets green signal soon.
Then if everythis goes well as per the plan, it'll be a nice ride in Metro along the river bank.
Hope to visit Gujarat's commercial capital some day.

Personally I dont think its a good idea to run a full scale metro on the riverbank. I dont know how to put this in better terminology, but the number of people depending on the metro will reduce to half for the simplest reason that one whole side is just river, and another side is commercial district.
If its run on Ashram road or the Railway line parallel to Ashram road, the number of people depending on the system will be more than what will it be on the riverbank.
They should start a cheaper solution like a cable car running from Vadaj, all the way to Paldi for touristic purpose.
India101 April 13th, 2010, 01:49 AM They should put a monorail. It would be quieter...

THE SOIL TOIL: How did the riverfront get its platform? Here’s how: 12 lakh truckloads (1.11 crore cubic metres) of soil was layered and smoothened to build the promenades on. More will come. The highest point of elevation is eight metres while the lowest point is four metres
http://cms.mumbaimirror.com/portalfiles/28/3/201005/Image/2010-05-01/12-5.jpg
WALL IZZ WELL: The project has two kinds — retaining walls and diaphragm walls. Till now 3,30,000 square metres of diaphragm walls, two feet in width have been constructed. The height of these walls will vary between four and 8 metres are different spots. The 15-foot-high retaining walls (1,15,000 sq mtrs built till now) will divide the lower and upper promenades and hold the earth filled to elevate the river bed

STEELY GRIP: All begins with the skeleton, a vital component to hold the flesh and blood. Nearly 38,800 metric tonnes of steel has gone into
reinforcing the retaining and diaphragm walls

Commercial space will change the course of city’s shopping hubs which have moved westward over the years. An arcade here will bring a shift, say AMC officials. They say the project is not about the two riverbanks, but a holistic development of areas along them.

AMC begins laying road on Riverfront (http://www.ahmedabadmirror.com/index.aspx?page=article§id=3&contentid=2010041020100410032832241fd74fe94)
Soon, the Sabarmati riverfront will be motorable, allowing you to avoid the city’s congested traffic, as Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has started building roads along it. The municipal corporation has started laying the road on the 7-km-long stretch between Usmanpura and Sardar Bridge. The work will cost about Rs 40 crore.
The civic authority has proposed a two-way road on both flanks of the riverfront. The road on the eastern side will be a continuous link, whereas the one in west will have certain breaks. Said Deputy Municipal Commissioner Dilip Mahajan, “The civic authority will stress on speedy and timely construction of roads. Along with the roads the civic body will lay stormwater drain, too.”
The road on the eastern bank will be crucial as it will ease the traffic problem in the eastern part of city, Capt Mahajan added. Incidentally, the road on the eastern bank will be the city’s first link road connecting Ambedkar Bridge, Vasna and Dafanala in Shahibaug.
The eastern bank road will be 30-metre wide as it will serve as the main link road between southern and northern parts of city. The western bank road will be 24-metre wide. Civic officials expect the roads to give a big fillip to development of areas adjacent to the riverbanks.
The corporation will do streetscaping of the entire stretch which will also have a walkway, cycle track, street furniture and parking lots. Apart from this, a continuous corridor in form of promenades has been proposed on the riverfront. The width of promenades will vary from 5 metres to 17 metres.
The riverfront will be walkable for the people in December, according to official projections.
The article is from about a month ago, so hopefully the roadwork is all in full swing. In more general terms, roll on December!
GJ10 May 16th, 2010, 02:11 PM A walkers paradise soon in Ahmedabad (http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_a-walkers-paradise-soon-in-ahmedabad_1383650)
You will soon find a shining stone floor, trees, wooden benches and steel railing along the river when you go for a walk on wide promenades on the Sabarmati riverfront project. In a board meeting of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) recently, work tenders to construct 6 km of model stretches on the east and west banks of the Sabarmati River were allotted.
The SRFDCL board gave its nod to the construction of a section on the model stretch developed on the east bank near Subhash Bridge. The 3 kms of stretch on the east and west bank of the river include Dudheshwar to Gandhi Bridge on the east, and Gandhi Bridge to Sardar Bridge on the west.
The SRFDCL officials say, the work on the 6 kms of stretch is expected to be commissioned soon and should be completed by December this year. "The work includes giving finishing touches to the promenades -- with shining stone flooring, railing near the river for people's safety, street furniture like benches so that people can relax while taking a stroll," said the official.
The move also aims to develop stretches and keep it open for public so that feedback on the planning can be taken, if it requires any changes from the point of view of public amenities.
Meanwhile, work on construction of road on the reclaimed land of the project has also started. Once the roads are completed, they would give denizens connectivity from Astodia to Shahibaug Dafnala in 10 minutes, if claims by the officials are anything to go by.
The SRFDCL bosses decided to come up with a 30m wide road on the eastern side of the river and 24m wide road on the western bank on 11 kms along the Sabarmati River. Around 46.45 hectares land (of total 162 hectares reclaimed land) will be used to develop the roads.
Officials said they also plan to start work of setting up gardens on the river bank simultaneously with the construction of the roads. Around 42.80 hectares of reclaimed land will be used to add green lungs to the city by developing gardens. The entire project is expected to be completed by March 2011.

Pricey Sabarmati Riverfront lures realtors (http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_pricey-sabarmati-riverfront-lures-realtors_1383980)
Realtors in Ahmedabad appear quite confident of the success of upcoming commercial projects to be set up on the Sarbarmati Riverfront, with indications of higher land prices doing little to dent their optimism.
In case the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL), the special vehicle floated by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, decides to reduce the land parcel for auction, upset prices for the plots are likely to go up. Taking into account the company's plan to recover the project's cost from the auction of the land, the price is likely to be in the range of Rs70,000 to Rs1 lakh per square yard.
However, realtors believe that SRFDCL is a one-of-its-kind project in India and has the potential to attract national and even international real estate developers. The project is centrally located in the city, and is hence fit for both residential and commercial kinds of projects. "The riverfront is suitable for hospitality, health, office and residential projects," said Vijay Shah, a city-based realtor.
Moreover, developers are also of the opinion that the real estate scenario in the city has changed in the last five years and market prices are going up with every passing day. Office premises on Ashram Road are quoted in the range of Rs3200 to Rs4000 per square feet. So the sentiment is that people will not hesitate to pay Rs6500 to Rs7,000 per square feet for the riverfront area. Some players were also of the opinion that the area is well-suited for corporate offices.
"The market is moving upwards, so the land on the riverfront can get a good deal," said Yogesh Bhavsar, vice president of Gujarat Institute of Housing and Estate Developers (GIHED). He also said that the floor space index (FSI) allowed on the riverfront will be a major factor in deciding ultimate prices.
Shah said that it will be good if the SRFDCL reduces the land parcel for the auction, to allow construction and allot more space to the general public. He said that the 'jantri' rates have gone up, so the civic body could get the same amount by selling less land.
Besides, the realtors also expect the civic body to fulfil its promises. "If the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) implements its project exactly as it was conceived and provides all the amenities, realtors will not mind paying a little more," said Rajesh Bramhbhatt, managing director of Safal Constructions Pvt Ltd.

viedumonde June 17th, 2010, 09:48 AM Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to market riverfront after monsoon
Quite a bit of activity will be witnessed at the Sabarmati riverfront this monsoon. Not only will the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) start tree plantations on reclaimed land and complete civil work, but they will also be busy chalking out plans to market the country's first riverfront project.
Municipal commissioner and chairman of SRFDCL, IP Gautam, said that in a meeting on the riverfront project on Wednesday, they discussed the possibility of commencing the marketing process of the Sabarmati riverfront project across the country.
"During the last spell of rain, we also checked interceptors, as they are almost ready on the western bank. Moreover, pumping stations are also almost ready. Work on roads and other civic amenities will be completed by December," said Gautam.
Gautam said that currently, sewage continues to flow into the Sabarmati river, but in the coming months, once the interceptors are completely ready and the pumping stations start, water in the river will be clean.
Shifting of hutments from the riverbank has also started, as around 2500 houses have been allotted to the affected people.
GJ10 July 21st, 2010, 02:16 PM Get set for smooth sailing along Sabarmati
TOI epaper 18/07/10
It will be a roller coaster ride along the banks of the Sabarmati, but one without a hitch. Minus the traffic and its irritating snarls, like the ones experienced on Ashram road, you would have a string of underpasses to help you skip busy intersections. As per the plan, there would be at least six such underpasses on both sides of the river banks.
More importantly, engineers of Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) also have a 500-metre-long tunnel on the drawing board, designed for smooth traffic flow between Nehru Bridge and Ellisbridge on the east bank of the river. "The curvature of the tunnel is being worked out. The tunnel is designed in such a manner that it will do away with two underpasses on the east bank," said AMC sources.
On the western side of the river, the underpasses will be constructed at Subhash Bridge, Gandhi Bridge and Sardar Bridge, while on the Eastern side, they will come up at Dudheshwar Bridge, Gandhi Bridge and Sardar Bridge.
Municipal commissioner IP Gautam said, "The main idea is to decongest the traffic on the main road and provide access to people to enjoy the riverfront. The roads will run parallel to Ashram Road on the west side and Khanpur road on east side of the river. The underpasses will ensure a smooth traffic flow free of hitches."
This is part of the new plan which emphasises on better road network, a nine-km-long fourlane wide road, the 'East River Drive', along the eastern bank, and a four-lane stretch, 'West River Drive', on the other side. SRFDCL will be spending Rs 24 crore on the construction work and it is expected to be completed within nine months of the commencement of the work.
On the access points to the road on the rivefront, the sources said, "From the entry points at Ashram Road cross-roads, Ellisbridge, and from Gandhi Bridge, other options are also in stages of discussion. We have already hired a consulting agency to study the project for identifying additional access points to the riverfront." The ambitious project will boost realty by reclaiming land along both banks of the river, constricting the waterway to ensure that the river is returned to the people. It promises to retain the essence of the activity and livelihood around the river by making ghats, informal markets, public spaces, homes for the economically weaker sections besides swanky offices and business spaces. Recently, AMC authorities had selected Vasna barrage at the riverfront for the upcoming iconic 82-feet steel tower.
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/8776/underpass.jpg
viedumonde July 21st, 2010, 02:57 PM There is a potential to make a full fledged Interchange rather than a simple underbridge, at atleast 3 of the intersections. This will make the East River Drive and the West River Drive as spinal motorways, which can further be connected to the NE 1 all the way to Vadodara to the south, and to the Gandhinagar road and NH 8 in the north, via Airport.
If the traffic burgeons, they can make both the motorways one way, so that there will be 4 lanes in each direction, albeit 500 metre apart.
GJ10 July 21st, 2010, 03:26 PM Yeah... or alternatively the option will still be there to make some of the better integrated bridges one way (ideally quite far apart), thus hopefully reducing the traffic load wishing to exit at the more inconvenient bridges by encouraging flow along the riverside.
Whichever way, Ive developed a fair bit of faith in the AMC/SRFDCL and CEPT. Am really looking forward to seeing what Ahmedabad looks like in a year - 2yrs time.
Now that all the retaining walls have been built, its time for the more exciting stuff, from the few pics we have of the finished sections, the future is looking really good for Ahmedabad and Amdavadis!

Meeeet July 26th, 2010, 06:04 PM Riverfront to have cycle tracks
AHMEDABAD: It is a different story that cycle tracks did no good for the BRTS system as they lie unused along the 55-kilometre corridor. There is however a sliver lining for the Sabarmati riverfront where the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) has woven in a paver block cycle track. The track would be the closest to the river followed by the pedestrian pathway.
It will run along the road on the seven-km-long stretch between Usmanpura and Sardar Bridge. The work will cost a little over Rs 40 crore.
The plan includes landscaping of an entire stretch which will have street furniture and parking lots. Apart from this, a continuous corridor in the form of promenades has been proposed on the riverfront. The width of the promenades will vary from five metres to 17 metres. The civic authority has proposed a two-way road on both flanks of the riverfront. The road on the eastern side will be a continuous link, whereas the one in the west will have some breaks. The road on the eastern bank will be the city's first link road connecting Ambedkar Bridge, Vasna and Dafanala in Shahibaug.
The eastern bank road will be 30 metres wide as it will serve as the main link road between southern and northern parts of city. The western bank road will be 24-metre wide.

nikitshah July 31st, 2010, 09:27 PM hey GJ10
can you let us know when were these pics taken?
and anymore pics will be appreciated
Thanks
GJ10 July 31st, 2010, 09:58 PM All I can tell you is that the first one was uploaded onto flickr on 30/07/10 and the second one on 26/07/10. Obviously could have been earlier.
As per the schedule announced here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=56989191&postcount=34), its the model section near Subhash Bridge (east), is the one that already looks nearly finished in the pics.
Still a long time before we can tell if the other areas will be ready for the December deadline, but encouragingly, it seems as though more Amdavadis are uploading pics of the Sabarmati Riverfront area as it all starts to take shape, so hopefully, there should be more pics available soon!

aks_sky August 5th, 2010, 01:03 PM The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation (SRFDCL) will soon invite global bids for the 15 per cent reclaimed land reserved for commercial purposes within six months, according to urban development department officials. SRFDCL had earlier submitted a detailed report few weeks ago to the department for marketing purposes ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat 2011 global investors summit. “At least three sample stretches are being readied for the purpose on the riverfront. We would like to show our investors how the project would shape up with sample gardens and landscaping,” says a senior SRFDCL official.
A team of urban development department is already planning visits to Europe and other potential investor areas in the coming weeks. “We have just 15 per cent left of 32 hectare of reclaimed land that was originally reserved for commercial purposes. We want the best names to come and invest on the riverfront. The skyline on the riverfront is still open ended as we would be able to gauge through the demands of potential investors as to what they desire,” says a senior urban development department official.
This would mean bad news for local developers, who have been salivating at the thought of sinking their teeth into the juiciest bit of realty in town. Back in 2006, biggies like Unitech, DLF, Rahejas and Emaar were approached with similar proposition. It was during this time that the SRFDCL planned to invite global bids for the first time, but pulled back.
What will make the project particularly viable for global and national players is the building of skyscrapers, especially in the central business district (CBD) proposed between the Nehru Bridge and the Gandhi Bridge.

The Patel August 13th, 2010, 01:49 AM :banana:This Sabarmati River Front project is shaping up very nicely. I am sure Modi is the first CM that has built so many projects not just for industrial purposes but also for recreational usage. Our Kings use to build parks, library, courts etc and then nothing was built till now.
rajugentleman80 August 16th, 2010, 11:26 PM The river they now tell me had been drained dry. Cattle grazed on its bed, kids played cricket, it was a waste land almost. Waters from the Narmada river have been diverted into the Sabarmati River and it is now full. The building of the Narmada Dam having to play a part in this. But alongside on the banks of the river, the government develops the embankment area, with gardens and shops and restaurants, to become an area for entertainment and public usage. A massive project, but well thought out.

aks_sky August 18th, 2010, 12:38 PM Hey guys this is a video from a Gujarati news channel. I will try translate as much as i can but some of the words are really pure which i dont think i know since i mostly talk slang. :ohno: But never the less i will try my best.
nRB_Icbarew
In megacity Ahmedabad, at the banks of river Sabarmati there is a glimpse of Singapore taking shape.
In the Sabarmati Riverfront project, 200 acre of land or 77 hectares of land is used for planting different plants/trees/vegetation.
AMC (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation) Commissioner : I P Gautam - The development is taking place in 200 hectares of land and out of that about 38% will be developed into parks and gardens in which there will be lakhs of plants and trees.
The riverfront project is taking place at the banks of the river Sabarmati at approx 10km in length.
38% of land on both sides of the banks will be again used for some sort of urban forest which is going to be developed by architects and Urban forestry.
The forest/garden will be built between Subhash bridge to Dudheshwar bridge, approx 62030 sq km. and also another public garden will be built between Gandhi bridge and Nehru bridge which will be about 32190 sq km.
From NEhru bridge to Ellis bridge they will build a heritage park which will consist of 19485 sq km of land.
From Vasna Barrage to Ambedkar bridge they will build an Urban Forest which will be about 98361 sq km.
From Gandhi bridge to Usmanpura they will make another public garden which will be about 18365 sq km.
Again AMC commissioner talks about the same things i mentioned above.
Due to the development of this riverfront, the area will be much more beautiful and there will be significant decrease in pollution.

Hope that helps people who dont know Gujarati. Tried my best hehe.
Biggest garden on riverfront to offer walk down history lane (Biggest garden on riverfront to offer walk down history lane)
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is ready with the layout of the biggest public garden to come up at the riverfront. The garden will be spread over 62,030 sq metre between Subhash Bridge and Dudheshwar Bridge. This will be on the riverbank opposite to the bank on which the Ashram is located.
A cable car connecting the garden to Gandhi Ashram has also been proposed by the authorities. The garden will have features like a canopy, sundial, stone posts with details like important dates and events in Gujarat’s history to name a few.
A source in AMC said: “The stone posts in the garden will provide insights into the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi. A walk through the garden will be symbolic of a walk down the lanes of history.”
The AMC will be using 37 per cent of the riverfront for gardens and urban forestry, thereby increasing the green patch of the city by 7.70 lakh square metred.
The authorities say that a 2.8-square metre area near Vasna barrage will be developed as a major recreation centre. This will have an urban forest, a public park and a revolving tower.
An urban forest spread over 98,361 square metre and a public garden of around 59,462 square metre will be developed between Vasna barrage and Ambedkar bridge.
A source said: “Plantation in urban forest will be dense. This will include species that can attract more birds.” A heritage park, spread over 19,485 square metre, will come up between Nehru Bridge and Ellis Bridge.
Lush green zones:
On eastern bank
Subhashbridge to Dudheshwar bridge: Public garden (62,030 sqm) Gandhi Bridge to Nehru bridge: Public garden (32,190 sqm) Nehru Bridge to Ellis Bridge: Heritage Park (19,485 sqm)

Aquatic plants to beautify riverfront (http://www.ahmedabadmirror.com/article/3/2010081920100819023731994a25d77ae/Aquatic-plants-to-beautify-riverfront.html)
Now, aquatic plants will add to the beauty and serenity of Sabarmati riverfront. The plants are part of the proposed urban forest to come up in the 98,361 square metre area. The AMC is planning to develop a water body near Vasna barrage that will house aquatic flora species.
Besides adding to the beauty of the surroundings, these plants also aid in water purification and remove nutrients that encourage the growth of green algae. Said an official: “The riverfront project, on the whole, aims at environment conservation. The idea of the project is sustainable development. The urban forest area will be rich in flora biodiversity.”
The forest will also have more than 50 species of trees found across the state including peeludi and desi baval. “The area will serve as shelter for birds like sparrows that are rarely seen in the city,” he said. Specific blocks will be allotted to these species.
An official said, “We are working on the detailed plantation design. The aquatic species will also be finalised very soon. We have received few proposals for the site.” A makeshift structure to be built here will serve as information and convention centre.
A track will also be developed inside urban forest area. An official said, “Only pedestrians will be allowed inside this area as the purpose is to preserve the ecosystem.”

GJ10 August 19th, 2010, 03:38 PM And another piece, from here (http://20twentytwo.blogspot.com/2010/08/sabarmati-riverfront-snippets.html), but probably originally from TOI
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/8899/sabarmati.jpg (http://img838.imageshack.us/i/sabarmati.jpg/)
The Sabarmati riverfront could well become Ahmedabad’s much needed green lung with officials deciding to set aside almost 40 per cent of land on the banks for gardens.
The Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) unfolded plans to develop around 200 acres as gardens all along the project. Ahmedabad municipal commissioner IP Gautam said, “SRFDCL had dedicated 37 per cent land for green purposes.
These theme-based parks and gardens have been designed by a panel of experts entrusted with the task of creating innovative designs. Plantation has already started on some stretches. There will lakhs of trees and more than 100 varieties.”
City-based urban forestry expert Lavkumar Khachar has also been instrumental in designing the green spaces. A major attraction will be an ecological park spread across 1.58 lakh square metres. “The park will come up near Vasna Barrage. Visitors will also get a chance to walk through a thick forest area to the iconic moving tower which will be constructed in the periphery of the barrage,” Gautam added.
They also seem to have reserved an official site for the Riverfront (as opposed to the Riverfront Development Company which already has a site), nothing there yet really, but I guess it'll be one to keep an eye on in future.

desiguy66 August 19th, 2010, 06:33 PM this fantastic news and a great project. however is there any plan to clean up the river? or make not smell terrible?
aks_sky August 22nd, 2010, 10:24 AM There is a pic of an area at the Riverfront in the DNA e-paper which has been developed and it looks like it is going quite well.
http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/8035/riverfront.jpg
(**cant get the image of the e-paper for some reason so had to print scrn it.. Maybe someone can enlighten me on how to do it.)
Folklore goes that a poor old woman requested Minaldevi, mother of Solanki ruler Siddharaj Jaysinh, not to remove her hut in the pursuit to develop a lake. This was towards the end of the 11th century, and the lake was called Malav Talav. Minal Devi compromised on the original design of the lake in order to save the old woman's hut. Till date, Malva Talav is also often referred to as the pond of justice.
In 2010, a couple requests the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to change the seating arrangements on the promenades of the riverfront model on the east bank, near Subhash bridge. They say they wish to enjoy the beauty of the Sabarmati river, and be able to enjoy each other's company undisturbed. Municipal Commissioner IP Gautam compromises on the original plan, and instructs that the seating be altered, in order to give priority to the citizens' demands.
It seems modern Ahmedabad has learnt some lessons from ancient Gujarat. The AMC's Sabarmati riverfront project, which has caused thousands of huts on the riverbank to be relocated and vendors uprooted, can in no way be called a 'project of justice'. However, it may go down as urban Ahmedabad's first inclusive project, where ideas put forth by citizens are being considered.
The AMC is sparing a thought for citizens' suggestions, in order to include them in the original design and improve facilities given to them. The civic body has readied the model stretch on the eastern river bank near Subhash bridge, to give residents an idea of how the area will look when the project is completed, and to get feedback about the facilities.
Gautam said that since April this year, when the stretch was opened, they have been receiving suggestions from people who visit the area.

GJ10 August 29th, 2010, 02:27 PM Ahmedabads Ravivari Bazaar to open with new avatar (http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_ahmedabad-s-ravivari-bazaar-to-open-with-new-avatar_1430239)
Shopping for antique pieces and second-hand books from Ravivari is all set to be an organised experience. No more vehicular traffic jams on the main road or overflowing drainage lines and sufferings of elbow-hits from fellow shoppers, owing to congested lanes of Ravivari bazaar. Sometime soon, on reaching Ravivari Bazaar, you would get designated parking space and browse through specially designed areas for vendors to find your antique pieces, second-hand books or furniture!
Your shopping experience is sure to double when you learn that, the new open shopping plaza at Ravivari would have the city's heritage, Fort Wall as a back drop and be situated just behind landmark, Gaikwad Haveli. Finally, after much furore of uprooting hundreds of vendors who survived on the Ravivari bazaar, also known as Ravivari or Gujari Bazaar, which was traditionally operational on the riverbed near Ellisbridge, has got a new home, not far from its traditional area, on the Sabarmati riverbed. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) has decided to house Ravivari in a plot spread across 32,000 square metres behind Gaikwad Haveli, between Ellisbridge and Sardar bridge.
"The new Ravivari market would spread across a wider area than it currently has. Currently, denizens can shop from Ravivari, an informal market, only once a week. But the specially designated area would have provisions to run the informal market throughout the week. Against the popular notion, that SRFDCL would uproot hundreds of vendors and snatch away their bread and butter, we would provide a bigger area to accommodate more number of vendors than its current capacity," director of SRFDCL and MP, Surendra Patel told DNA.
Importantly, SRFDCL has kept provisions of allotting around 16,500 square metres of space to park atleast 3,000 two-wheelers on either sides of the market. The open market would also have drinking water facility, wash rooms, information kiosks and comfortable seating.
The market has been designed to be used as a multi-purpose space, accommodating vendors on Sunday and seasonal markets and other kinds of organised vending facilities on a day-to-day basis. The open air market will also have trade fair facilities, separate service lane to avoid congestion and a clear demarcated pedestrian space. The market located near the Fort Wall will also give access to lower promenades, with stairs down to the Sabarmati River.

AHMEDABAD: Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) will go for global bidding after November this year when basic utilities like roads and underground cable utility and civic pipeline chambers are put in place, according to urban development sources.
On Saturday, SRFDCL officially declared the masterplan as complete and had sent it to the UDD for principal approval. However, a major task will be taking an approval from the union ministry of civil aviation for building heights as tall buildings will don the riverfront skyline.
"Our focus will be global investors as we feel we will be able to cater to their demands for the same global bidding post November as some of the civic works will be completed by then.
Back in 2006, biggies like Unitech, DLF, Rahejas and Emaar were approached with similar proposition. It was during this time that the SRFDCL planned to invite global bids for the first time, but pulled back.
What will make the project particularly viable for global and national players is the building of skyscrapers, especially in the central business district (CBD) proposed between the Nehru Bridge and Gandhi Bridge.

AHMEDABAD: Take a cursory glance at the re-development plan prepared for the riverfront and you will be taken aback by the curious shapes of commercial plots to be put on sale. These shapes are to ensure a definite skyline and shapes of buildings which will come up along the riverfront.
SRFDCL sources confirm that a new development control regulation (DCR) customised for the riverfront has already been submitted to the state government along with foot print of the buildings. This set of regulations will be different from the one existing for the city.
The saleable built-up area on the riverfront will be calculated as a multiple of the area of the footprint and the number of floors assigned to each of the plot shape. The concept of margin space will be completely eliminated from the design as there will be no compound walls encircling the buildings mainly to save public space. The owner of a building will have a slot for parking within the premises and there will be public parking spaces.
"The height of some of the buildings is being kept up to 150 meters it could be less depending on demand. Each plot shape that will define the shape of building coming up on it has been assigned a certain number of floors. This will prevent the developer from backtracking on the commitment made to SRFDCL," said a senior SRFDCL official.
These shapes are anywhere from a circle to quadrilateral and squares and rectangles. "Any riverfront around the globe has a signature skyline and we want to ensure that Sabarmati has one. There is more emphasis on open spaces," added the official.
"After extensive travelling to European countries and some south east Asian countries, we wanted to emulate some river redevelopment plans in our city. Sabarmati deserves this plan," added another SRFDCL official.

Boat ride in river Sabarmati will become reality tomorrow, when Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation appointed contractor Amrapali will start ferry service between Subhash bridge and Gandhi bridge.
The ferry service will be operated from river front location near Darpana in Usmanpura area. A wooden platform has been set up.
The contractor is all set to launch the service on Wednesday, a day before Shraddh period begins. Shraddh period is not considered good to start any new task.
The boat ride service will initially begin with simpler power boats, but later on there are plans to initiate water scooter and water sports facility as well.
Not only this, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has planned to start a water transportation facility between Shahibag and Vasna area that fall on the bank of river Sabarmati. In the waters of Sabarmati river, there’s no cross road, signal or traffic, which will provide smoother and faster journey to commuters, compare to busy parallel Ashram road.
The grand Sabarmati river front project is taking time, but once completed, the river Sabarmati, once dry sandy ground, will prove another vibrant place of vibrant Gujarat.

The vessels can be boarded at the riverbank behind Darpana Academy in Usmanpura. The charge for a ride in the motorboats will be Rs10 per person. The officials said that Shikara boats will arrive by Thursday and their service, too, will begin within a few days. "Gradually, we will also buy gondolas, water-scooters and other vessels used in water sports," said an official of the service provider.

Works seems to be progressing well. Look at those stairs. I wonder if they are also going to provide handicap access (wheelchair path) for people who cannot climb stairs. It will be also good for people who want to bike (bicycle) or skate along the riverfront.
surreal75 December 5th, 2010, 09:38 AM BTW, the water level looks quite close to the platform. Would it survive the rise in the water level during monsoons? Also, I wonder how far back in the history have they looked for the max water level (10 years 50 years, 100 years) to come up with the height of the platform.

I dont have the exact numbers but as far as I know most of the water coming into the Sabarmati @ Ahmedabad is from narmada. During monsoons if the water level gets too high they can open up the vasna barrage to let the water flow. So it shouldnt be a problem unless they experience very heavy floods which they have never seen before. :)
surreal75 December 5th, 2010, 07:04 PM ^^^ You may be right but I do hope though that the design is based on hard science rather than assumptions.
GJ10 December 5th, 2010, 07:47 PM Originally posted in the Ahmedabad projects thread, before SRF had its own thread, prob a good time to repost here, almost as an FAQ.
Ongoing, unfinished work has survived one monsoon since this post was first written.
In general, the Sabarmati River actually needs a lot of help to have the level of water you see in the pics anyway
Water currently gets diverted from the Narmada Canal into the river and is retained by a Barge at Vasna, towards the south of the City, keeping a minimum level of water in the Sabarmati as it passes through Ahmedabad
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/1814/rivernorain.png
During normal monsoon, simply closing stopping the Water from the Narmada Canal and allowing the Vasna barge to let water pass more readily should be enough to avoid flooding of the Riverfront.

No. I was looking at the power house shown behind. That is why I thought from which angle they have taken picture.
But anyway, In India impressions are always different than delivered picture. Exception could be Kakaria lake.
And ya my mistake. From different angle it would be different. Reason is that I live on that side from where this impression is totally opposite.

aks_sky February 22nd, 2011, 02:33 AM City to get back its fort wall (http://www.ahmedabadmirror.com/article/3/201102222011022203320373485fda83c/City-to-get-back-its-fort-wall.html)
The Walled City, will soon get its wall back. As part of the Sabarmati Riverfront project, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is planning to restore the city wall on the eastern banks of the river. It will form the backdrop of the heritage garden coming up between Ellis Bridge and Nehru Bridge.
There will be a recreation space in the foreground. A top AMC official said, “The city wall will circle the heritage park from Ellis Bridge and Nehru Bridge. The park will also include the Manek Burj (The site where the foundation stone of Ahmedabad was laid by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411). The park is spread over an area of 1.32 hectares.”
SPACE for amphitheatre
According to the official, there is scope to build an amphitheatre on the premises, but the authorities are still working on its design. The official said, “The idea behind the park is to create an ambience where people can come with their family and relax. The city wall will make the place picturesque. Several trees will also be planted along the wall.”
The Mssonuments like the historical Ganesh Bari (a doorway through the fortress wall made by Appaji Ganesh in 1779 during the Maratha rule) and the boundary wall encircling old Ahmedabad for years together, today lies in a shambles alongside Ellis Bridge.
These historic monuments will get a facelift once the heritage park is built. Moreover, a walkway will connect the park to the Bhadra fort campus.
Ahmedabad’s living heritage, the Sunday market, fondly known as Gujari Bazaar or Ravivari, will be getting bigger and better on riverfront. Civic officials will put equal stress on the development of Ravivari as other things on the riverfront. An official said, “It will be an aesthetically designed informal market.” The civic authority will provide more than 32,000 square yards of land between Ellis Bridge and Sardar bridge for the relocation of the bazaar.
The current narrow pathswill be replaced by much wider lanes with street furniture. It will also be a cleaner place as the drainage water pipeslines will be covered by concrete road.

Ahmedabad has taken a leaf from Chicago’s river front. The civic authority has planned a “cultural mile” on the Sabarmati river front with numerous facilities that will make it the cultural nerve centre of the city.
The proposed Sabarmati cultural mile will come up between Sardar bridge and Vivekanand bridge on the western bank of the river. While an artist’s impression has been creates, the civic authority will begin work on designing it very soon.
Said an official, “We will be working on the design and details of the cultural mile very soon. The area has already been identified for it.” The proposed site will be next to Sanskar Kendra that houses city museum and Tagore Hall. AMC has already planned a facelift of the campus housing the two facilities which are considered the city’s cultural centre.
The cultural mile will have museums, exhibition centres, dancing floor, theatre, amphitheatre, galleries, concert halls, etc, said the official. “This will give Ahmedabad a huge area to carry out cultural events.”
Chicago cultural mile
The Chicago cultural mile stretches from the Chicago River along Michigan Avenue through the Museum Campus at the south end of Grant Park. This is home to Millennium Park, Art Institute of Chicago, Symphony Hall — Chicago Symphony Orchestra performs here, urban college campuses, aquarium and planetarium. The Cultural Mile’s historic street wall, also known as Chicago’s Front Door, overlooks Chicago’s lakefront and Millennium and Grant Parks.

The concrete jungle of Ahmedabad is turning into a city of gardens. The civic body is building a 62,030 sq m garden at the Sabarmati riverfront between Subhash Bridge and Dudheshwar Bridge at a cost of Rs 16 crore.
The garden — the largest and the costliest public park in the city — will be ready in six months. Currently, the two biggest gardens in the city are Sardarbaug garden near the Siddi Syed Mosque and Hajipura garden at Madhupura. These are spread over an area of 40,000 sq m.
Giving details about the project, an official of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said, “The garden will be developed on the eastern side of the riverfront. Our workers are already digging the area and planting saplings of native trees like gulmohar, neem, garmalo, ficus and decorative shrubs.”

India101 April 16th, 2011, 04:19 AM Wait till May for water sports, floating restaurant in Ahmedabad (http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_wait-till-may-for-water-sports-floating-restaurant-in-ahmedabad_1526977)
May is likely to be a happening month for the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL). To begin with, Essel Infrastructure is likely to start the first phase of operations for its water park in May.
Then, the new General Development Control Regulation (GDCR) for the Sabarmati River Front may be declared in the same month and finally, the much talked about floating restaurant may also start operating in a couple of months.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), during the fifth edition of Vibrant Gujarat with Zee Group's Essel Infrastructure for setting up a water park. The company intends to invest around Rs200 crore in the project.
Municipal commissioner IP Gautam said that the company has a back-to-back arrangement with another company in Singapore and they will complete their detailed project report by April. "We want to start water sports in the Sabarmati within the Swarnim Year," said Gautam.
The water park is likely to come up between Sardar Patel Bridge and Vasna Barrage because of wider river area and deeper water level. The company will have to arrange safety boats at a minimum of five points in the area, he said.
Gautam also said that water level in the Sabarmati is low and is expected to decrease in the coming month because of dam repair work that is to be carried out by the state government's irrigation department. "The new water supply will come by May," he said.
He also stated that a new GDCR, specially designed for the Sabarmati River Front, is likely to be issued in May. "The preparation for formation of the GDCR has been completed," said Gautam. However, he declined to reveal the information about land prices quoted in the auction of land for commercial purpose on the riverfront.
Meanwhile, the civic body is examining proposals for floating restaurants. Two companies had signed MoUs with AMC for starting floating restaurants at the Sabarmati River Front.
Meanwhile there is some bad news too as the civic body hasn't received any tenders for cable cars. The AMC will re-invite tenders for operating cable cars over the Sabarmati.

Cosmicbliss May 18th, 2011, 04:27 PM http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_gujarat-s-riverfront-project-getting-dearer-by-the-day_1544350
The highly ambitious urban development project of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Sabarmati Riverfront is getting dearer with every passing day. The project cost has increased by 53% in seven years.
The Congress alleged that the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Ltd (SRFDCL) has been treated as a private company and development work is carried out at the cost of the poor.
The opposition walked out of the SRFDCL board meeting in protest on Monday on this score.
The Congress alleged that in 2003 chief minister Narendra Modi had announced that the project would be completed in 1000 days. The work is still incomplete and the delay has increased the cost.
The original project cost, estimated in 2003 at Rs750 crore, is now pegged Rs1152 crore, said Badruddin Shaikh, leader of opposition in the AMC. He also claimed that earth filling work that was pegged at Rs25 crore in 2003 has reached Rs45 crore now.
The SRFDCL has obtained Rs350 crore as loan from HUDCO, Rs240 crore from AMC as share capital and Rs180 crore from AMC as loan.
The company has spent Rs760 crore on the development work till now, said Shaikh. He also said that HUDCO had sanctioned Rs550 crore loan but the SRFDCL could get only Rs350 crore disbursement.
aThe Congress alleged that the administration and the ruling party were not worried about the delay till now. In seven years, work of the diaphragm wall has been completed, while work for construction of retaining wall and earth filling is going on. “Only 85% of retaining wall is complete,” said Shaikh.
The opposition alleged that the administration has awoken all of a sudden and wants to expedite the project at the cost of the poor. He also said that alternate arrangement given by the AMC is faulty.
“The civic body has allotted houses to handicapped people on the third floor. Moreover, it has failed to provide enough water to the EWS houses built in Vatva,” said Shaikh.
The Congress apprehends that project cost will increase much more in coming days and has demanded that a white paper must be issued. Shaikh also alleged that the contractor has used inferior quality GRP pipes for drainage network on the riverfront and demanded that an inquiry committee should be formed to look into the matter.

Gujarat high court comes to slum-dwellers’ rescue, stays demolitions
A demolition drive launched by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to remove slums along the Sabarmati riverfront suffered a setback on Friday when the Gujarat high court bench stayed further demolitions.
More than 300 people living in the slums on the Sabarmati riverfront rushed to the high court when the civic body began razing their houses.
At the request of the leaders of the slum-dwellers, chief justice SJ Mukhopadhya, who had concluded his day's work, called the leaders and their lawyers for an urgent hearing in his chamber.
After a preliminary hearing of the case, the bench of chief justice Mukhopadhya and justice JB Pardiwala stayed the demolitions and adjourned the case till June 13.
Manoj Shrimali, counsel for the slum-dwellers, submitted before the bench that the high court had earlier granted a stay order on any demolition of slums that was undertaken without providing the slum-dwellers an alternative place of residence.
The Rehabilitation Committee, which is working under retired high court judge DP Buch, is also not taking effective steps for the rehabilitation of the slum-dwellers, Shrimali said.
In 2005, advocate Girish Patel had filed a petition seeking alternative residence for slum-dwellers who had become a victim of the demolition drive. The high court had then stayed all such demolitions.
“We approached the high court as the AMC had started demolishing our houses. We are happy that the chief justice has given us relief,” said Bina Jadhav of Rahethan Adhikar Manch.

But in saying so the progress with the roads is excellent compared to what i saw in jan.

Reclaiming land from Riverbed, creation of retaining wall, and filling in/levelling of reclaimed land were always going to be the most technically difficult aspects of this project. Most of this work you can probably appreciate was done by end of 2008 even.
Sticking point now is the slums on the Eastbank (top/middle of pictures), land auction to private developers that was meant to be done by November 2010 cannot be done until these slums are gone.
Fact that Anna Hazare was given a guided tour of the area by "eminent danseuse" Mallika Sarabhai and a squad of other activists is def not a good sign...
India101 July 6th, 2011, 10:17 AM 10K families moved from riverfront to get flats by Aug end (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad/10K-families-moved-from-riverfront-to-get-flats-by-Aug-end/articleshow/9119730.cms)
AHMEDABAD: By August end, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will have to provide two-rooms flats to 10,283 families that need to be relocated from the Sabarmati banks. The Gujarat high court on Tuesday ordered the civic body to provide the alternate houses in form of flats to more than 10,000 families.
All families that had settled on either side of the Sabarmati river before December 31, 2007, will get flats in four-storied buildings at relocation sites prepared by AMC. Around 15 such relocation sites for the people living on the banks have been prepared as part of Sabarmati river front development project.
When the authorities began evacuating people from the banks in 2005, five petitioners, including Sabarmati Nagarik Adhikar Manch and activist Manishi Jani, approached the high court demanding alternative accommodation for these residents. The high court stayed authorities from removing slum dwellers.
The litigation moved further and on June 24 this year, the high court sought a list of families settled on the river banks. The civic body stated that 5,964 families were living between Subhash Bridge and Vasna Barrage as on May 15, 2002, which was the cut off date set earlier. However, the civic body has passed a resolution extending the cut-off date to 2007 end. The petitioner submitted a list of 4,319 families who were identified as having settled on the banks between 2002 and 2007.
On Tuesday, when a bench headed by Chief Justice S J Mukhopadhaya sought status of relocation, the civic body stated that out of 5964 families identified earlier, 2,166 families have already been shifted to newly prepared flats. The corporation submitted before the court that 4,800 flats more would be constructed by August end, and all the families would be relocated by then. The high court has also directed the residents to shift to new houses within a month of their completion. Upon suggestion of petitioner's counsel Girish Patel, the high court directed the authorities to allot the houses not to an individual, but to get it registered in the name of husband, wife and children jointly. The high court has also asked AMC to ensure that after eviction, the area is fenced properly and no new person comes to settle there.
The court has kept hearing every month to know the status of relocation of slum dwellers. If shifting is completed as per HC directions, this litigation may be over by October end.

Shri Vora said that new walk way is almost ready, and the entire work in 3.5 km stretch will be completed in December.
These patches will be between Subhash bridge and Dadhichi bridge, frm Gandhi bridge to Nehru bridge on western bank, and from Ambedkar bridge to Vasba barrage on western bank.
Mayor Vora said the AMC plans to open these walk ways during Kankaria festival which is scheduled in last week of December.
He said there will be RCC benches, street lights and sufficient parking space for visitors of walk ways.

If it was a question of 2 or 3 kms they could have done something fancy, but this is 23 kms long. They had to keep the design economical. As it is the project cost has multiplied many times.
And, a simple riverfront is way better than having no riverfront :)
Delhi has Yamuna, Kolkata has Hooghly, Mumbai has Mithi, Chennai has Cooum and Adyar. Yet Sabarmati will have the first riverfront in India

Suncity November 12th, 2011, 12:09 AM Delhi has Yamuna, Kolkata has Hooghly, Mumbai has Mithi, Chennai has Cooum and Adyar. Yet Sabarmati will have the first riverfront in India
Not really true. Kolkata already has a river front. One section is nice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byG30QOLV_0). The other section which is older is not so nice. What is true and exciting is that the size of the Sabarmati project is large in scale.
gandhi.rushabh1992 November 12th, 2011, 06:25 AM Yes, it is really nice. Clean and well maintained. But I guess it cannot be classified under a full-fledged riverfront. It is sort of an amusement park along the river.

Food on water may soon be a reality at Sabarmati
Given the average Amdavadi's fondness for food and taste for ambience, the idea of a floating restaurant on Sabarmati should have been grabbed the instant it was floated. Unfortunately, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's special purpose vehicle, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), could not go ahead with the project for lack of acceptable proposals. However, if SRFDCL officials are to be believed, this scenario is soon set to change.
"Earlier, we used to receive proposals where either a single company wanted to open as many as six restaurants, or sought exclusive rights for restaurants on the river. This would have monopolised the business and so it was not possible to go ahead. Now, with fresh proposals on terms suitable to SRFDCL, it may not be long before Amdavadis can dine on the Sabarmati," said executive director of SRFDCL and deputy municipal commissioner Dilip Mahajan.
The water level in the river has ceased to be a concern, with restaurateurs considering the option of anchoring the restaurants on the banks of the river. Mahajan conceded that the companies that have approached AMC with proposals do not see fluctuating water levels in the river as a threat to business anymore. This can be seen from the fact that SRFDCL is receiving multiple offers to set up floating restaurants.
The latest to join the bandwagon is Dharmadev Infrastructure Limited, a local real estate player and well-known business group. SRFDCL chairman and municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra told DNA that they were also studying a proposal to start water sports as part of the project.
"The idea is to introduce water sports, including scooter, fancy boats etc., on the Sabarmati. We are studying a proposal from an agency and would want to start the entertainment facility as soon as possible," he said. If things work out as envisaged, this could happen around the much-awaited Kankaria Carnival in December as AMC also plans to inaugurate parts of walkways along the Sabarmati during the carnival.
They may mean december next year. Never trust AMC. :ohno:

No, I don't think you are asking too much. Making sure that there are ramps for seniors, wheelchairs, strollers etc. is a low hanging fruit and must be provisioned for. No project can be called world class until it has that. Such ramps are everywhere in developed countries.
aks_sky November 21st, 2011, 09:39 AM Well they do have ramps in certain areas but even then if you look at the stairs in the video above you will see that they are not very steep and they have regular breaks. Shouldnt be much of an issue for most people.
Cov Boy November 21st, 2011, 01:27 PM Rs 50 Crores on a heritage park seems a lot of money even though its looks impressive on paper & only on a small stretch.
I dont know how old that video is posted above however the basics need to be finished as well as maintainance & up keep.
GJ10 November 23rd, 2011, 08:55 PM HC refuses to stay slum demolition at riverfront (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad/HC-refuses-to-stay-slum-demolition-at-riverfront/articleshow/10837405.cms)
The slum dwellers from Sabarmati riverbanks did not get any relief from Gujarat high court on Tuesday so far as demolition drive was concerned. AMC has been demolishing hutments for last three days.
A division bench refused to stay civic body's on-going demolition drive on the riverbanks. At the same time, the court instructed AMC to speed up the process of allotment of alternate houses to the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project Ltd affected families.
HC asked 1,112 families, who have already been allotted houses but have not shifted yet, to immediately move to the new houses. When senior counsel Girish Patel raised the issue of want of facilities at the newly-built colonies, HC directed AMC to provide basic amenities there by December 31.
In regards with 1,242 families, whose identification process is over, the court has directed them to furnish required identification proofs before AMC within two weeks.
The civic body was further ordered to complete the process and allot houses to these families within a month. Out of 1,433 families, which were identified by Buch committee as qualifying for rehabilitation, identification process of 682 families is already over.
HC has asked the authority to allot houses to them. In regards with remaining 751 families whose case is under consideration, the directions are to provide them with temporary shelters in open plots at Ganeshpura, Pipalaj and Girdharnagar areas.
Hopefully this will be the end of the delays now
waterguy November 30th, 2011, 10:19 PM Is the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad safe to swim in? Have they cleaned the sewage up and stopped it from coming into the river?
Would you get sick if you injested water from the Sabarmati?
Thank You...
aks_sky December 1st, 2011, 01:40 PM Yea its quite safe to swim in, infact they are planning to oragnise water sports in the river every year. The water does get replaced by fresh narmada water every now and then. And no they have not completely stopped all sewage or waste water flow into the river. That will take some time i guess. And it depends on the person actually if they will get sick or not, a few people tried to kill themselves in the river but got rescued and i havent heard of them being sick.
You are welcome!

City civic authorities have decided to conduct a demolition drive on Sabarmati riverfront as some of the slum dwellers have not yet vacated the project site. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has also sought help from the city police for provide security to its squad.
DCP Zone II officials said that AMC officials approached them on Sunday and submitted a proposal to provide them security for demolition work. The encroachment have been reported in areas coming under Karanj, Gaekwad Haveli and Shahpur areas. Deputy commissioner of police, Zone II, HG Patel confirmed the news and said that police teams will accompany the AMC teams.
Municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said that some of the structures still stand on the proposed construction site for Sabarmati riverfront project despite several notices. "The drive is not aimed at any fresh encroachments but for the structure that did not get removed in the first round of demolition. The sites procured will soon have construction work going on," he said.
GJ10 December 19th, 2011, 07:02 PM Some more recent pics.
Sample stretches will (apparently) be opened to the public sometime this month, hopefully will see some more coverage of the project from that point onwards.

GJ10 December 19th, 2011, 09:57 PM Hard enough to find pics of the riverfront when it looks the way it does now, let alone before the transformation. An old reputation of Ahmedabad that still continues in the minds of many is of a city that is particularly dirty/polluted even by Indian standards. I dont think this is true anymore, but will take many years to shed the image.
Anyway, as I always do, let me use Google Earth to try and answer your question for two of the most advanced parts of the project

maulik02 December 20th, 2011, 06:44 AM I had high hopes from this project. But it looks very ordinary, actually quite subpar. Who designed it?
Ya it's so ordinary that every city with river in India have their riverfront..Very ordinary architect Bernand kohn gave idea of Sabarmati Riverfront..

Rachit_Struc.Engg December 20th, 2011, 08:09 AM I had high hopes from this project. But it looks very ordinary, actually quite subpar. Who designed it?
If it is so much ordinary..why is it that it is the first riverfront project in India?
Look my friend, the design may not look swanky but there is definitely not a single functional aspect that is missing in design or planning. If you had seen the actual river before the front constructed, then would have realized the difference.
Surely Narmada water helped to maintain water level in Sabarmati. But the river rendering work, treatment of sewage before discharge and rehabilitation has helped a lot in making the river look as it looks today - beautiful.
gandhi.rushabh1992 December 20th, 2011, 06:14 PM I had high hopes from this project. But it looks very ordinary, actually quite subpar. Who designed it?
And these figures are way too ordinary, are'nt they?
Originally posted by aks_sky (all figures as on May 2010- so all these figure are bound to have increased by now)
24,400 meters Interceptor Lines
36,20,000 bags of cement/1,81,000 metric tonnes of cement
5,34,500 cubic meters of concrete
12 lakh truckloads / 1.11 crore cubic meters of soil
38,800 metric tonnes of steel
1 lakh square meters of parks and roadside plantations
3,30,000 square metres of diaphragm walls
1,15,000 sq meters of retaining walls
Forty-eight storm water outlets opening into the river
Even many western cities don't have this kind of riverfront. And no other Indian city has even planned such a long riverfront.

Absolutely, I just thought its worth mentioning how this other big project has complemented this one to give the effect that we see currently.
Also, I think its quite easy to forget that the riverfront walkway is only a small% of the overall project.
The vast majority of the project will occur at the top of the "stairs", creating new roads, public spaces as well as commercial/resedential areas on the reclaimed land.
We will surely get good coverage of the project in less than a months time for Uttarayan, with the "Ahmedabad Intl Kite Festival" once again taking place on the Riverfront.
gandhi.rushabh1992 December 21st, 2011, 11:55 AM I could'nt wait till Uttarayan, so I went to the riverfront today . From Ellis bridge to Nehru bridge, here are the pics :-

And to whoever was saying this project looks ordinary take a hike cuz as far as i am concerned, from the photos above this project looks brilliant so far. Once everything is complete and things get "cleaned" it will look like something that you see in a developed country. Besides the small stretch will get cleaned and readied for Uttarayan fest since Namo is visiting.

One thing that I didn't like was the seating along the railings. It is very easy for a toddler to climb up on the seats and jump over the railing into the water.

AHMEDABAD: The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) has issued a work order to rehabilitate the 600-year old Gujari Bazaar. Under the Rs 30-crore project, a separate organized space will be created for the famous flea market of Ahmedabad a few hundred metres away from its present location below Ellisbridge on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river.
There is an interesting twist to the new market location as SRFDCL plans to use the market space as weekday 'Haats' that will sell traditional handicrafts on different days. On Sundays, the market space will be reserved exclusively for the Gujari market members.
SRFDCL officials claim that it is in talks with the Gujari bazaar association members to reach an agreement on the new market location. SRFDCL chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra claimed, "Unlike today's market which is highly unorganized, devoid of walk space and public conveniences and shelters, the new market location will have all these facilities. Besides each stall will have place for displaying wares and enough walking space for visitors to enjoy traditional shopping experience," says Mohapatra.
SRFDCL officials say that though the work order has been issued, the market site on the riverfront is yet to be handed over to the developer. "The developer has been given a time frame of 15 months from the handover of the site. The Rs 30 crore work order has already been issued recently," says a senior SRFDCL official.
The traditional Gujari market has shifted location twice earlier in its 600-year old existence, according to city based historian Rizwan Kadri. Authorities had earlier said they are not relocating Gujari Bazaar but rather pushing it under Sardar Bridge. The market has close to 1,200 members today, according to Gujari association members. "The market is being relocated to a new place which is a few hundred meters from the current location. The spirit of the market will be kept alive," says a senior SRFDCL official.
The association claims that there are close to 10,000 other traders who indirectly get business from the market. More than 20,000 people, including migrant artisans and laborers, are involved in the process of manufacture, transportation, and sale of goods at the market.

AHMEDABAD: While the process of framing development control regulations (DCR) for the ambitious Sabarmati riverfront is in progress, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation (SRFDCL) has decided that once the new proposed regulations are in place, it will approach leading urban planners of the city for their suggestions.
The corporation plans to incorporate their views before sending the proposal to the state urban development department for approval. Once given a go-ahead, the proposed regulations will be placed in public domain for suggestions and objections.
"The riverfront is more of an environmental and river-rejuvenation project than a real estate one. So we are taking care that the new regulations do not come in conflict with basic theme of the riverfront," said a senior SRFDCL official. "The consultative team will consist of eminent town planners in the city who principally look into aspects of urban spaces within the riverfront domain."
The team will advise SRFDCL on issues like building heights, number of floors permitted in each building, the amount of FSI to be allowed for buildings, footprints of buildings and parking space. The special DCR will also mandate earthquake preventive construction.

In this vid that Aks Sky posted earlier, if you pause at 1.40 or 2.32, you can see a couple of glimpses of a ramp. Note that any parts with stairs have walls that also have a stepped appearance, whereas the ramp has a smooth wall at a much more gentle angle.
Amdavadi firm, HCP Design and Project Management were one of the main planners for the project, but Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University in Ahmedabad are practically always involved with AMC projects as well.
Ahmedabad BRTS had features specifically designed for wheelchair-bound/elderly/blind passengers, can rest assured that the Riverfront will do the same.

^^ Rachit said that no design aspect is missed, so can I assume that there are ramps to connect the two level structure, so they are accessible to bicycles, strollers and wheelchairs?
There is always constraint of funds in such kind of projects. In developing country like ours more focus is on providing basic infra rather than spending on such swanky projects. Thus at times one need to compromise on certain aspects (Like they did in BRTS by NOT PROVIDING cycle track at many location because of which it got Silver rating instead of Gold). Thus such ramps are not found. But at places where the level difference is less, cycles or wheel chairs can have direct access.
Instead of criticizing stuff appreciate the fact that a world class river front is actually in making and on verge of completion. Look at the quality of construction that has been implemented and the positives that are coming out because of project.
This will not be any stinking and filthy river of India. This is benchmark for other rivers in India and a challenge to exceed its quality of work.
surreal75 December 26th, 2011, 07:40 PM ^^^ The ramps are really low hanging fruit. They do not require much funds. Especially for a large scale project like this, the money required would amount to rounding error. Maybe it is the question of mindset since this design aspect is not really expected in India. Or maybe it is a question of building codes or whatever codes are applicable in a public park type project like this. I am trying to provide a constructive feedback from the things that I have experienced in developed countries and appreciate (especially the things that I feel requires small change in design and probably not much additional money).
I do understand the enthusiasm behind this project and I appreciate it. One should be proud of this work. One should celebrate the achievements but constructive criticism is a good thing and must be encouraged. It is just to make it shine even better and not really to take away the glory from the project.
GJ10 December 26th, 2011, 08:46 PM Constructive criticsm from ppl who understand the project is one thing.
Wild speculation about features the planners may have missed is something different altogether and should not be encouraged. Esp as it often turns out to be a waste of ppls time by complaining about a problem that doesnt exist and has been covered in earlier pages of the thread (ie Ramps/Water Level)
surreal75 December 27th, 2011, 02:08 AM When I asked a question about ramps, I was not criticizing it, it was a simple question. The question was asked based on the pictures that were posted because it was not clear from them. When someone answered, I simply answered with thanks. Please read my posts before making unnecessary judgement.
GJ10 December 27th, 2011, 02:51 AM No real harm in asking questions, as long as they havent been answered before already.

Just like delhi metro.. nobody cares, unless it is made and shown to them that its working for the good of society, these babus and politicians will never care for these.....
gandhi.rushabh1992 January 14th, 2012, 01:02 PM The riverfront has come alive with the lights. Finally people are walking and talking and experiencing the riverfront. A dream come true for Amdavadis. Nice developement. However a lot of people are sitting on the edge of the wall. A slight push from someone could result in a bad fall to the hard concrete surface below. With this spot being popular amongst the young crowd having a metal or cement backrest would have provided not only a more comfortable seating experience, but would have provided added protection against falls to the hard concrete floor below
gandhi.rushabh1992 January 21st, 2012, 03:42 PM ^^
Well that particular place was not meant for sitting, actually. The land adjoining it will be sold and it will become private property. So this is just temporary.

Yeah, this is Ahmedabad's one and only chance to build a better skyline in the heart of the city. Otherwise all the highrises are being built on the fringes of the city.

aks_sky February 13th, 2012, 01:20 AM AMCshifts riverfront deadline
While the entire nation is looking forward to the completion of India's first riverfront project along river Sabarmati, the civic body is yet to decide the exact date for its inauguration which is pending for the past few months.
The walkway of the riverfront was scheduled to be inaugurated during the Kankaria carnival in December 2011, but it was postponed due to unknown reasons. The walkway between Subhash Bridge and Dadhichi Rishi Bridge on the eastern and the western banks of the river (between Gandhi Bridge and Nehru Bridge and between Ambedkar Bridge and Vasna Barrage) was postponed to January 2012.
However, citizens do not seem to be bothered about the official inauguration of the riverfront as they enjoy evening strolls along the river.
While some of the construction is over and the lower promenade has been constructed, the gardening and civil work on some of the stretches is being carried out.
Crores of rupees have been spent on the construction of Sabarmati riverfront and the work is being completed on different stretches. When DNA asked municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra about the inauguration, he answered that a garden was being developed there currently and the riverfront would be inaugurated once the work was completed. "It will take a few months for the walkway to be inaugurated as we are planning to develop it and inaugurate the whole place," added Mohapatra. He further said that once completed, the walkway and riverfront would be a treat for the eye with clean water of the river and garden nearby. Officials of AMC told DNA that the date for inauguration had not been fixed yet, but it might be during March- April 2012.
Talking about the immediate plans, executive director of Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), Dilip Mahajan said that they were planning to extend a few km nearby the walkway and start water sports at the riverfront. Mayor Asit Vora could not be reached for his comments on the inauguration.

aks_sky February 13th, 2012, 01:21 AM Riverfront to stretch up to Karai
(http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad/Riverfront-to-stretch-up-to-Karai/articleshow/11865795.cms)
AHMEDABAD: The riverfront is all set to stretch way beyond the bustling parts of the city. The Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) plans to double its length from the original plan, thanks to a booming Ahmedabad seeing growth along the Motera-Indira Bridge stretch.
The original plan was to develop the 10.6 km stretch between Vasna and Dafnala and invest Rs 1,500 crore in it. If all goes according to plan, the project will now stretch up to Karai, on the outskirts of Gandhinagar. The costs too will more than double, reaching Rs 3,500 crore.
State urban development minister Nitin Patel said, "The project will be extended in the second phase to cater to the growing city."
The price of real estate has gone up substantially near Motera over the past couple of years. Even interior villages, like Koteshwar along the riverbank, have seen development. SRFDCL officials said the technical report is ready and the proposal to extend the riverfront has been forwarded to the revenue and urban departments for final approval.
Officials said initially they were looking at a possibility of extending the project right up to Gandhinagar, but since there was no provision to have around-the-year water in the river there, it was decided to end it at Karai. Work on constructing the retainer wall has started.
Officials were not ready to give details on the kind of development they had planned for the extended portion but said it would have everything, from gardens to commercial spaces and entertainment zones.

gandhi.rushabh1992 February 14th, 2012, 09:25 AM Yes, we need some good panaroma pics to appreciate the scale of the project. A few pics from the highrises on Ashram Road would be cool as well. All we get are the views from Patang. Some publicity is required as the riverfront is not very widely known in the rest of the country.
aks_sky February 14th, 2012, 11:08 AM Most of the highrise buildings i.e Patang are on the western side. But then if you think about it there is not much on the development front on the eastern side of the riverfront as compared to the west.
tryindiffdrugsngirls February 14th, 2012, 04:34 PM the river dont look as clean near the power plant or are they still working around that area?
aks_sky February 15th, 2012, 01:26 AM ^^ you mean all the rubbish near the bottom left of that photo above? Yes it is dirty but it is not in the river, it is on the lower promenade. IndianinGermany February 17th, 2012, 10:12 AM Hello all,
I know that we already have got some water-recreation activities started in Sabarmati Riverfront and some more is sure to follow up. However, I feel that the activities are only keeping in mind the recreational facilities and not sports facilities.
Hence, I started reading a bit about water-sports centre developed in other parts of the world. From that I tried to develop a small case-study for a similar facility at Sabarmati Riverfront. I am putting this in the next post to get a feedback from you all, as to what you think of it.
Please be aware, that this exercise was not conducted with thorough research in it. It is just a brainstorming exercise arranged in a structured format. Credits goes to Sefton Water Centre website that provided me with a general structure to the post.
Looking forward to hearing from you all and develop it into something that we in this forum can all be proud of as a collaborative effort.:applause:

GJ10 February 18th, 2012, 01:00 PM Tell me which pics you would like to see from Riverfront. I would go personally to take it.
Well, if you are offering, I think any shots that show Patang along with the riverfront (probably from Gandhi Bridge?) would be great! The shape of Patang is the closest thing to a skyline near the riverfront, so would make a nice shot I think.
Below is a pic I took before the retaining wall was built from the West side of Gandhi bridge looking South... a shot from a little bit to the left of where this was would show the finished stretch of riverfront below as well as the river, patang and other buildings.

But thinking about it now, there is probably a better view from the Eastern side of the bridge!

GJ10 February 19th, 2012, 12:53 PM Soon skyscrapers will dot Riverfront Skyline (http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_soon-skyscrapers-will-dot-riverfront-skyline_1652152)
The city skyline is all set to change. With the Sabarmati Riverfront Development project coming up, city's skyline will extend upwards.
The relaxed norms for the Floor Space Index (FSI) on the riverfront will make skyscrapers a reality. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL), a special purpose vehicle floated by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), is in the process of finalising General Development Control Regulation (GDCR). The company is likely to allow up to five or even more FSI to private developers.
The GDCR allows maximum 2.25 FSI, 1.8 FSI, 1.8 regular plus 0.45 paid FSI, in the residential zone-I. The riverfront project is a unique urban infrastructure project and with a view to encourage private development, the FSI norms will be relaxed.Sources close to the project said, "We may allow FSI starting from 1.8 to 5 or even more depending upon the plot size and location, so that private developers can build skyscrapers.”
Sources also said the private developers will be able to get 100% ground coverage. At present, developers can cover 45% ground in case of low-rise buildings and 30% in high-rise buildings. "We already have a plan for creating green and open space and providing public amenities and other facilities in around 86% land of the riverfront, so the developers need not part with the open area," said the sources.
SRFDCL expects global and national level real estate players to participate in riverfront land auction. It expects bidders to quote double to four times more price for the riverfront land in auction. The sources said the SRFDCL is not meant for making profit, so if it recovers cost of the riverfront development from auction of around 60% to 70% of the land earmarked for auction, then remaining land parcel will be utilised for public amenities. The company has reclaimed 202 hectares land, of which around 28 hectares land will be auctioned at a rate of 14% of the total land.
Sources said the GDCR will be published only after obtaining the go-ahead from state government, particularly from CM Narendra Modi.
The SRFDCL may take six to eight months to make GDCR public and auction the land. The original cost of the riverfront was estimated around Rs770 crore which now has reached Rs1,200 crore. However, the delay in the project has turned out to be a blessing in disguise as hike in realty prices has allowed the company to save around 6% more land for public amenities, said sources.
gandhi.rushabh1992 February 19th, 2012, 03:27 PM FSI of 5... So what is the maximum height permitted ? Is it like if I have 100 sq mts of land, then with an FSI of 5, I can construct upto 5x100 i.e. 500 sq mts of built up area ? But what about the height of that building, what governs that ?
IndianinGermany February 19th, 2012, 06:14 PM Rushabh, yes, essentially you got the FSI calculations right. And that is not too much of FSI. The FSI in even many Asian cities such as Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur is pegged between 5 and 50. (source: http://www.ctbuh.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=uMcIJB58wZA%3D&tabid=62&language=en-GB)
The reason why the FSI needs to be increased more is evident in the DNA article that GJ10 has quoted itself. If private developers are allowed to get 100% ground coverage then the FSI would be sufficient only for a 5 storied building. The FSI needs a major revision to make any dominant skyline out of the Sabarmati Riverfront. I would guess FSI of 20 would give developers a chance to come up with 25 to 30 storied buildings based on the amount of ground coverage.
Correct me if I understood it wrong.
