i dont know,to me something aint right with this project but i cant seem to put a finger on it and that video doesnt help. sorry but i am yet to be convienced by this project.

these are two different projects, KICC management has a proposal for an expanded international conference center, the one with the video is the controversial project at JKIA whose proponents do not even have a valid location anywhere in the world! but as a Kenyan I am open to surprises

^^exactly, they are totally 2 different projects, kicc one was spearheaded by philip kisia now currently Nairobi clerk, i think its dead and buried, i am also pessimistic about the golf city which the tender was advertised at march, how many month it takes to scrutinize and award the contract the winner?:ohno: surely kibaki's cronies are also drying us up:ohno:

^^yep, i can't help i also saw in the newspaper the 28 billion NICC project in the JKIA was to be inaugurated by Kibaki, this week but suspended indefinitely, the reason given the project shrouded by mystery.

A planned groundbreaking ceremony for a Sh27.3 billion hotel at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has been put off, The Standard has learnt.

According to impeccable sources, Kenya Airports Authority Board of Directors has put off the function, which was to be officiated by President Kibaki on March 24, indefinitely

The sources said the KAA board chaired by former Runyenjes MP Martin Wambora, noted that the deal was "shrouded in mystery" and would not want to subject the Head of State to embarrassment.

"It is true the board has put off the ground breaking ceremony for the hotel because they felt they do not want to rubber stamp a project they do not have adequate information about and then embarrass the President in the process," added the sources.

The source said the board gave the example of a project at the Kenya Pipeline Company that ended up embarrassing the President and did not want the same to befall them.

Last week Transport PS Cyrus Njiru, Wambora and Assistant minister Harun Mwau appeared before the parliamentary Transport Departmental Committee over alleged irregularities in the recruitment of a new managing director. The incumbent George Muhoho’s term expires on April 2.

Handpick

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has written to the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission and Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura calling for the recruitment process to be stopped until claims of irregularities are investigated.

KNCHR says it is in receipt of a report alleging Mr Muhoho prefers Stephen Mwangi Gichuki the KAA General Manager, Projects and Engineering Services to succeed him.

"That the alleged interest of Muhoho to "handpick" his preferred successor arises from allegations of financial impropriety and conflict of interest during his tenure, which might occasion an independent investigation upon his exit," says the letter.

Last week, the Ombudsman wrote to the Transport PS warning him to ignore the irregularities at his own peril. Ambassador James Simani, who is the Public Complaints Standing Committee Chairman, told the PS that his office had received complaints with regard to irregularities in the recruitment exercise.

A delegation from Afro Asia, the Qatari firm at the centre of the multi-million ‘airport city’, is expected in town on Sunday even as doubts grow about the implementation of the project.

The delegation comes in the midst of growing skepticism over the project signed between the firm and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) at the tail-end of the seven-year tenure of former chief executive George Muhoho.

Most ironically, it comes after chairman Martin Wambora told the press that it had been shelved: “I can assure you no project will take place until due diligence is done by an independent organisation so that we are sure of that group’s position.”

Taken aback

On Saturday, some of the KAA officials we talked to appeared taken aback by the news of the “huge” delegation led by the Afro Asia chairman. It is expected at the JKIA at 1500 hours.

The project involves development of a convention centre at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, which includes a five-star hotel. At $350 million, it is expected to be the largest foreign direct investment (FDI) in Kenya’s history.

The Cabinet approved the deal in February 2008, paving the way for the concession of 90 acres of KAA land next to the airport for 80 years under a build-operate-and-transfer arrangement.

But controversy dogs it all along with some KAA board members claiming that they are in the dark over what the agreement is all about.

Not surveyed

For one, the 90-acre plot on which the centre is to be built is yet to be surveyed and demarcated as ordered by the Cabinet as a pre-condition for the project implementation.

But the Afro Asia official told Sunday Nation on phone on Saturday: “This is a large project and everything goes step by step. We have some of the best surveyors and every thing will be done.”

Besides the survey, KAA was supposed to carry out an independent due diligence on the firm, to determine whether it has the financial and logistical capacity.

Authority sources blame the finance, legal, engineering, marketing, business development and procurement for not carrying out “proper” due diligence on the firm.

“No due diligence was submitted to the board by Mr Muhoho,” said the sources.

However, the Nairobi-based officials say the firm has developed vast real estate in Doha, Qatar, and is patronised by the royal family of the rich oil emirate.

The official confirmed the postponement of a previous ground-breaking ceremony at which President Kibaki was supposed to officiate on March 24. He did not shed much light though.

Sunday Nation sources have previously intimated that the function was put off by the board to avert a situation where the president would be embarrassed a la Kenya Pipeline Company debacle.

Here Mr Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga were hauled to Makindu near Mombasa only for the system they were ‘launching’ to misfire.

Officials of Afro Asia say they have already completed comprehensive architectural drawings of the complex although KAA officials say submission of the drawings was one of the pending issues.

He added that funds for the project had already been earmarked.

“It is important for us to support the project as it will help our people,” said the official who is of Kenyan origin. “Otherwise these funds will end up in a country like Egypt which is a favourite destination.”

Previous newspaper reports have suggested the deal is biased in favour of the Qataris even as KAA sources reveal penalties running into billions await the authority if it defaults.

Thought this project was dead. Maybe it might just get built but I'm still sceptical about it.

A Qatari firm contracted to construct a US$350 million (about Sh30 billion) convention centre at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is negotiating with Kenya Airports Authority over the delay.

Afro-Asia Investment Corporation chairman Haji Mohamed Yassin Ismail said “we are negotiating certain aspects of the agreement that has caused the delay.”

The project involves development of a convention centre at JKIA, which includes a five-star hotel. At $350 million, it is expected to be the largest foreign direct investment in Kenya’s history.

The Cabinet approved the deal in February 2008, paving the way for the concession of 90 acres of KAA land next to the airport for 80 years under a build-operate-and-transfer arrangement.

The construction of the project is however yet to start although President Kibaki was to preside over a ground-breaking ceremony in 2010.

The controversy

On Saturday, Mr Ismail was confident the project would be realised adding that the delay was as a result of controversy generated by agreement.

“Our company is committed to fulfil that project. We have discussed with KAA and corrected the anomalies,” Mr Ismail said.

Afro-Asia Investment Corporation has developed vast real estate in Doha, Qatar, and is patronised by the royal family of the rich oil emirate.

Mr Ismail regretted that one of the firm’s lawyers had gone behind it and pushed for the project to be taken over from Afro-Asia Investment Corporation after neglecting his duties in signing of agreement.
