The Malaysian group QSR announced today that it will open a KFC outlet in Phnom Penh by years end.
QSR Brands Bhd is expanding its restaurant business under the KFC brand to Cambodia.
The first outlet is expected to be operational in Phnom Penh by year-end, said chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim during a press conference to announce the new venture Thursday.
The group plans to open four outlets initially in the capital as well as in major towns. This would be followed by two new restaurants every year.

Malaysian group gets rights to open Pizza Huts in Cambodia
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian restaurant operator QSR Brands Bhd has obtained rights to operate outlets of the fast-food chain Pizza Hut in Cambodia, a news report said Friday.
The company, which opened the first KFC fast-food chicken outlet in Cambodia on March 2, obtained approval from the international restaurant company Yum Restaurants Asia Pte Ltd to open the Pizza Huts, The Edge Daily, a Malaysian financial newspaper, reported.
KFC is currently being operated via Kampuchea Food Corp Co Ltd, a joint venture of QSR, Royal Group of Companies and Rightlink Corp Ltd, the report said.
The company said a new wholly owned subsidiary would be set up under the joint venture to undertake Pizza Hut operations in Cambodia.

sth_Auk March 26th, 2009, 10:50 AM It was talked about since long ago, but it could never be confirmed. Today, it is a done deal though: the first Starbucks Coffee will open its doors in a few days in Phnom Penh, inside The Place complex on Sihanouk Blvd.
The famous green logo will now sits in the entrance to the new sport and restaurant complex located the heart of the city, next to the Independence Monument. Following the opening of Pizza company, Swensen’s ice cream and KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken), it is now the turn of Starbucks to leave its mark in Cambodia’s capital. According to the license owner who declines to talk publicly, the opening of this coffee shop, albeit the first one, is far from being the last one either. Cambodge Soir Hebdo was not able to glean additional information on the arrival of the coffee and retail giant which is now available in Cambodia.
Started in Seattle in the 70s, the first Starbucks shop earns its name from the US novel “Moby Dick” by Herman Melvilles.
For the past 10 years, the Starbucks phenomenon never ceases to grow. Currently, Starbucks has more than 9,000 shops spread in 30 countries in the world. Starbucks is omnipresent in all of Asia, in particular in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand.

CAMBODIA’S first Pizza Hut is set to open this year along with five new branches of KFC, according to the chairman of QSR Brands Bhd. In an interview with the Malaysia Star newspaper, published Monday, Tan Sri Muhammed Ali Hasim announced his intention to invest RM4.8 million (US$1.32 million) in the new branches. QSR is the franchisee for both chains in the Kingdom. Ali explained that Pizza Hut restaurant would be built in Phnom Penh’s riverside area. Two of the new KFCs – which are operated by the Kampuchea Food Company – will be located in Battambang and Kampong Cham. Three more KFC restaurants will open in Phnom Penh, the report added.

SeeMacau April 15th, 2010, 04:38 PM The Starbucks in Cambodia is fake, didn't obtain any legal license from the Starbucks Headquarter. The cafe actually operates illegally in Cambodia.
It will take at least 5 to 10 years for ''Golden Arches'' to enter the Cambodian market, even Vietnam which is far more advance in economic wise than Cambodia still got no ''Maccas''.

Louis Vuitton to open in Cambodia?
April 22, 2010 by Diana Saw
According to this Oct 2009 China Times article, Cambodia is on the list of new LV shops that will be launched across Asia - unsurprising, really, as reports of LV wanting to set up shop in Cambodia can be traced back to 2002.
The China Times article comes after the opening of LV's 440th shop in Ulaan Bataar, capital of Mongolia. Chairman and CEO Yves Carcelle said at the Ulaan Bataar shop opening: "LV's philosophy of opening shops is not to wait until there is a business district/market area (商圈) before we enter, but rather, whereever LV opens our shops, it is to create a market area."
Gossip is that the LV shop, if it does open, will be housed in the US$300 million Gold Tower 42 on Sihanouk Boulevard, supposedly Phnom Penh's poshest building. Gold Tower 42 is slated to be completed in October 2011.
Very exciting news! Louis Vuitton is now on the waiting list to enter the Cambodia retail market. From what I guess, there is a very high chance the boutique will open at the ground floor of Golden Tower 42.
But it could also open in Siem Reap. An Oct 2002 Australian Financial Review report:
"Visitors to the Cambodian temples may soon be able to buy a Louis Vuitton handbag nearby. LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton is the world's biggest producer of luxury clothing and accessories. The company's head of operations in Thailand and Vietnam, Guillaume Thery, says new stores are earmarked for Angkor Wat, near Cambodia's temple complex, and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam..."
While LVMH cannot make up its mind about Cambodia, it did open in Ho Chi Minh city in Q3 of 2007.
No doubt Cambodia's glitterati and wannabes will be thrilled to welcome LV. Sad, really. I much prefer this "LV" on a Khmer street kid. LOL.
Anyway, below is an excerpt of the Chinese text for those who can read Chinese and for New York Mag's coverage of the Mongolian store opening (nothing about Cambodia though) click here.

No Starbucks in Cambodia, their coffee is a bit too expensive for the average Cambodian to afford. But there is one Gloria Jean at Boeung Keng Kang, customers are mainly foreigners.
heavyrain2408 June 17th, 2010, 12:38 AM most vnese told me they dont like this restaurant!
To be more specific, Northern people don't like branded Pho restaurant like Pho 24 or Pho Vuong for the following reasons:
- They are cooked in Southern style which is totally different from the Northern style and is considered unauthentic. Their flavors are also changed to adapt to foreigners.
- Vietnamese people don't eat Pho in restaurant with cold A/C. We like to eat Pho in an open space, best on streets.
But these Pho restaurants are very good for tourists who are familiar with the taste of Pho outside Vietnam, specifically the Vietnamese American Pho style
If you like Vietnamese American Pho, go to Pho 24 and you will not get disappointed.:)
SeeMacau June 17th, 2010, 05:18 AM There are two Pho 24 (Phnom Penh Center and another one at Daun Penh) here in Cambodia, I only been to the one at Phnom Penh Center.
The pho was ok only
heavyrain2408 June 17th, 2010, 11:17 PM Oops. Don't you know that most of Vietnamese signature foods were invented in Northern VN then brought to other regions of the country? Pho, for example, was invented in Nam Dinh province, then became famous in Hanoi in 1920s. It only became popular in Southern Vietnam until 1950s. Don't you say that the modified version is "authentic"?
Btw, Northen Vietnamese food is distinguished from Chinese food. Perhaps the foods looks similar because we live in the same region with the Southern China and use same ingredients available in that region. If the foods were the same, Hanoi would not be voted as one of best 10 cites for food in the world (http://www.shermanstravel.com/top_tens/Cities_for_Foodies#3). Tokyo was the only other Asian city on the list. :)

Btw, how abt foreign super market chain in Cambodia? Are Big C or Metro popular there? ^^
SeeMacau June 18th, 2010, 03:43 AM No Big C and Metro Cash & Carry here.
I believe Big C will soon enter the Cambodia market (It has branches all over Thailand and a few in Vietnam) when all the projects completed in the suburb like Camko City or Grand International Phnom Penh City, with all the high purchasing power households and consumers.
Now it is not a good time for them to enter the Cambodia market. The supermarkets are not doing so well here, locals still prefer to shop at the grocery or market. Only the rich one, and foreigners go to the supermarkets
The biggest local supermarket chain "Lucky'' only has 4 branches in Phnom Penh and 1 branch in Siem Reap.

Phnom Penh doesn't need such a big supermarket center at the moment.

There is one Viet Tien here at Monivong Road, and a fashion brand called ''Ninomaxx'' at Sihanouk Rd few years ago (already closed down)
Other than Malaysia, Parkson is only famous in Vietnam and China. In the near future, there will be 2 Parkson Department Stores here in Phnom Penh.
One of them will occupy the first few floors of the Embassy Center

SOVEREIGN Retail Group is to bring a fourth international fashion brand to Phnom Penh’s Sihanouk Boulevard – an area that a representative said yesterday was set to become Cambodia’s equivalent of Singapore shopping destination Orchid Road.
Marketing manager Ly Souden said yesterday that the Cambodian-owned company planned to open a branch of Mango, a world-famous women’s clothing franchise, on Sihanouk Boulevard in November.
It plans to open next to an Axara Paris, an upmarket women’s clothing store that originated in France, which the Sovereign Retail Group also owns.
Along the boulevard are two more Sovereign-owned shops, shoe retailer VNC and womens' clothing shop E.pse.
Both those labels originated in Malaysia, and Sovereign has also opened a branch of VNC in Siem Reap.
Despite Cambodia’s status as a hub of the global garment industry, its first branch of Mango – a Spanish brand with franchises operating across the world – would not sell any domestically manufactured clothes.
Ly Souden said he thought the brand used to have a clothing factory in the Kingdom, but that it no longer operated.
However, he said that Sihanouk Boulevard could soon become a draw for shoppers seeking retail paradise.
It would not be long before more well-known brands set up on the street, he said.
“I’m sure [other brands] will be doing that. Currently we’re the largest fashion retail company in Cambodia. We own most of the famous brands,” he said.
The company, established in 2003, also plans to bring more stores to the Kingdom, but he would not yet reveal which ones.
Ninety percent of customers at Sovereign’s Phnom Penh shops were Cambodian, he said.
Another to compare Sihanouk Boulevard with well-known shopping destinations was Gloria Jean’s coffee shop Managing Director Michael Albert.
He said yesterday that the area of the boulevard around streets 51 and 57, was becoming a retail high street, a trend that had “accelerated” during the past year.
“It’s looking like more high-end brands are starting to set up in that area,” he said.
Phnom Penh’s Gloria Jean’s, a franchise of the Australian-based company, opened on Street 51 three months ago.
Mango’s public relations team, based in Spain, did not respond to questions yesterday regarding the company’s regional presence.

American jeans company Levi’s has launched its first Cambodian outlet, but company officials have said its primary competition will initially come from the domestic black market.
Located in Phnom Penh’s Lucky Department store, the outlet is run by licensee DKSH (Thailand) Ltd.
DKSH general manager Kevin Cornning said:“It’s really a venture into the unknown.”
He emphasised DKSH began with similar circumstances in Thailand with one or two stores some 20 years ago, and had since increased its outlets to 145.
DKSH was licensed to produce and sell Levi’s products in Thailand, and its Phnom Penh branch represented its first foray outside the country, he said.
While DKSH does not plan to manufacture any Levi’s products in the Kingdom, the US-based company Levi Strauss & Co does produce clothing in Cambodia.
These Cambodian-produced wares are now exported to foreign markets.
Cornning acknowledged that the Levi’s brand’s local production may lead to genuine products “falling off the back of a truck” and ending up for sale on local markets, which could then compete with sales from the genuine store.
However, he said domestic demand for legitimate brand-name clothing was maturing, pointing to fashion names such as Mango opening outlets in Phnom Penh.
“If we were the only brand name [launching right now], we’d be a little concerned,” he said.
He said counterfeit Levi’s products were also available in local markets, but that experience from Thailand showed customers were interested in spending extra money for genuine goods.
“There’s always a consumer who wants a real, authentic product,” he said.
Levi’s Cambodia Manager Chariya Preap said the firm’s focus would be on an upper-middle class demographic, as its pricing was higher than most other retailers presently operating in Phnom Penh.
“Everyone knows of Levi’s,” she said. “The emphasis [of the new store] is on authenticity, that Levi’s is selling authentic products.”
The firm is keeping its eye on sales at its first store, and testing products to see which product lines resonate with Cambodia’s consumers. DKSH is considering expanding with up to three more Cambodian stores during 2011, she said.
Meanwhile, Levi Strauss & Company has announced plans to add another 50 stores in China, Singapore, and South Korea under its dENiZEN brand.
The dENiZEN clothing line targets 18-to 28-year-olds, and includes jeans, tops and accessories, the company said in a statement from August.
“There’s this consumer in rapidly emerging markets in developing countries around the world, China being the most notable,” said Aaron Boey, a president in charge of the Asian operations.

SeeMacau October 23rd, 2010, 05:01 PM ^^ It is a lot easier to get the KFC licence than McDonald's.
To obtain a licence from McDonald, the franchisor has to go through different stages of requirements. After that, McDonald's head office has to conduct a proper market research and see whether majority of people living in that country can afford to eat at McDonald's.
The story is different for KFC - KFC licence in Cambodia is own by a Malaysia firm, and it is not that difficult to obtain the licence as long as the franchisor can paid enough money for the franchising right, plus experiences of owning different fast food restaurants.

If McDonald wants market share, it has to be here before the market is ready, and expect to loose some money for at least a couple of years. Anyway, the Burger market, BB World, Lucky, etc, prove the market is ready. You simply customise your products to suit local budget (make the meals smaller, like KFC).

Burger King (Hungry Jack's in Australia) set to open in Cambodia
SeeMacau December 20th, 2010, 08:57 AM Fast food sector takes off

Matthew Backhouse and Sen David
Competition is heating up in Cambodia’s growing fast-food sector, with international chains Pizza Hut and Burger King set to go head-to-head in the Kingdom.
But the industry’s rapid expansion is a cause for concern among street vendors and local restaurateurs, some of whom are feeling the pinch from increasing competition and changing customer expectations.
The market for fast food in Phnom Penh is estimated to be worth US$40 million a year, which accounts for 5.3 percent of the capital’s $744 million annual food expenditure, according to Tep Virak, general manager of Express Food Group – which runs Pizza Company and Swensen’s franchises in the Kingdom.
But while fast food still has a relatively small market share, competition within the sector has increased significantly in the past five years.
Tep Virak said business was becoming “tougher and tougher every day”.
That trend looks set to continue as Cambodia’s fast-food heavyweights expand their existing franchises and introduce new international brands.
Express Food Group is currently negotiating for the rights to run a franchise of American fast-food chain Burger King, while KFC’s investors are planning to open the Kingdom’s first Pizza Hut early next year.
“Competition is going to be tougher when more international brands come, but I believe that we can still be competitive,” Tep Virak said.
“We are well-prepared. We’ve built a good foundation to step on.”
Express Food Group, a subsidiary of Thai company RMA Group, plans to build two new outlets of Swensen’s and Pizza Company next year, bringing the total number of each store to six and eight respectively. It also plans to expand its newest brand, Korean franchise BBQ Chicken, by three shops.
Tep Virak said the Burger King deal was moving forward, but the launch was still some time away.
“We are still discussing, negotiating. We are progressing but I cannot give any timeline,” he said.
He said the company was performing well and would seek to be listed on Cambodia’s planned stock exchange, but he declined to give revenue details.
Meanwhile, business at KFC is picking up following the economic crisis.
Benjamin Jerome, general manager of KFC franchisee Kampuchea Food Corporation, said revenue growth was expected to reach 5 percent per annum.
The company, a joint venture between Kith Meng’s Royal Group, Malaysian company QSR and Hong Kong firm Rightlink, has pumped $10 million into its KFC franchises since the first outlet opened in 2008. It plans to build three new stores next year, bringing the total to 13.
The company is also putting $3 million towards its Pizza Hut franchise, with the first outlet due to open on Phnom Penh’s Monivong Boulevard early next year. Ten more Pizza Hut stores are planned over the next five years.
Jerome said the sector had recovered well from the recession and was “still vibrant as before”.
“The recovery of the world economic situation, which impacted the domestic consumer spending, did help the recovery of the industry,” he said.
He said the fast-food sector was “a challenging environment”, but he welcomed further competition.
“More competition will improve the industry’s standards, which benefits consumer choice and satisfaction.”
But not everyone stands to benefit from greater consumer choice.
Street vendor Chan Thouen said the growing popularity of fast food had contributed to a decline in sales at the barbecue chicken stall that she and her mother have operated on Phnom Penh’s Sihanouk Boulevard for 10 years.
“Prior to five years ago, I sold 80 to 90 chickens per day. I sold very well,” she said. “Business has gone down. Right now I sell just 40 chickens per day.”
Tep Virak also concedes the fast- food industry has had an impact on local businesses, noting a decline in the number of local restaurants across Phnom Penh’s Japanese bridge in recent years.
But he said that was due to changing consumer expectations, rather than customers rejecting traditional Khmer food.
Fast-food restaurants offered better hygiene, faster service and a more modern dining experience than traditional restaurants, he said.
Customers were mostly Cambodians, and included middle-class professionals, young families with children, and educated youths who readily engaged with Western culture.
Norton University student Song Srey Kouch, 23, is among the young Cambodians who have embraced fast food.
“When I have free time after school, I like to eat chicken at KFC with friends. It is comfortable to eat [in], it has good service,” she said.
But her friend Toun Lomong, 23, a student at the Royal University of Law and Economics, said she preferred to eat traditional Cambodian chicken.
“I like to eat Khmer chicken because it is delicious and it is cheaper than the chicken at KFC,” she said.
That sentiment is good news for Khmer food vendors like Chan Thouen, who said she expected her barbecue chicken business to survive despite declining sales.
While Tep Virak agreed that the fast-food sector was unlikely to threaten the survival of traditional Khmer cuisine.
“I don’t think we are going to replace any Cambodian food any time soon. They eat the traditional food every day, so when they go out they want to try something new – that’s it,” he said.

Angkorian123 January 18th, 2011, 06:02 AM Fast food sector takes off
Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:39
^^ I ain't gonna lie! Kith Meng is the fucken Man:):lol:
Angkorian123 January 18th, 2011, 06:06 AM Electronics giant Panasonic launches Cambodian office
The Cambodian market has high potential. It is located in a very important geographical location.
JAPANESE electronic giant Panasonic launched its first representative office in Cambodia on Saturday, identifying it as a market with “high potential”.
Ikuo Miyamoto, managing executive officer of Panasonic Corporation, highlighted the Kingdom’s “young and dynamic” workforce and praised the government’s encouragement of foreign investment during a meeting at Phnom Penh’s Intercontinental Hotel.
“I strongly feel the great potential of significant growth that Cambodia will perform in the near future,” he said, according to a transcript of the speech.
“The Cambodian market has high potential. It is located in a very important geographical location between Thailand and Vietnam ... That is why Panasonic has decided to open a representative office here ahead of its competitors,” he said.
“Today is the new first step for Panasonic in Cambodia. We will strive to maximize our efforts to carry out locally-oriented management, ” he added.
The company claims to have garnered a 68-percent market share of air conditioner unit sales in the Kingdom last year.
Panasonic also aims to introduce new products and provide an “after care servcies” for its Cambodian customers in the near future.
Keo San, director of San International Co Ltd, which has imported and distributed Panasonic air conditioning units since the early 1990s said that sales had grown since its launch.
“At the beginning, sometimes we could not sell even one a month, but now, our sales are better,” he said, refusing the give specific or assumed figures because of competition concerns.
Hidehiko Kondo, who is a representative from Panasonic’s new Cambodia office, emphasised to The Post the company’s position for growth.
He said that even though there had been some success in selling to Cambodia, the market was still small due to limited numbers of households with access to electricity.
Panasonic aims to mainly target customers in Phnom Penh, he said.
The new office is located on Street 120, in Daun Penh district, Phnom Penh.

Coffee Bean in Cambodia .
Friday, 20 May 2011 15:00 Tom Brennan ..
THE first Cambodian franchise of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf will be opened by South Korean investors later this year, according to company officials.
The inaugural location of the United States-based chain in the Kingdom would occupy 110 square metres on the ground floor of Phnom Penh Tower on Monivong Boulevard, Coffee Bean Cambodia Operations Manager Brice Smith said.
“This is the flagship store, so we want to make a big impression,” he said yesterday, adding the Phnom Penh Tower was chosen as a location for that reason.
“It’s going to be on par with what you see in the States,” he said.
Plans call for the first outlet to open September 1, though construction delays could mean it launches in October. The firm plans some 10 outlets within five years, in Phnom Penh as well as branching out to Sihanoukville and Siem Reap.
In addition to its US presence, Coffee Bean also operates stores in the Middle East and elsewhere in Asia, including a number of ASEAN countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, according to the company’s website. It claims over 750 outlets worldwide.
Smith said one successful strategy used to gain a foothold in Vietnam was to create an iced coffee tailored to local tastes.
He said Coffee Bean plans to pursue a similar initiative in Cambodia, in addition to adding food items that domestic consumers will prefer.
“We’re doing a lot of market research,” he said, adding that appealing to locals is important because the business can’t depend on tourists alone.
The company is now searching for store managers, Smith said. Those who are chosen will be sent to Malaysia for training.
Coffee Bean was due to launch in Cambodia last year, though with a different franchisee.
That investor later backed out, leaving an opening for the current ownership, he said.
Coffee Bean Cambodia Chairman and CEO Damon Lee could not be reached for comment yesterday.

I think there are plenty of potential, but shopping centre investor don't have the patience and flood it with small stalls that sells cheaps and/or fake stuff.
Prehaps a high class shopping center in places like Naga Hotel & Casino. Prehaps the Dream Park shuld have been developed into a high class shopping center instead.

Facing the street will be ideal, but I think whereever it is, it has all got to do with marketing.
Does it really works out in Norodom Bld, does riches shopper really wants to walk in 40C heat or perfer to be inside a cool shopping malls walking from one brand name store to another?
SeeMacau June 15th, 2011, 01:25 PM Yes, marketing.
It doesnt work out in Norodom Boulevard, it is not a shopping street.
Rich people prefer to shop in the shopping center or shopping arcade inside the hotel
Here is an example in Macau, this is a shopping enter but the shops are facing the street. Shoppers can enter through the shop from the street or inside the shopping center.

My name is Paul, and I am a US food franchise executive that is traveling to Cambodia in 2 weeks. I'm meeting with franchise owners to discuss their interest in franchising more US brands into the country. My restaurant chains are healthy, high-quality foods, inexpensive, and has been very big in other parts of the world.
I'd like to know if anybody could make any introductions to these folks for me. I'd greatly appreciate it!

kimmy February 15th, 2012, 08:24 AM High-end retailers find new market Don Weinland
Wednesday, 15 February 2012
The latest clothing styles from Paris and Barcelona were rare finds in Phnom Penh stores five years ago.
But Cambodia’s growing middle class has brought with it shoppers more willing to fork out cash for expensive threads, name-brand clothing retailers say.
Per-capita gross domestic product in current US dollars increased about 70 per cent between 2006 and 2011, according to Ministry of Economy and Finance estimates.
The trend is translating into more shoppers at the increasing number of name-brand clothing shops on Sihanouk Boulevard, near the capital’s Independence Monument.
“[Cambodians] really have purchasing power now. They come in nice cars, but you also see people pulling up on motorcycles and shopping in our stores,” said Ly Souden, marketing manager at Sovereign Retail Group, one of Cambodia's two major name-brand clothing importers and brand representatives.
Domestically owned Sovereign Retail opened a VNC clothing franchise on the north side of Sihanouk Boulevard in 2005.
Today, the company owns Paris's Axara and Spain's Mango franchises, as well as Malaysian brands
On the south side of the boulevard, Ming Wouy Group, also domestically owned, represents brands such as Polo Club, Pierre Cardin and Samsonite.
Ming Wouy and Sovereign Retail will expand this year on the positive economic outlook for the country in 2012.
The government has projected 6.5 per cent year-on-year growth.
Thaipheang Oudam, area sales manager at Ming Wouy's New Collection sales venue on Sihanouk Boulevard, said sales for name-brand products were driven by customers who had spent time overseas, but customers who had never been abroad were also peeking into the stores.
“The middle class is growing. People are going to school, taking care of their families and spending more money,” he said.
Sovereign Retail's sales grew by an annualised 11 per cent in 2011, Ly Souden said, up from four per cent in 2009 and 2010, but below the pre-economic crisis growth of 15 per cent.
Ming Wouy's clothing retail saw a similar trend, but Thaipheang Oudam did not disclose exact growth figures.
Sales were still threatened by the counterfeit products that flooded Cambodia's markets, the retailers said.
“We have faced that problem. A lot of people were asking why they need to buy shoes here for $40 when they can get them for half price somewhere else,” Ly Souden said.
“Some people don't trust us. ‘Is this the real thing?' they ask.”
Five years ago, the concept of a name brand was novel to most Cambodians, Ly Souden said.
The recent increase in clothing products from Europe has introduced new quality standards to the Kingdom.
Thaipheang Oudam said counterfeit products had actually helped shape an appreciation for name brands.
As the Khmer concept of quality evolved, an increasing number of Cambodians were seeking out authentic counterparts of the fake brands they had worn for years, he said.
The clothing market was intensely competitive and “chaotic”, City Mall general manager Hung Chuang Ming said this week.
The sheer number of shops marketing clothing – real or fake, on the street or in a mall – reduced the potential market share any one retailer could capture, he said.
Clothing isn't the only thing name-brand clothing retailers are trying to market.
Sovereign Retail and Ming Wouy say they are also trying to sell a customer-service experience.
Opening the Mango franchise required a level of service training not available five years ago, Ly Souden said.
Only when staff had met Mango's service requirements, as well as design standards for the venue, was Sovereign Retail granted the franchise, he said.
“The key to any luxury brand's success will be how it targets consumers and the point-of-sales experience when they go into the stores,” Marcus Osborne, CEO of the Malaysia-based brand consultancy FusionBrand, said.
Developing brand awareness would be an important factor in emerging markets, Osborne said.
Promotion, presentation and advertising would shape the customer's experience with the brand, he said, although the process would take time.
Retailers predict fast growth in the niche market this year.
Japanese shopping-mall developer Aeon will begin building a mall this year, with completion expected in 2014.
Hiroyuki Okazaki, Aeon’s deputy general manager in Cambodia said the company saw much potential for high-end clothing retail in Phnom Penh.
He declined to mention specific brands but said the mall would have Western luxury products as well as products from Japan and Korea.
Based on the rate of market growth, Ly Souden said it was impossible to say what brands Cambodian shoppers would be trying on in the next few years.
“We can't have these brands here now, but in five years I think we’ll have Louis Vuitton and Gucci,” he said.
SeeMacau February 15th, 2012, 03:21 PM You don't have to wait 5 years for Louis Vuitton, it will be here next year (most likely)
