bout time this one commenced. it finally got approval a few weeks back. Its had an amazing history of designing with planners and devlopers, finally agreeing to current envelope. It had to be set back from Broadway and Harris st with height limited to 50m. I think Bob Nation won design comp? i could be wrong.
I have this on ss.com but under a dif name. this sounds better.

KFC is about two doors up from McDonalds and Oporto is just across the street, and as Trances mentioned there's a nice sushi store near Maccas as well. ;)
Actually, this development is next door to my uni building (on the left side of the pic with the curved roof and next door the the ABC HQ), so it would be a super convenient place for me to live! Of course, I hope that I graduate before it is finished, considering that it hasnt even started construction yet!

But thanks for starting the thread and posting the pics :okay:
By the tower's render it looks so much better than the one they tried to market for the site around the mid-90s. Still looks as though the apartments are a bit pokey though.
Apart from the bleak area behind the stores at 720 George, just behind the Agincourt pub on Harris Street, it is amazingly filthy. Hopefully when Taragon Central is completed it will be a lot cleaner there.
....and from directly across the street, from certain angles it will hide the huge blank wall of the ABC HQ as there may be yet another building in-between to accomplish that completely :) which is still white on the Town Hall model table :( .
BTW folks, don't forget that Hungry Jacks is just an elevator ride away too ;)

Actually, I believe construction is beginning...or demolition at least! There are new big hoardings along the footpath on the Harris St frontage (the smaller portion of the complex seein in the rendering to the left of the Agincourt Hotel), and demolition noises coming from within...seems like a start at least! :)

They have now also put up hoardings on Central Square.
I noticed the hoardings on Harris St have the MIRVAC logo also upside down. Nothing on the Mirvac web site as yet. Don't know if they are recycled or to be covered at a later time.
Some work guys with construction hats were busy milling about the Harris St side too.
So this, I guess is now U/C.
BTW The salesroom has re-opened a few doors down.

Well this one had been very busy as of late. They have demolished the old crappy run down computer store and it looks like the bulk of the site (behind Macca's) is now cleared. Hopefully this one will go up soon and quickly. It would wonders to the area and maintain the skyline at street level at railway square.

Love the overall perspective of the 2nd render.
As for the building itself from any render, it just seems awkwardly placed; Ad-hocism. The above not as glassy/transparent as the original night render & another blank wall coming up too (perhaps difficult to see from Central Sq though).

Curiously, a blank wall on the northern facade as well as the eastern side facing Central Square. Taragon is adjacent to the back & middle section of The Peter Johnson Building @ 702-730 Harris Street, so nothing will be built up against it. A billboard planned perhaps? A billboard would be quite visible from the square behind The ABC Buildings where I took these pics yesterday arvo...afterall, there is the ABC news ticker in the square as well.
So many vertical setbacks in the design, on all sides (see previously posted renders & construction pics as well).

^^ i've seen the city model, but i still can't quite work out its actual positioning. Does it encroach into the plaza at all, or does some of The Peter Johnson Building have to come down (perhaps where the wide stairs with the awning are to the right of the frontage), seeing its address is the same, or neither, or both? lol

A lot of the tower is being painted a lovely charcoal grey. This includes the whole eastern wall facing TAFE's Marcus Clark Building, the top right-hand-corner of the north-facing wall (The ABC Building side), the top slabs, balcony dividers and the walls of the vertical setback facing west towards the UTS Building/CUB site. This is seen in the night render posted above, and not the day renders which shows it just as all white.
Therefore the tower component will be grey & white.

Had a proper squiz yesterday.
It's not bad archtecture, but it would fit perfectly into St Leonards with Australand's Nexus & Arden.
At least it brings a bit more architectural variety to Central Sq, which has become quite ecclectic.
