View Full Version : Your Favourite Niches of British Culture
ill tonkso April 15th, 2010, 12:05 AM An idea for a thread, what are those little things about Britain and its culture that you love? Something that makes you feel at home. We talk a lot about what we like from other cultures, but what about the things we have to offer?
Im gonna start with Canal Barges.
http://sikes-sykesfamilies.rootsweb.com/canal-barge-dupe.gif
The unique narrowboats that run the length of the UK never fail to impress me with their own art style and little culture. I like the fact that in the middle of our second largest metropolis, theres this...
http://s0.geograph.org.uk/photos/12/74/127483_7a22ee55.jpg
It's awesome :D Even in the big developments up in London, you can find narrowboats (Paddington Basin, City Road, soon the Olympic Park).
If Narrowboats dont take your fancy, try out the Peak District tradition of 'Well Dressing'. Every year each village harvests thousands of flower petals and decorates their well.
http://partyhouses.co.uk/images/Well-Dressing.gif
http://www.strettonhandley.derbyshire.sch.uk/woolleynews/graphics/welldressing2003.jpg
http://www.buxtonfringe.org.uk/picture_library/2009/medium.WellDressing.jpg
Originating in the 14th century, the practice has changed very little. A wooden frame is constructed and filled with clay, the design is then traced onto the clay which is then covered in flower petals, moss, cones, beans, anything natural.
What else is out there? Those little things that make us British.
Please nobody hijack this thread in support of the ultra left or ultra right wing.

Gherkin April 15th, 2010, 12:26 AM I wouldn't say it's a favourite of mine, but I like how whenever you go more than a few miles out of town and look into the nearest field there are always a team of old people walking around as if they're training to climb Everest.
http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt118/awaren8/rambler.jpg
Me and some friends walked up our local hill/mountain with a flagpole and plonked it on the top, ran down, celebrated... and some local ramblers at the bottom said we didn't take walking up hills seriously.
Will someone tell them they don't need £100s of Millets/Blacks gear to go walking! I've climbed hills in my bare feet...

for an hour or two, nothing in life matters except getting a good run down your nearest hill. There's a great sense of community that is rarely portrayed by the media, who instead focus on, "ice casualties in the billions" and "fuck there's no grit left". Luckily, this makes the people having a good time on the slopes feel that little bit more unique.

ill tonkso April 16th, 2010, 10:11 AM I love the fact that despite the manufactured shit that ITV seem to support, most of our Music is not fake commercial crap. Our Indie scene is second to none and enjoyed across the globe. Countries like the US seem to export a lot of R&B 'im rich and get lots of ho's' shit and their alternative contribution, which is very good, gets lost amongst it all..
We need to get rid of the Simon Cowell fake 'music to make money' crap and focus on our fantastic Indie scene. The whole bunch of lads/laddettes in a band have always represented what the British music industry can do, right back as far as The Beatles.
Sister Anne April 16th, 2010, 10:29 AM But indie music is moribund and rubbish. It went from being something vaguely important and counter-culteral in the 1980s to something as mainstream and over-produced and nothing-to-say as the worst excesses of Simon Cowell (gyac indie bands use autotune too). I would say the last decent/relevant British guitar album was the debut by The Libertines and that was, what, 2003? Out greatest and most consistently amazing musical export of the last 10 years has been Girls Aloud.

Cmon, do you really think banter only exists in the UK/USA?? Just because you can't read/understand dutch or german doesn't mean there is no banter here.
Here in Belgium the banter is more between the 'provinces' in Flandres. Each has a totally different accent and you immediately know where that person is from. Most of us constantly have to laugh when we meet som1 from another province, especially from 'Limburg' because they are known to talk veeeeeery sloooooooow. People from 'West-Vlaanderen' are called 'farmers' and they talk like 'm too, a bit vulgar language :) People from Antwerp are called 'big necks' + there accent is very funny though. We constantly flame each other because that person is from Limburg or Antwerp. We (flanders) also got banter with the Netherlands also because of their very funny accent. If we meet them on holiday we always say: "oh no, hollanders" (in a friendly way, banter) It's not only about accent though.
There is no banter with the french speaking people tho.
I'm sorry to bust your bubble but the UK isn't as special as you think :| :)

I just don't get how the North American's have rebranded HP Brown Sauce as "Steak Sauce" and have it on beef.
The waitress in LA gave me a strange look when I asked for "Steak Sauce" to put on my breakfast.
On a similar subject, I have never understood why the term "tomato sauce" gets a blank look in the States. Surely it is not that much of a leap in imagination to guess what the "silly Limey" is asking for.
Republica April 18th, 2010, 03:18 PM HP sauce in particular is the best thing ever. Vinegary, spicy and exotic, yet highly british.

If you pronounce 'water' perfectly they will not understand you. I remember putting on my best Queen's English but nope, they will never comprehend it. I never understood that.
Nightjar April 18th, 2010, 03:27 PM In my family they prefer Daddies, but (whisper it :shifty:) I prefer HP, which is less vinegary and thicker.
A full English is a sorry affair without Brown Sauce.
PS - is 'Steak Sauce' the same thing as Brown sauce?

Then you will appreciate my frushtration when I stayed at a certain hotel on 7th Ave in NYC, almost opposite MSG. For the second stay running, we had brown dusty water coming out of the bathroom taps at the weekend.
I tried every possible way of pronouncing water before they finally understood me lol.

Yes, well in most of the Restaurants I have been to in the States and Canada. It is normally proper HP sauce, with the Houses of Parliament on the bottle.

plank007 April 26th, 2010, 05:39 PM Five Great Gifts England has Given to the World
5. WAGs
Obviously there have been hot chicks dating athletes ever since the first guy laced up cleats. However, it wasn't until the British tabloids gave this phenomenon a snappy acronym that we started seeing photo galleries of WAGs all over sports-related Internet pages.
So thanks to England, now a fellow can follow his favorite team while getting a healthy dose of boobies.
4. Fish and Chips
Sometime in the mid-19 century England adopted fish and chips as their national food. Basically, against all good judgment and respect for the cardiovascular system, you limeys decided that you could deep fry a meat, deep fry a vegetable, and call that dinner.
While it's true Americans have taken over the reigns of fried food innovation since those days of Dickens, it's fair to say we would have never been exposed to the food-pyramid bending genius of the KFC Double Down if fish and chips hadn't been there first.
3. Ne'er-do-well royal family
All over the globe, our leaders have become increasingly unpopular. It's almost enough to make an earthling pine for the days when the world was run by a collection of in-bred royal families. This is why it's so important England keeps her now powerless royal line around -- presumably for kicks and giggles.
Sure, democracy doesn't always exalt the best and brightest into positions of power. But, as England displays for all to see, our elected officials are still better than the chuckle-heads who would be calling the shots if we did it the old-fashion wa
2. Cross-dressing comics
While it's always been funny when a dude dresses up like a lady, British comics – from Monty Python and Benny Hill to Eddie Izzard and Little Britain – have really taken the humour in wearing women's clothes to another level.
Which is a good thing, because now we can think of crazy uncle Mort as somewhat of a sophisticated eccentric – rather than just a freak who steals women's clothes from the laundromat and then hangs around truck stops.
1. The USA
What else did you think would be number 1? Seriously though, for laying the seeds for what became space ship America the world owes England a great debt of gratitude.
And so do we. Which is why, if push comes to shove, America will always use all of our resources available to protect England from the tyranny of Icelandic volcano ash.
JDN21 April 26th, 2010, 09:51 PM Brits abroad.
Even the most non-patriotic Liverpool supporters I know still don an England shirt whilst abroad 'to show em im British, not one of them'.
Colonising entire islands or cities and calling them our own - case in point - Ibiza or The Costa Del Sol. It's like England but abroad.
English sports fans descending on foreign lands in the thousands no matter where on Earth it is, sometimes even outnumbering the locals. England at the World Cup literally means half the male 18-50 population of England is out of the country.
We slag off our country all the time at home, but when it's us against the world, or on holiday in some foreign land, we are even more patriotic than those Yankies.
Boba Fett22 April 26th, 2010, 10:29 PM [SIZE="4"][B]4. Fish and Chips
That's Italian :)
Oops! MAYBE not, I thought it was, the Italians introduced it to Ireland apparently.
"In Ireland the first fish and chips were sold by an Italian immigrant, Giuseppe Cervi, who had stepped off an America-bound ship at Cobh and walked to Dublin. He started by selling fish and chips outside pubs from a handcart. He then found a permanent spot in Great Brunswick Street (now Pearse Street). His wife Palma would ask customers "Uno di questa, uno di quella?" This phrase (meaning "one of this, one of the other") entered the vernacular in Dublin as "one and one", which is still a common way of referring to fish and chips in the city.[7]"-Wikipedia
I'll research it.
