ajay ramchandran April 17th, 2010, 08:30 AM Doubtful whether the surathkal hotels are three star. Ginger I think officially is a budget hotel but all the ginger hotels have the same standards just like the comfort inn ,travel lodge in the UK and elsewhere. Some hotels claim to have 3 star facilities but have not officially got it as they have to fulfill certain criteria. three hotels in Mangalore have swimming pools ,Motimahal,Gateway and Goldfinch. Poonja Int was constructing it when I visited Mangalore in 2007.Ulllal summer sands and Lands flavour I think have swimming pools.Srinivas hotel officially got their 3 star vegetarian ratings from govt.

A few resorts near the city are situated at comfortable driving distance from the city. The newly opened Bgrow's Holiday Homes resort in Kumbra near Puttur is one hour drive while the Summer Sands beach resort of the Albuquerques in Ullal is less than half an hour drive. The new resort – ‘Land's flavour' coming up near Adyar promoted by Raghunandan Kamath of Natural Ice Cream of Mumbai is just 20 minutes drive and the evergreen Farm resort of Soans brothers in Moodbidri and the Turtle Bay beach resort at Trasi in Udupi district are some of the top rung resorts around the city.
The resorts in Mangalore have their own character. The Bgrow's is situated in rural area while the Summer Sands is a typical beach resort, the Land's Flavour derives its name from the local flavour - the tiled roofs, Guthu houses, cottages built in exposed laterite and is situated on the banks of the Nethravati river. The Soans farm resort is a 100 acres of farm lands which grows pineapple and atleast 50 other varieties of exotic fruits.

MANGALORE, March 22, 2010: Despite Mangalore being richly endowed with features good for world tourism the city has been given raw deal, the rich interplay of sea and rivers, lofty Western Ghats, expanses of beaches and a city that has a vibrant culinary traditions. But it appears that the government has started opening its eyes to the reality and has built a jungle lodge at Pilikula Nisarga Dhama at Moodushedde village about 19 kilometers from the city.
The Jungle Lodges which is a Karnataka tourism initiative is a prestigious organisations having facilities for high value tourists in various places of tourist interests. Dakshina Kannada despite being located in the lap of nature it is the first jungle lodge it has got.
The 10 room facility at Pilikula is situated on the edge of the mountain overlooking the Gurupur village and the Western Ghats, it gives a terrific scene of thousands of coconut palms, green fields and evergreen forests and the river meandering between them. According to the officials in the Jungle lodges the lodge is at the height of over 500 feet above sea level and the location was specially chosen for this facility.
However, the rates are exorbitant and a common man cannot afford it. It is priced between 2000-2500 per person per day and every room is equipped with Air-conditioning. The rates includes breakfast, lunch and dinner and those who are spirited kind can also have their drink at five star rates. The bookings for the Jungle lodge at Pilikula has begun and the response was luke warm say the officials.
But during the next tourist season mainly in the summer holidays and later during the Monsoons and towards the end of the year tourist flow might improve the officials say. Since Dakshina Kannada is hotspot for monsoon chasing tourism the Jungle lodge at Pilikula will provide an excellent spot with the rainforests of the Western Ghats was just an hour away.
A local circuit of sightseeing was also being worked out which includes the city ride and a safari of the Pilikula Nisarga Dhama and those who wanted to go deep into the Western Ghats can do so with the permission of the Forest Department. At this point of time only foreign travelers can afford the facility. It is customary for the Jungle lodges that there is a dormitory facilities for the youth and the common people, but this does not have those facilities.

Located in the coastal town of Mulki, just north of Mangalore, the “surfing ashram” is growing in popularity. It often hosts visitors from Mumbai, who escape the madness of the city by flying to Mangalore’s domestic airport, a flight that takes little more than an hour. City dwellers hole up in the ashram for a few days to enjoy the quiet and catch some waves.

engineer.akash May 25th, 2010, 09:27 PM Jungle Lodges comes to Pilikula
Bangalore, May 24 (IANS) Jungle Lodges & Resorts (JLR) of the state tourism department is expanding its operations in Karnataka to promote eco-tourism under public-private partnership, a top official said Monday.
"Besides opening up five more resorts in select tourist hot spots, we are inviting entrepreneurs from the health sector to set up health and wellness centres in strategic locations across the state to promote tourism in a holistic way," Jungle Lodges managing director N.D. Tiwari told reporters here.
The profit-making state-run agency is investing Rs.5-7 crore in each of the five resort projects over the next 12 months to create and expand capacity for stay and leisure activities.
"Our game plan is to see more natural vistas are opened up to travellers or tourists in the state and facilitate that they experience the rich flora and fauna, heritage, weekend getaways, wildlife and allied leisure in the state," Tiwari said.
The three-decade-old JLR operates 13 eco and wildlife resorts at exotic locations in the state, with about 80 percent occupancy rate round the year.
The new eco resorts are coming up at Vilaspur in Bidar district, Talakalale at Jog in Shimoga district, Hampi in Bellary district, Pilikula Nisarga Dhama in Mangalore district, at Khanapur in Belgaum district and Yagachi in Hassan district.
"Resorts at Vilaspur, Talakalale and Hampi will be completed by 2011, while those proposed at Khanapur and Yagachi are awaiting approval from the central government and the central zoo authority," Tiwari said.
In fiscal 2009-10, the resorts had about 80,000 guests, including 40 percent repeat customers.
Unlike in the past, the profile of guests has undergone a sea change, with domestic tourists accounting for 75 percent of the total guests.
"About 70 percent of the domestic tourists are from this tech hub comprising techies, executives, nature lovers and their families," Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) Managing Director Vinay Luthra said.
As the countrys largest eco and wildlife resort chain, JLR has been providing authentic nature experiences to travellers in idyllic settings.
Tatlers Travel Guide has rated JLRs Kabini River Lodge as one of the top wildlife resorts in the world.
The company is also developing a night safari in Bannerghata national park on the outskirts of Bangalore at an estimated cost of Rs.80 crore.
Though JLR survived the impact of slowdown last fiscal with a flat revenue generation of Rs.27 crore as against Rs.26 crore in previous fiscal (2008-09), it is projecting Rs.32 crore turnover this fiscal (2010-11), with about 90,000 guests.
The company posted Rs.4.24 crore net profit in fiscal 2009-10 as against Rs.4.02 crore in fiscal 2008-09.

Aloyseum’, at St. Aloysius College, has been renovated at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh
The centre of attraction remains the De Deon car, which was imported by P.F.X .Saldanha of Highland Coffee Works. Unused because of scarcity of petrol – there were no petrol stations in the city – the car has seen the likes of Sir Arthur Lawley, Governor of Madras, touring the district in it. The 8 HP car, could go only a maximum of 19 miles an hour, and was gifted to the museum in 1956.
The museum charges an entry fee of Rs. 5, and Mr. D’Silva hoped that the Museum would turn into a tourist attraction for those looking for a glimpse into the old Mangalore.

MANGALORE, MARCH 23:
Mangalore has showrooms of many automobile companies now. Hardly a few would know that the first car to land in Mangalore was a De Dion automobile.
Way back in 1906, the French-made De Dion was imported by P.F.X. Saldanha of Highland Coffee Works in Mangalore. As there was no petrol station in Mangalore then, the fuel had to be brought from Madras in 10-gallon drums and under special licence.
And if you want to have a glimpse of the car now, you have to visit the museum at St Aloysius College in Mangalore.

Vehiclular bridge is very much required between Bunder and Bengre. The population of Entire Bengre area(including Tannirbavi) is nearly 50,000.Other than this Hampankatta to Panambur/Surthkal/North Mangalore/Udupi is shortest via Bengre.Vast population from Mangalore city will shift to Bengre as it is close to Hampankatta and lot of land available.Tourism will also increase.

Had a gr8 pleasure at this bengre beach stretch last year in the month of April , took a govt operated boat service from bunder near fish market (wholesale) to reach bengre, journey took around 10min. Fare I think its around Rs 10-15 per person one way.
Access to the beachfront from the Jetty was like we had to walk thru a narrow passage thru residential area, then cricket ground ,again narrow passage to the rocks right on the beach, this place seems to be very much deserted, frightening.
Plz try this its really wonderful, walk all along these rocks up to 200mtr , u will find, at one spot all the 3 sides(180 deg) surround by sea, as if u r at the edge of the land facing towards endless blue sea, further walking will end up at bengre beach .
Locals said the last govt operated boat service to n from the mainland is around 8pm , I don't rem exactly.
A bridge connecting this land strip with the mainland is very much required and apart from that, the road access to the beach front from Bengre Boat jetty has to be improved .
I hav more pict of this place , soon I will try to upload these imgs.
I feel Bengre Beach can be developed into a big tourist spot .
Simialry ullal side should hav bridge concectivity right from spot were the sangam of gurupura and netravati river , elevated road from d above spot stretching all d way to ullal beach and then to Someshwara beach , if it happends , wondering how nice wld be sight seeing along this stretch .
its just a dream that's it.
Atleast they cld start a similar boat service to ullal side from bunder.

mangalore mania May 7th, 2013, 09:25 AM Coast along (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-youngworld/coast-along/article4691459.ece)
In Mangalore you come across the Someshwara beach. This is a rocky beach and the large rocks are called Rudra Shile. The Somnath temple which was constructed during the reign of Abbakka Devi is on the northern side.
The Ullal beach on the south side houses the ruined fort of Abbakka Devi and some 16{+t}{+h}century Jain temples. There is also a famous dargah here — the dargah of Sayed Mohammed Shereful Madani.
On the Mangalore — Udupi highway you will be dazzled by the Panambur beach. This beach stretches as far as Surathkal.
Surathkal is picturesque and also very clean. Near the beach is the temple of Sadashiva. There is also a big lighthouse which overlooks the Arabian Sea.
Finally, there is the Sasihithlu beach which is singular in its beauty. On one side is the Munda island which is surrounded by Shambhave and Nandini rivers and on the other side is the Arabian Sea.
mangalore mania May 20th, 2013, 10:32 AM Dusty road takes zing out of Panambur beach visit
MANGALORE: Every year lakhs of tourists from across the country and abroad arrive at Panambur beach on holidays. The Dakshina Kannada district administration has taken several initiatives in association with the department of tourism to tap the tourist potential of the beach. However the dusty approach road that connects the National Highway to the beach is a disappointment.
