Manila-X April 21st, 2010, 08:05 AM If there is one thing distinctive of Asian cities are the number of food stalls and eateries that can be found in alleyways or in the streets.
Let me see some images of streetside eateries around Asia.
Manila-X April 21st, 2010, 08:07 AM I'll start. HK has numerous food stalls in various alleys and sidewalks that serve some of its local cuisine. We call them

RonnieR April 21st, 2010, 08:34 AM In Indonesia, they call it "warung" and there's a lot esp. at night. I hope some of our friends can post the warung. :)
zhock2001 April 21st, 2010, 01:08 PM do we have a distinct name for that in the philippines??? i guess carenderia or turo-turo is the closest, i'm not sure if there is one specific term for that.. sadly i never really indulged in any treat in the streets in the philippines, though they really smell good...

hec2r-hec2r-activa8 April 21st, 2010, 01:47 PM ^^ is it because of the hygiene? :)
I like those stir fried noodles
I usually order and load it with hot chili pepper oil,
oyster sauce, soy sauce, etc...
And then sweat comes from all parts of my body
lohxy April 21st, 2010, 02:25 PM There's a place in Bukit Mertajam, Penang that the stalls are surrounding a temple. The foods there are delicious.
zhock2001 April 21st, 2010, 10:47 PM hygiene is one thing... though i'm really dying to try those. and yeah, i had also tried one of those noodles wherein you're the one who mixes the sauce according to your taste. but they're fairly new stuff, and not quite like any traditional "street food". in fact, i have tried it inside a shopping center in ortigas... but i've seen lots of it in the streets, so i guess it's still qialified here! heheh..
zhock2001 April 21st, 2010, 10:59 PM i hope our friends from bangkok could post their street foods here... lots of exciting and exotic stuff in there... but i also never tried any... vietnamese noodles served in the streets are interesting. i have tried "hu-tiw" before, i'm not sure if i remembered the name correctly though...
tollfreak April 22nd, 2010, 02:00 PM What I remember of street food in HK is fish-ball curry. For Bangkok, I remember sausages with thai-style chili on it. Here In Jakarta, the popular street food is usually Mie Ayam (Noodles with Chicken), Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice), Siomay (Fish Shumai), Bakso (Beef Balls), Sate (Chicken or Lamb Skewers) and Roti Bakar (roasted bread).

zhock2001 April 22nd, 2010, 10:41 PM i could try everything except for the...you know what..., bugs! and those sausages and barbeques look so delicious! just one question though, since there are lots of those bugs sold in the streets, is it considered an ordinary food? or is it also a sort of exotic food or taboo to some??? in the philippines we have dinuguan(made with blood), balut(several days old duck egg with the embryo in some advanced stage of development) and both could be considered ordinary but still many filipinos do not like them at the same time!
cHemon April 23rd, 2010, 04:18 AM ^^
I don't have the official number or something. But I think it's similar to your balut. Some people eat, some people don't.
Personally I don't. And most people around me also don't.
wino April 23rd, 2010, 05:20 AM Bangkok is making me hungry!!
hec2r-hec2r-activa8 April 23rd, 2010, 06:59 AM cHemon wow!
I wanna devour in all of those foods.
Humble NK April 23rd, 2010, 08:17 AM Insects are still considered as exotic food. You cannot find it everywhere like other food and you don't eat it daily. Besides, the material is rare. 90% of insects sold in Thailand is imported.
dochan April 23rd, 2010, 08:17 AM in the philippines we have dinuguan(made with blood)
Is this for real??
wynngd April 23rd, 2010, 12:58 PM ^^It is Swine's blood not Human Blood... hehehehe... I love eating street foods. It's on top of my To Do List whenever I go somewhere I've never been to.
hec2r-hec2r-activa8 April 23rd, 2010, 02:44 PM Is this for real??
Its for real but not for all Filipinos.
The Roman Catholic church which the majority of Filipino belongs
don't prohibit eating blood.
But as for the Protestant churches, it's prohibited because
according to the Bible, blood is the symbol of life,
It is the replacement to the fruit which was prohibited to human
during the times of Adam and Eve.
For me it does makes sense.
Did you know..
That the Holy Bible also prohibits eating the meat of double dead animals
or any animal in which the blood aren't drained immediately
after its death?
By the way I'm not a protestant.
wino April 24th, 2010, 01:56 AM Is this for real??
yes it is real. :D
it's either chicken or pig's blood.
i myself don't eat it.... but most pinoys do.. it's an exotic food yet very ordinary in the Philippines.
:D hehe
here is a picture for your reference
