New Delhi (Hindi: नई दिल्ली, Punjabi: ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ, Urdu: نئی دلی) is an urban area within the metropolis of Delhi that is the capital city of the Republic of India. New Delhi was planned by Edwin Lutyens, a leading 20th century British architect. It houses the Indian Government and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, making it the powerhouse of Indian politics.

Rapid June 19th, 2004, 06:41 PM New Dheli is not the best of India. That skyline is crap. Check out the Mumbai Skyline, wayyyy better
mauiboy63sea July 14th, 2004, 06:13 AM The skyline of New Delhi. Well, not surprising for a developing country. Perhaps it will get better as there is more infusion from multinational companies. For now I post 4.5.

kronik August 30th, 2004, 05:20 PM I think the one truly beautiful and grand part of Delhi is Lutyen's Delhi, which is the area housing the parliament, Government blocks, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace). The buildings are magnificent and the roads are very wide and of quality.
Otherwise Delhi has nothing but crumbling high rises from the 70's, although some new buildings are coming up and look great.
The traffic of Delhi is the worst in the world. The bus operators race with each other on the streets to get fastest to the next stop, and have taken many innocent lives, and yet nothing seems to be done. People have absolutely no lane sense. Every little space between cars at stop lights will be filled by motorbikes and scooters. Traffic in Delhi is ghastly.

New Delhi is a green, well-planned city which houses India's government buildings and monuments.
Old Delhi lies adjacent to New Delhi.
Both cities are sometimes collectively termed as "New Delhi", and have anyway grown into one city over time, and are sometimes known as just "Delhi" nowadays.
Get that clear, at least. What you see are a few grainy, low-quality pics of the government areas of New Delhi and some '70s hirises.
There's not much in terms of skyline in Delhi. But there's a lot of stunning architecture, no kidding. Check out the India florum for some better pics..
Worlds of Earth March 3rd, 2005, 02:09 PM The City authorities should promote that aspect of New Delhi, and maybe undertake some preservation efforts as well, mantainence and other necessary actions.

Lutyens' New Delhi is actually pretty well-preserved. The pictures here could be better. Other parts of the city, not as much so, but the government has recently launched a number of interesting initiatives with regard to the beautificiation of Old Delhi, more "touristy" stuff, and so on.

Jai March 6th, 2005, 11:16 AM It's kid of odd to have a 'rate my skyline' for New Delhi. ND has very restrictive building height regulations, and is designed to be a low-rise city.
Its like voting on the 'Washington DC skyline', which has similar height caps.
centralized pandemonium March 6th, 2005, 05:42 PM ^^^ Yeah, I agree.

MuddyZehbra32 March 6th, 2005, 08:22 PM I hate Dehli personally just because I had a most awful time vistiting their. everthing was just really dirty and I got really sick for 4 months. I thought most of the buildings were crumbly old and ugly and I am not a fan of Indian food. i only gave it a 5.5..thats really bad for me.

When did you visit? If it was anytime in the 1990s, I can understand. 1990s Delhi was hellishly polluted and dirty, and traffic was just killer.
A lot of Delhi's buildings are still crumbly, old and ugly. New ones are coming up slowly but surely. The government has a 2021 masterplan identifiying lots of areas for massive redevelopment, implementation of a proper public transport system, a comprehensive housing program and and so on. Today the pollution has gone down, the roads are smoother and cleaner, even traffic has improved and the government is overall doing a far better job now. Delhi is hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010, so there is a push to improve the city.
Indian food is your preference and your taste I guess. I can understand your not liking it. It's that way with food.
Anvers30 March 14th, 2005, 06:14 PM The skyline is not appropriate with population more than 10 mil. I give 5/10
MattSal March 14th, 2005, 11:01 PM Good, but lacks modernism and density. I give it a 7.5/10.

adidas October 7th, 2005, 01:46 PM The skyline is ok

This is because most of the skyscrapers were made in the early and mid 70s.

Jai October 12th, 2005, 05:47 PM New Delhi is an administrative center more or less frozen in development, with historical monuments, government offices, museums, parks, etc. Very little new development going on.
The new skylines and development are coming up in Delhi proper, and satellite cities like Noida, Gurgaon, etc. which have only started developing this year. Give them 6-8 years, and you'll have a skyline befitting that of the Delhi metro region.
Till then, New Delhi should be looked at for what it is, an incredible and unique cultural and governmental center.
Jai October 12th, 2005, 06:14 PM Here are some pictures. Most of them are 5-8 years old and of very poor quality. Yet, these are the photos that Google brings the first :|
When I get the time, I will post more modern pics, hi-res pics of Delhi soon.

- White, green and blue mosaic tiles
- Built by Ansals
- Name was Amba or Ambika or something, can't remember
Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'd love to see some pictures.

kashyap3 July 19th, 2006, 01:38 AM frankly NDelhi lacks a skyline, because municipal governments and companies see no need in vertical sprawl when there is so much land available. so offices buy large pieces of cheap land and build 10 storey complexes instead of a small piece of congested expensive land with 50 storeys

Jai April 23rd, 2007, 07:17 AM Guys, New Delhi is never going to have any supertalls. It's a historic district, much like Washington DC, with very strict zoning, height, etc. restrictions.
However, there are several commerical nodes outside New Delhi, but within the Delhi urban amagalmation that are planning CBDs, skyscrapers and even supertalls.
However, the old city of Delhi has recently approved a far-reaching re-development plan, called Delhi 2021. You can read this thread for more information:

cheeps December 20th, 2007, 11:04 PM Sorry...I give Delhi a rating of a 3. Believe me...that's very generous.
Mahratta December 20th, 2007, 11:12 PM if this was a rate the city poll Delhi would get 10/10 from me for being so steeped in history and evolving rapidly
However the skyline isnt anything major and will never be able to match other Indian cities in the future, 6.5/10
Hindustani December 20th, 2007, 11:37 PM There reason why New Delhi will not have an awesome superhighrise skyline is simple. It is part of huge humongous National Capital Region where its sister cities like Gurgaon & NOIDA (remember NOIDA Tower) are reaching the skies.
