Calcutta

Population: 7,780,544

Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and is the second largest city by area in India, after Mumbai. It is located in eastern India on the east bank of the River Hooghly. When referred to as "Kolkata", it usually includes the suburbs, and thus its population exceeds 15 million, making it India's third-largest city and urban agglomeration. This also makes it the world's 8th largest metropolitan area.

Calcutta served as the capital of India during the British Raj until 1911. Once the centre of modern education, industry, science, culture and politics in India, Kolkata has witnessed intense political violence, clashes and economic stagnation since 1954. Since the year 2000, economic rejuvenation has spurred on the city's growth. Like other metropolitan cities in India, Kolkata continues to struggle with the problems of urbanisation: poverty, pollution and traffic congestion.

Calcutta is noted for its revolutionary history, ranging from the Indian struggle for independence to the leftist and trade union movements.

Those pics don't show the full skyline.

If you see Kolkata from the Second Hooghly bridge it is almost 3 kms long. Although the average height is just 12 storeys it is pretty breathtaking. Having seen many skylines, I can safely say that this one deserves at least a 6/10.

6/10 at the moment.

But yeah.. city is growing rapidly. Till sometimes back the tallest building was 27 storeyed high. Now, it has some projects which are about 40 stories high. I am sure in next 10-15 years the city will have some really huge skyscrapers. I would want to see Calcutta to regain its pre colonial era glory when it was amongst the the top ten cities in the world.

As with many Indian Subcontinental cities, the traditional architecture is great but the skyline really isn't impressive! Especially for a city metro of 14 million people! 5/10 at most for the skyline

I think some of the pictures don't do Calcutta any justice. I think an aerial shot will do it very well. Some pics look like it has little buildings when in fact alot of tall buildings are being constructed.
