Yep, most recent ABS figures are 140,600 as of June 30, 2003.

So that's almost a year ago, and if it has continued the same average annual growth rate from the past 5 years (2.3%), it is probably about 143,800 now.

Blend, the population on SS.com is probably only the population for Townsville City, whereas Townsville is actually made of both Townsville & Thuringowa Cities. Townsville is named after a bloke named Robert Towns and is the largest city in Northern Australia.

We only have a little skyline with 4 skyscrapers built but 4 more currently proposed (not on SS.com yet). The tallest you can see in the pictures is an icon for the city, known locally as the sugar shaker. It is the Holiday Inn and was built in 1977.

The surroundings are great, but the skyline isn't much, 4/10...

It is a nice city currently a little lacking in the skyline department, but with all these projects it should be quite a bit better in a few years time.

It's hard to give Townsville such a low rating, as one of my favourite cities in Oz, but its skyline is lacking, and I do have a dislike for the dominance of the sugar or salt shaker on the skyline. I am looking froward to the new apartment towers to start arriving and making an impact, to give the city a skyline it truly deserves, and one that can put Cairns to shame :)

I think Townsville missed out on a lot of construction activity in the nineties when Cairns was getting that, and as a city that is really only now starting to show off its size and growth I believe the skyline should rate a 7.5 or so in the next few years.

On the technicalities of its 6.5 rating, it has a bit of height, but lacks in density and a well-defined focal point. Its buildings also appear to be too old, ie not too much recent development.

I like Townsville, to be honest there isn't a great skyline but the town itself is cool. When I was in Oz people were always saying how Cairns was the place to go in north QLD and Townsville was dull. I found Cairns to be pretty boring, full of backpackers and US marines and generally not too nice but I much preferred Townsville, Magnetic Island is really nice and laid-back too!

I'll give it an 8.5 even if the skyline doesn't really deserve it ;)

Yeah, in a few years time the skyline will be much better. :)

There are quite a few cranes on the skyline at the moment, the whole CBD is like a construction zone. :)

6/10 That hotel- salt shaker thing is one of the ugliest stuctures I have ever seen.
And yes I have seen it with my own eyes, someone should C4 it.

A few more of Townsville, There is also a construction picture of one of Townsville bigins, Which is Dalgety at 20 stories. Townsville is going very very strong at the moment, nearly 16 tower cranes in and around the city. The city is regional Australias fastest growing city with Townsville having more Towers cranes that Adelaide which is a capital city housing a population over 1 million whilst Townsville has a population of 200k. There are LOTS of Towers being built in Townsville at present and will be pretty cool to see the skyline within the next two years because it wont be anything like these pictures. Ill post more later :D.

Wow, been ages since I visited this thread. And Sean, please take note, this is Rate Our SKYLINES! Don't just spam the thread with every photo of anything in Townsville you can lay your hands on. And this isn't the place to put all your construction photos. I mean a photo of the cabin of a crane? A dead tree??!! The entrance to a department store??!! A f^&$ing ibis??!! Yeesh!

I think it looks like a nice little city i give it 7/10 coz i think it's not a bad skyline for the size of this city. I wish my city had a climate more like townsville. I live in leeds in the UK and it's cold,damp and dull today.
