Well public public space. Seem huge to me and will devide up the city in ways but development around it would be grand. Still such big open spaces what change for the dust bowl that has always been there. If all the sand is paved over maybe this will forever change the wind storm and the like form this area

Dh120m edutainment centre to be set up

http://82.195.132.90/news/article_pics/13639.jpg

A spaceship-themed edutainment centre will be built at a cost of Dh120 million at the upcoming Zabeel Technology Theme Park. Set to open in early 2006, the Stargate Family Edutainment Centre when completed will attract around one million people annually to the facility. The edutainment centre will cover 260,000 square feet and will have part of the facilities underground.

The complex will include retail kiosks, exhibition wings, dining outlets, coffee shops, a children's education academy and nursery. The centre will have five dome-shaped fun zones – Saturn, Mars, Earth, a UFO zone and the moon. A pair of two aliens, Ajeeb and Gareeb, will be the hosts at the centre. The centre will have a capacity for 5,000 visitors.

In Saturn, families can enjoy the integrated and futuristic 80x40-foot 3D theatre, where edutainment experiences are brought to life via advanced laser shows.

Mars contains a children's play area called ‘Zero Gravity' that includes a roller skating track, climbing walls, a room for birthday parties as well as a colourful fun area for younger children. Earth has an electric indoor go-karting track called ‘No Speed Limit'.

The futuristic UFO zone contains a brand new robotic simulated ride and sophisticated 4D virtual reality rides; while the Moon will house a lunar ice-skating rink, with artificial snow falling every 30 minutes on the moon-style landscape.

The underground area also houses the Stargate Academy which offers pre-scheduled classes in classical arts, information technology, music and martial arts along with a world-class nursery. The under-construction Zabeel Park is set to be the largest technology theme park in the Middle East.

The municipality investment for the park is more than Dh300 million, while overall investments, including from the private sector is tipped to exceed Dh1 billion.

A much better view on the way from 'Old' Dubai to 'New' Dubai rather than those rolling sand dunes. The greenery will make such a difference to the area. I think they even have a small park behind Al Salam planned. The area is already fenced off with a plan for the park. Will c if i can get that.

But seriously, they should consider putting a security guard there because this looks like the ideal new place for suicides.

Technology theme park to be ready by May

Dubai: Zabeel Park, the first technology-themed park in the Gulf, is expected to be ready by May, according to planners at Dubai Municipality.

Nearly three quarters of the work has been completed at the Dh200 million park, which will also feature private investments of millions of dirhams.

A team of planners toured the site yesterday, led by Rashad Bukhash, director of the General Projects Department and senior officials of the department who had been asked to make an inspection by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality.

Many of the project's major landmarks, such as an amphitheatre, pedal-boat lake and lakeside restaurant, have been completed.

The park, which will feature a space maze and a 3-D cinema among other things, is being built on 47 hectares with financing from the public and private sectors.

The municipality is spending about Dh200 million to develop the infrastructure of the park, and it has so far attracted more than Dh300 million in private investment.

This figure is likely to reach Dh500 million once a number of additional projects are developed.

The park, which will be a major attraction for both residents and tourists, will be a place for entertainment and education for people of all ages. Zabeel Technology Theme Park was conceived and developed through a series of studies and design phases. "It is to be the premier regional park in Dubai and will provide a themed recreation and leisure facility of an international standard," Bukhash said.

"Zabeel Park will be different from other parks due to the recurring technology theme. It will provide a relaxing environment for rest and recreation as you would expect from any park, but it will also provide interesting and educational attractions."

Zabeel Park is located on three separate plots between the Trade Centre, Karama and Zabeel Road. The park will feature a series of high-tech interactive displays, including educational and recreational exhibits grouped into three zones: alternative energy zone, communications zone and techno zone.

The alternative energy zone will offer a series of interactive exhibits de-monstrating the various forms of alternative energy - water, sun and wind.

A centrally located function area called the Mega-bowl has been designed as an amphitheatre with a capacity of 2,000.

A lake will be the central feature of the southern portion of the park and will be filled by a stream cascading down four-metre high natural rock weirs. A fleet of pedal and rowing boats will be available for hire.

The UAE's first cable-stayed pedestrian bridge is being built in Dubai at a cost of Dh6.5 million on Shaikh Zayed Road.

The new bridge, which is part of the Zabeel Technology Park project, will connect two sections of the new Zabeel Park, said a Gulf news report.

"The elegant span and pylon of the first cable-stayed bridge in the UAE will add a new landmark to the skyline of Dubai," the report quoted Badr Al Gergawi, head of the roads construction section at Dubai Municipality, as saying.

Al Gergawi said the cable-stayed design, with its 52-metre high central pylon, 16 wire ropes and elegant slender bridge girder with free spans of more than 65 metres, will allow pedestrians to cross the 10 lanes and slip roads of Shaikh Zayed Road as well as Zabeel Palace underpass to connect Park A and B of the Zabeel Park Project.

The bridge girder was of a composite design incorporating steel main girders and a hollow cross-section concrete deck, he said.

The park, the first technology-themed one in the Gulf, is expected to be ready by May. About 70 per cent of the Dh200 million park has already been completed. The park will feature a space maze and a 3-D cinema.

The Dubai municipality is spending about Dh200 million to develop the park's infrastructure and it has attracted more than Dh300 million private sector investment to develop high-tech facilities for visitors.

Dh200m Zabeel Park is nearing completion
By Zaigham Ali Mirza

11 April 2005
http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/theuae/2005/April/theuae_April377.xml&section=theuae&col=

DUBAI — Works on the Dh200 million Zabeel Park project, the first technology-theme park in the region, which is also attracting private investment of several hundred million dirhams, is nearing completion. The major recreational facility is expected to be ready next month.

Most of the project’s major landmarks including an amphitheatre, boating lake and lakeside buildings and other structures have already been completed. A major attraction for visitors and an addition to the city’s skyline is the pedestrian bridge over Shaikh Zayed Road that connects two of the three sections of the Zabeel Park.

The elegant span and pylon of the first cable-stayed bridge in the UAE is also virtually complete. With its 52-metre-high central pylon, 16 wire ropes and an elegant, slender bridge girder with free spans of more than 65 metres, allow to cross the 10 lanes and slip roads of Shaikh Zayed Road and the Zabeel Palace Underpass at the required slanting angle needed to connect Park A and B of the project. The bridge was built by Dubai Municipality’s Roads Department under a design-and-build contract, at a total cost of Dh6.5 million. A sophisticated lighting system is to further enhance the beautiful lines of the new bridge.

The park, which will feature a space maze and a 3-dimensional cinema among other things, is built on 47 hectares with financing from the public and private sectors. The civic body spent about Dh200 million to develop the infrastructure of the park, and it has so far attracted over Dh300 million in investment from the private sector to develop high-tech facilities for visitors. The investment from the private sector is likely to exceed Dh500 million as a number of investments are in the process of being developed. So far investment from the private sector has been very encouraging, with the municipality awarding several projects such as the Dh100 million Star Gate, an 'edutainment' facility with a many educational and fun activities for both youngsters and adults, and the gymnasium at the Sports Club House, which was undertaken by another private company at a total cost of Dh25 million.

Commenting on the project recently, Rashad Bukhash, Director of General Projects Department at the civic body, said: "It is to be the premier regional park in Dubai and will provide a themed recreation and leisure facility of international standard."

The park will be different from other similar recreational facilities because of the recurring technology theme, he said, adding that it will provide a relaxing environment to unwind and offer recreational facilities as one would expect from any park, but will also provide interesting, educational attractions. One of the highlights of the project is a space maze modelled after the planetary system and other technology-based attractions. Featuring a contemporary and futuristic style, that will give it an individual and vibrant character, the park will have an infrastructure that is functional and visually appealing. Other features of the project include a pedal-boat lake and lakeside restaurant; a sports centre and exhibition gallery; a mini-golf course, a skateboard park and a jogging track; barbecue facilities; shaded seating and play areas and refreshment kiosks.

Alternative energy zone will offer a series of interactive exhibits demonstrating the different forms of alternative energy from water, sun and wind. Many of the exhibits will allow park visitors to compete against one another on teams to demonstrate their effectiveness at harnessing different forms of alternative energy.

Zabeel Park, the first technology-based theme park in the Gulf, is expected to boost domestic and international tourism in Dubai, said Mattar Al Tayer, Deputy Director General of Dubai Municipality.

He made the comments while making an inspecting tour of the Dhs200 million project's worksite along with senior officials of the municipality.

Works of the project have already been completed and the park will play host to one of the largest festive occasions of the emirate on its opening day later this year.

The General Projects Department of Dubai Municipality has completed the construction work of the park in record eighteen months. The park, located between Dubai Trade Centre and Al Karama, is spread across an area of 51 hectares and comprises a number of provisions including food courts, a cricket pitch, amphitheatre, exhibition centres and special facilities for boating inside the lake.

'Zabeel Park will become a major tourist attraction in Dubai once it is inaugurated. The park has something to offer to each visitor,' Al Tayer noted.

'There is plenty of playing area for children in the form of tot lots, while adults can spend their time sitting in the lakeside restaurants and enjoy the scenic beauty of the park,' he added.

The park has been divided the park into three zones of 281,000 square metres, 162,000 square metres and 22,000 square metres to distinguish one zone from the other by providing plenty of attractions. All these zones are connected by a road train which transports visitors from one zone to the other. The main attraction of the park will be a mega bowl which will be used for organising multi-purpose activities including weddings, parties, birthday functions and other events associated with colleges and business establishments.

Apart from functions, Mega Bowl will be used to conduct exhibitions and shows from time to time. Terraced seating arrangement in the mega bowl will accommodate 2,000 people at a time.

A mini cricket field to conduct cricket matches also forms part of the Zabeel Park. Though not as big as a cricket ground, the mini cricket field with a standard pitch and lush green outfield promises to provide plenty of entertainment to the cricket crazy expatriates from the Indian sub-continent.

The other important features of the park include a jogging track of 4.3 kilometres surrounding the park with soft and hard landscaping of approximate width 12 metres. The track will prove a boon to the morning walkers from the surrounding localities of Karama and Sheikh Zayed Road. A number of date palm trees along with water fountains will dot the lush green park in the heart of the city.

The park also has three sister city monuments in the form of Geneva and Gold Coast, Istanbul and Osaka. The city monuments were incorporated in the park as part of sister city agreements between Dubai Municipality and the cities of Geneva, Istanbul and Osaka.

Osus to invest Dh200m in Zabeel Park project

By Saifur Rahman, Staff Reporter

Dubai:
Osus, a new development company, is investing Dh200 million in a new theme park, Stargate, located at Zabeel Park, said its top official.

Stargate is a hi-tech mid-size and mixed-use themed family entertainment centre. Once completed, the project's terrace and five domes will be visible to the park's visitors, as the main body pf the 'spaceship' will lie underground.

Zabeel Park, which covers 52 hectares, is being masterplanned and developed by Dubai Municipality, which last year awarded the construction contract to Dubai-based contractors Engineering Contracting Company (ECC).

International Project Development Co (IPDC), a new investment company incorporated in Dubai Media City, is behind the project. Mike Hakim, executive director, told Gulf News, "Some of the infrastructure works have already started on site. This is a new development, themed around space and spacecraft for the children's entertainment."

"As a Dubai Municipality park, there will be a nominal entrance fee, while we will be charging for each ride in the park," he said. "However, this hasn't been finalised."

Dubai Muncipality has already built the basic infrastructure within the park, gates, parking space, a paedestrian flyover to commute between the two components of the park separated by a highway close to the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Talal Abu Ghazaleh and Co has carried out the feasibility study and Ernest and Young is the project's financial advisor. Kling Consult have been appointed the main consultant while KCC is expected to carry out interior designs.

Osus launches multi-million dollar Stargate project

Osus, one of the region's most forward thinking multi-disciplinary real estate development companies, today launched Stargate a unique hi-tech, mid-size and mixed-use themed family edutainment centre, located in the heart of Zabeel Park.

http://www.ameinfo.com/images/news/7/17617-faisal.jpg
Faisal Bin Abdullah Al Khaldi, CEO, Osus.

Dubai-based Osus will Build Operate Transfer (BOT) on behalf of and in partnership with Stargate owners, Dubai Municipality. The project is due for completion in December 2006. Stargate family edutainment centre is designed with the ideal mix of world class education and wholesome family entertainment.

The project is constructed and themed in the form of a spaceship and covers a total area of 260,000 square feet in the jewel of Dubai parks, Zabeel Park.

Commenting on the project Faisal Bin Abdullah Al Khaldi, CEO, Osus said, 'Stargate family edutainment center is designed to enhance healthy family bonds. This world-class project of unparalleled magnitude will herald the high-tech future of education fun and entertainment, or as we call it edutainment'.

The overall concept was created around two animated characters called Ajeeb and Ghareeb, who captain a spaceship code named Stargate. Disorientated and lost they ask the on-board computer to find the most dynamic location on the best planet in the whole galaxy and the computer directs the spaceship to Dubai, landing rather heavily in Zabeel Park, with half of the spaceship lodged underground. The adventures and antics of Ajeeb and Ghareeb will form the cornerstone of Stargate's marketing strategy, which will naturally be driven towards both children and adults but specifically teenies and tweenies, those around the 4 - 14 age range.

The main attractions are spread across five domes of fun, each one offering a unique experience. Inside one dome is 'D3D' hi-tech edutainment theatre offering laser shows, 2D immersive video, 3D shows, 3D interactive games and corporate events, whilst 'Lunar Snow' leads children into a world beyond imagination where they can have fun with real snow all year round. They also have 'Zero Gravity' kids zone where kids can enjoy rock-wall climbing, roller-skating or the ultimate in soft indoor rides. There is also 'No Speed Limit' a high-speed electric Go-Karting and a head-spinning family rollercoaster appropriately called the 'Spinning Earth' along with the '9D Journey' a 2D + 3D + 4D virtual rides in a row with one admission.

Other features include, the Children's Academy, the Bermuda Triangle of hi-tech mazes and the fun filled Leisure Triangle. An ideal social rendezvous, Stargate offers a multi-cuisine food court under a magnificent glazed pyramid which provides a natural ambience, both day and night. A combination of internationally recognized cafes and health bars are also located throughout the complex.

Five corridors or wings of the spaceship provide exhibition and retail spaces on various captivating themes. The 500 meter 'Foot Coaster' is Dubai's first completely indoor jogging, walking and cycling track in a climate-controlled environment.

Another unique attraction is the train at the basement level which runs along the entire outer perimeter stopping at each Dome, which is an alternative and fun way of transporting families around the circumference of the spaceship. Stargate also houses the 'Space Mall' offering a complete shopping experience exclusively for children in a futuristic setting.

All staff members are easily recognizable in their spaceship themed space uniforms and for extra security and safety children can obtain a 'locator device' worn as a watch or pendant. Parents can then locate their children via special terminals strategically positioned throughout the complex.

The multi-million dollar project was the brain child of Maher Hakim, Executive Director of Osus, the project developers and operators, who said, 'This project is the future of family edutainment, it was born out of a keen sense of social responsibility and strong community values. Stargate is a fantastic opportunity, which yields intense fun, constructive learning coupled with positive social returns for the whole community'.

Zabeel Park: High-tech spec meets the ‘green’ revolution

http://www.itp.net/pictures/features/92proj200.gif
High -tech spec: Dubai Municipality has created a series of interactive displays, including educational and recreational exhibits, grouped into three separate parks.

For those in search of a touch of green to break up the urban sprawl of Dubai, the new Zabeel Park will no doubt be met with a sigh of relief.

When the US $51 million (AED186 million) 46-hectare park throws open its gates to the public in November it will become the newest of the city’s public parks. Having already developed a number of well-liked green spaces, including Jumeirah Park, Safa Park, and Al Mamzar Park, Dubai Municipality was under pressure to create something that would maintain these high standards, while at the same time offer something different.

To meet this end, the Municipality adopted a high-technology theme making it the first recreational park of its kind to be developed in the region.

The theme means that the park features a series of high-tech interactive displays including educational and recreational exhibits grouped into three separate parks.
Park A is the largest of the three parks and covers an approximate area of 281 000 m2.

Four gatehouse buildings, each with their own water feature, provide access to the park, and within it there are four major elements: a sports area, the star gate, an amphitheatre, and a gallery and pizza building for displays and exhibitions. The amphitheatre was created with 8-m high mounds of earth to create terraced seating for 2000 spectators.

The sports zone includes a jogging track that runs round both parks A and B, playgrounds for small children, and an adventure area for older children.

The original plans included an IMAX theatre, which was scrapped in favour of the Star Gate. This feature is still under construction and will be completed as part of a separate contract after the rest of the park opens. The building will have five planets, linked together by underground tunnels with each planet offering a different activity.

Aside from numerous smaller exhibits, play areas, water features, and barbeque areas, Park A also features the ‘Barcode Garden’, which includes hi-tech displays and water features, kiosks and runs through into Park B.

Park B is connected to Park A by a cable-stayed bridge.
There are three bridges altogether, with one running between Park B and Park C and another linking Park A to Karama.
The bridges will be for pedestrians and road trains (tyred train-like vehicles), that will ferry visitors around the park.
Park B is the middle park of the three and covers
162 000 m2.

It contains a number of facilities for a number of activities, the largest being a boating lake with 30-m geyser fountain and a lakeside restaurant. “The geyser will be a major feature of the parks,” says Ben White, associate, Al Khatib Cracknell.

Other facilities include a BMX circuit, mini golf, skateboarding park, assault course and adventure playground.
There is also another sports zone that will include a fenced-off cricket pitch for competitive matches, an assault course and more play areas for children.

The smallest of the three parks, Park C, covers 22 000 m2 and includes a paved area for general purpose events and functions. It has a permanent stage, space for large tents and is fully floodlit. “Lighting is an important element of the whole park because most people will use the park at night,” says White. “The whole park really comes to life at night,”
he adds.

The 4.5 km-long aluminium fence that runs around the boundary and the park’s 2300 parking spaces, were completed as part of an earlier contract.

The majority of the works involved land filling, and in total, some 800 000 m3 of earth was used. “A lot of fill material had to be imported, and in the first four to five months of
the project the majority of the works were earthmoving,”
says White.

Once the levels were resolved, excavation for the various services that run through the park could begin, like drainage, power and water. A sub surface drainage system was needed because the of the high water table in the area.

Construction of the parks began in August 2003 with Al Khatib Cracknell as lead consultants, WS Atkins as architecture and
MEP consultants, ECC as the main contractor. Orient is the
landscaping contractor.

Which incidentally maintains the sites original purpose, which was to host royal weddings. I remember when they had Sheikh Mo's wedding celebrations there. The plot of land was officially a royal wedding ground, so it is nice to see that concept being preserved and carried forward in the new development.

Landscaping firms face a bright and ‘green’ future across Dubai

http://www.itp.net/pictures/features/100prod200.gif
Zabeel Park: Dubai’s newest green development is an important illustration of how landscaping services are much-needed across the Middle East.
completed projects and beautification schemes bring contractors running in looking for slice of the action
Creating lush and verdant landscapes in the arid, inhospitable climate of the Gulf was never going to be an easy task.

Apart from cacti and palm trees, few indigenous species can withstand the blistering heat, low rainfall and salt-laden winds that blow along the Arabian Gulf.

But with more of the region’s construction projects edging towards completion, landscape designers and contractors are having to find new ways to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the bid to go green.

“There are plants that are adapted to growing in this type of environment,” says Paul Cracknell, director of Dubai-based landscape architects, Al Khatib Cracknell.

“But they’re generally low-growing desert-type species with small canopies, which are not particularly useful for creating Western-style recreational parks that require an extensive and diverse flora and fauna including grass, shade trees and flowering shrubs.”

One way to achieve the desired landscaping effect is to create microclimates that provide a combination of shade and shelter from the elements.

The trick is to create shade by using nurse species of plants that ‘nurse’ the tenderer, less hardy plants underneath them. By using more tolerant shrubs to reduce the wind, less hardy plants can survive as they are protected from the harsh winds and direct sunlight.

Atomised irrigation is another method of outdoor climatic control, and involves spraying water into the air. As the water evaporates, it reduces the ambient temperature so certain plants can survive a lot better.

“Every plant is different, so it’s important to understand which plants will survive under which conditions,” explains Cracknell. “Over the last 10 years we’ve evolved a palette of plants suited to this region that originally was some 50 species, and is now between 350 and 500 species.”

In terms of planting, he says it’s a case of continually trying new species. “You can make an educated guess in terms of what plants you think will grow well, but until you actually put them in the ground, you can never be sure,” he adds.

According to Cracknell, some of the most challenging projects come in the form of the region’s beachfront resort hotels, which require a very high level of amenity landscaping: “They need to be very attractive and diverse in terms of planting, but they’re in very harsh locations right by the sea.”

Al Khatib Cracknell has landscaped many beachfront projects in Dubai including Jumeirah Beach Resort, Wild Wadi and the Burj Al Arab. The firm is currently working on landscaping the Palm Jumeirah.

“As well as the issues of salt-laden high winds, beachfront projects often have monolithic high buildings nearby which create wind currents and eddying.” To counter this, wind studies are carried out to determine where best to place certain landscaping features, such as planting trees to break up the wind flow.

Turf also poses a particular challenge to the region’s landscape designers — especially when it comes to selecting turf suitable for the region’s ever-growing number of golf courses.

Traditionally Bermuda grass and hybrid varieties of it were used, but most of the amenity grass here now is paspallum, a salt-tolerant grass that can grow in twice the salinity of seawater.

Soil — or the lack of it — can be another tricky area. Rather than using very expensive imports of peat and seaweed for additives, a cheaper option is using the local clean-washed sand along with wadi sand that has high clay content and forms a better soil mix. Locally generated compost can then be added along with slow release chemical fertilisers.

“There is a continual evolution in terms of soil additives as well as new developments in water auditing — monitoring the amount of irrigation water that’s put into the ground so you give the plant exactly what it needs,” says Cracknell.

Strange as it may sound, over-watering is often an issue in this part of the world. “One of the biggest problems I’ve found here is over-watering or incorrect watering, as opposed to not enough water,” says Jim Hynes, general manager of Fitco Industry’s irrigation division. “There’s a lot of water wasted here through inefficient irrigation techniques.”

Hynes believes one of the reasons for this water wastage is a reluctance to try out new techniques.

“Landscape irrigation is quite conservative here in the Middle East — people are not very interested in trying out new ideas and ultimately the client’s paying the price in terms of water usage. If you over-water or water incorrectly, the landscape doesn’t respond well and requires additional maintenance.”

There is a range of computer-based systems available to ensure irrigation is precisely controlled, such as WIDC (Windows Irrigation Data Controller). This central satellite control system is loaded with software and connected to a phone line or radio transmitter out to a network of controllers in the field.

“WIDC can handle up to 999 controllers; each of these can handle up to 48 stations; and each station handles up to 20 valves — so that’s just under 1 million valves,” explains Hynes. This provides the system with very large control capabilities (up to several cities) from a single software location.

Normal irrigation controllers in the field distribute a certain quantity of water — the application rate is calculated and the controller is then set by time. But this method doesn’t take into account changes in watering requirements — one day the plants may need 10 mm of water, but the next day may be humid and the day after that could be windy and dry.

To get around this inflexible system of irrigation programming, Fitco offers a hi-tech system that waters in conjunction with an evapro-transpiration sensor. “This measures the moisture taken up into the atmosphere from a plant, so when we program our controllers we’re able to run in parallel with the weather conditions on any particular day,” says Hynes.

It’s not just the region’s climate and topography that influences trends in the landscaping market — the new property laws in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are having a noticeable impact on the domestic landscaping sector.

According to Bruce Pedersen, general manager at Dubai Garden Centre, the domestic side of their business has really picked since the new leasehold laws were introduced.
“We’re booked up months in advance and aren’t taking any work until March or April next year,” he says.

Pedersen says the laws have prompted a lot of people to spend a lot of money on their gardens: “There’s no set industry amount of how much to spend on your garden in relation to the value of your property here,” he explains.

“In the UK, for instance, you don’t spend more than 10% on
your garden, but here there’s no average figure because the industry is so new.”

Today’s landscape designers and contractors employ a range of hi-tech applications to help create and maintain the desired effects.

Tensiometres, wind tunnel studies and computer-aided irrigation are all used in a bid to keep up with the demand for landscaping roads, hotels and office tower developments.

But while the region’s commercial landscaping market is already in full swing, the domestic sector looks poised to take off thanks to the new leasehold laws — proving that this is not a place to let the grass grow under your feet.

Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum opens Zabeel Park
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, opened on Tuesday Zabeel Park, the first technology-based recreational theme park in the Gulf.

The park, located on three separate plots to the north east of the Dubai World Trade Centre and bounded by Trade Centre Road, Al Quta'eyat Road and Za'abeel Road, is aimed at boosting domestic and international tourism in Dubai.

The opening ceremony was attended by Qassim Sultan, Director General of Dubai Municipality, senior government officials from local departments and the municipality.

The park is divided into three plots, all of which are interlinked by pedestrian bridges.
Sultan said the Dh200 million park comprises a number of provisions including food courts, a cricket pitch, amphitheatre, exhibition centres and special facilities for boating.

"Zabeel Park will become a major tourist attraction in Dubai. The park has something to offer each visitor," he said.

With an overall area of 47.5 hectares the park has been designed with a technology theme that reflects the current status of Dubai as a regional centre for the development of high technology and IT industries. Zabeel Park will provide a themed recreation and leisure facility of international standard, for the enjoyment of both local residents and visitors.

To reflect and maximise the technology theme, the park features a series of high tech interactive displays including educational and recreational exhibits grouped into three zones (Alternative Energy zone, Communications zone and Techno zone) as well as a maze modelled on the planetary system and other technology based attractions. In combination with these elements, the park features a contemporary and futuristic style that provides the park with an individual, vibrant and unique character, unseen before in other parks of Dubai.

The infrastructure of the park is functional and visually appealing in its own right, and incorporates a wide range of facilities such as a boating lake and lakeside restaurant; a sports centre; and exhibition gallery; an activity area including mini golf, adventure play, a skateboard park and a BMX track; informal recreation areas, barbeque facilities, shaded seating and play areas and refreshment kiosks.

There are plenty of play areas for children, while adults can spend their time sitting at the lakeside restaurants and enjoying the scenic beauty of the park. The park has been divided into three zones of 281,000 square metres, 162,000 square metres and 22,000 square metres.

The main attraction of the park is a mega bowl, which will be used for organising multi-purpose activities including weddings, parties, birthday functions and other events associated with college and business establishments.

Apart from functions, the mega bowl can be used for conducting exhibitions and shows from time to time. A terraced seating arrangement in the mega bowl will accommodate 2,000 people at any one time.

A mini-cricket pitch also forms part of Zabeel Park. Although not as big as a cricket ground, the mini-cricket field with a standard pitch and outfield promises to provide plenty of entertainment for cricket fans.

The other important features of the park include a jogging track of 4.3 kilometres surrounding the park with soft and hard landscaping of approximate width 12 metres. A number of date palm trees along with water fountains will dot the lush green park in the heart of the city.

The park will also feature a series of high-tech interactive displays including educational and recreational exhibits grouped into three zones.
The park also has three sister city monuments in the form of Geneva, Gold Coast and Istanbul. The city monuments were incorporated in the park as part of sister city agreements between Dubai Municipality and the cities of Geneva, Istanbul and Gold Coast. In the next phase, there will be monuments for the other nine cities with which Dubai has signed sister cities agreements.

The 200 square meter Exhibition Gallery, situated on the main piazza opposite the restaurant, will provide a flexible internal exhibition space which can be used for a variety of exhibitions, by local school and community groups, private companies and by Dubai Municipality. Exhibitions can include a wide range of interests from sculpture and painting to promotions, such as product launches for computers cars or mobile phones, as well as educational displays on innovations from the world of science and technology.

Boating Lake: The ornamental boating lake is the central feature of the southern part of the park and will be filled from a stream cascading down a series of natural rock weirs from a height of 4.0m. A mix of pedal, rowing and battery powered motor boats will be available for hire. An island is incorporated into the design of the lake with a pathway access over two bridges to a lakeside viewing gazebo. A 'geyser' fountain will be a central feature within the lake which will erupt to a height of 20 metres once every twenty minutes.

Lakeside Restaurant & Entrance Piazza Restaurant: There are two main restaurants located in the Park. The first is a cafeteria-style restaurant adjacent to the main entrance plaza in the Northern part of the park and provides air-conditioned seating as well as extensive external paved and lawn areas. This restaurant will have an unusual interior décor reflecting the current Internet café trend. The second major restaurant, the Lakeside restaurant, will provide indoor as well as extensive outdoor seating on a timber deck area overlooking the boating lake.

Other features of the park include three refreshment kiosks, Piazza Café, health and fitness centre (a private sector venture, which will be completed by December 2007), Star Gate edutainment centre (another private venture to be completed by next year), Space Maze (modelled on the planetary system), barbeque areas, prayer areas for gents and ladies, boating lake, food court and Assault Course.

All three zones of the park are connected by a road train, which transports visitors from one zone to the other.

Wow what a park! This is so stunnig.

I have not the time to read all the posts in this thread so i ask what will happen with the areas around the park?

Will there be buildings around it like around Central Park in NY?

And whats this Park square project?

I would be glad if someone answer my question!

dubaiflo

Zabeel park is still to be extended across the road, Park Square is a huge project similar to let's say DIFC with by master developer KM Properties with about 40 towers maybe, and a massive supertall (140F) but it is likely to be cancelled due to the airport restrictions.

We will see what happens to the land.

Stargate looks ahead to final frontier
by Christopher Sell

The project has a site footprint of 19,000m2. The total amount of concrete used for the raft slab is 14,000m3 with 2,500 tonnes of reinforcing. The contractor expects to have most of the concrete work finished by the middle of January 2007.
When it was announced in September 2005 that a new, high-tech family entertainment complex was to be built in the centre of Dubai, you might have been forgiven for thinking it would contain innovative features and stunning aesthetics. This is Dubai after all, where simplicity is scorned and the complicated welcomed.

And to that extent, you would be right – for the Stargate development, located slap bang in the middle of Zabeel Park will contain some novel and enterprising activities to entertain and tax the minds of Dubai’s younger population.

But for this to happen it is also going to tax the minds of those responsible for building it. For the concept of this development is created around two animated characters who crash-land their spaceship in the middle of the park. Therefore, a significant proportion of the site will need to be below the ground.

Designed by Germany-based Kling Consult, with ECC as main contractor and due to be finished in May 2007, the centre is designed to be a mixture of education and family entertainment catering for children between four and 14 years old. Dubai-based Osus will build, operate and transfer (BOT) the project on behalf of, and in partnership with, Stargate owners Dubai Municipality.

In fact, according to Justin Larsen, construction manager at ECC, between 60 and 70% of the structure will be below ground level. This necessitated the removal of 140,000m3 of earth, the first of numerous challenges faced by the team during construction.

And like many other construction projects in Dubai, the high water table in the emirate created difficulties for the groundworks. A sophisticated dewatering system was installed to ensure the site remained dry 24 hours a day, according to Larsen.

“Because the raft slab is 2.7m below sea-level, we had to install a de-watering system with approximately 140 well points around the circumference of the site, to draw down the water table to a level which enabled us to construct the raft slab and retaining walls without the presence of water,” he says. “This system will remain operational until the structure has been completed, because the hydrostatic pressure has the potential to float an incomplete building.”

Due to this permanent presence of water, a significant concern for the construction team was therefore a waterproofing system that ensured the building would not suffer any damage. For this, a loose laid system was employed that will be flexible enough to accommodate any movement once the building has been finished. The team are being so careful, that they are waterproofing the structure up to 6m above ground level.

“The waterproof membrane was chosen because the loose laid system can allow for movement and it is reinforced to withstand the hydrostatic pressure,” says Larsen.

It isn’t just below ground either that the water has to be factored in. Stargate’s design also features a 2% fall from the middle of the complex to the edge, to ensure that precipitation does not settle and place undue loading pressure on the structure. This represents a 1.1m rise from the outside to the centre.

Although Larsen considers the rest of the construction as fairly basic structurally, once these problems have been surmounted, he points out that the design of the project sees predominantly non-linear shapes with curvatures and bends featuring heavily in the structure.

“Another aspect of the design is there are a lot of curves and odd shapes, which you don’t traditionally get on building sites, there are a lot of different shapes and angles. That is quite unique,” he says.
Therefore, when it came to building the formwork for the building, where normally you would require one formwork for a high-rise tower, for example, Stargate required Larsen to construct four different formworks for various areas of the project.

With a site footprint of 19,000m2 measuring 700mm thick, the total amount of concrete used for the raft slab is 14,000m3 with 2,500 tonnes of reinforcing. The waterproof membrane occupies 26,000m2 while the total amount of concrete used totals 30,000m3. The total reinforcing steel is 4,000 tonnes. Larsen hopes to have most of the concrete work finished by the middle of January, although he is aware the supply of raw material could be a factor before the end of construction.

“The materials are pretty common in this area, but because so much construction is going on, lead times have changed, as have prices. We haven’t experienced any delays yet but we were discussing it with regards to aluminium cladding – pretty much every building in Dubai has it,” Larsen says.

Stargate’s main attractions are spread across five domes: Saturn, Moon, UFO, Earth and Mars will each offer a unique experience. Inside one dome is ‘D3D’ high-tech ‘edutainment’ theatre offering laser shows, 2D immersive video, 3D shows, 3D interactive games and corporate events, whilst the ‘Lunar Show’ will enable children to cavort in snow all year round.

Five corridors – or ‘wings’ of the spaceship – provide exhibition and retail spaces on various themes and there will also feature a 500m ‘Foot Coaster’, which will be Dubai’s first completely indoor walking and cycling track in a climate-controlled environment, that runs the entire outer perimeter of the Stargate on the mezzanine level below ground.

The ground floor slab for the earth and lunar sectors are already in place and construction on the first dome is imminent. Each of the five segments should take about a month to finish and Larsen has scheduled 70 construction days to complete all the domes, the completion of which is paramount as it then allows lighting to be fitted and the interior design work can begin.

The domes are all constructed in situ and vary in size depending on the sector, with the largest occupying the UFO zone, which spans 40m in diameter and rises to a height of 10m. Larsen adds that around the dome, a go-kart track would be added which presents further health and safety issues to do with live loads and dead loads placed on the slab.

Started in February 2006, and earmarked for completion in May 2007, the US $68 million (AED250 million) project currently employs 460 labourers, although this will increase over the next few months to 600.

Provided Dubai’s fluctuating water table causes no problems in the future, children should be able to enjoy the delights of high-speed electric go-karting, rock-wall climbing and family rollercoasters for years to come, oblivious to the lengths contractors must go to get the site built in the first place – just as it should be.

Stargate construction work 99% completed, says developer
By Khitam Al Amir, Staff Reporter

Dubai: Osus, a property developer, has announced that 99 per cent of construction has been completed at the Dh250 million spaceship-styled family theme park Stargate being developed at the Zabeel Park.

The project, also called Bawabat Al Nojoum, will be completed and handed over this summer as scheduled, a company statement said.

Construction is almost finished, while nearly 30 per cent of electromechanical works and nine per cent of interior design and decoration works of Stargate have been completed, Jameel Al Tahlwai, Stargate project manager, said.

Osus will assign Westech, a Swiss leisure services provider, to supply the project with all leisure equipment and the installation of rides and games, Raief Hafez, Stargate's business development manager, said.

Osus has been mandated by Dubai Municipality to develop and manage the project under a 30-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) concession. Dubai Municipality will be the owner of the project after 30 years.

The family theme park, spreading across 260,000 square feet, is located inside the 52-hectare Zabeel Park, near the Dubai International Convention Centre in Bur Dubai and Karama.

Stargate Theme Park, a Dh280-million family edutainment facility currently being built at Zabeel Park, would be operational in March 2009.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, toured the facility on Monday and inspected the progress of work at this significant project which is undertaken by Osus, a property developer, as per a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) contract with Dubai Municipality.

Lootah said that the project is an example of an effective government-private sector partnership in offering the best recreational services for the city residents in addition to creating hundreds of new job opportunities for them.

"This is a unique hi-tech, mid-size and mixed-use themed family edutainment centre. It is the largest of its kind in the entire Middle East and will be a perfect addition to a large array of ambitious projects lined up in Dubai," said Lootah.

Stargate family edutainment centre is designed with the ideal mix of world class education and wholesome family entertainment. The project is constructed and themed in the form of a spaceship and covers a total area of 260,000 square feet in Zabeel Park, which occupies a total area of 52 hectors.

The overall concept was created around two animated characters called Ajeeb and Ghareeb, who captain a spaceship code named Stargate. Their spaceship lands rather heavily in Zabeel Park, with half of the spaceship lodged underground. The adventures and antics of Ajeeb and Ghareeb will form the cornerstone of Stargate's marketing strategy, which will naturally be driven towards both children and adults.

The main attractions are spread across five domes of fun, each one offering a unique experience, from "D3D" to 2D and 3D shows with interactive 3D games. There is also "No Speed Limit" a high-speed electric Go-Karting and a head-spinning family rollercoaster appropriately called the "Spinning Earth" along with the "9D Journey" a 2D + 3D + 4D virtual rides in a row with one admission.

Stargate also houses the "Space Mall" offering a complete shopping experience exclusively for children in a futuristic setting.
