The Messiah June 16th, 2004, 04:39 PM I love those cathedrals. And i have seen that skyscraper before, when i went to Frankfurt by train.
But the skyline? 5.5/10
sebastian c June 16th, 2004, 05:09 PM Köln/Cologne ain´t got a real skyline...
The cathedral is probably the most exciting "skyscraper" here...

skylover June 17th, 2004, 08:57 AM Beautiful city but the only high point of the skyline are the cathedrals.
6.5/10
Kölner June 17th, 2004, 09:36 PM I used to live there for 10 years, the city is really beautiful but has no real skyline ;)
chaos83 June 18th, 2004, 09:08 AM I really love the atmosphere of those pics. :)
R@ptor July 26th, 2004, 10:17 PM Cologne actually has the second most skyscrapers of any German city behind Frankfurt. Here are a few more pictures:

ferge June 25th, 2005, 11:19 PM Frankly who needs office towers when you have THAT dominating the city?!
http://www.city-skylines.de/digicambilder/wallpaper/turm27.JPG
Lovely setting with all those tiny colourful buildings by the waterfront with this leering over them... very historical and majestic.. Great great cathedral too! Love the city, some nice office towers, some quite drab and uninspiring ones too.. But a nice looking place if any :)
MIKI July 21st, 2005, 10:01 AM Beautiful city
Devilution July 21st, 2005, 11:34 AM Yep it´s a pretty city but the skyline isn´t really that impressive... so since the name of the game is "rate our skyline" it gets only a 6 from me.
Imperfect Ending July 21st, 2005, 02:05 PM 7/10
Funny skyline :D
no offence
Boschdijk July 22nd, 2005, 04:29 PM Köln is a great city (i've been there last winter) and some very nice buildings, espacially the Cathedral, which boasts an excellent view over the city. The skyscrapers are nice to, but they aren't clustered but are spread out across the city. Because of that, the skyline isn't very impressive in my opinion. I give it a 7/10 (on European scale).
B@dGuYoM July 22nd, 2005, 04:39 PM great big cathedral and the big tower is very nice 7/10
El_Greco September 21st, 2005, 02:10 AM 8/10
peterdn September 22nd, 2005, 07:44 PM I really like this city, and the cathedral is just amazing how big.
But the city hasn't really a skyline.
7/10
AdamT September 22nd, 2005, 08:49 PM Tragic skyline, but AWESOME cathedral that is the best. But rating this city by only skyline I can't give much more than 5/10
Based on what I typed in German, I was making a statement on how Köln is still a wonderful looking city, otherwise it would turn out like Kabul hahahhaa. Anyways, it is a must see. 7/10
Parzival October 23rd, 2005, 12:42 PM The tall building reminds me alot of sears tower

Mercian April 12th, 2006, 06:26 PM Another old stamping ground of mine - & gave a score of 7. Kinda difficult to assess in that the cathedral is SO aesthetically amazing (tho a bit dirty!) & historically important that all new high-rise development has to be at least 1km away from it. A couple of modern areas have developed & are rising on or beyond the inner-city 'ring', but there's no single focus - rather 3 or 4 groupings. Still, from certain vantage points (esp. from across the river) the skyline can appear pretty impressive.
Muyangguniang April 13th, 2006, 11:36 PM I like Cologne 7!

erbse October 5th, 2007, 11:33 PM Seems like the most of u guys are cheering and inspirable quite easily... I actually think that the rebuilding of Cologne after WW2 was one of the worst in entire Europe. It lost all of its charme despite the Dom and some isolated historical bright spots. The brutalists act so mad at this wonderful city, I could just cry.
But at least the skyline's can be considered to approach the term "okay" in European scale. I go with a 7/10 ;)
www.Rotterdam.nl October 6th, 2007, 02:07 AM A year ago I was in Köln. Köln isn't that bad. I found it a nice city to visit. Especially the night lightning of some buildings is very beautifull.
OMH October 6th, 2007, 02:18 AM its ok...the buildings are quite ok,but i would say its a typical german or continental european city...
goschio October 26th, 2007, 06:35 PM Cologne is quite ugly IMO. But the people are nice.

Skyline_FFM July 10th, 2009, 12:18 PM Thanks but why do all of these fotocommunity pics disappear after a short time? I credited them to the most possible extend. Is there any general problem with pics from this site? I already asked this the moderator De Snor about half a year ago but didn't receive an answer...
Well, I have been a member there also. And most of the photographers do sell their workd and fear the photos to become everyone's property. Most of them are really very arrogant and see anything as a theft! This is paranoid but this is the reality there. One of the reasons I left the site and created my own.
Nout July 10th, 2009, 12:57 PM I love this city :). The skyline isn't that impressive, but they've got all ingredients with a beautifull cathedral, a few modern towers, bridges... Its only not all in a cluster. 6/10

Skyline_FFM July 10th, 2009, 05:07 PM Cologne would have a skyline if it had all buildings closer together!
Eduardo L. Ramirez July 10th, 2009, 05:24 PM That's exactly what I said in my first post on this city :)
7.5/10- the only problem is that there's no real cluster, all the highrises in one place would make it definitely No 2 in Germany. Like this I think it's only slighty better than Berlin

So you think that Cologne should surround the midieval Cathedral with higrises and skyscrapers?!
We are in EUROPE! Cologne is awesome just the way it is! It doesn't nedd skyscrapers, neither a highrise impact or any other of those things to impress. It's geographical situation and silhouette are great.
Tiaren November 10th, 2009, 07:03 PM Actually, Cologne is a butt-ugly city. Rebuilding after WW2 couldn't be much worse... And without the amazing Cathedral, there would be nothing of interest regarding a skyline.

Cologne is amazing. It is quite bustling for it's size, a highrise packed skyline would worsen the situation of WWII-rebuilding. But Cologne has other things to offer. You can not deny it, or you don't know it too well.
Or would you prefer to see the Cathedral surrounded by the highrises? Modern architecture okay. But no concurrence in height just near the cathedral.
And it is funny that people from overseas always think that all cities have to be filled with highrises and form a skyline. We have a completely different model of urbanization. At least we have 4 of the 12 best cities to live in in the world. I think a skyline doesn't improve the quality of life!

I am German and I'm pretty often in Cologne too, so I know what I'm talking about. I never said that the city centre should be packed with highrises. On the contrary, I love historic cityscapes...but Cologne just has one ugly post war blog after the other. The city is really ugly...but right, it's popular too. And the Kölner are the most outgoing and overall happy people I could think of in Germany. Still, the city is pure post war ugliness with just one sparkling highlight, the Kölner Dom.
Skyline_FFM November 10th, 2009, 11:44 PM I know that you are German! You live in Trier, where I often spent some days when I was a child. An aunt of mine lived in Schweich.
Tiaren November 11th, 2009, 01:08 AM Trier and Schweich FTW!!!111eleven ;)
missioneiro November 11th, 2009, 06:54 PM Köln ist wunderbar! :) The historic core must be preserved (or what survived from WWII) and i think that the height is OK and any skyscraper would destroy that area. But i think that Köln could have a new area for a new CBD or something like this with more skyscrapers constituing a new area in the city.
eL yOrSh November 11th, 2009, 07:46 PM wonderful photographs, the ratings 9 / 10 that, according to the definition of skyline (an outline (as of buildings or a mountain range) against the background of the sky), I think this very clearly defined the silhouette of the city and very recognizable .
I think these threads, many people confuse a skyline and think they have to have skyscrepers.
as only a personal opinion

Who said anything about clustering skyscrapers in the center of the city? Other european capitals have found ways of blending old and new creatively without overbearing talls ruining the Altstadt the way Frankfurt did, or with districts where talls are built appealingly like Moscow or Amsterdam. Koln just has little cohesiveness to its skyline and most of those scattered talls are dreadful.

This model is used to make the cityscape look open and free. If you collect them just in clusters, the city looks american and it is not desireable for an old city where Romans have settled for a long time!
You do not have such historic backgrounds in the US so you can do whatever you want with your cities...
And Cologne is not growing that fast that there would be a need to verticalize it! IMO some of the highrise buildings could be knocked down to improve the cityscape!

Skyline_FFM December 16th, 2009, 04:47 PM 99% of Cologne's highrise and at least 50% of the midrise could be knocked down. They are so damn ugly and real landscape-killers! :ohno:
Eduardo L. Ramirez December 16th, 2009, 06:42 PM You already said that a couple of times...
99% of the highrises? That's a bit harsh, don't you think? Some of Cologne's tallest highrises (KölnTurm -148m, Ringturm -110m, Herkules Tower -105m, TriangleTower -103m) are actually really nice for me, not to mention recladding projects of "medium" looking buildings like the Lufthansa Tower -95m (MaxCologne -100m).
However, Cologne has quite a few crimes against architecture ;) , I must agree with it generally.

Eduardo L. Ramirez February 25th, 2011, 03:49 PM With 157m height it is the 2nd tallest in both Germany and the world :okay:
Dzwonsson February 25th, 2011, 04:41 PM Cologne is a very nice city, I've been there many times and certainly will be there again soon, but despite its massive cathedral with its great soaring towers and the fact I love Gaffel Kölsch the skyline doesn't deserve more than 5/10...
Geocarlos March 3rd, 2011, 01:36 AM 6/10
harrypowell March 3rd, 2011, 01:48 AM Magnificent cathedral. And that' about it really. And those odd 60's looking buildings along the river look hideous. 4/10
vfG March 6th, 2011, 07:29 PM Nice skyline... but according to the metropolitan area ... underdevelopped...
My top 5 in this metro area :
Düsseldorf (Diversity + night skyline)
Essen (Density)
Dortmund (Quite Modern)
Köln (Bridge Cathedral & Towers)
I think we need a topic for this incredible metro area anyway...
Werkself March 6th, 2011, 07:50 PM With 157m height it is the 2nd tallest in both Germany and the world :okay:
Here you see the comparison:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/69/Groessenvergleich_UL-K-M-B-AC.jpg
I dont like it that much, maybe its because I see it everyday. Its just huge, poor glance and very windy around it. The underground of it is more interesting. If you visit cologne, dont climb it, go to the other riverside and up to the "LVR tower", so you can make a good photo of the cathedral and the city. ;-)
The new crane houses really suck! Now they are modern, but in 10 years they will look clumsy. And the destroy our beautiful architecture in the Rheinauhafen. They should have build more emotional designs like in Düsseldorfs Mediahafen. :ohno:

not much for the handful crapers but for the cathedral - one humongeous gothic.
I can hardly believe myself being there a long time ago, crossing that huge steel bridge
by foot to take shots of the cathedral on the other side one cloudy september afternoon.

èđđeůx March 8th, 2012, 01:57 AM Lovely surprise, such a beautiful city! 7/10
TheReconstructer March 10th, 2012, 12:29 PM Cologne is a really beautiful city, was there 4 years ago and it was a great city :) The only thing I think is a shame that Cologne doesn't rebuilt historical houses in the Altstadt. Does Cologne has any plans for reconstruction? I know they rebuilded the quarter near the Groß St. Martin and the promenade of the Rhein.
Eduardo L. Ramirez March 11th, 2012, 01:14 AM ^ This particular area was 'completed' by 1990. They are still reconstructing some buildings from time to time but there is no consideble quantity anymore, unfortunately.
