After seeing tender documents for Burj Dubai, Construction Week can exclusively reveal that the drawings show that Burj Dubai is currently set to reach a total height of 704.9 m (including the spire) when complete.
Construction Week had earlier (Issue 19) quoted tower’s foundations contractor Bauer as saying the skyscraper would be 560 m.
The developer, Emaar Properties has so far been tight-lipped on the issue of the building’s final height, so it would be no surprise if the height changes during the course of the project as has happened on a number of other record-breaking projects such as New York’s Empire State Building (381 m) and Chrysler Building (319 m).
Competition for the coveted “world’s tallest” title is notoriously tough.

The Burj Dubai
A number of new overseas contractors, mostly from the Far East, are currently tendering for Burj Dubai as part of joint ventures with local contractors. Billed by the developer, Emaar Properties, as the world’s tallest tower, it is no surprise that a project of such prestige has attracted contractors from all over the world.
The majority of the overseas companies involved are based in the Far East, where high-rise fever has led to the construction of several of the world’s tallest buildings in recent years.
The joint ventures known to be tendering are: Grocon/Al Hamid/DCE; Al Habtoor – Murray & Roberts/WCT/Takenaka; Dutco Balfour Beatty/Paul Y ITC Construction Holdings/Al Ghandi – Consolidated Construction Co.; Al Naboodah Laing O’Rourke/Hip Hing; and Besix/Samsung Construction/Arabtec.
Construction Week believes other joint ventures may also submit tenders, as several major local contractors plans, at the time of writing, were unclear.
Hong Kong-based contractors Paul Y ITC and Hip Hing both have extensive experience in high-rise construction from their domestic market. Paul Y ITC was the main contractor for The Center (346 m) and The Cheung Kong Centre (283 m). Hip Hing was the main contractor for Highcliff (252 m) and The Harbourside (235 m).
As one of Japan’s leading contractors, The Takenaka Corporation is also able to bring a wealth of high-rise experience. The company was responsible for the construction of the Tokyo Tower (333 m). Completed in 1950, it is still Tokyo’s tallest building.
The Samsung Construction Company from South Korea recently completed Tower Palace Three, Tower G (264 m), which is now South Korea’s tallest building. Australian contractor Grocon is currently working on what will be Melbourne’s tallest building Eureka Tower (297m). The project is expected to be finished in 2005.
The tenders are due for submission on 4th July. Most expect that the awards will be announced sometime after late August.
Other companies involved are Skidmore, Owings & Merril’s (SOM) Chicago Office as the architect; Turner Construction as the construction manager and Hirsch/Bedner & Associates for the interiors. Bauer and Middle East Foundations are the piling contractors.

Marco Polo June 25th, 2004, 03:57 PM I think this tower is grotesque. Especially in Dubai. It does not fit the landscape, it is foreign and much much too tall. It simply looks stupid. Sorry. I can see in Dubai buildings up to say 150 metres, that's all.
