Terminal 2 Gets S$240 Million Facelift To Boost Changi's Aviation Hub Status
© Singapore Changi Airport (http://www.changiairport.com.sg)
Changi Airport's Terminal 2 (T2) will look brand new when its upgrading is completed in 2005. T2, which is 13 years old, will see more capacity added to the departure / transit lounge, enhancing Changi's position as an aviation hub. The upgrading, which will see massive improvements made to its design, costs S$240 million.
Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, Minister for Transport visited the airport on 30 October 2003 to view the upgrading at the airport. He applauded the efforts taken by CAAS to ensure that airport operations were not affected and inconvenience to airport users kept to a minimum despite the extensive renovation work.
The upgraded T2 will have a new glass façade allowing natural light into the departure hall. A new canopy above the kerbside at the departure hall will be extended outwards to ensure that airport users are shielded from the rain when alighting from their vehicles. An extra 2,800 square metres will also be added to the transit area for shops, restaurants, seating amenities and landscaping, with improved facilities for the elderly or disabled travellers.
en November 28th, 2004, 08:20 AM In my opinion Changi is an overrated airport, nothing really special about its layout or design.
Only good thing is the amount of services that they provide to travellers. (Last been there in 95 when they were just building the finger piers on T2)

Well, the clear, simple fact is that Changi has NEVER earned its reputation from layout or design. It has always excelled in what matters directly to its users: services! :)
Btw ignore, you go and create a new thread?

Plaza Premium Lounge is the first public access transit lounge open to all classes of travelers regardless of airlines, class of travel and airline membership in Singapore Changi Airport. The Lounge has recently relocated to larger, more conducive premises at the third level of the Departure / Transit Lounge in Terminal 2 with a floor area of approximately 7,000 square feet and a seating capacity for 100 people at any one time. Open 24 hours daily, the shower, massage, fitness lifestyle centre continues to be a very welcomed and much needed facility for all inbound transit or long haul passengers of airlines that operate from Terminal 2, Singapore Changi Airport.
After many long hours’ travel with movement constraint on board of a plane, nothing is more inviting than to come in to a clean, tranquil, cozy and spacious environment portraying a health conscious lifestyle concept. The Lounge underwent a refreshing facelift, which is reflected in the Straits Chinese and Zen combination concept which emphasizes efficient space usage to create an extremely soothing environment to alleviate tiredness and stress after a long flight.
Enveloped by an immediate feeling of contemporary elegance amidst the rusticity of natural elements such as wood, water, pebbles and an abundance of greenery, warm natural tones predominate the colour scheme of the interior décor and furnishings, bordering to richer, earthier tones. Strong emphasis is placed on the use of natural materials like woven cane, wood carvings, clear glass, stone ware, earthen ware and raw silk wall décor fabric in the presence of subtle warm lighting and natural light pouring through the floor to ceiling glass paneling which overlooks the adjacent outdoor sunflower garden. A gentle and relaxing music of the sounds of nature, forest and water permeates the tranquil atmosphere.
At the entrance of the lounge, one is immediately attracted to the row of high tech, latest full line of ergonomic exercise machines with workout options designed to fulfill your physical workout needs. One of the largest airport gyms in the world, this fitness facility comprises a hydraulic rower, treadmills, cross trainers, upright bike, strength and weight stations. The stretch yoga area comes equipped with mats and cushions, and fit balls are available for balance and stretching. The wall mounted plasma television displays a succession of yoga and fitness aerobics videos for the health conscious. A bank of mirrors on the inner wall leads to a changing room with a dedicated coat and luggage area. A session at the gym coupled with yoga before or after completes the entire body workout, to be followed subsequently by a hot pampering shower.
The shower facilities features twelve individual shower rooms with an attached dressing and dry area each. The shower rooms can be used by both male and female without gender segregation, which will eliminate waiting time and improve utilization. A luxuriously appointed common male and female dressing area comes equipped with wash basins and hair dryers.
Another highlight of the new Lounge is the foot reflexology pebble path leading to the massage and napping area, where simplicity makes a great design statement. Known to and practiced by the ancient Chinese, foot reflexology is a natural health approach where reflex zones or nerve endings in the feet are massaged or stimulated to normalize the function of the body’s internal organs.
From the foot reflexology path, we enter the massage area where six treatment rooms are available for head and shoulder massage and foot reflexology. The nail care facility which features normal and French manicure makes its debut as one of the new services of this Lounge.
Adjacent to the massage area is a private napping area with a dim, soothing interior where each napping suite comes with checkered wooden partitions installed for privacy and aesthetic appeal. Raised wooden platforms with tatami mats spell the comfort of a peaceful sanctuary, amidst the gentle permeating aroma of essential oils; creating a restful and calm atmosphere for complete relaxation. Vibrant and colourful Straits Chinese décor chests and trinket boxes lend a feeling of timeless charm and serenity.
As one enters the Lounge area, a water feature wall takes centre stage as the soothing sound of water skimming across slate and pebbles enhance the serenity and refined elegance of the entire design concept.
The self service buffet bar is amply stocked with wholesome salad and condiments, freshly prepared finger sandwiches, pastries, cookies and seasonal local and imported fruits. Hot and cold beverages are readily available beside the bar and buffet counters.
The library houses international newspapers and magazines, with Straits Chinese china and porcelain ware adorning the shelves. Internet and email access, as well as laptop computers points are available for travelers to keep in touch with family and friends during transit. Another new offering in this Lounge is the Office Services facility which provides facsimile, photocopy, courier, local and international calls services for busy business executives to catch up on work during transit.
The much touted Oxygen Therapy is made available at the bar counter where one can enjoy a whiff of pure oxygen while having a bite to eat or a refreshing drink in hand. Mobile oxygen is also available throughout the lounge area, so opt for some rejuvenating fresh air anywhere you may be in the lounge. The private Oxygen Aromatherapy room is another new service offering where you can enjoy total repose in a comfortable armchair with an elevated leg rest to enhance blood circulation, reduce fatigue and improved concentration while breathing in pure oxygen infused with lavender essential oils.
Overall, the aesthetically pleasing surroundings with soft, indirect lighting and soothing background music enhances the ambiance, smooth lines and contrasting ergonomic steel ceiling – giving one an open, spacious feel. Since the one-stop shower, massage, fitness lifestyle lounge began operations in early 2002, there has been a marked increase in patronage, especially amongst economy class travelers. Uniquely designed to provide the tranquility that will help you refresh yourself, or simply relax and unwind, the lounge not only caters to individual travelers; it is also ideal for groups up to 120 persons on transit.
Having obtained the ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2003, the Straits Chinese and Zen-themed integrated lounge facilities and services will be another worldwide and industry first, where transit time spent in Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2 transcends privilege and pleasure

Take a Brek before you fly
If you want to take off with good Italian food in your tummy, make a stopover at this eatery in Changi Airport's Terminal 2 departure lounge
By Wong Ah Yoke
AIRLINE food may have improved over the years but unless you are travelling Business or First class, it still cannot compare to freshly prepared fare.
The problem is, airports traditionally offered little more than cafes serving overpriced sandwiches or, at the most, a fast-food outlet.
But travellers passing through Changi Airport's Terminal 2 Departure Hall over the past few months would have noticed eateries that have sprouted there.
Some are familiar names, such as Killiney Kopitiam with its famous kaya toast and kopi-o, which are offshoots of chains in the city.
But Brek Ristorante, which opened in November last year, is a totally new concept in this part of the world although it has more than 40 outlets in northern and central Italy, where it started in the town of Trieste 25 years ago.
An Italian self-service eatery, Brek is not to be confused with Breeks, a buffet restaurant in Marina Square, or Breko Cafe in Holland Village.
It is located near the passport controls in an extended area of the airport that offers a floor-to-ceiling view of the berthed planes on the tarmac. Seats for about 100 people are lined up near the window.
From afar, it looks like any old airport cafe, with a low glass display case that ends at a cashier.
But look closer and you will see that instead of shrink-wrapped tuna sandwiches and oily curry puffs, goodies behind the glass include freshly baked pizzas, pasta and other Italian items with uncommon names like schiacciata, panino and tramezzinni.
The last three are unleavened bread in different sizes and thickness, either topped or stuffed with ingredients such as ham, tomato and cheese.
It is a self-service restaurant with the menu and prices written on a blackboard behind the cashier. You pay for your order and then pick up the food from the counter staff.
However, if you order a pasta or a whole pizza instead of just a slice, it will be served to your table. These are cooked to order, but mindful that its customers are rushing for flights, the outlet promises to have the food on your table within nine minutes.
Other items are also prepared on the premises with the chefs working in full view of customers.
They may be simple, quick-to-eat fare but what impressed me is the flavour of the ingredients.
On a recent flight to Japan which left at 1am, I dropped by the eatery at close to its midnight closing time. I was hoping for some hot pasta but it was sold out, although the staff had neglected to remove the display dishes from the window.
Opting for a mozzarella and tomato tramezzinni ($5.50) instead, I found the large slice of thick unleavened bread a bit too chewy for a midnight snack. But the tomato was so flavourful that I could not help but finish it.
No ordinary tomato from your neighbourhood market could have tasted so good.
Apparently, Breks has strict quality control for all ingredients used, and when what is available locally does not match up, they are imported.
On another visit, I was equally impressed by the pizzas ($11 a slice or $39.60 whole). They are not cheap but taste authentically Italian and certainly beat the average home-delivery versions. Again, the quality of ingredients like ham and zucchini shines.
There are also sweet pastries and other desserts to complete your meal. The panna cotta ($5.50) can certainly match that of many Italian eateries in town with its smooth texture.
There are about 100 items on the menu but these are rotated every three weeks. So unless you are a very frequent traveller, you should be able to find something fresh to eat every time you pass through.
The only problem with dining at Brek is that you need a boarding pass to get to it. But news is that the chain is looking to open a second outlet in the city this year. The concept should work well for lunches in the business district.
In the meantime, it would be a good idea to check in early and enjoy a leisurely meal before boarding your plane. That way, you get to skip the long queues at the check-in counters later on.
For my Japan flight, it allowed me to skip the inflight supper and have a nice, uninterrupted sleep till breakfast the next morning.

Really these computers being hookup to the internet are using for free as long as you are in the airport. I known this is dumb to said this, but when I am being transit to Korea international airline to called Incheon then flight to SE asia for a trip. Man they wouldn't let me use the computer, the accountant seat near that place said that I need to be a member of some freaking club I have never heard of. Anyway, let get back to the main point, I don't known why she wouldn't let me use the computer, but anybody that want to use the computer needed to be a member. That was a sad thing for Korea airline, but all services was great, hope they fix this problems.

No wait now for bags to be screened at T2
Passengers go direct to check-in, as scans are done behind the scenes
By Karamjit Kaur
Transport Correspondent
PASSENGERS checking in at Changi Airport's Terminal 2 can now skip the baggage-screening stop altogether and hand their suitcases over at the airline counter to collect their boarding passes.
Luggage checks are now being done behind closed doors by a new $80 million system, introduced to enhance security at the airport.
It was installed two weeks ago at Terminal 2, where there are 140 check-in counters. Terminal 1, which has 160, got it in August.
Passengers are pleased as it means they now queue just once - at the check-in counter - instead of twice.
The airport is less congested too, said civil servant Angeline Tan, 39.
'Aside from the convenience, the public area is clearer because the X-ray machines have gone. Before, there used to be long queues sometimes at the security stations, which made the whole place look very messy.'
A Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) spokesman told The Straits Times the system was running smoothly and feedback from the 69 airlines which fly here had been positive.
The new screening system comprises different types of equipment to inspect luggage. The X-ray machines can scrutinise baggage from various angles, while explosive-detection systems use computer tomography - similar to the technology used in the medical field - to do scans.
Highly suspicious bags are placed in a special capsule called the threat containment vessel for disposal.
Travellers and airlines welcomed the heightened vigilance of the new screening process, which normally takes a few minutes.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) spokesman Stephen Forshaw said the system had already helped the carrier detect 'a number of items' which are not permitted on a plane.
'In two particular and separate cases, two customers travelling to tsunami-affected areas, with all good intentions to help those affected, packed small kerosene-powered generators.'
The flammable items were spotted, and the passengers contacted and asked to remove them.
The CAAS spokesman said that so far, there had been only 'a handful of cases' where passengers had been contacted to open their bags for a physical search. But no passenger had missed a flight as a result, she added.
Still, the additional checks have prompted SIA, which uses Terminal 2, to stop checking in passengers 40 minutes before departure. It used to be 30 minutes.
Mr Forshaw said: 'We want to get our flights away on time. Extra screening requirements for baggage are in everyone's interests, but they mean customers need to plan their journeys to take account of a little extra time.'
Less congestion in public areas
TRAVELLERS at Changi Airport Terminal 2 can now walk straight up to the check-in counters with their luggage, hand it over and collect their boarding passes. Previously, they had to have their baggage screened and security tagged by officers (below) before they could proceed to check in.
The $80 million automated system - introduced two weeks ago at T2; Terminal 1 got its system in August - screens bags behind closed doors.
Eliminating one layer of queues and checks means a less-congested check-in area. Says civil servant Angeline Tan, 39: 'The public area is clearer because the X-ray machines have gone. Before, there used to be long queues sometimes at the security stations.'

Woodhead Wilson wins upgrade of Changi Airport
The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has commissioned Woodhead Wilsonfor the Sing$140million upgrade of Changi Terminal 1.
The Woodhead Wilson team comprises three internationally renowned designers, Woodhead International, (one of Australasia’s top aviation architectural firms), Architects 61, (a leading Singaporean architectural practice) and Wilson & Associates (US based world leaders in hotel and hospitality design.)
The Woodhead Wilson team won the architectural and design contract for the airportfrom an initial open world bid which was short listed to five then two highly respected international firms.
Melbourne-based Woodhead International principal and aviation portfolio leader, Matt Findlay, says the company has the advantage of having built an excellent working relationship with the CAAS since securing the coveted A$100 million interior design contract for Changi Terminal 3 in 2000.
“This new contract allows us to continue the vision of creating an Asian design and civic icon, providing the highest quality passenger experience and further cementing Singapore’s aviation leadership in the region and the world,” Findlay says.
The Changi 1 project includes the delivery of architectural, interior design, landscaping, lighting, retail, food & beverage and planning services, as well as civil and structural, mechanical and electrical engineering and quantity surveying services.
In 2004, World Architecture rated Woodhead International No.1 in Aviation in Australia and 6th in the world.
Work on the project is expected to commence in immediately with completion estimated by 2008

Actually it did not move much. The new skytrain just move out of the station and stop there, revealing the 2 train catridges. I was in the old skytrain(I wanted to go to T1 then) when i saw this but didn't not take pictures then since it was too fast for me to react. Then when I finally got back to T2, the skytrain move back into the station...... :bash:
Thats why you see the train in the station...... Btw the new station is just right behind the current skytrain station, so I'm not able to take pictures of it......
ignoramus November 29th, 2005, 03:39 PM You make me feel like going over there for a peep tomorrow...just can't decide what to do after that. I can't possibly go to the airport just to look at the trains and then head home right...
In January 2003, I was impressed by the design of the trains for the Sengkang LRT. In June 2003, I was again impressed by the North East Line trains. Now, I am impressed by the Changi Airport Skytrain. Design of trains in Singapore have come a long way since the first MRT and LRT trains...
