View Full Version : Ads that have survived the test of time
Fabian June 16th, 2004, 11:33 PM Do you know of any ad's that have survived the test of time ie more than one year
I've noticed that a number of ads have been played for years without any changes or small modifications or keeping certain elements eg same footage but the music has changed.
On channel ten in Sydney during the day between 10am and 5pm, I've been seeing for roughly the past EIGHT years, an ad for Blockout Shutters (a Sydney company) where an elderly woman speaks to a rugby league player (from that period) about why her blockout shutters are better than her neighbours. The ad ends of with the guy going "Tough, get Blockout Tough" before being tackled by the elderly woman.
Another one is a version of one of the Lube Mobile Ads on channel seven, which has come and go several times over the same period as well, if not a bit longer. It's the version where the song goes "Lube Mobile will come to you...." and the kids go "they fixed the car" and the little boy goes "13 30 32" at the end.
Charlwood, is also another one with virtually the same footage, music. Sometimes voiceovers are changed for promo's. I first saw this one in May of last year.
Do you know of any other ads?. They can be ones that are seen in your city only.
ABS June 17th, 2004, 04:43 AM That Victorian anti-speeding ad where the two AU Falcons crash into a truck from a few years ago is now shown in QLD but with the Victoria logo replaced with a QLD Government logo. QLD hasn't seen the Falcon ute crash advertisement ever yet.
Oriolus June 17th, 2004, 04:51 AM Thats the "5k difference up there equals 27k difference down here" ad right?
It does seem as if it could be effective - certainly I'd never thought about it like that.
ABS June 17th, 2004, 06:11 AM Yep, that's the one.
Load of bullshit if you ask me and the accident researcher in the ad has NO CREDIBILITY. If both cars hit the truck in the same position then the damage would be similar, but because the faster car hit the back end the damage was accentuated.
hornetfig June 17th, 2004, 03:00 PM "Not Happy Jan!"
tayser June 17th, 2004, 03:03 PM I love it how every now and again FRANCO COZZO, BRUNS-A-WICK AND FOOTA-SCRAY ...Migallo migallo migallo, grand sale, grand sale! comes back on ;)
class act.
(please excuse the spelling if incorrect).
jacobsian June 17th, 2004, 03:08 PM Discount Lounge Centre! 15 years on and the fuckers are STILL "closing down" .......
AtD June 17th, 2004, 03:11 PM Gouger Rugs… "Up to 83% off! 83% off!" Man, that guy must have fucking massive margins.
Dilaz89 June 17th, 2004, 04:31 PM Those rug places! there always having bloody fire sales or melbourne flood sales every weeeknd!
Fabian June 18th, 2004, 02:03 AM That Victorian anti-speeding ad where the two AU Falcons crash into a truck from a few years ago is now shown in QLD but with the Victoria logo replaced with a QLD Government logo. QLD hasn't seen the Falcon ute crash advertisement ever yet.
This one did the rounds a year ago here in NSW.
Oriolus June 18th, 2004, 08:41 AM Those rug places! there always having bloody fire sales or melbourne flood sales every weeeknd!
I reckon, but who buys rugs for $3000 or whatever they flog those Persian things for, even if it is marked down from $10 000.
Fabian June 18th, 2004, 11:07 AM Those rug places! there always having bloody fire sales or melbourne flood sales every weeeknd!
There was one last weekend at Homebush Bay that was on TV.
In Sydney, The Persian Carpet Gallery always does ads, same music. I have to put up with a store in my backyard which opened a few months ago.
Muse June 18th, 2004, 11:31 AM Don't those hair-replacement adds with Greg Yeah-Yeah Matthews hang around for a while? They all look the same to me.
Like ab machine adds or the late-night 1900 numbers with women rolling around on beds saying stuff like "C'mon, you know you want to call meeeeee....don't you?....don't you? - 1900-666-Oh.Oh.Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh".
Truly, i can't distinguish them anymore.
I know! Those very late night info-mercials for Tony Robbins, the good-looking Frankenstein-type & motivational speaker, punchng the air and having his Madonna-esque micophone....and then testimonials from people like Erin Brokovich, Quincy Jones and greedy real estate agents that have "made it" due to Robbin's books and CDs.
"Now remember, smile with those $USD4,000 capped teeth @ your business colleague!" - LOL @ Shorty the Loser:

Avatar June 18th, 2004, 11:40 AM The oldest ad i recall is a religious one... they play it in the summer normally... aint seen if for a couple of years.
LOL I found the funny advert... we used to make fun of it... but everyone used to sing it anyway... how tragic :P
If I were a butterfly, I’d thank you Lord for giving me wings
If I were a robin in a tree, I’d thank you Lord that I could sing
If I were a fish in the sea, I’d wiggle my tail and I’d giggle with glee
But I just thank you father for making me, me
For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus and you made me your child
And I just thank you Father for making me, me
If I were an elephant, I’d thank you Lord by raising my trunk
If I were a kangaroo, You know I’d hop right up to you
If I were an octopus, I’d thank you Lord for my fine looks
But I just thank you Father for making me, me
For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus and you made me your child
And I just thank you Father for making me, me
If I were a wiggly worm, I’d thank you Lord that I could squirm
If I were a fuzzy wuzzy bear, I’d thank you Lord for my fuzzy, wuzzy hair
If I were a crocodile, I’d thank you Lord for my great smile
But I just thank you Father for making me, me
For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus and you made me your child
And I just thank you Father for making me, me
who would have thought a religiously overtoned ad would be one of the
oldest.
Blend June 18th, 2004, 11:48 AM lol rug ads are the best.
Especially that guy from Brisbane (dunno if its elsewhere too) who owns rugs-a-million. His excuse for over a year for a constant sale was one of his 'mega stores' were shutting down.. and it eventually did. Now he is having a sale because of many other misc reasons.
One of the most stupid ads i seen is the drink driving one. i mean wtf? 'its hard to live with'. The climax of his difficulties is that his daughter missed the movies, and he had to get lifts to work. and it acts like his family died. Anyone else seen them?
and also worth a mention, although theyre constantly changing, it is the same format.. the titan ads. theyre great "What are you doin in my shed son?" "Ive got a ... Hot Date!" "what, have you been sittin on the bonnet of the T-Bird too long?"
lol theyre too good.
Fabian June 18th, 2004, 11:50 AM There was one last weekend at Homebush Bay that was on TV.
In Sydney, The Persian Carpet Gallery always does ads, same music. I have to put up with a store in my backyard which opened a few months ago.
No sooner than I had finished doing this post, and the ad for the Homebush Bay Rug sale pops up again. I thought it was just for the long weekend.
Avatar June 18th, 2004, 11:55 AM A few of the tic tacs ads survived for an eternity and looked like they were created before colour television they look so old... I remember seeing the same adverts for years on end. The dumb one with the tennis players.
Another ad that stayed around a long time was one of the cherry ripe ads.
Muse June 18th, 2004, 12:08 PM If I were a wiggly worm, I’d thank you Lord that I could squirm

But I just thank you Father for making me, meLOL, that's classic Avatar. @ "wiggly worm, - squirm" & "fuzzy-wuzzy bear - fuzzy, wuzzy hair"
@ Blend. LOL @ 'Rugs-a-million". You sure that isn't another hair-replacement promo? ;). BTW It must be a Queensland chain.
...and of course Fabian will testify my frustration with the Chrisco (pronounced ever-so-nicely as Chris-kyoo) Hamper woman. Every year for 1 1/2 months her face, her voice and the background Jingle Bells Chrisco Theme. :guns1:
Fabian June 18th, 2004, 12:18 PM The Chrisco ads have been fairly similar with small changes eg settings, but were still reminded each year by Santa Anna following Christmas to order their catalogue and place orders for the following Christmas, and mid year (now) were told to add to the orders with Jingle Bells played in the background. These run during the middle of the day during programs such as Jerry Springer.
Muse, I didn't see her this week during Jerry Springer. I bet she was planning her next promotion.
Where is that pic/s of her by the way?
Jimmy James June 18th, 2004, 02:02 PM I saw that Advanced Hair Ad the other night - It went for like two hours! Every man and his dog has had the plugs, some dickwit radio DJ from the UK says how it gives him more confidence on the air! Then Greg Matthews comes out and tells us how his new do helps him pull the young chicks! wtf - he's like 40something trawling the schoolyard for dates!?!!
The one ad which I would have liked to have seen on longer was the Treasury Casino ad in Brisbane with the guy with the afro. That was funny as!
Dilaz89 June 18th, 2004, 02:17 PM lol rug ads are the best.

.
yes we have that same guy with the same excusses for months! does anywhere else in aus have rugs-a-million?
Muse June 19th, 2004, 02:26 AM Great thread Fabian!! :) lolololol
@ Jimmy James. I love the artistic genious of cheap adds. I would kill to see the Treasury Casino Afro guy.
@ dliaz89. So the rug dude is in Perth too. I haven't seen him on Sydney T.V.Where is that pic/s of her by the way?Fabian, they seemed to have taken it off the website and only have the Hamper selections. But good, I don't want to see her mug on this site as well.
I know that Sydney occasionally shows The Devine Homes commercial that I saw 2 years ago in Brisbane. It has a young couple reeling back in mock-surprise when their beautiful Devine Home appears like magic in front of them (courtesy of the El Cheapo Special Effects. Dept). BTW It's the same Devine as the apartment developer.
A Big-Kev I'm excited-type from the Devine website (or is it Mr Devine and his mega-bucks?):

Fabian June 19th, 2004, 03:06 AM Remember the days when Coke used to run the same promotion and ads for years on end before they begun changing on an annual and even monthly basis?
Who remembers the "Always Coca Cola" ads that was screened between 1993 and 1997 where each word to the lyric was flashed on the screen as it was sung with a purple background and a glass bottle of coke would appear at the end. This was probably the last Coke ad that would survive the test of time.
jacobsian June 19th, 2004, 03:38 AM Just on bullshit closing down sales - this plant store in Kent Town (inner city Adelaide) was constantly having closing down sales. The guy who owned it actually kept on filming new ads with this smirk on his face saying how he was closing down because the council was booting him out. He'd hold up pieces of paper saying "here's the eviction notice" etc etc. He never did close down.
Until someone burned his shop down a couple of years ago :D
Fuck I love this city!
Muse June 19th, 2004, 04:05 AM ^ LOLOLOL Great yob. Karma got him in the end! ^
Suits on sale now, At LOWES!!!! :okay: :okay: :okay: :okay:

climbing_crane June 19th, 2004, 04:24 AM I used to like that ad about the AFL a few years ago. Some sheila saying *kick it up the guts* and *your career is goin' down the toiiiiiiiiiiiilllet.
Blend June 19th, 2004, 04:31 AM Muse - Yes, i wanted to get that treasury ad for a long time but could never find it. I still want it, but i am doubtful that it will turn up anywhere.
Tony P June 19th, 2004, 11:01 AM Avatar, that has to be one of my favourites! lol! :)
Speaking of religious ads that have stood the test of time, how about this little beauty that started in the early 80's and went at least up to last year?
First the visuals: Small child inside a house, looking out the window at the rain pelting down in the garden, and pondering over the world.
Now for the song:
How come there's a sun?
Why's a flower?
Why's a tree?
Why are the clouds so high?
How come they're in the sky?
Why's a tree?
Why's a person just like me?
.....
WHO IS ME?
-------------------------------
You would think the 'man upstairs' would have given the writer of this song some grammar lessons.
Fabian June 19th, 2004, 11:25 AM Discount Lounge Centre! 15 years on and the fuckers are STILL "closing down" .......
From time to time, Light Up at Canterbury announce closing down sales, only to stay open. It's gone on for a decade.
Jimmy James June 19th, 2004, 11:29 AM Great thread Fabian!! :) lolololol

Muse - that Leigh Matthews, ex Hawthorn player and current coach of the Brisbane Lions! Those ads are rampant in Melbourne at the moment
The treasury casino ad only ran for about a year but it was funny enough to get on one of those worlds greatest commercials specials that seven does all the time!
Blend June 19th, 2004, 11:31 AM If anyone can find it on the net anywhere (treasury one) i want!
Muse June 19th, 2004, 12:11 PM Why are the clouds so high?

WHO IS ME?Who is you? lol Why are the clouds so high?
How come they're in the sky?
Their is also the very late night CTA one trying to pull in the young groovy demographic. 3 young, hip 'n cool Califorian-types, a few "Yo"s, a dance beat, a quick rap, and then it fades out to...
"Jesus is alright by me, Jesus is alright I said, Jesus is alright by me, Jesus is..."
@ Tony P. I can't wait till Mr Pretzel starts rolling adds on high rotation.
@ Jimmy James. Cool. I'd say very ex-footballer judging by his condition....and gosh, you're being bombarded with Devine adds. I feel sorry for you.
@ Fabian. Yerrrrrr, you're right. Those damn Canterbury Light adds are chronically closing down.
@ Blend. If you (or anyone else) ever get hold of the Treasury Casino add, please, please send me a link or get a copy to me somehow. As I said, I would kill for to see it.
Tony P June 19th, 2004, 12:44 PM LOL @ Muse, recently I was sufficiently bored enough to find out the lyrics to the "Jesus is still Alright" song. The band is called DC Talk.
If you have a portable pottie, bring it to the computer now. I still piss myself reading it. :)
JESUS IS STILL ALRIGHT - DC TALK.
Do do do dupe dupe
Do do do dupe
Do do do dupe dupem dupe dopem do
[check it for me one time]
[ohhhh, yeah yeah]
(chorus)
Jesus is still alright with me
Jesus is still alright, oh yeah
Jesus is still alright with me
Jesus is still alright
Toby mac, and the mac is back no slack
On a dc track that’s jacked, beyond comprehension
I believe that I failed to mention that
There’s a lack of recognition
When it comes to His position
Cause if Christ can’t be crossed over,
Then I’ll keep my beat up nova
(repeat chorus 1)
(chorus 2)
I don’t care what they may say
I don’t care what they may do
I don’t care what they may say
Jesus is still alright
Back in place, and I’m all up in your face
With a rhyme that I embrace, like a mother to her child
I’m kickin’ it Jesus style
To the ones that think they heard
I did use the J word
Cause I ain’t too soft to say it
Even if dj’s don’t play it
Do do do dupe dupem dupe dopem do (3x)
Jesus is still alright
[oh, I’m hopin’ and I’m praying]
Jesus is still alright
Jesus still alright, oh yeah
Jesus is still alright
Jesus is still alright
[oh yeah]
(breakdown)
Jesus is alright, I know he’s alright
Jesus is alright, you know he’s alright
Jesus is alright, we know he’s alright
Jesus is alright, we know he’s alright
[now we come to the pay off]
I’m down with the one that is known as the Son
Of the G to the O to the D never done
With the flow, in the know, on the go like a pro
Not for show cause I ain’t in the biz for the dough
Or the me, or the ray, all the dough’s gotta stay,
Cause I can’t, no I can’t, take it home anyway
Never trite when I write cause the lord is my light
And his word is my bond so ya know, he’s alright
(repeat choruses 1 and 2)
[think about it...]

Are they still playing it after three years???? I used to see this on TV when I woke up at 5:30. It's not too bad
Muse June 20th, 2004, 02:16 AM ^ Yeah I agree. I don't find the actual track so bad, it's just the manipulative way they're trying to pull in da kewl duds, I mean dudes. But hey, it's advertising we're talking about so get real Muse. I believe The Doobie Bros. did the 70s original (without the added rap bits of course). I haven't heard all the of the DC Talk version by the way.
I like this line in the rap ---> "Then I’ll keep my beat up nova" (I might inherit that for appropriate yet cryptic usage).
From God to Gawd......these type are gunna be around with us for a very, very, very long time. As long as there is demand I guess (esp. from some of you losers).
"C'moan, ewhhhhh yeahhhh, call me now, 1900-666-Oh.Oh.Ohhhhhhhhhhhh"

The fast forward/full frontal send up of those ads was fantastic.
Blind guy with black glasses holding the leash of his guide dog: "A game? I'd like to see that!"
rondeez June 20th, 2004, 04:00 AM im suprised noone has mentioned the classic VB ads.
the one with the catchy music and "for a hard earned thirst".
ive remember it for as long as i can remember and it looks like an 80's ad.
they usually show it during the footy... though very seldom now i have still seen it in the past few years.
Fabian June 20th, 2004, 05:08 AM For the Sydneysiders the ad for the Ski Clearance Sale at Leichhardt Town Hall is back again this year, which is identical to last years :bash:
Fabian June 20th, 2004, 05:43 AM A few of the tic tacs ads survived for an eternity and looked like they were created before colour television they look so old... I remember seeing the same adverts for years on end. The dumb one with the tennis players.
That one has been around since 1995!!!!
And the tennis player ad was for Extra - sugar free gum.
Muse June 20th, 2004, 05:49 AM You'll forever notice on sydney T.V. that the abundance of chains offering either furniture, lighting or rugs always, always, always have an outlet at Auburn (if not Granville).

And a number of them featured panos of their store from a chopper eg the first ever Harvey Norman ad (Thats where the first outlet opened). Bunnings also would do a pano of their Auburn store in the days before it merged with it's competitot Hardwarehouse back in 2001.
Amaruu June 21st, 2004, 05:10 AM They brought back the Go-Go Mobile ad a while back. That one is a classic.
I reckon all the yellow pages ads are amusing.
Fabian June 21st, 2004, 11:18 AM Agreed Amaru. The "Not Happy Jan" one is my fav. The woman who the boss gets annoyed with looked like my year 7 maths teacher lol
Today, I saw a new ad for Apollo Blinds, based at Flemington in Sydney on Channel 10. For the first time in about 3-4 years they have the guys singing out the phone number 132 899
As for radio ads, a few old ones have popped out of nowhere as of lately
A few week's ago, The KFC "Go Colonel" ads from 2000 popped out of nowhere for a special promo they were doing that weekend. They only ran it for the weekend.
Over the past year or so, the Solace ads from 1995-96 have been heard occasionally as well.
Muse June 21st, 2004, 12:02 PM Wasn't the go-go mobile add in 2 parts? They played the 1st part at the beginning of the break, then the 2nd shorter follow-up at the end of the break.
...and CULWULLA got on the "Not happy Jan" train for a long time with development project cancellations or hold-ups.
There was a 3rd in the Telstra series. It was actually the 1st they showed and I thought the funniest. The guy was trying to order his partner some lingerie over the phone as a present, didn't want to be caught and hid in the cupboard with the nickers. She follows the phone cord only to find him hiding there like a pervert with her bra 'n nickers. lololol
Avatar June 21st, 2004, 12:43 PM Oh my most hated ads, both of which have been going forever!... the Kelly Country suit ad campaign and the I love Rima shoes ad campaigns...
As if anyone in their right mind would by such Australian Made crap, you only have to look at their dated marketing, bullshit pariochialism and crap merchandise to realise they suck.

Rima Shoes was done by none other than Mr Cityrail - Grant Goldman. It was one of those El-Cheapo ads that never really changed. It could of been much worse like this one for a Penrith Shoe Store with a bad song with the virtually the same words and the ad just showing people's feet dancing with different shoes. Rima Shoes closed down last year after fires destroyed the Punchbowl and later Arncliffe stores. Their ad's will never adore the screens of our Tv's again.
If it wasn't for Kelly Country advertising on TV, I wouldn't of bought a suit there and my parents were looking for something affordable as I had a family event at the time. The footage is very outdated - at least a decade old. As for the music, I think they changed it a few years ago.
They sell fairly good suits, tailor made and they can make adjustments for you (like they for mine at no extra cost), and pretty good service instore. It's very affordable too.

Getting off track... sorry to slag on your business attire Fabian. Suits are generally better made in hong kong and singapore... just give them your details get measured up while you are there and you can order away all you want from the comfort of Australia years after your intial fitting.
Fabian June 22nd, 2004, 05:45 AM Does anyone remember the Sydney Olympic Bid ads from 1992-93??? which featured the song "Share the Spirit"
I remember The Olympic Store in Centrepoint playing the full and original version in 2000. The only change was replacing the logo used in the bid (The Opera House sails in the Olympic colours) with the eventual logo (runner with the Opera House in the background). Nothing from Atlanta was used, keeping Olympic footage from Barcelona.
Avatar - The Blockout ads also has used colour predating the arrvial of colour.
hoffburger June 24th, 2004, 09:37 AM my favourite long lasting series of ads has to be "John Gill the timber man". im guessing its probably just a queensland company but the idea of putting chicks in early 90s bikinis holding big planks of wood is gold in my opinion
Blend June 24th, 2004, 09:39 AM ^^ lol that add is funny. Its so old looking. The clothes and the whole style looks... (i cant name an era.. 80s?). and the commentary.. "but youd rather look at pretty girls"
hoffburger June 24th, 2004, 09:44 AM ^^ lol that add is funny. Its so old looking. The clothes and the whole style looks... (i cant name an era.. 80s?). and the commentary.. "but youd rather look at pretty girls"
its a good ad because they tell the truth, any sane male would rather look at chicks than a peice of wood (even though they are horribly out of fashion)
Blend June 24th, 2004, 10:04 AM id prefer to see chunks of timber, when talking about that add. In any other case which has .. in fashion females, then yes.
That add is quite lame tho lol
dynamoultraclean June 24th, 2004, 10:13 AM Whilst it's new "Sultanas from the grapevine" is sure to last an eternity.
Blend June 24th, 2004, 10:19 AM my god! I once walked for bout an hour and a half at 1am alone (nevermind the reasons lol). but the entire time, over and over and over... "sultanas from the grape vine.. the look so good and really taste fine.. oohh ohh sultanas from the greap vine.." "oohh oohh it looks like mummas lost the plot.. whats this..." and so on. OVER AND OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hoffburger June 24th, 2004, 01:17 PM hehe, those ads suck arse. it sounds like theyve had to digitally enhance the kids voices to make them sound half decent (notice i said "half" decent ;)) and now theyve brought out one about eating cereal as a snakck. as if thats a new concept :bash:
Fabian June 24th, 2004, 01:28 PM Whilst it's new "Sultanas from the grapevine" is sure to last an eternity.
The second one is a bloody fizzer. Bring the first one back.
And I'm having enough of those folks in the Sydney CBD carrying around placcards promoting sales of Manchester, needleware, tapestry etc.
All month people have been walking around the centre of Sydney with placcards promoting a sale at a needlecraft store. They bombard you with pamphlets at the same time
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid123/p139139cbb519b881757197600a018648/f822fd2e.jpg
Be prepared to be bombarded if your around the QVB. Same for the Pitt St mall. I wonder if they aware if that the more areas they are around, the more likely they will bring in business.

In the end people don't give a damn about the sale like here with people looking away. Their presence even defaced this pic that I took as the Athens Torch Relay made it's way through Sydney :bleep:

Muse June 25th, 2004, 12:43 AM The second one is a bloody fizzer. Bring the first one back. How true!! B-I-G fizzer-rama.
All of Kellogs' commercials are lame, with lame people and lame punch-lines. I think they stick to The U.S. formula of not overstepping the boundaries in any way.
eg. Kellogs' K-time Bar.
Girly A: Yumm, thaaaat's greaaaaat *grabs whole bar after trying morsel*
Girly B: *In surprise* Hey!!
Girly A: *Well, you said I come have some*
...and it's supposed to be funny or "cute" :? Well, especially not after the 20th time let alone even the first (and Girly A's face reaaaaally annoys me too).
Jimmy James June 25th, 2004, 10:23 PM I disagree - those Crunchy Nut ads are funny, and that one where the farmer shows his corn to the head of Kellogs (who is a giant green rooster!) apart from that though the kellogs commercials are lame, plus I haven't seen a Rice Bubbles ad in years - whatever happened to Snap Crackle and Pop!
Aside from that an even worse offender is Uncle Toby's with their godawful promotions featuring Australian Swimmers - Thorpe, Perkins and Hackett (especially Hackett for that twist ad) should all hang their heads in shame.
The only good health-snack commercial of late is that one where the priest flogs the bar off that woman on the escalator!
Muse June 25th, 2004, 11:54 PM Crunchy Nut adds? Pffft! Lame as!
"Just another Kellogs' Crunchy Nut really". Took the boardroom a whole week to come up with that one.
I saw my favourite last night. Not supposed to be funny but I laugh every time I hear her say 1900-666-Oh.Oh.Ohhhhhhhhh
Fabian June 26th, 2004, 03:46 AM I'm agreeing with Jimmy James about the Crunchy Nut ads. Instead of using music to sell their food, they turn to humor where people act out of the ordinary.
As for the second Sultana Bran ad, I was watching it last night, and the boys were barely even singing. Their mums voice was off par as well. There is none of the dancing which made the first one good.
Muse June 26th, 2004, 04:06 AM Well, you're easily pleased. *Man picks up whole bowl of Crunchy Nuts and stuffs face. So out-of the-ordinary* hardy-har-har.
That 2nd one has to go!
Fabian July 5th, 2004, 11:21 PM The Little Do er (carpet store here in Sydney) are running a radio ad on MIX FM which hasn't changed from previous campgains. It's about 2-3 years old..
Fabian July 5th, 2004, 11:28 PM im suprised noone has mentioned the classic VB ads.
the one with the catchy music and "for a hard earned thirst".
ive remember it for as long as i can remember and it looks like an 80's ad.
they usually show it during the footy... though very seldom now i have still seen it in the past few years.
I recently saw it on the big screen for the Souths Vs St George Game. I'm sure I've seen it a number of times on TV as of late.
Fabian July 6th, 2004, 11:58 AM The Butter Methol ads from 2003 with the girl going to the shop in the pouring rain making a return again this year.
Also another radio ad is surviving the test of time. Country Manner???, a furniture chain here in Sydney, has running their ads on MIX FM for a year now with the same format everytime with changes in wording. I wonder if it will complete a second year.
Everyday Living is another furniture chain which has had ads surviving the test of time, keeping the same format since I first saw their ads on Christmas Day 2001.
Blend July 6th, 2004, 12:01 PM i like carlton draft ads
swifty78 July 7th, 2004, 02:07 AM I remember the Endrust ad. You know the one with a lady buying a Ford Cortina and it went something like 'ughENdrust' ?
Up in Central Qld theres an ad for Mr Shnieder carpet cleaning with a little kid spilling food over the carpet and that ad has been on for so long that the kid prolly had his 21st by now lol.
I'll never forget the GogoMobile ads and all them other yellow pages ads, Ads for AAMI.
Ads that drive me up the wall is Sultana Bran, Wizard homeLoans with that oversized walking poo monster lol and the breakfast ceral ad where you have over 10000 taste buds keep them happy.
Fabian July 12th, 2004, 01:32 AM A few of the tic tacs ads survived for an eternity and looked like they were created before colour television they look so old... I remember seeing the same adverts for years on end. The dumb one with the tennis players.
Looks like they pulled the plug on those tic tac ads at looooooooooooooooong last. They now play one from the States :bleep::wallbash::bash:
Muse July 12th, 2004, 02:12 AM ^ Was that the one at the end where she is dubbed into an Aussie voice, @ the end "Great huh?" or is that Mentos?
Fabian, every time that horrible newer Sultana Bran commercial comes on, I laugh about our posts about it. It is like just sooooo bad.
I was watching one of the Channel 9 Footy Shows yesterday and they played the first Tina Turner promo singing "What You See Is What You Get", just for old times sake. Still held up and the promo itself didn't age that much.
Fabian July 12th, 2004, 03:11 AM ^ Was that the one at the end where she is dubbed into an Aussie voice, @ the end "Great huh?" or is that Mentos?
That was it.
JayT July 13th, 2004, 05:11 AM Currently my favorite adds at the moment are those 'kitch', 'sexy and beautiful' diet coke adds with lime.
If you look in the background of some shots you can see the Broadbeach skyline.

Jimmy James August 1st, 2004, 02:42 PM @ Jimmy James. I love the artistic genious of cheap adds. I would kill to see the Treasury Casino Afro guy.

Brisbane forumers will remember this ad for Treasury Casino!
Here's the Afro dude - strutting down the street - uptight and outta sight

Fabian August 17th, 2004, 06:54 AM The Olympics have some bought back some ads and promotions to life but some still have survived the test of time.
The Visa ad featuring the Scottish runner from 2000 is back, exactly the same but Sydney 2000 is replaced with Athens 2004.
Qantas "I still call Australia Home" promotion is back as good as ever, and still makes a good campgain a decade after being launched. The Australian Youth Choir which has featured in the last few campgains feature again, finding themselves in even more destinations at home and overseas. I'm impressed by the choir's higher level of interaction with their surroundings which makes it a more eyecatching campgain
Telstra's "I'am Australian" campgain featuring "The Whitlams" is still doing the rounds after two years. Perfect timing for this ad to play too to concide with the olympics. A great way to boost patriotism at this very important time.
aussie man August 17th, 2004, 08:56 AM Does anyone have the current or older QANTAS 'I still call Australia Home' adds?? If you do, would it be possible to download it somehow??
Thanks guys,
MAtt:)
Fabian November 19th, 2004, 12:11 AM The Chrisco ads have been fairly similar with small changes eg settings, but were still reminded each year by Santa Anna following Christmas to order their catalogue and place orders for the following Christmas, and mid year (now) were told to add to the orders with Jingle Bells played in the background. These run during the middle of the day during programs such as Jerry Springer.
Muse, I didn't see her this week during Jerry Springer. I bet she was planning her next promotion.
Where is that pic/s of her by the way?
They have now taken out the music and placed her with a family who she thinks are grateful for buying her hampers (they take no notice of her :)). She looks like a million years old. I freak out when I see her now. :runaway:
And 200 hampers went missing near Newcastle over the weekend. Serves them straight :D
Principes June 18th, 2005, 02:21 PM Thats the "5k difference up there equals 27k difference down here" ad right?
It does seem as if it could be effective - certainly I'd never thought about it like that.
LOL i cant get over that add, its so annoying.
Principes June 18th, 2005, 02:22 PM I like the wizard home load add, where the "mortgage beast" gets slapped.
smeghead June 18th, 2005, 07:46 PM Here's some ads that have not aged well:
This is a Darling Harbour Tourism ad from 1992-ish.

BTW, please don't stream constantly, I'd rather you just download them once to your hard drive and repeat viewing at your pleasure.
Fabian June 18th, 2005, 11:59 PM I remember the Darling Harbour ad. they did those ads in 1993-1994.
expat_marla June 19th, 2005, 02:13 AM what about the morning program with bert newton? i reckon that is the longest regularly running advert. kind of amazes me that the program, which is advert after advert actually has a following.
OzFrog June 19th, 2005, 02:44 AM And here's a mystery TV channel promo:
1MB WMV
One can only begin to imagine why the heck you still have an old 90210 ad on your computer. My god that is dated! :weirdo:
tayser June 19th, 2005, 04:44 AM LOL @ Darling Harbour.
castrovalva June 19th, 2005, 06:25 AM Not so much an ad but an ad concept that may well have "survived" but I am certainly sick of are the "Ajax Spray and Wipe" adds.
"Spray and Wipe"
"Ajax Spray and Wipe"
"Ajax Spray and Wipe - Antibacterial"
"Some other new fandangled Ajax Spray and Wipe - Antibacterial with some new feature"
I feel sorry for that woman attempting to maintain interest in singing increasingly lame lyrics to that annoying jingle as the jingle writers attempt to wrangle whatever the new feature is into the tired old tune. Eg. "...Spray and Wipe works faster... to clean up grease and pasta..."
I don't watch commercial telly much these days. But that hasn't stopped them. The latest incarnation of adds have infiltrated the PA system at my local supermarket. Harrrrr!!!
Fabian June 19th, 2005, 11:47 PM Channel Ten last night was playing the snickers ad from 1999 where the two surfers opt to eat their snickers instead of going for a dip with two ladies.

or "9481 1111 pizza hut delivery (repeat) "in Sydney. It was even better when it was just 481 1111.
Barsby June 20th, 2005, 07:58 AM its "13 11 66, pizza hut dilivery!" here :)
renell June 20th, 2005, 08:50 AM Hmm.... I don't know the usual lifespan of ads.. but that AAMI ad has been constantly evovling throughout the year.
Fabian June 23rd, 2005, 01:33 PM The Blockout ad will be celebrating 10 years on Sydney TV's very soon. It recently took some "long service" leave and a revised ad with "Interest Free" flashing a bottom and a flashing website at the end has just appeared on TV's across the city.
Ron Bennett "This Summer the suit is back" campaign is still going after six months still promoting it's summer (2004-05) range. They seem to think with Sydney's mild weather that summer is year long event or simply want the men to get ready for next summer.

Fabian April 3rd, 2006, 07:30 AM Those LJ Hooker ads have pretty much stood the test of time! I remember watching them when I was about 3 or 4, and behold, they're still alive and well!
The ads have been changed every few years but the music is still the same. The current series with the parents and the little girl has been around for the past three years!!! Their last ad has an album over their purchase of their house :)
LJ Hookers best ads were in the late 80's and early 90's.
And update no 100 on Blockout Shutters. Still going
crawf April 3rd, 2006, 09:43 AM lol the past 3 years????
i dont think so, try 10 or 12 years!!!!!!
i remember the lj hooker when i was in primary school and me & my friends used to make up the most stupidest jokes about it, lol
Fabian April 5th, 2010, 12:46 AM Blockout Shuuters still playing the same ad in 2010!!!
And anyone noticed the Chicken Tonight ad from the mid 1990's has been recycled, except for minor changes with showing the product, you still have the same chicken flapping and chorus as in the past.
deranged April 5th, 2010, 03:17 AM How about "threads that have survived the test of time"?
swifty78 April 5th, 2010, 07:26 AM They even brought back the Old Chicken Tonight ads.
Eco-rat April 5th, 2010, 07:34 AM The 70s had some wonderful ads. Uncle Sam, Razzamattazz, Kimbies, the Ring of Confidence, You're Soaking in It. Them were the days!
AlphaBravo April 5th, 2010, 08:10 AM ^^For some reason, the ads I remember from when i was about 4 were for a product called "ICE".
It was marketed as being "As cool as Ice" an had a blonde bimbo and a trucker advertising it for when you felt hopt...you just spray it on and "its cool as ice"
Really tacky 70's ads i think....
beastjim April 6th, 2010, 03:37 AM RACQ have been recycling recently up here as well. Ie the add with the old guy doing the bunny ear fingers behind the head.
Choko April 6th, 2010, 04:58 AM Wonder how much Big Sirro gets paid when they play the Blockout Shutter ads on the radiation box? It's still doing the rounds despite being 15 years old.
Down in the Illawarra, Computer Town Australia had a string of ads with a very catchy jingle ending with:
"Computer Town Australia
Windang Road at Windang"
I think it's been around for many years (less so recently).
Melburnians: Is that ad with the Italian dude with stores in Foot-es-cray and Bruns-a-wick still getting airplay?

It seems that there's a grudge in New Zealand about us 'owning' all their financial institutions. I remember there was some article when K-Rudd bought in the 12% Superannuation contribution with Kiwi papers claiming that we were becoming an "all consuming capital beast".
I wonder if the Commonwealth Bank aired these ads over in NZ...

Giorgio May 20th, 2010, 04:27 AM Well that would make sense, the pilot is the only one you could actually understand!
Marty_ May 20th, 2010, 04:51 AM I don't get it. Why the body paint?
Dimethyltryptamine May 20th, 2010, 05:15 AM It's the 'bare essential', maybe? I'm not sure either, but it looks cool.
Erektion May 20th, 2010, 11:14 AM My favourite!

Dimethyltryptamine May 20th, 2010, 11:18 AM lol. That ad was so blurry for a second there I though it was meant to be in 3D.
badbehaviour May 20th, 2010, 12:41 PM Is this really how Kiwis think of us?
Nah, not really.. :P
I think the idea behind the commercial is that Mitre 10 is basically the NZ equivalent of Bunnings in Australia - and since Bunnings moved across the ditch a few years ago they've really captured a lot of the market and been competitive here.
I guess with these ads they're trying to push the whole WE'RE KIWI!!!! SUPPORT US!!! angle... but in a cute & jocular way. Way cute.
These Kiwi ads are quite funny...
Yeah similar story as above except rather than competiting with the "new Australian threat" (a la Bunnings..), Kiwibank is the new kid on the block in a room full of Australian-owned banks. They've actually been really successful and part of that would probably be their marketing angle (WE'RE KIWI OWNED!!!!!). Though there are numerous other very careful strategies that have contributed to Kiwibank's success, I won't bore you with the details.
On another note, our 'ASB Bank' is the NZ-branded subsidiary of Commonwealth Bank Australia - so those Commonwealth Bank ads are pretty hard going! We're getting played like cheap ukelele's man...
I don't get it. Why the body paint?
It's the 'bare essential', maybe? I'm not sure either, but it looks cool.
The slogan is "We've got nothing to hide!" - referring to their policy of up-front costing... no hidden fees/surcharges. So what better excuse to get nekkid! They went on record to say that they thought the tasteful nudity would be a way of making the cliche and typically tedious on-board safety video something that people would actually watch, and not 'wait out'. Whether the viewers absorb the safety instructions is the next question I would think, but anyway...
They shot some actual TV ads in the body paint as well, not just the in-flight safety demo... including one with the rather sexy Air NZ Chief Executive Rob Fyfe - who was also voted NZ's sexiest businessman by readers of one of the big online media websites over here (stuff.co.nz) last year.
He's the one that looks like a CEO...

Milan Luka May 21st, 2010, 01:01 AM - reminiscent of the GOLDSTEIN ads that ASB have been running for years over here. although i don't really love the humour of the goldstein ads...
Goldsteins probably run his course but some of those ads were hilarious. Like when he opened the bagel store chain and had his stupid head plastered all over bus stops. And when he got the Japanese investors in- "I just flew in from Wellington, and boy are my arms tired".
Korean count?
You are in Burnside afterall!
castrovalva May 21st, 2010, 06:06 PM A couple of classic King Gee ads,
