A run-down tennis court and disused play area will be cleared to make way for Wearside's fourth walk-in health centre.
Health chiefs announced in September that a new Primary Care Centre would be built in Houghton to complement the existing centres at Grindon Lane and Bunny Hill. A third centre is also due to open in Washington this spring.

Now councillors on SundADVERTISEMENTerland's ruling Cabinet have agreed to sell the disused tennis courts and hard-surfaced playing area at Houghton Sports Complex to the Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust (STPCT) to develop the new centre.

The existing primary care centres provide walk-in services for people with minor injuries and illnesses, as well as other specialist care clinics to which patients can be referred by their GP.

Coun Kath Rolph, who represents the Houghton ward, said: "Houghton residents have been keen to see this development for a lot of years and people are very pleased to have the city's fourth walk-in centre in Houghton."

As well as the disused play area and tennis court, the STPCT will also buy part of the existing car park and some grassed areas, creating a total 1.3hectares of land on Brinkburn Crescent.

The TCPT had also looked at the possibility of building the new centre on land at the Cherry Knowle Hospital in Ryhope, but Houghton was chosen as a more suitable site.

Mel Speding, responsible for culture and leisure in Wearside, said the new centre could link in with the sports complex to provide an even better service to users of both sites.

Council chiefs also say the council services could be based in the new facility, which would free up office space elsewhere to cut back on both building maintenance costs and energy usage.

The move does mean the sports complex's recently developed skateboard park will have to be shifted, but officers say it can be set up in another part of the site.

A planning application will now be submitted for the development, and Coun David Allan, responsible for resources, said in the "unlikely event" that planning permission was refused, the council would buy the land back on the same terms.

if this new centre is as good as grindon, then it's good news for the people of houghton and surounding areas, also good news on the jobs front.

there is another walk in centre to be built in sunderland, the council want to build it in houghton and are asking the people for their views, they would hope to begin work this autumn,

I think this is a good area to build a walk in centre because it's fairly central and accessible for all the neighboring areas

Another Walk in Centre, thats four now, really good news for the Houghton and surrounding areas, the Council gets stick for various things, but you have to give them credit for some policies and especially Health.

More excellent news for those communities in the coalfield area. I know well how much of a difference the Bunny Hill Centre has made to the northwestern communities of Town End Farm, Downhill and Hylton Castle, and more of these centres (backed up by children's centres, SureStart, Wellness Centres and council customer service provision) are a vital building block in the mending of these communities.

Hi denm,

Would you like a 'Project Thread' set up for this project?

I can set that up and 'transfer' the relevant posts (there are about eight or nine) since the project was first revealed up to and including your new ones above, out of this 'Summary of Projects' thread, into the individual Project Thread.

It makes it easier to follow a project, I think, if it has its own thread rather than having to look through the 'summary' thread.

I will then ask N E 4 Ever to add the project to the Development Summary (as you suggest) and 'link it' to the new Project Thread.

Let me know what you think.

Before I proceed, can I just confirm that the 'Houghton Walk-in Health Centre', is this (same) project below, that is described in the NHS North East proposal (dated 16th July 2009) entitled "The Single Stage Full Business Case for Houghton le Spring Primary Care Centre"?

It states that the "HOUGHTON PRIMARY CARE CENTRE" is planned to contain . .

• Walk-in Centre / Minor Injuries Unit
• Planned care accommodation
• Diagnostic services
• 24 bed rehabilitation unit (see image below)
• Administration & support accommodation for staff
• Rehabilitation / Physiotherapy suite
• Wellness studio shared with Sunderland City Council
• Shared community facilities
• Café including extensive catering facilities

In other words, the 'walk in centre' is only one part of this development, so is this the same development that we are talking about as the 'Houghton Walk-in Health Centre'?

Thanks.

.
This project was initially covered on the "Sunderland - Full Summary of Projects Thread" and this new dedicated Project Thread has (as can be seen) been set up by transferring those threads into this new thread . . .

Summary of the Project . . .

The 'NHS North East' proposal (dated 16th July 2009) entitled "The Single Stage Full Business Case for Houghton le Spring Primary Care Centre explains that the "HOUGHTON PRIMARY CARE CENTRE" is planned to contain . .

• Walk-in Centre / Minor Injuries Unit
• Planned care accommodation
• Diagnostic services
• 24 bed rehabilitation unit (see image below)
• Administration & support accommodation for staff
• Rehabilitation / Physiotherapy suite
• Wellness studio shared with Sunderland City Council
• Shared community facilities
• Café including extensive catering facilities

In other words, though often referred to as "The Houghton Walk-In Health Centre", it actually contains a great deal more than just that.

A MULTIMILLION pound health centre has opened its doors for the first time.

The £21million Houghton Primary Care Centre will boast 24 in-patient beds for rehabilitation, a minor surgery suite, community physiotherapy and clinical assessment for musculoskeletal conditions once fully operational.

It will also provide mental health and healthy lifestyle services, diagnostics, and facilities for patients with long-term conditions such as heart or respiratory disease and diabetes.

The energy-efficient facility ties in with the £2.4million renovation of neighbouring Houghton Sports Complex, following the completion of a new wellness centre.

The fourth of its kind to be built on Wearside, the centre has been developed by NHS South of Tyne and Wear, which covers Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust (TPCT), and aims to improve access to health services for local communities.
