View Full Version : Hamburg - Germany
DiggerD21 June 17th, 2004, 10:33 AM I know, you wouldn´t call it a real skyline, but please rate Hamburg.

Kaneda June 17th, 2004, 11:10 AM 4.5, It has a few skyscrapers, but nothing special. It also has some of Europes most beautiful church spires. I remebr last time I was there, I stod on the top of some building, and I looked around, and there were spires everywhere. :)
I've seen on a map, that a bit outside the city center, there was a skyscraper as a part of a congresscenter. I haven't been able to find anything abut it. Does anybody know wich tower it is ? :)
DiggerD21 June 17th, 2004, 11:15 AM Of course I know it.

With 108m, it is Hamburgs tallest Highrise (but still smaller than most of the Church Towers).
SoboleuS June 17th, 2004, 11:23 AM It has some kind of skyline, but rather historic, not modern 6/10
Skyliner June 17th, 2004, 01:32 PM Hamburg is really beautiful! :)
DiggerD21 June 17th, 2004, 04:30 PM Wasn't there a special design proposed here in the harbourarea (something with Porsche in its name) ?
Yeah, a big car dealer planned to build the Porsche Office Point (http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=166252) But as far as I know there still exists only this one drawing and they don´t know yet, how tall this building should be (somewhere between 100-150m).
Nick in Atlanta June 18th, 2004, 03:06 AM 8/10 I love port cities and there is nothing wrong with the tallest building being a church.
chaos83 June 18th, 2004, 09:05 AM I notice that German cities are good at preserving their old looks and structure. Because of that I can easlily recognize and feel German culture. Along with some modern buildings ,they form a perfect harmony . Love cities like that. :) :)
Skyliner June 18th, 2004, 03:48 PM I agree chaos83!
Cities which mix new and old in perfect harmony are the best!
London, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, Frankfurt, etc.

Icanseeformiles June 23rd, 2004, 04:51 AM Like many beautiful European cities it makes you think of how many magnificent buildings were lost during wwII.
Although the view from the observation tower would be lovely, the structure it'self is as ugly as sin.
DiggerD21 June 23rd, 2004, 07:33 PM I don´t think the TV Tower is so ugly. It was built in 1968 and in comparison with other german TV-Towers built at that time (or even later) it belongs to the better looking ones.
Polishman June 24th, 2004, 03:32 PM I like it for a cool boulevard and mix of modern with old architecture
I gave 9 in spite of that is not a city with modern skyline

J@ckal! July 1st, 2004, 07:49 PM Like the first pic the best. Historic is beautiful. Skyline is not impressive. In Europe there are but a few city's with nice skylines. They will probably build more skyscrappers eventualy, but are restricted by rules like a certain amount of daylight in every office-space. But the historic beauty is magnificant already!

Mercian April 12th, 2006, 05:50 PM An old stamping ground of mine - & voted it an 8. The city needs to be viewed composed of four separate areas - old historic (restored) core where church spires dominate & height of other buildings is controlled so as not to impact, the huge dock area - the height here being in the form of cranes, and two modern foci - one to the NW (TV tower = WOW!) and other to the E where there is lots of 'under-construction'. I think that variety is the key in Hamburg's case (- rather than absolute height) and as an ensemble it works very well.

There ain't no Babylonian skyline but the city is elegant and stylistically confident. A great place to live and that's what a city should be.
But for the skyline ... hmm ... 6/10.

Ok it got a few churches. Impressive? no.
Hamburg is a wonderful city, but its skyline is crap.
erbse October 3rd, 2008, 12:38 PM It has no highrise skyline. So what do you call crap when there's nothing? ;)
Anyway, a skyline doesn't belong to this city. Perhaps outside of the city center, but that's not too likely to happen. In fact, most European cities shouldn't have any modern skyline. It fucks up the historical ones in most cases and just erect dead business zones. Just imagine Prague with glass phalusses around the historical core...
There are some exceptions thou. Paris works well with a skyline, so does Frankfurt.
But you have to concentrate skyscraper development on a place way outside the historical center. In case of Frankfurt, it's enough to place them just outside of the old town, because it was heavily destroyed.
goschio October 3rd, 2008, 12:57 PM This is the "rate the skyline " section. So of course I rate a city based on its skyline. And IMO it doen't deserve more than 4/10. And this already includes the historic churches and spires.
Hamburg is a wonderful city with a very high quality of life. But the skyline is nothing to write home about. Hamburg is a flat city. Whether it should have a skyline or not is very irrelevant in this regard.
erbse October 3rd, 2008, 01:32 PM ^ Well, I think you got my point.
(If you say "that already includes the churches and spires", you basically just rate these buildings, because there is no highrise skyline.)
That's the problem about the 'Rate our Skylines' section. It's based on plain highrise skylines.
We probably should establish a section for historic skylines. That'd make such discussions gratuitous.

First of all I would just like to say I think Hamburg is very beautiful, but the all the 'non-skyscrapers and only historic buildings' is nonsense.
If you're able to mix modern and high towers with the current architecture, like London, Paris etc. you should. I'm not talking about 500 m Dubai glass skyscrapers instead of an old and beautiful church.
I just hate the fact that in my city (Copenhagen), gets a lot of exciting projects from architects like Fosters +Partners, Norman Foster, Liebeskind etc, still most of them are located outside the city core. When someone rarely suggests to place a big skyscraper (in Scandinavian terms: 100-140m) in the inner city most people start to freak out, even though it could be very tastefully made. So we only have about 11-20 projects in Copenhagen (most of them 85 m. placed in Ørestad, low height 'cause of the airport) and a few 100-140 m. proposals. We probably do much better than most European cities, but in comparison with eg. London it's just sad.
In the simple way: If you stop the development in a city, you stop the city.

Even for a historical skyline Hamburg has not enough spires, churches and so on (and not the density)
So people from Hamburg should not react angry, when this city is critisied because of it's skyline. I don't like the answers like "For a historical skyline you need no skyscrapers"
okay, this is true. But it is as I wrote. Even not enozgh for a historcal one. There are much better ones in Germany (Luebeck, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Munich ...) And theire historical skylines are not ruined by ugly and dark 50 to 70 meters high ramshackle huts from the 1970th. At all I don't like the skyline of my hometown. But for Hamburgs shape on streetlevel and its habitants I would give a 10/10!

I think Hamburg is quite a nice city (been there once), most well known for its harbour which is one of the world's busiest (#3 in Europe after Rotterdam and Antwerp if I'm informed right). Industrial areas are present but not more than average, there are much more industrial areas in the Ruhr Area towns as well as in many East-German (and also all bigger Wallonian) towns. Hamburg is one of the few german cities with constant population growth and has a GDP well above the german average.
Wikipedia states:
The city is a major tourist destination both for domestic and overseas visitors, receiving about 7.7 million overnight stays in 2008.[4] Hamburg ranked 23rd in the world for livability in 2009,[5] higher in some alternate rankings[5] and in 2010 the city ranked 10th in the world.

and also one of the most livable ones in the world (rank 23, mercer survey)
Xorcist September 5th, 2011, 09:51 PM one of the worst germany cities???? just because of the fact that some fanatic idiots studied there and no one ever knew that they planned to kill thousands of people? come on...just think about that...you can´t blame a cities university for that...they could even have studied in lille...so i can´t accept that. and industrie? hey, hamburg is one of the richest regions in germany and europe...The port of Hamburg is the third-largest port in Europe (after the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Antwerp) and it is among the twenty largest in the world. if you want to know more about hamburg try this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburg

There is a difference between Rotterdam and Hamburgs Harbour-Shape. When I was in Rotterdam I noticed,
that the "real harbour" is far outside the city. In Hamburg the "active harour" is closer to the city, so you
will see big ships passing by not only on some special celebration days.

Who says that? It is true that Hamburg has some incredibly damn ugly areas, but which bigger city has not?
A real bad aspect of Hamburg are the people there. Hamburgs inahbitans are arrogant, perhaps the most arrogant in Germany.
Totally convinced, that their city is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and on eyeline with sidney or RdJ. I lived there for
over 5 Years now and that one aspect really pisses me off. But it is the only bad ascpect for me. At least Hamburg is f****g awesome.
Xorcist September 5th, 2011, 10:08 PM i´m south-german, but i know some hamburgers (hehehe), and they are all really great...it´s just the north-german mentality, they seem to be arrogant...but they aren´t...you can have a really great time with them...and well...we all new that berlin is the best city in the world :D btw...some nice hamburg-pictures: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=827726

I grew up in Hamburgs Suburbs, so I am northgerman, too. And it is funny - people often say they thought I was arrogant first, but after 2 hours everybody loves me. :D

I had some bad encounters too when I was in St. Georg (district to the east of the city centre), some guy tried to mess with me (but won't try again I suppose ;) ) and I got adressed by 2 (ugly) whores there..
But overall I think it is still an amazingly unique city

Nah, they are just ignorant. ;)
But I also have problems with the Hamburg mentality (and I am a Hamburger myself!). We Hamburg-people are just too distant and cautious with making new friends, which is then often considered as being arrogant.
Xorcist September 6th, 2011, 08:10 AM  ahhh they are just a bit "cooler" than the southgermans...
Isek September 6th, 2011, 08:50 AM ^^
The fact that some of the 9/11 terrorists resided in Hamburg for some years really affects your point of view on the city? I even guess that there are more Arabs in any medium sized French city than in Hamburg.
