Abandoned coffee estates in Murang’a, which have become criminal hide-outs, will soon get a facelift after a multi billion company unveiled plans to construct a shopping mall matching Nairobi’s up-market village market.
The Mukeu area, located in Kandara district, along the Nairobi-Nyeri highway, is synonyms with criminal activity, where thugs have been known to lay illegal roadblocks, before robbing, and sometimes killing their victims.
Kandara District Development Committee approved Thika Green Company Sh25 billion plans to construct a mall in the area.
"We must support development as it will create employment to hundreds of the youth as well as ready market for farm produce," said the Local DC Patrick Meso.
Increased criminal activity, between Mukeu and Mackenzie have sent farm owners packing, abandoning their cash crop and leaving a safe-haven for goons who sneak into the highway, and return to the hideout after causing mayhelm.
Pineapple growing Delmonte Company has also been a victim of the marauding criminals, who have stolen fruits from its plantations.
With the new development, the highway will get streetlights, while the firm will partner up with the local council to put up a police station in the area.
