I used to do some research before about foreign banks, insurance and hotels location around all the cities in South East Asia and I find that Jakarta has one the highest number of foreign financial firms out of all the cities in South East Asia. (Hanoi and Saigon both are catching up very fast)

These are the major banks with branches in Jalan Sudirman .. some other smaller banks have representative offices too but there are too many to list out.

Is your research pre or post '97 crisis?
When I was a student a friend of mine asked me where I wanted to work after graduation. My answer was clear, in Bank in Sudirman. Guess what, 11 years after graduation I never worked either in Bank or in any company in Sudirman... *sigh*

I do the research after the crisis .. and i still can see a lot of foreign companies in Jakarta. But they are not expanding ... the business size maye just remain the same or probably decreasing

For examples if you visit cities in SEA .. then you will find out that most of the major banks have their own buildings (Bangkok ... You can find HSBC, Citibank, ABO AMRO or Standard Chartered Bank building in the financial district) But this doesn't happen to Jakarta and most of the banks only operate as representative offices rather than branches

I reckon most of the people working in Jalan Sudirman are those businessmen from oversea because the street is filling up with all the foreign companies ... maybe there are some Indonesians working there also .. but i guess it will not be that many !!

And i also find that some of banks in Jakarta are mixed. The local bank buys the shares of the foreign bank and change the name.

The best - BNI46. Ugliest building - there's this really ugly brown/orange-ish building on sudirman just before the HI Roundabout, near the Westin Hotel construction zone.

I must say that I like the design of Menara Batavia (on the left in the 1st pic). Soon there will be 3-4 towers built in that area by the Jababeka group.

if I include Thamrin, UN building will be the ugliest one. Not only ugly but also dirty. The best is no doubt BNI '46 with its unique pen-like shape

Gotham City ... Agree ... Especially when you see it from East Parking of Senayan. Less light ..and also the form of the top of the building ....:-)

Heard many spooky stories .... but never experienced any ... :-)
So ... Don't beleive so far ... he he he ...

In fact the bomb-fire caused several casualties ....

my favourite building around sudirman is the anggana danamon complex (it looks like ngee ann city, if only anggana danamon was a wee bit taller than its current height), the stanchard building, and the Bank Niaga tower.. it won several architectural awards right?

yup...da vinci tower for the furniture shop n apartment...And i hear n read that da vinci apartment = Rp. 22 billion per unit (+furniture -all of da vinci) ..and maybe 20 floor cause in that photo was 15 floors. very2 expensive, but it's standard for the location and it's design, according to me.
now: 1 US $ = Rp. 9000,-
