teckkang August 27th, 2008, 06:16 AM Soon Seng Plaza/Fajar's hey day is over but for sentimental reason, I prefer it to remain as it is - a major facelift/renovation is OK but not demolishing the building altogether :ohno:
it depends on the demand, If there's no demand, it's definitely not viable to demolish and renovate it. Yes, it has strong sentimental value to the malaccans. It used to be the major shopping complex in malacca. n I had my first McD there. :)

I share the same view with you. I actually miss Soon Seng Plaza a lot, I also had my first McD there. My first experience with arcade game was also there.I was there 2 months back but the whole building is like aarghh...don't know how to describe.Hope they can do a facelift on that building (I know it is quite impossible looking at the demand now, but who know's maybe one day we can enjoy a good shopping again in Soon Seng Plaza)

12 Peniaga Kraftangan Minta Tapak Sementara

IF YOU visit Taman Tasik Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur at night from now on, you will be sure to feel a sense of emptiness. Why?

New base: The Eye on Malaysia will be relocated to Malacca soon.
There is a vacuum there now that the lights of the iconic Eye on Malaysia at the lake garden are switched off following the final day of its operation there on Merdeka Day.
The 60m-high Ferris wheel had been operating at the Taman Titiwangsa since January last year, but it will be dismantled and relocated to Malacca this week.
According to Widyanty Yusope, the executive director of MST AD Suria Sdn Bhd, the operator of the Eye on Malaysia, the structure was originally put up in conjunction of the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 (VMY’07), but its operation was extended to Aug 31 this year, following popular demand.
“With the conclusion of the VMY’07, our contract has also come to an end,” Widyanty said.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/9/2/central/m_06cross.jpg
Starting on Thursday: Cross explaining the dismantling process of the Ferris wheel.
“We are sad to leave Lake Titiwangsa,” MST AD Suria events marketing executive Rahyu Waris said..
Throughout the 20 months at Lake Titiwangsa, the Ferris wheel with 42 gondolas had attracted nearly 1.8 million visitors.
The once quiet Taman Titiwangsa was bustling with activities following the setting up of the tourist attraction, which took visitors up in the air to view the breathtaking Kuala Lumpur skyline during the 12-minute ride.
Widyanty: The Eye on Malaysia will be opened to public in October in Malacca.
Next to the wheel, there was an Eye Cafe for visitors to enjoy a cuppa beside the scenic lake.
The dismantling work will start on Thursday, led by four engineers from the German-Swiss manufacturer and assisted by 16 local workers.
“Only the manufacturer’s engineers and technicians know how to dismantle each part of the giant wheel and how to specially load the parts into the containers,” operations manager Graeme Cross said.
The first few steps of the dismantling process involve clearing up the walkway where visitors queued up to get on to the Ferris wheel, and taking down the fencing and entrance roof.
“After clearing the loading base, the gondolas will be taken off, followed by the storm bars, rim beams, spokes, globes and finally the axle,” Cross said.
“Given the optimum conditions, including fair weather, the work will be completed within six days. All the parts will be transported to Malacca, while the steel pins currently holding the parts together will be replaced with new ones,” he said.
In the historical city, the structure will be permanently installed at Kota Laksamana at the Malacca River mouth, close to the Straits of Malacca.
“It will be a 1.6ha leisure park equipped with a water screen, two restaurants and a space exhibition. We will develop it in three phases,” Widyanty said.
The structures at the park, according to her, will be a combination of modern and traditional buildings.
“It will be opened to the public in October and we target to have 700,000 visitors for the first year there,” Widyanty said.

R. Gomathy

Tourists will be able to explore and appreciate the many heritage buildings in the city on foot.
MALACCA: The entire core zone in this heritage city may be converted into a pedestrian's "paradise."
Director of the state rural and town planning department Zainuddin Ahamad said the pedestrian mall will cover the heart of town, including the shopping areas.
"While many tourists come here to take in our history, many others are also here to shop.
"Some may argue that shopping complexes are the major cause of traffic congestion, but we have to concede that historically Malacca was once known for trading.
"It is possible for us to have the best of both worlds by guarding our heritage while developing Malacca into a shopper's paradise at the same time," Zainuddin said.
Speaking at the "Malaysia Welcomes The World" course for 78 tourist guides, Zainuddin said if the pedestrian mall plan were implemented, multi-storey car parks would be built at Kota Laksamana.
Tourists who drive to Malacca, especially Singaporeans, will then park at Kota Laksamana and visit the heritage site on foot.
Reducing traffic congestion in Malacca city would also be a boost to tourism, he said.
He said by turning the core zone into a pedestrian mall, tourists will then be able to explore and appreciate the many heritage buildings within the city through leisurely strolls.
Meanwhile, director of the National Heritage Department's Conservation and Archeology Division Rosli Nor said the Malacca City Council has been urged to draw up strict guidelines on the restoration of property in the buffer zone around the heritage site.
This includes the height limit on buildings.
"The value of land in the zone is around RM70 to RM80 per sq ft and we cannot stop development. However, we must make it clear that new buildings will not be skyscrapers that will mar or even destroy our heritage appeal."
"The land owners must not be allowed to kill the tourism industry," Rosli said.
"Malacca and George Town are well known among heritage tourists. We are among only 887 Heritage Sites in the world. We must capitalise on this."
He added that the National Park in Pahang has been nominated for natural heritage listing, while Sungai Lembing and Kinta Valley have been nominated for both natural and cultural heritage listing.

pedestrianised streets could be applied only to general public(tourists), but not ppl staying there. Maybe only local citizens can apply for the entry pass to the area.

Yes! This is what i proposed to MBMB several times. each time i passby jonker street, i hate to see cars parked in front of the shops. the street are already narrow and yet the authority allows parking lots. It would be nice if the MS carparks built on the existing open carparks behind heeren street or the old site of pasar borong. And if MBMB can introduce vintage trams in the heritage zone would be better.

Sebanyak RM277,271.00 berjaya dikutip.
Hadir sama, Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri, Datuk Omar Kaseh; Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Pengangkutan, Penerangan dan Pengguna negeri, R Perumal; Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Perlindungan Hidupan Liar dan Taman Negara (Perhilitan), Abdul Rasid Samsuddin dan Pengarah Zoo Melaka, Mohd Nawayai Yasak.
but seriously why can't they turn panorama busses to be a PUBLIC tranportation system rather than just a TOURIST system today?

teckkang September 10th, 2008, 03:29 AM Atasi Kesesakan Di Zon Pelancongan
Swasta Dipelawa Bantu Pertingkat Infrastruktur

My father told me that this reclamation project is not funded by the government, but by private sector. Since the state government doesn't have many huge lands in inner Melaka (mostly owned by individuals), i think that's why they allowed the developer to go on with the reclamation project, in return the government gets portions of land without any expenses for the reclamation. So, they do it for money and land. Correct me if i am wrong.
daeng_jal September 13th, 2008, 10:49 AM yup, the gomen got 30% of the land reclaimed, but the question is why the rclaimation is done by a small unknown company whose only knew how to built shoplot nd teresse housing?, at least in penang there, the reclaimation work in penang is done by IJM and E&O

achkeen10 September 14th, 2008, 10:17 AM Penambahan 400 Meter Di LTBB
PM SETUJU TAMBAH PERUNTUKAN RM40 JUTA

rizalhakim September 18th, 2008, 05:45 AM RM300m specialist hospital for Malacca
MALACCA: Work on a proposed RM300mil private specialist hospital in Klebang is set to begin by December and completed in three years.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the company involved had briefed the state on development plans which would be submitted to the city council’s one-stop centre for approval next week.
The 300-bed hospital will be known as Straits of Melaka Specialist Centre and be served by 70 specialists, he said after presenting aid to 40 widows of policemen at the Police Contingent Headquarters in Bukit Beruang recently.
Mohd Ali said that all Barisan Nasional assemblymen and senators would adopt factories to foster closer rapport between the state and investors.
The factories would be listed and assigned to their respective bapa angkat, he said, adding that the assemblymen and senators would be required to periodically visit them.
He said the move would help the state get feedback from investors and workers to address technical and manpower issues.

nazrey October 8th, 2008, 04:33 AM Malacca aims to take back stalled reclamation project
Wednesday October 8, 2008
TheStar
MALACCA: The state plans to obtain a court order to seize the Pulau Melaka project from the company that was appointed to revive the stalled multi-million ringgit reclamation project.
State housing, rural development and project revival committee chairman Datuk Ghafar Atan said legal proceedings had been initiated against the company as it had failed to settle the land premium despite being given ample time to do so.
Speaking to reporters after a key presentation ceremony to homeowners at Taman Saujana Bukit Katil here recently, Ghafar assured buyers of the Pulau Melaka project that their interests would be safeguarded.
The RM1.4bil project, launched in 1996, involved mixed development on two man-made islands off the Bandar Hilir coast.
Although recording over RM190mil in sales, only one 45ha island was reclaimed and partially developed before the project stalled.
Earlier this year, the project was revived by court-appointed receivers with Phase I, Phase II and Phase III targeted for completion within 18 months.
Ghafar confirmed that 521 out of 612 four-storey shoplots had been sold under Phase I while 589 of 762 similar units and 85 apartments were sold under Phase II.
Phase I and Phase II were 90% and 85% completed respectively while the apartments under Phase III were completed, he said, adding that the apartments could not be occupied as the developers have yet to complete the plumbing and sewerage works.

daeng_jal October 12th, 2008, 07:02 PM Sentral: MITC bakal jadi kota fesyen
Oleh Badrul Hizar Ab Jabar
bhnews@bharian.com.my
Projek RM40 juta babitkan 173 unit rumah kedai dua tingkat jangka siap Disember
Hadir sama, Datuk Bandar Melaka Bersejarah, Yusof Jantan dan Pengarah Urusan Pembinaan Rembang Kota Sdn Bhd, Yee Ying Sung selaku pemaju projek.

Eye on Malaysia moves to Malacca
MALACCA: The Eye on Malaysia (EOM) will be permanently placed at the Sungai Melaka river mouth, facing the Straits of Malacca.
EOM Sdn Bhd (EOMSB) chief executive officer Adam Yong Abdullah said the 60-metre tall portable Ferris wheel would be ready for testing by Saturday.
"Tentatively, we have fixed Nov 7 for the launch of the EOM here.
"The launch is expected to be done by the Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob and the EOM would be opened to the public the next day."
He said that ticket price for Malaysians and foreigners would be different, and that Malaysian adults who produced MyKad would be charged RM10, RM8 for children above 12 and RM5 for children below 12.
Malaysian senior citizens and students from local private and public institutions of higher learning will be charged RM8. For foreigners, tickets are priced at RM20 (adults) and RM10 (children).
The wheel comprises 42 gondolas and allows visitors to experience a 360-degree panoramic view of the Historical City and the Straits of Malacca.
"We are expecting between 700,000 and 750,000 visitors to ride the EOM annually."
Adam said the company would build two other attractions at the Sungai Melaka river mouth.
"We plan to open the Light and Sound Water Screen at the Straits of Malacca in December and a Space Exhibition Centre in February."
It took seven weeks and RM1 million to relocate the EOM from Taman Tasik Titiwangsa to Malacca.

rizalhakim October 15th, 2008, 04:20 AM Textile hub in Ayer Keroh
MALACCA: The RM40mil Kota Gemilang project in Ayer Keroh is set to become the state’s premier textile hub following its opening early next year.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the project would be part of the Hang Tuah Jaya Fashion City at the Malacca International Trade Centre. Kota Gemilang will have 173 units of double storey shop lots, he told reporters here recently.
He said that the textile hub would offer a wide range of products including home furnishing items to attract shoppers, comprising both locals and tourists alike.
He noted the response for the units have been overwhelming with 60% of non-bumiputra lots snapped up with another 40% lots remaining for bumiputras.
He said the state, via the Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI), would help local bumiputra entrepreneurs, who are keen to develop the textile industry or home furnishing businesses here.
Meanwhile, project developer Pembinaan Rembang Kotas managing director Yee Ying Sung said that 80% of the project was completed with only finishing touches remaining.
He added that 60% of the shoplots here would deal in textile goods while the remaining 40% would comprise furniture shops and restaurants.
The Malacca Hang Tuah Jaya Fashion City would adopt a similar concept like the one in Nilai where most of the textile operators were gathered in one location, he said, adding that the area would have 300 parking lots for cars and 100 lots for buses.

Eye On Malaysia to be launched on November 7
BANDA HILIR - The Eye On Malaysia which is now being installed here is almost 90 percent completed and is expected to be officially launched on November 7.
Although its opening was originally scheduled for 18 October, the date has to be postponed to next month due to some unforeseen circumstances.
Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd's Chief Executive Officer, Adam Yong Abdullah said apart from the Eye on Malaysia, works on the other attractions including the light and sound show are also progressing well.
He said the facilities for the light and sound show are expected to be completed by the end of December while the space exhibition and food & beverage outlets will be completed by the end of February.
"The works to install the Eye On Malaysia is almost 90 percent completed while works on the other attraction are currently 75 percent completed. We have spent some RM1 million to relocate the eye to Melaka and works to dismantle and erecting it here will take between six and seven weeks.
"Apart from the existing attractions, we will also look at the possibility of adding more attractions from time to time. This is vital as in the theme park industry new attractions must be added from time to time to sustain public interest," he added.
He told reporters this during a Press conference at the site of the Eye On Malaysia near the estuary of the Melaka River here on Monday.
When asked about the competition from the existing Eye On Melaka which is currently situated in Jalan Tun Ali, Adam Yong said, he does not foresee any problems from the exisiting ride.
He said both products cater to different segment of people and apart from that, the existing market share is large.
"I was informed that tourist arrival in Melaka is expected to increase to 7 million and this will continue to increase over the years. This will contribute to a larger marker share and as such, will not affect our Eye On Malaysia," he added.
Standing at 60 meters, the Eye On Malaysia is equipped with 42 air conditioned gondolas, including a VIP gondola and two for the disabled.

rizalhakim October 20th, 2008, 07:34 AM RM30 juta baik pulih, bina lagun Pantai Puteri
Oleh NORIZAN ABDUL MUHID
MELAKA 19 Okt.
Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Kawasan Pantai Kundor, Datuk Ab. Rahaman Ab.

'Duck Tour' makes waves in city
By : Jason Gerald John, New Straits Time
Visitors getting off the ‘Duck Tour’ vessel in Malacca.
MALACCA: Come December, tourists to the historical city can "quack" their way around town with a combination of city, harbour and island tour without the bother of switching the craft they are on.
Visitors would be taken on the "Duck Tour", using an amphibious vessel which can travel on land, the Straits of Malacca and Sungai Melaka.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam described the tour as being the first in the country.
"Everything began here and now we have another innovative tourist attraction which would place the state in a league of its own in terms of tourism," he said after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the state government and the "Duck Tour" operator, Duck Ventures Sdn Bhd, at Seri Negeri here yesterday.
According to Ali, the fun begins as soon as one boards the "Duck", an authentic, reconditioned World War 2 amphibious vehicle, known to the military as DUKW.
"First, you'll be greeted by the ConDUCKtors, who'll be narrating your tour. Then, you'll cruise by all the places in the historical city, from A Famosa to other sites.
"And just when you think you've seen it all, visitors will experience the "Splashdown" as your ConDUCKtor splashes your Duck right into the Straits of Malacca, before embarking on a journey to Pulau Besar and back to the jetty at Sungai Melaka," he said.
On the way to Pulau Besar, tourists will be able to see places such as the Portuguese Settlement and also cruise along the longest and busiest strait in the world.
The Duck Tours will be available daily from 9.30am to 6pm and special night tours from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in three months' time.
The tour will take 60 minutes, depending on traffic and weather conditions, and tickets are priced at RM38 for adults and RM22 for children, aged between 3 and 12.
Students will be given a special rate of RM28, while family packages for two adults and two children are available for RM100.
A full "Duck" charter, accommodating 38 people, is also available for RM1,500.

Riding high: The unit's mounted patrol has helped boost its image.
With the increase, the unit will be divided into two wings, he said, adding that one wing would be responsible for investigations while the other would focus on crime prevention.
“This will be convenient for tourists as their reports will be handled immediately by the unit’s investigating officers instead of being forwarded to the district police station for further action,” he said.
Established in June 1985, the Tourist Police Unit has come a long way since its humble beginnings with a handful of foot patrol personnel.
Today, the unit is housed in the heart of the old city in a restored 19th-century building next to Malacca River along Jalan Laksamana.
It boasts five horses for mounted patrol duties and six personnel doing rounds on bicycles.

Doubling up: Officers of the state's Tourist Police Unit providing information to tourists.
The unit has an all-women pocoh-pocoh line-dance group that has performed at public gatherings on several occasions.
The inclusion of smartly-dressed officers patrolling on horseback, bicycling through the narrow city streets or performing line-dancing has boosted the unit’s image.
Domestic and foreign tourist arrivals is expected to see a sharp rise following the historic city’s inscription as a World Heritage Site in July.
A further rise in arrivals is expected when the extended Batu Berendam Airport begins operations as a low-cost carrier hub for the southern region by early next year.
In 2007, slightly more than six million tourists visited the state and the number is expected to rise to 6.5 million this year and eight million in 2010.
On the upgrading of the unit’s capabilities, Datuk Mazlan said the officers concerned would be taught how to carry themselves with the utmost professionalism, dedication and integrity while on duty.
In this respect, he said the officers must be pleasant in nature and conversant in other languages as they double-up as tourist guides by providing information to visitors.
He said the Melaka Tengah district police station served as the command centre for 50 CCTV cameras set up at strategic locations throughout the city by Malacca Historic City Council.

achkeen10 October 23rd, 2008, 06:18 AM Kewujudan 'City Campus' UiTM dan UTeM
MELAKA PELOPORI USAHA BINA BANDAR PENDIDIKAN

KUALA LINGGI- The Melaka State Government has offered a contract to KJ Waja Engineering (M) Sdn bhd, a shipping engineering company to build a roll on/roll off (ro-ro) ferry to ply the route between Kuala Linggi in Melaka to Dumai in Sumatra, Indonesia.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said that the service was among the issues discussed during the last Indonesia-Malaysia -Thailand Growth Triangle meeting.
"Riau Governor Muhammad Rusli Zainal often asks
when the ro-ro facility in Melaka will be completed as the same facility is being built in Dumai," said Mohd Ali after launching the company's ship dock in Kuala Linggi recently.
Mohd Ali hoped the ro-ro facility could operate next year to allow Malaysians to visit Sumatra and vice-versa and bring along heir vehicles too.

rizalhakim October 24th, 2008, 08:08 AM Melaka maju 2010
http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/pix/2008/1011/Kosmo/Rekreasi/re_02.1.jpg
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MOHD.
Ali Rustam dan Pengerusi MOST, Datuk Ab. Rahaman Ab. Karim.

JASIN: The Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry has agreed to set up a permanent exhibition centre to display products that are produced under the Satu Daerah Satu Industri (SDSI or One District One Industry) programme.
Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said a few shop houses at Melaka Raya and Bandar Hilir had been chosen for the purpose.
Speaking to reporters after opening the rebranding of the Giatmara centres in Malacca, he said the opening of the SDSI centre would provide a venue for its entrepreneurs nationwide to display and promote their products.
This year’s SDSI exhibition, to be held for three days beginning Friday at the Malacca International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, would be opened by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Earlier in his speech, Mohd Ali urged Giatmara to produce more skilled workers as they were highly demanded in various sectors.
The rebranding of the Giatmara centre involved the Sungai Rambai branch which is now known as Jasin Giatmara.
Selandar’s centre will be known as Alor Gajah Giatmara while Alor Gajah’s will be renamed as Simpang Ampat Giatmara. — Bernama

Bina Muzium Di Pulau Besar

MELAKA 12 Nov. - Kerajaan negeri kini mengambil alih keseluruhan projek pembangunan di Pulau Melaka, Bandar Hilir di sini selepas pemilikan tanah projek terbengkalai sejak sekian lama dilupuskan.
Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd.

Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd. Ali Rustam berkata, sejak dirasmikan 7 November lalu, Eye On Malaysia berjaya menghasilkan kutipan antara RM17,000 hingga RM34,000 sehari.

Katanya, sayap pelaburan kerajaan negeri, Chief Minister Inc diberi tanggungjawab mengambil alih sekali gus meneruskan projek berkenaan.

nazrey November 17th, 2008, 12:40 AM Big clean-up at Pantai Kamunting, Malacca
Monday November 17, 2008
MALACCA: Staff of Holiday Inn Melaka helped clean Pantai Kamunting in Tanjung Bidara in conjunction with the global Clean Up The World Campaign recently.
The event kicked off at 8am when more than 50 staff members turned up at Pantai Kamunting where they spent the entire morning picking up litter washed ashore or left behind by irresponsible picnickers.
Holiday Inn Melaka general manager Christoph Voegeli said the move was to keep the state’s natural landmarks clean while educating the public on the importance of preserving the environment.
“We hope that irresponsible people will stop dumping rubbish, especially plastic bags and non-biodegradable items, on the beach or in the water.
“Marine animals choke to death when they eat floating plastic materials,” he said.
He said an assortment of rubbish such as glass bottles, balloons, cigarette boxes, shoes, styrofoam boxes and plastic bags were collected during the five-hour campaign.
“We hope the public will appreciate Mother Nature more and understand the urgent need to protect the environment for future generations,” he said, adding that Pantai Kamunting was a well-known place for turtle landings.
It is home to a hawksbill turtle hatchery and sanctuary and records among the highest landings of the endangered turtle, with over 300 nests annually.
The Clean Up The World campaign also received the support of Malacca Tourism’s promotion division, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Alor Gajah Municipal Council, Alor Gajah District and Land Office and Malacca State Chalets Organisation.
rizalhakim November 18th, 2008, 06:12 AM Malacca to revive RM1.4b reclaimed island scheme
By CHEN PELF YEEN
MALACCA: The state government has seized the RM1.4bil Pulau Melaka reclaimed island project from its receivers following their failure to settle land premiums despite being given ample time to do so.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the state would revive the stalled project to protect the interests of the 1,200 purchasers.
“We are calling for a meeting in December with the purchasers and the banks that had provided the loans to them.
“The state is looking at ways to revive the project,” he told reporters here after chairing the state executive council meeting recently.
He said the meeting would determine if there was any balance from the bank loans that could be used to complete the project.
He said, from Dec 1, the entry to Pulau Melaka would be controlled by the state instead of the developers to facilitate those wishing to perform prayers at the RM10mil Masjid Selat Melaka built on the island in Nov 2006.
Mohd Ali also said that Chief Minister Incorporated would construct a rest and recreation centre, including restaurants, on a portion of the island reserved as state land.
The RM1.4bil project, launched in 1996, involved mixed developments on two man-made islands off the Bandar Hilir coast.
Earlier this year, the project was revived by court-appointed receivers with Phase I, Phase II and Phase III targeted for completion within 18 months.
A total of 521 of 612 four-storey shoplots were sold under Phase I while 589 of 762 similar units and 85 apartments were sold under Phase II.
Phase I and Phase II were 90% and 85% completed respectively while apartments under Phase III were completed, he said, adding that the apartments could not be occupied as the developers were yet to complete plumbing and sewerage works.

teckkang November 19th, 2008, 09:18 AM Melaka `Syurga' Pelancong
Hampir Tembusi Sasaran 6.8 Juta Pelancong Tahun Ini

Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd.

IT WAS a night to remember for more than 10,000 people at the historic launch of the Eye On Malaysia at the Malacca rivermouth recently despite the threat of a storm.
It was a highly-charged affair with “oohs and aahs” when the 60m ferris wheel made its first spin at about 9.30pm following its launch by Malacca Governor Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob.
Many stood in line to catch a ride provided free until 3am.
Among the lucky ones were 400 orphans from Lembaga Pengurusan dan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Miskin, Rumah Budak Laki-Laki Tun Abdul Aziz, Rumah Tunas Harapan Semarak Kasih, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Daerah Jasin, Kompleks Rumah Anak Yatim Fatimah Az Zahrah and Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj.
Many walked away spellbound by viewing the city’s lights from 60m, with some vowing to return for a sunset spin.
Others stayed for a two-hour ceremony to watch a fireworks display and dazzling performances by local stars Ning Baizura and Mawi.
Ferris wheel operator Ad Suria Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Adam Yong Abdullah said the Eye On Malaysia would be the main attraction on the 1.6ha leisure park.
It would have three attractions, the first being the Eye On Malaysia. A 30m by 60m water screen would be ready by December and a 4D space exhibition by February next year, he said.
He said the water screen, currently named the Strange World Screen and tipped to be the largest in the region, would display scenes of Malacca’s landmarks, and the space exhibition would give patrons a feel of outer space.
The park would include two world-class restaurants – the Eye Cafe and Eye Seafood Restaurant, Yong added.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said he hoped the RM50mil project would attract more tourists to Malacca.
“I believe, with the Eye On Malaysia, we will draw enough visitors to reach our target of 6.8 million tourists by year’s end,” he told reporters at a press conference after the launch.
He said the ferris wheel was expected to attract 3,000 visitors each weekend and 700,000 visitors a year, particular tourists from neighbouring countries.
He said the state would construct an access road to the Eye to prevent jams on roads leading to the site.
A coastal road from the Kota Laksamana interchange was expected to be completed in two months, he said, adding that visitors need not use the route that cuts through the Kota Laksamana residential area.
He said the state was considering a canopy walk suspension bridge to enable visitors to walk to the Eye from the other side of the river to ease traffic jams.
The bridge would be an attraction by itself, he added.
Ticket prices for MyKad holders range from RM5 to RM10 and RM10 to RM20 for foreigners. Those who want a longer ride can opt for a private gondola (up to eight people) at RM100 or a VVIP gondola (up to four people) at RM200.
Among those present at the launch were Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Datuk Noh Omar, his Deputy Datuk Saiffuddin Abdullah, Malacca Historic City Council mayor Yusof Jantan and State Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Seet Har Cheow.

MALACCA: The road systems in Malacca, Negri Sembilan and Johor will be improved over the next two years with an allocation of RM3.2 billion.
Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said it included a RM220 million upgrading of Jalan Tangkak-Segamat and a RM85 million traffic dispersal system in Seremban known as Seremban Middle Ring Road.
In Malacca, he said, the ministry would embark on a study on a traffic dispersal system to ease traffic congestion from the Ayer Keroh toll plaza to the city centre.
"The influx of tourists into the state, which was recently named as a Unesco World Heritage Site, is causing traffic snarl in the city centre, especially along the routes to tourist destinations such as A'Famosa, Stadhuys, Jonker Walk, Eye on Malaysia and Menara Taming Sari.
"I was made to understand that at times, the congestion lasts for more than an hour. This problem was raised by the state government and we will undertake a study on an effective traffic dispersal system."
Zin said the roads leading into the city centre needed a few flyovers at certain interchanges to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
"We cannot change things overnight. We need about a year for the study to be completed as the roads in the city are narrow and buildings on both sides of the roads make our work to implement an effective traffic dispersal system an uphill task."
He was speaking after opening a session to explain the compensation for variation of price (VOP) list and building using the industrialised building system at a hotel here yesterday.
Zin said the materials that came under VOP included steel, cement, bitumen, premix, sand, gravel, guardrail, fabric reinforcement, copper, water and sewerage pipes, diesel and petrol.
On the upgrading of Jalan Tangkak-Segamat in Johor, Zin said the project would see the road being upgraded to a dual carriageway on each direction for about 60km
"This project will create a new corridor in the north of Johor and provide better access for people in the centre of Johor to visit coastal areas in the east."
He later visited the site of the Jalan Batu Berendan-Durian Tunggal upgrading project.
The project is expected to be completed in March.

daeng_jal November 27th, 2008, 06:34 PM it amazing when all car lead to the city. the trafic jams occur on the road leading to the city centre.but the city centre itself the trafic flow is saturated but smooth.it is prove that the one way, circulartory road system really does work.so i think rather than building more flyover, more road and wider road is just a waste of money and does not work.just look at the flyover and trafic light infested city of KL.the circular system is good for driver as we need not to stop but to the pedestrian too as car are driven slower.unlike the F1 of KL street that make any crosing maybe your last.so for me,just expanded the circulartory system to other area and use the excess money to build the EDT and commuter train.it just had 30km to go.and to permit MKZ-Sg flight.these will reduce the car entering the state significantly.

shopping mall? is it a real shopping mall like Mahkota parade or like a hypermarket only??
Melaka has more than enough shopping malls. Only the tenants should have more variety. Maybe Melaka needs a lifestyle shopping mall.....hopefully AEON Melaka would be the one since Dataran Pahlawan isnt really lifestyle...design of the mall is like a market....small pathway, low ceiling.
i saw land clearing at cheng where Tesco Extra supposed to open....should be ready by 2010. Besides, I heard Mydin mall at mitc is opening next month rushing for CNY maybe.

IPOH: Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea and Japan are among the emerging markets for Malacca's tourism industry, adding to the list that already includes Singapore, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.

Melaka Adds More Products To Attract Tourists
KOTA BAHARU (Malaysia), Dec 13 (Bernama) -- Southern state of Melaka will create several new tourism products to attract more local and foreign tourists to the state, starting next year.
Melaka Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam said among the new tourism products to be introduced by the state are a water them park, the world's largest television water screen, monorail, the tram and cable car, all built in Melaka town.
"These new tourist attractions are possible with the cooperation of private companies that are also interested in attracting more tourists from the country and abroad.
"Melaka's World Heritage status given by Unesco will also give an opportunity for Malaysia and Melaka to be introduced to the world," he told reporters after the "Jom Ke Melaka" Tourism Promotion Launching Ceremony, here Friday. Mohd Ali said the state government will ensure that these attractions last as they were strong pull factors for tourists.
He added they targeted 8.2 million tourists in the state by 2010, with a total revenue of RM5.6 billion. (US$1=RM3.62).
Meanwhile, the Melaka government retracted its directive which banned all employees of state government departments and agencies from official visits to Kelantan.
Mohd Ali said it was done following satisfaction on PAS leaders' attitude who no longer labeled United Malays National Organisation (Umno), which is leading the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, leaders and members as infidels.
"As of today (Friday), all state government agencies can hold official visits to Kelantan without any problems as there are no more statements saying Umno members and leaders are infidels," he said.

rizalhakim December 18th, 2008, 06:41 AM Jumlah pelancong Melaka melebihi sasaran
MELAKA 17 Dis. - Jumlah pelancong yang mengunjungi negeri ini sepanjang tahun 2008 dijangka melebihi sasaran awal iaitu seramai 6.8 juta orang.
Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd.

achkeen10 December 20th, 2008, 03:09 AM Kerajaan Negeri Minta Bajet Tambahan
LTBB Berupaya Menjana Pulangan RM1 Bilion Setahun

rizalhakim December 20th, 2008, 04:54 AM Malacca gets another RM62m to extend airport
MALACCA: The Federal Government has agreed to the state’s request for an additional RM62mil to extend the Batu Berendam Airport runway so it can handle larger planes.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the approval by the Economic Planning Unit would help attract 1.35 million tourists to the state and would generate RM1bil for the local economy.
Extending the runway by another 385m to 2.135km would enable a fully loaded Airbus A-320 or Boeing 737 to land, he told reporters after a closed-door briefing on the ongoing project at Seri Bendahara yesterday.
Mohd Ali added that state chalked up the highest number of health tourist arrivals in the country last year, with over 60,000 seeking treatment here.
The current RM131mil extension project would only result in a 1.8km runway when completed by the end of this month.

rizalhakim December 22nd, 2008, 07:43 AM Malacca state engages in aggressive promotions to attract tourists
By MARTIN CARVALHO
MALACCA: Despite the recent global economic downturn, the state is confident of being able to achieve its 6.8mil tourist target set for the year.
This was due to a rise in domestic tourist arrivals and visitors from Singapore, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said.
Mohd Ali said that some 5.85mil overnight tourists had visited the state between Jan and Nov this year. “Domestic tourists made up the bulk of the numbers with 4.83mil visitors while foreign tourists accounted for some 1.02mil,” he said recently.
Promoting Malacca: Mohd Ali (second left) at the Singapore roadshow. Also present during launching of the roadshow is Singapore’s foreign affair minister Zainol Abidin Rasheed (left).
He added that Singaporeans made up 19.3 % of foreign tourists followed by China (17%) and Indonesia (9.4%) , Honk Kong (4.4%) and Saudi Arabia (4.3%).
He said that aggressive promotions and road shows including new attractions such as the Eye on Malaysia and Malacca River boat cruises were among the factors that would assist in the state maintaining its high number of tourists arrivals.
“We have also carried out several tourism road shows in conjunction with the recent school holidays here and in Singapore to better tap the domestic tourist market,” he said.
Since the start of the two-month school break, the state has gone on road shows to promote Malacca in Ipoh, Terengganu, Kota Baru including Singapore and Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Mohd Ali said that Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and Korea were potential markets being looked at as some 46,700 tourist from these countries had visited the state last year.
rizalhakim December 22nd, 2008, 08:24 AM Zoo Melaka pikat pengunjung
Oleh NORIZAN ABDUL MUHID
MELAKA 21 Dis.
rizalhakim December 22nd, 2008, 08:26 AM Produk pelancongan baru
MELAKA 21 Dis.
rizalhakim December 24th, 2008, 05:06 AM Lebih 10,000 pelancong lawat Pengkalan Batu
MELAKA 23 Dis.
rizalhakim December 24th, 2008, 05:12 AM Pembinaan jambatan Selat Melaka perlu kajian rapi
MELAKA 23 Dis.
rizalhakim December 24th, 2008, 05:21 AM Syor jambatan Melaka-Dumai perlu dikaji

rizalhakim December 30th, 2008, 08:43 AM Malacca: City of lights
Story and pictures by CHEN PELF YEEN
http://archives.thestar.com.my/archives/2008/12/25/southneast/se_01lights.jpg
WITH the Unesco World Heritage Site status under its belt, Malacca is now fast earning the tage ‘City Of Lights’.
The tag is for obvious reasons as anyone who takes a slow drive around the city or a 4km riverboat cruise down the Malacca River just when the sun begins to set would be enchanted by the myriad of illumination at various parts of the city.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/12/25/southneast/se_04mosque.jpg
Majestic: The Straits Mosque (Masjid Selat) in Pulau Melaka decorated with colourful lights in the evening.
For many locals and tourists alike, the sight of city’s landmarks and historical monuments bathed in reddish hue lights with trees lined with rice light bulbs is a sight to behold.
Popular locations such as the 17th Century Dutch Stadhuys Complex area, Jonker and Heeren Street and the city’s older quarter along parts of the recently rehabilitated and beautified Malacca River are among the brightly lit landmarks.
The idea to light up the city is in line with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustams vision of creating a brighter and more cheerful looking state and city to promote it as the ideal tourist destination.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/12/25/southneast/se_04chameleon.jpg
Chameleon: Besides buildings, some giant trees in Ayer Keroh are also decorated with chasing lights that changes colours every few seconds at night.
“A city that is brightly lit gives it a more cheerful appearance. This can be seen in most major cities around the world that are well-known tourist destinations,” he said, adding that Paris and Singa*pore are such good examples.
He also said the effort is in line with the state’s vision of achieving a developed status by 2010.
“Up to 2008, some 87,946 street lamps have been erected across the state, making it one of the most lighted up states in the country.
“We estimate that by 2010, there will be 91,946 street lamps throughout the state. We are not only brightening up the city but also the villages in the outskirts.”
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/12/25/southneast/se_04jonker.jpg
Famous street: The Jonker Street is decorated with red lights at night.
However, this feat comes with a price with the Malacca Historic City Council having to shoulder the bulk of Tenaga Nasional Berhads monthly electricity bill.
Mayor Yusof Jantan said the council pays up to RM800,000 each month or a whopping RM8.4mil per year to light up the city with decorative and street lights.
Despite this, Yusof said that there are plans to further light up strategic locations both within and in the outer limits of the city under the councils Bersih dan Indah slogan.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/12/25/southneast/se_04wheel.jpg
Bright eyes: The 60m Eye on Malaysia situated next to the Malacca River mouth is also decorated with stunning lights at night.
“One of the locations being looked into is several large trees along the main road next to the World Youth Foundation about 1.5km from the Ayer Keroh toll.
“We have decorated one of the trees with lights and feedback has been very positive so far, he said, adding that effort by the city council to light up the city further depends largely on the availability of budget.
“It takes about RM80,000 to purchase and install the necessary types of lighting for a particular area and this does not include having to pay TNB monthly electricity bills,” he said.
Though the primary aim of lighting up the city maybe for aesthetic reason, he said that there is a dual purpose behind it.
“Besides promoting tourism, better lit streets and roads in the city helps prevent crime,” he said, adding that a study conducted showed that a well-lit area can help reduce crime by 30%.
rizalhakim December 31st, 2008, 04:08 AM Malacca seeks federal aid to build coastal road
Malacca: The Malacca government has asked the federal government to build a coastal road in the state to overcome traffic congestion in the city.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the coastal road would enable road users headed north or south to avoid city roads.
“At present, particularly during public holidays and weekends, the city roads are congested with vehicles bearing local and foreign tourists,” he told reporters after participating in a jogging programme at Bandar Hilir last Sunday.
Mohd Ali was asked to comment on the severe traffic congestion in Bandar Hilir, Padang Temu and Ujong Pasir last Saturday when more than 10,000 people attended the national Christmas open house at the Portuguese Settlement here.
He said that between Dec 1 and 23, some 559,423 vehicles had entered Melaka via the three toll plazas of the Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (Plus) at Simpang Ampat, Ayer Keroh and Jasin.
“Of the three toll plazas, the Ayer Keroh plaza registered the highest number of cars entering the state, at 371, 519, and on the average 22,000 vehicles entered through the three toll plazas every day,” he said.
Mohd Ali said eight million tourists were expected to visit Melaka next year compared to the 6.8 million this year.

MALACCA: The state’s 20 mil planetarium project at the Malacca International Trade Centre (MITC) is set to be one of the main attractions here following its opening July this year.
The planetarium is being built on the 4ha roundabout located at the MITC in Ayer Keroh.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the planetarium will house a 15m internal dome including a 250 capacity theatre and will be equipped with the latest digitally operated equipment in the country.
“The equipment will be brought in by March and the planetarium is scheduled to open to public by July 1,” he told reporters during a visit to the planetarium recently.

Let's get moving: Mohd Ali Rustam (second from right) and Department of K-Economy director Azuddin Jud ismail (right) at the project site in Ayer Keroh.
The planetarium is located in the heart of the MITC growth area near several other ongoing projects such as a centre to develop animation and a ICT data centre that includes a 52-lane bowling centre.
He said the planetarium would also allow researchers from various higher institutions to conduct their experiments here besides attracting locals and tourists who are keen to learn more about the beauty and secrets of the universe.
There are currently three planetariums in Peninsular Malaysia, namely the National Planetarium in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu Planetarium located at the foothill of Bukit Besar and the RM20mil Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex in Tanjung Bidara, Malacca.
Mohd Ali said the planetarium was scheduled for completion soon with contractors requiring 90-days to set up the equipment once it arrives in March.
teckkang January 1st, 2009, 11:06 AM State welcomes public feedback
MALACCA: The state, welcomes public feedback on its plan to implement a special heritage management plan to further main tain and protect the city’s status as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said that the special area plan (RKK) Conservation Area Management Plan of Malacca Historical City would be aimed at effective management, control and conservation of sites and buildings located within the state’s heritage core zone.
An exhibition featuring the special area plan is on display at the city council’s Graha Makmur lobby, state town planning department, Dataran Pahlawan mega mall, Kampung Morten, Kampung Portugis and Kampung Chetty until Jan 19.
“I hope the exhibition attracts members of the public, especially heritage conservationists and Malaccans to come forward and participate in the exhibition,” he said this in his speech text presented on his behalf by state Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Latiff Tamby Chik here recently.
The exhibition is aimed at giving the public better understanding of the plan and a chance to voice their opinions, objections and comments before the plan is confirmed.
“The plan will allow Malaccans to play a role in helping to shape the atmosphere of the city in the core zones,” he said, adding that the RKK would ensure that the city’s heritage area will be protected in years to come.
He also said that the exhibition served to promote Malacca’s image as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Malacca and George Town were inscribed under Unesco’s World Heritage Sites (WHS) on July 7.

IRB chief executive and director-general Datuk Hasmah Abdullah said the campuses were needed as the academy’s main campus in Bangi, Selangor, could no longer accommodate the increasing number of staff and officers who needed to be trained.
“Opening up branch campuses will help us achieve our vision of becoming a tax administrator of international standards by allowing us to continue pro*ducing highly-trained and skilled staff,” she said at theground-breaking ceremony for the campus at Jalan Tabuan here on Friday.

daeng_jal January 3rd, 2009, 02:59 PM Penubuhan DMDI Finance House
MELAKA LABUR ASET BERNILAI RM10 JUTA

daeng_jal January 4th, 2009, 12:29 PM Sime Darby promises to fulfil social obligations at IJN
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 — Conglomerate Sime Darby Bhd, which yesterday received the nod in principle from the government to acquire a 51 per cent stake in the National Heart Institute's (IJN) holding company, has pledged to continue the heart specialist centre's social obligation to low-income earners.
Its president and group chief executive Datuk Seri Ahmad Zubir Murshid said that was one of the conditions the Sime Darby board members themselves had insisted on before the group proposed the acquisition to the government.
The heart institute's holding company, IJN Holdings Sdn Bhd, incorporated in 2005, is wholly-owned by the Finance Ministry.
He said the government stipulated three conditions in its response to the proposal, namely, the value of the proposed acquisition, the group's business plan for IJN and the group's commitment to continue the social obligation as being provided by the Health Ministry currently.
"When we expressed our intention, the government had asked us about the people.
"We will continue the commitment to the people, to the middle and low-income group. Sime will continue to fulfil the obligation," he told a media briefing.
He shrugged off suggestions that the social obligation would get in the way of its revenue.
"Part of the IJN is for the people, but there is also part of it that looks at the full-paying patients," he noted.
He explained that it would look at how best to enhance business for IJN's almost completed new wing, saying that subsidised patients would also be given treatment at the new wing proportionately.
Describing the proposal as a "win-win" situation, Zubir said it would allow Sime Darby to better synergise IJN and the group's existing healthcare centre, Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC), in terms of expertise and technology.
"If required, we can send patients to SJMC too. By the way, SJMC does its corporate social responsibility on its side too. And if there is lack of operation theatres and doctors, we can rotate between the two hospitals," he said.
Expecting the business plan to be ready in about five months, Zubir said Sime Darby would also retain whatever charges IJN was committed to at present.
He however did not disclose the value of the 51 per cent stake but said it would pay in cash to the government.
He also noted that it would not be a full takeover but a partnership and did not think there would be a revamp of management and staff.
"But first I will have to meet with Datuk Mohd Radzif Mohd Yunus (IJN Holdings Sdn Bhd chief executive officer). And then we have to see the staff and discuss with the management," he said.
"At the moment, there is no detailed plan. We have to go in and do due diligence," he said.
Asked if the doctors at IJN could expect better salary with this acquisition, Zubir said: "Yes, but we also don't know how much they are getting paid now."
To a question on whether the acquisition would be fair to Sime Darby's shareholders, Zubir said they would get their value.
He said this was a golden opportunity for the group as the acquisition would enhance Sime Darby's expanding healthcare division and would attract more doctors and specialists.
"We felt that going into a brownfield was the best option. If we are going to start new, the reputation and branding would take some time. IJN already has those and we can bring in more doctors," he said.
Zubir said the bigger picture was to look at the existing specialist centres.
"But if there is none, we will set up our own. That is part and parcel of our strategy as what we have at SJMC is limited," he said.
Zubir explained that Sime Darby was looking to develop an integrated city in Labu, Negri Sembilan, with five different townships that would cater to education, health, sports, high technology, recreation and entertainment.
Thus, replicating IJN there would fit in perfectly with the proposed medical city, especially with plans to have training centres and hospitals for nurses and doctors, he said.
"We are not going to disturb the operations of the old IJN but would replicate it as a centre of excellence in the proposed medical city. With another IJN in Labu, people will associate with it instantly.
"We are also scanning for other health centres like treatment for cancer to be there. But if there is none, we will build it," he said.
He said it was also looking to expand its healthcare division to Penang and Malacca in addition to the 300-bed hospital at Desa Park City here.
Zubir said the group was also in talks with a few hospitals in the region but they were still in the preliminary stage.
"We are also looking at growing regionally and this is where we are looking to enhance our value. IJN also trains doctors around the region and we are looking at Indonesia, Thailand and China as part of our healthcare strategy," he added. — Bernama
rizalhakim January 7th, 2009, 05:07 AM AEON to open two Jusco stores
Published: 2009/01/07
AEON Co (M) Bhd, which operates the Jusco department store chain, expects to open two retail stores this year.
Its general manager of the corporate affairs division, A. Rashid Adam, said one of the new stores will be located in Malacca and the other in Cheras in the Klang Valley.
There are now 26 Jusco stores, all located on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
“We will continue with our strategy of capturing strong market share in the retail industry through our J-Card loyalty programme which provides discount price privileges and gift redemptions,” Rashid said during a prize-giving ceremony for outstanding employees at the Setiawangsa Jusco store yesterday.
Consumers are expected to be cautious in spending this year but Jusco is confident of generating strong sales through attractive sales promotions and its J-card loyalty campaign, he said.
Stating that 2009 will be a challenging year for retail operators due to the economic conditions, Rashid said the company remains confident of at least maintaining last year’s sales with its strong branding.
“Due to the economic downturn, spending especially on electrical products and apparels has slowed down. However, the spending on food items has remained relatively unchanged,” he said. - Bernama
