Manila, Makati City and Quezon City are just three of the eight or so component cities that make up the Philippines' National Capital Region called Metro Manila.

The pace of urban development in Metro Manila has been so frenetic the past few years that some areas in the outlying provinces have been annexed into it.

Manila (and the Metro areas) is not in the least bit "unknown." Manila is one of the major world capitals in Asia. :)

By "unknown", I think he meant Makati because this component city of Metro Manila is indeed not familiar to many people outside of the Philippines.

pau_p1

yup... Makati city is a component city of the Nat'l Capital Region which is adjacent to the Philippine capital, Manila. The National Capital Region (NCR) or Metro Manila is composed of the following cities....

Manila - the Capital City
Quezon City - the old capital city and the largest city in NCR
Makati City - the financial district
Pasig City
Mandaluyong City
Pasay City
Paranaque City
Muntinlupa City
Taguig City
Caloocan City
Las Piñas City
Malabon City
and municipalities of
San Juan
Pateros
Navotas

the skyscrapers are generally concentrated in the cities of Makati, Pasig, Mandaluyong and Manila with some on the other cities...

here is a picture of Mandaluyong

Thanks pau_p1 for the pictures of Mandaluyong City.

Maybe the title of this thread should be changed to "Metro Manila Pictures" so that we could also include cityscape pictures of other cities in Metro Manila with large concentrations of skyscrapers.

That way our friends from all over the world can see what the national capital region of the Philippines is like.

I think they should scrap the name "city" after the city component names; its highly confusing and irregular normal terminology of city-components worldwide..

London for instance isnt one large city, its a Metro region like MM, but there is no big emphasizing of fragmenting the many cities and boroughs here that make up what is officially known as "Greater London". there are some areas here (literally towns with their own administration) that even share counties (provinces) between Greater London and others, for instance where i live (Mitcham) shares counties between Greater London and Surrey, but even officially it is termed as "London". Noone over tries to make London seem a fragmented metro, and that helps to project the image of London being one large strong unified city to the rest fo the world... They had also done this with most of the major cities on earth like Tokyo, Paris, L.A, Bangkok and HK.. they are all small component cities all joined to each other, just like MM, but through the terminology used to refer to these "cities", the rest of the world view them as large single cities. i think MM should do the same thing. it clears confusion that many non-pinoys have when referring to what the capital of the philippines should be called. :D

Even on SSC, u can see the confusion so many non-pinoys have when refering to MM; some classify it as a province and so believe it shouldnt be in the same league as the so-called "megacities" of K.L, Bangkok, Jakarta, Tokyo... When it comes to scrapers and skylines, many countries classify their metro-areas skyline to be one unified thing; but phils is the only place where a component is used as a separate skyline... wouldnt it be better to say "Metro-Manila" skyline rather than "Makati city skyline" "Mandaluyong city skyline" blabla.. If the other countries followed the MM train of thought, then a city like Tokyo will have to break up its component cities skylines too like "Shinjuku skyline" "Shibuya skyline" etc instead of the well known term "Tokyo Metro Skyline".. LOL

if Makati city was just called "makati" and Mandaluyong city just called "Mandaluyong", that would probably clear ALTO fo confusion non-filipino forumers may have

i'm all for an unoffical name of "Manila" to cover the cities... i dunno why MM is the only city on earth i kno that tries to emphasize the fragmentation of its cities than try to emphasize their unity :D

well Metro Manila is indeed officially Manila internationally.... :D

well I think that the difference would come that Metro Manila is indeed made of component cities unlike other major metropolises that they are composed of districts or burroughs or counties... :D

and Metro Manila is a unified region under the National Capital Region of the Philippines... so internationally when spoken of Manila... it denotes the General Manila Area or Metro Manila.... and not Manila City per se... :D

Officially, each component, like Makati, is a real city run by a Mayor and has its own ordinancies. Greater Manila has more than a dozen Mayors. Each city and town in Greater Manila has distinct borders and this is why Filipinos cannot view Greater Manila as just one single city because it is really is not a single city. Bangkok is, KL is, New York is, Manila is...but not Greater Manila. Manila (run a Mayor) by itself is very small, just over 40 sq. km. New York City (run by just one Mayor as well) by itself is over 800 sq. km. Greater New York -- a very huge agglomeration of cities such as Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia, DC and who knows what else -- cannot be viewed as a single city, can it?

The agglomeration that is Greater Manila is just like the agglomeration that is Greater New York but only in a tiny scale so one might assume it as just one city. Here's a list of legitimate Cities and Towns composing Greater Manila Area:

Greater Manila

Cities/Towns Population, 2000

Angono Rizal 74,668
Antipolo Rizal 470,866
Bacoor Cavite 305,699
Biñan Laguna 201,186

Makati NCR 444,867
Malabon NCR 338,855
Malolos Bulacan 175,291
Mandaluyong NCR 278,474
Manila NCR 1,581,082
Marikina NCR 391,170
Meycauayan Bulacan 163,037

Navotas NCR 230,403
Obando Bulacan 52,906
Parañaque NCR 449,811
Pasay NCR 354,908
Pasig NCR 505,058
Pateros NCR 57,407
Quezon City NCR 2,173,831
San Juan NCR 117,680
Sn Jose del Monte Bulacan 315,807
Santa Rosa Laguna 185,633
San Pedro Laguna 231,403
Taguig NCR 467,375
Taytay Rizal 198,183
Valenzuela NCR 485,433

Total 13,312,774 (est 2005 pop: 14, 550, 000)

NCR or National Capital Area is the official name of Metropolitan Manila created by former President Marcos so that his wife could run the region as its first and last Governor. The other cities and towns not incuded in NCR are those not officially included in the metro area, but due to their proximity (read: just a step away outside the official metro's borders), they are now recognized as part of the agglomeration. Cities and Towns inside the NCR are the only ones without a province. The others belong to their respective provinces like Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan and Rizal.

But I do agree -- the whole area should just be called Manila. The whole world knows Manila better than the Philippines itself. And it should have just one skyline. My point is -- you can't blame the Filipinos if they want to fragmentize their cities.

Makati and Manila proper (the capital) are both independent cities with their own city governments within Metro Manila. :colgate:

But if you look at it, Makati is like Metro Manila's city center. It's the downtown. I've been to Makati, the skyline may not be as great as HK but it looks modern though

yes, Makati CBD is one of the main business districts of Metro Manila, second is Ortigas Center, then last is along the Bay Area. other cities within the metro have their own CBD's as well although they are not as big and as busy as those of Makati and Ortigas.

Manila City, Makati City, Quezon City, Pasig City, Taguig City and about 9 more cities and towns are part of Metropolitan Manila a.k.a. Metro Manila or National Capital Region (NCR). Each of the cities and towns within Metro Manila has its own local government unit headed by a mayor (with vice mayor and city councilors); as a group they comprise the Metro Manila Council a.k.a. Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng NCR. :D
