Leipzig-Halle Airport is a tri-modal airport, located between the cities Leipzig and Halle (Central Germany), that connects rail, road and air traffic. Since the german reunification the airport has evolved step by step into a modern airport, that offers high-performance infrastructure and an exemplary connection of rail, road and air.

In 2007 Leipzig/Halle became the main European hub of DHL Express after the integrator quit Brussels due to night flight restrictions imposed by Belgian politicians. With the DHL hub fully up and running, DHL and Lufthansa Cargo operations largely contributed to an extreme rise in cargo volume, which increased by 336.8 percent to 442,750 tonnes in 2009.

Highlight of the airport the multi-functional Central Terminal, joining the airport railway station, the central check-in area, the multi-storey car park and diverse service and shopping facilities. The Central Terminal has an annual capacity of 4.5 million passengers. Due to its modular structure as well as its central location between the two runways the Central Terminal can be extended to accommodate capacity of seven million passengers per year.

In 2000, the 3,600-metre-long northern runway was taken into operation.
The commissioning of the new South Runway in 2007 provides Leipzig-Halle Airport with a parallel runway system allowing simultaneous take-offs and landings.

DHL Cargo Hub Europe

In 2005, Deutsche Post Worldnet decided to build it's new european hub at Leipzig-Halle Airport, because night-flight operations could not be expanded at the existing DHL hub in Brussels. The hub’s operative headquarters were transferred to Leipzig-Halle in mid-2007. While DHL was busy with building its own facilities, Leipzig-Halle Airport was completing the 3,600-meter-long southern runway.

Originally planned for fall 2008, the hub’s operative launch was moved forward to spring 2008. In late May,it was officially declared open for business.Every night around 60 aircraft from all corners of the globe land at the hub. The DHL hub operates around the clock, 365 days of the year. Every night around 60 aircraft from all corners of the globe land at the new airfreight hub.

The planes land on the southern runway, take up their fixed clearance positions, swap containers and take off again into the night. The parcels are then sorted and cleared for onward transport by air, truck or rail. In order to ensure the aircraft are checked thoroughly at regular intervals, a hangar was built to accommodate DHL's Boeings and Airbuses.

In 2007 Lufthansa Cargo and Leipzig-Halle Airport have signed agreement on strategic partnership, with the aim of jointly developing the airport into one of the most efficient in Europe. Among the key objectives of the agreement are plans to increase space at the airport conducive to the long-term strategic development of Lufthansa Cargo in Leipzig as well as joint efforts to raise efficiency, security and environmental protection at the Airport.

In 2009, Lufthansa Cargo shifted its cargo handling activities into the World Cargo Center. The move into the World Cargo Center marks an important step for Lufthansa Cargo in the expansion of Leipzig-Halle as an air cargo base.

Cargo Volume increased by 336,8 percent

With the DHL hub fully up and running, DHL and Lufthansa Cargo operations largely contributed to an extreme rise in cargo volume, which increased by 336.8 percent to 442,750 tonnes in 2009. This trend is expected to continue particularly due to the strategic partnership on which Lufthansa Cargo and Leipzig-Halle Airport agreed at the end of 2008.

Aerologic - joint airline of DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo

Since 2009 Leipzig-Halle Airport is also the home base for the first cargo carrier in Central Germany. The establishment of the new, globally operating cargo airline AeroLogic further boosts Leipzig-Halle’s position as the most important logistics location in the region and will create hundreds of direct as well as indirect jobs.

With eight new Boeing 777-freight aircraft the joint venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo will further increase the airfreight and express business from and to Asia as well as North America that already operates from Leipzig/Halle Airport.

Looks like the plane on the left is going to take off from that tiny rest of the old runway. :)

Looks like a nice airport. Also nice pics of the A380 and the other cargo planes. Is this a newly built airport? It looks so new. Hope DHL can make their present a big gain for the local area.

To be more precise: The airport's history goes back until 1927. In 2000, the new 3,600 meters long Runway North was put into operation. Construction for the new Central Terminal started two years later. Reconstruction of Runway South and aprons followed in 2005. In the course of its reconstruction, Runway South was rotated by 20 degrees, extended from 2,500 to 3,600 meters and aligned parallel with Runway North.

LEJ has more than enough passenger handling capacity for the next lets say 10 years or even more.In 2010 passenger numbers recorded a fall by 2.6 percent to 2,35 Mio.

But cargo makes all the difference there: last year cargo throughput grew by 26.5 percent - despite the economical crisis.Overall 663,024 tonnes of air freight were handled. So expansion of cargo facilities is necessary only.Currently the airport is building new hangars and aprons as well as aircraft stands for freighters with large capacity.

Last year the airport also signed a strategic cooperation with Shenzhen's Bao Airport. (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=354666&page=2)

A german business man has bought an old Iljuschin IL-62 from Leipzig-Halle Airport. He wants to make an restaurant out of it. The plane was transported through the whole city of Leipzig:
