View Full Version : Couple of questions about the area I am moving in next Sunday!
Sirera May 5th, 2010, 05:55 AM Hi Chicagoans!
I am moving to Oak Park next Sunday after a 14 hour drive from Oklahoma City, where I have been living and studying for four years with my wife (she's from there, I am from Barcelona).
I'll make it short and sweet:
1) I will not have a job for the time being untiil I find one (translator/interpreter), so can you guys tell me what cool stuff is in Oak Park? Besides the fact that I'll live really close to Hemingway's home, i don't know anything else lol
2) I am going crazy on this one: Can anybody tell me about a theatre that will play classic movies? Surely there is one around my area, or even anywhere nearby!
Thanks for your help, can't wait to get there after I graduate this Saturday!
C
Mr Downtown May 5th, 2010, 03:36 PM 3) Unfortunately, the VCR killed the classic cinema in the US. Sometimes there are special events at the Lake in Oak Park or the York in Elmhurst. A couple of nonprofits show 16mm prints at libraries and the like; they'll be listed in the Tribune's Friday Live! section. The Music Box on Southport, Facets near Fullerton/Damen, and the Gene Siskel Film Center in the Loop show foreign and obscure films, which occasionally includes classics. It's a shame; I desperately wish I could see some of the great old films on a big screen again.

^^ THIS! What a gem! Landmark does some more obscure films as well. The outdoor film festival every year has classic films, I don't know if this will be continued this year though. :-[ Music Box always has some classics showing at midnight.
#1, I love Oak Park, but I'm not sure it's filled with "to-see" sights. Downtown OP is nice, the houses in the neighborhoods are awesome. The parks are nice. I went to high school in OP for 4 years, but I really can't think of anything...it's just a cool place to wander around. Peterson Ice cream was always a favorite of mine, check it out on Chicago Ave and Harlem
criminal May 5th, 2010, 05:43 PM Northsider,
did you go to Fenwick? (you mentioned once you grew up in Elmhurst, so I figure you went to a private school in OP). my cousins all went to Fenwick; they're mid twenties now.
Oh and welcome to Chicago Sirera.

Oh and welcome to Chicago Sirera.
Yea, I grew up in Elmhurst and I attended Fenwick, class of '02. Stop stalking me! :-p
Sirera May 5th, 2010, 06:00 PM Wow, I really thought there would be more classic movie showings around the city; in OKC there is nothing but I was really hoping there would be more here...thanks for those links nevertheless.

 i'm not stalking you, I've just got a good memory. I won't tell you their names because my sweeet little 120lb female cousin probably beat your nerdy ass throughout HS. :)
Sirera, they do have showing semi frequently at the different theatres, you just need to keep your eyes peeled.

There's the Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio and Unity Temple which both offer tours. Many private homes designed by FLW are scattered throughout town. Great for architecture buffs.
Most of the commercial activity (within walking distance) is centered along Lake St from Harlem to Oak Park avenue. Just take a stroll and see what interests you. There are multiple coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, bookstores, etc. My personal favorite is Lido's, an Italian-style cafe on Marion St, just off Lake (http://www.lidoscaffe.com/).
The main public library is near Lake and Oak Park Ave and is quite good. Next to the Library is Scoville Park, which serves as the "town square". In the summer there are festivals and free concerts there. The Farmer's Market will be starting up soon and is on Lake Street near the high school every Saturday morning.
Of course the green line el and Metra tracks are just south of Lake st for easy access into Chicago.

I was far from nerdy, but I'm curious now. :-D
criminal May 5th, 2010, 06:32 PM The Kelly's (Mike, Katie, and Colleen) from Western Springs. I think Mike is about your age. If you didn't like them, I won't take it personally.

Hah, I know them, especially considering I share the same last name. :-]
criminal May 5th, 2010, 07:19 PM Small world, huh. I'm a Kelly as well (i hope you don't spell it the PROTESTANT way). Actually I'm playing golf with their dad this afternoon. I've gotta scoot now, good talkin' to you.
Coldwake May 5th, 2010, 09:49 PM Northsider, now we ALL know too much about you. We're all going to stalk you.
