ADDIS ABABA Projects & Construction Thread
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this thread, projects from all over Addis will be showcased. If you have participated in the East African (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=368541)/West African (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=368540)/Central African (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=368537)/Southern African (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=368538)/Nothern African (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=368536) Development Fact Files in the General Africa section...well, this will work exactly the same way.

I think its a good idea to turn this into a thread solely dedicated to

1.) projects in Addis (these can be roads, buldings, factories, etc.) , as well as such things that affect them, for example

updated pictures
their completion status
funding issues
construction issues
change in design or even cancellation

2.) additionally, posting links to projects in Addis that already have threads in this section is a good idea so we can have them access to them all in once place. for example:

link to: ADDIS ABABA | Mexico Square Development Tower | Proposed (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=819360)

I will post most of the links to these projects in the following post and everyone can add on as the thread goes on. After you start a thread for a new project in Addis just come in here and post a link to it so it is easy to find.

Projects for anyplace outside of Addis can be posted in new threads as usual.
Projects in Addis can have seperate threads as well as being posted in here.

I heard an interview saying that UNESCO had moved into their new building, it also lists 'new buiilding' on their website as their address. So I think that may be completed.

The Drug Administration Control building says 60% completed on the construction company's website, but the website hasnt been updated in a long time, and I am not sure but I remember that building being inagurated not long ago (I maybe wrong tho).

The other two I dont have much information about.

[Edit:] And you are right Yonii, we definitely need more quality hospitals, and some existing hospitals needs new medical equipment and a new buildings desperately. More staff is also needed, volunteers and help with cleaning and upkeeping of the facilities.

There is an interview in CapitalEthiopia where Black Lion is said to be ready to build new facilities and upgrade alot of their buildings.

Good projects.

Is it UNESCO or UNICEF that's moving into the yellowish building in the Kazanchis cluster of buildings? I guess it's UNICEF if UNESCO is building something.

Hey guys, just discovered these architects. We can start new threads for each project, but since I have no details on them I didn't think it was necessary.

Stadium Area
2B+G+13
2B+G+13 mixed use building Complex.
Addis Ababa ( Wegagen Bank head quarters, infront of Stadium, Near by Lalibella restaurant. Design Completed)

- I'm a bit confused because Wegagen Bank says on their website that it's 20-stories tall and news articles state it's 22 stories :dunno:

http://ultimateplancae.com/images/com_fwgallery/files/62/oromia-presidental-office.jpg

http://ultimateplancae.com/images/com_fwgallery/files/62/consultation-and-engineering.jpg

The construction of the presidential office of the Oromia Regional State and six other buildings that was awarded to Afro Tsion Construction Company in July 2010, for 274.8 million Br, in kebele 01, Nefas Silk Lafto District, is to start on October 11, 2010, after having been delayed.
...
The design of the project, which has done by Ultimate Consulting Engineers and Architects for free, includes a presidential office building, an assembly hall, and four medium and small conference halls. The projected cost of the assembly hall, 101 million Br, requires the lion’s share of the total projected cost of 274.8 million Br, while the council office takes the second highest at 56.2 million Br.

Ultimate and Afro Tsion are not new to the construction projects of the Oromia urban Works Bureau with the former also having designed four buildings of the Oromia Regional Government Sectoral office and the latter constructing them for 85 million Br. - Source (http://www.icdconglobal.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=18&Itemid=81)

Don't think I like it, looks too jumbled up. My favorite parliament building is Sri Lanka's (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidaths/465562926/sizes/l/in/photostream/), simple and traditional.

^^ These Oromia region people piss me off! They spend millions building offices in Nazareth, and then abandon that and start building all over again in Addis. This is so wasteful!

They've spoken on how they want to have Addis as their capital, and have had offices there for some time, and I suppose that now that they will be building the Nazret-Addis highway it won't be such a problem. I've felt that the Oromia regional parliament ought to move to the old Parliament building when they move out.

On the other hand, I think the future parliemnt building should be larger and more dominant towards the city's cityscape. The design, I think' is very attractive though.

The employees at Access are all quite attractive. It was good to go into their VERY nicely decorated office and see only young people, very professional in their attitude, and very stylish too in how they dress (it was business casual but with flair). It really felt like I was walking in a scene of how I imagine Ethiopia will be in 20 years time.

Those salespeople look harmless, but they are like sharks I tell you. I was there with my family and another family friend, and while we were talking with our sales associate (the guy in the front row, second from the right), the ladies talking with clients on nearby tables were closing deals left and right. We were there maybe 45 minutes, and at least 4-5 people bought apartments and houses in that time (basically everyone who showed up bought something lol).

"Ózd Industrial Park

The project involved-parallel with the overall reorganisation of the steel industry of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county in crisis-hit North Hungary-the creation of a new, rehabilitated industrial park, on some 51 hectares of the original industrial plant at Ózd, with an eye to contributing to the economic transformation and structural changes of the region, and promoting a fresh entrepreneurial environment. Over 80 enterprises are already operating on the premises, employing some 1,400 people. The cheap and diversely qualified labour available, the proximity of the markets of the neighbouring countries, the regional preferences and tax allowances granted for the creation of jobs, infrastructural development, and rehabilitation make Ózd Industrial Park an ideal place both for Hungarian and foreign investors. The development and complex utilisation of the park is undertaken by Ózd Industrial Park Ltd., under the majority ownership of COVENT Co. Ltd. "

I feel very apprehensive whenever i see companies selling shares like this. It's one thing if there was a regulated and controlled stock market, but it seems to me like everybody and their mothers are setting up a 'share companies' these days. How can they be trusted? What if the organizers just split with the money?

^^ I really don't know how they're regulated, but that's an issue that's been mentioned several times now (not at SSC) since there has been an explosion of such companies. We need a stock market with a regulatory body ASAP.

Well said ... It seems like the main design was by a British architect (British Council's in-house architect), but design development was by an Ethiopian team, quite impressive:
"The British Council worked with a team of Addis Ababa based consultants to develop the project all of whom have previously been involved in the British Embassy work and the recently completed DFID building in Addis Ababa, including RAAS Architects PLC as architects with G.T Consulting Engineers for the structural design and San-Mech Consult P.L.C and Fastek Consult for the M&E design and CPMS (Ethiopia) PLC as Project Manager and Quantity Surveyor. The UK company Peter Deer Associates were appointed to produce the concept design for environmental design, and Gleeds, a UK company with an office based in Dubai have also assisted in some of the project management and cost consultancy."

Here's more from the same article:
"The concept design has been produced by the British Council's own in-house architects. Emma Vergette, Head of Architecture at the British Council who says 'We want the building to project an image of contemporary UK, but have used the city of Addis Ababa as the source of reference for its architectural language."
Historically the site of the capital city was chosen partly for its large natural resource of forests. The British Council has chosen to celebrate the importance of timber to the city in the design by re-using the eucalyptus and other hardwood trees that had to be felled as part of the site clearance. The timber was roughly sawn and cut into randomly sized planks and applied to the left hand side of the front façade. This gives a highly textured wall when either naturally or artificially lit.

"One of the most amazing sites in Addis", says Emma Vergette, "is the amorphic, crinkly tin roofed houses and shops that meander through the gaps between the more modern buildings in the natural slopes of the city. Individual dwellings and units are indistinguishable with this almost continuous roofing membrane." Again the British Council architects have used this reference in the design by creating a free standing screen, set away from the main façade using randomly positioned, randomly shaped steel sheets meshed together that will form a walkway to the car park.

The building showcases some of the latest thinking in environmental design illustrating the British Council's firm commitment to sustainability. The building is naturally ventilated using wind-catchers set into the roof structure and the mass of the building's envelope and the way the windows have been positioned in the façade minimise the solar heat gain and the amount of energy required to heat and cool the building. Sun pipes have been installed in the roof that bring natural light to the heart of the building, so saving the need for electrical lighting for most of the day."

XV Studio unveils the design of a project of a multistory market, Lideta Mercato, in Ethiopia’s capital city Addis Ababa. This project was the result of a winning entry of a pre-qualified competition that is planned to start construction in May 2011.
http://cdn.archdaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/1301065154-xv-lideta-topview-1000x562.jpg
http://cdn.archdaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/1301065129-xv-lideta-01.jpg
The new market is located in an area currently under development in Addis Ababa. The surrounding buildings under construction define a very dense neighborhood based on middle rise residential buildings and a car-based street system. The project is a simple volume that is carved to create an interior world in a multistory contemporary building based on the traditional market principles. The diagonal void connects the two parallel streets and intersects the inclined atrium where the entrance and connections through the levels occur.
http://cdn.archdaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/1301065137-xv-lideta-07.jpg
http://cdn.archdaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/1301065135-xv-lideta-06.jpg
The inclined void creates a variety of circulation and organization of the shops in each floor and reinforces the idea of continuity from the ground floor to the roof. The building is an open air space enclosed by a perforated concrete sheet that allows ventilation and natural illumination and protects from the sun and the rain. The fractal pattern of the façade is derived from the patterns used in traditional Ethiopian dresses; it provides a filter of light and views from the inside and an attraction for people from the outside.
http://cdn.archdaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/1301065130-xv-lideta-02.jpg
http://cdn.archdaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/1301065153-xv-lideta-seccion-1000x562.jpg
The roof contains gathering and recreational areas, a new urban oasis protected from the rain and the sun. The circular porches and the roof collect the water from the rain to be processed and reused for sanitation. The porches also hold a network of photovoltaic panels that produce and store electrical energy for the interior and illuminate up the façade at night.

Spy Agency's HQ to Cost 100m Br

HQs for INSA plus four other agencies under 2010/11's federal budget at 115m Br

A newly established spy agency, designated with the task of securing the nation’s information technology infrastructure, the Information Network & Security Agency (INSA), will soon have its ultramodern headquarters at a cost of 100 million Br, Fortune learned.

INSA’s headquarters is part of the federal government’s plan to construct several new buildings with a budget of 115 million Br for the 2010/11 fiscal year, according to the budget endorsed by Parliament.

The federal government is undertaking construction work for the headquarters of the Central Statistics Agency (CSA), the Ethiopian Customs and Revenues Authority (ERCA), the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) and the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA).

These buildings will cost the state a total of 238 million Br in total, of which ERCA and ERA have been denied building permits from the city government due to the newly introduced rules regulating building heights.

INSA wants to build its headquarters within five blocks, each with 13 to 17 storeys on a 16,000sqm plot granted by the Addis Abeba City Administration on the Ethio-China Friendship Road, inside what was previously the College of Telecommunications and Information Technology (CTIT) under the former Ethiopian Telecommunications Cooperation (ETC). The plot given to INSA in 2008 was previously reserved for the construction of hotels.

The design for INSA’s headquarters is developed by MH Consulting Engineers and Architects, which has its marks in the city’s architectural landscape, including the model units of the condominium houses. It is also known for its works with the former GTZ in designing the 10 university complexes built across the country.

Description on their website:

ORDA is an Ethiopian-operated, Non-Government Organization (non-profit) that focuses primarily on water development programs as a key step in the strategy to end chronic poverty and food shortages in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

Since our founding, ORDA has devised strategies and programs that benefit nearly three million people. During this time, we’ve acquired valuable experience, professional excellence and a proven record of success in sustainable community-based development.

Ethiopians helping Ethiopians is important to our success because, like anyone else, the people of Ethiopia are more likely to accept advice from and collaborate with those who share and understand their culture. And when programs face challenges that are rooted in deeply ingrained cultural practices—which they so often do in developing countries—no one is better positioned to find a viable solution than the people who grew up in the same culture.
ORDA is Not About Handouts

We all know that type of help lasts only as long as the supply. Rather, we’re about partnering and collaborating. We’re about providing people with the knowledge and resources they need to achieve their own success.

Most of all, we’re about helping the people of Amhara develop passion, dignity and pride. Because when people have that, there is nothing they can’t accomplish.

The six-storey building, which rests on a 1,000sqm plot of land in front of Cathedral High School located on Wawel Street, has seen an optimistic response from businesses since its opening for rent less than a week ago.

‘‘We have already rented 15 offices and 20 shops,” Nega Abraha, manager of Country House Trading Plc, told Fortune. ‘‘The commercial spaces rent for 491 Br, 352 Br, and 345 Br a square metres, located on the first, second, and third floors, respectively.”

The building, which took three years to construct, has 52 shops on the first three floors, with the rest of the floors containing 30 offices to rent to businesses engaged in work related to technology.

“If we are left with some of the offices [unrented], we might provide some for mixed-use,” Nega said.

In addition to the shops and offices, there is a 30sqm cinema to accommodate about 250 to 300 viewers at a time and a parking lot for about 60 cars, which is to be housed on the two basement floors, with exits on each of the four sides of the building, according to the company.

And this is a story of one innovator with great views

The quality is slowly improving, but I still think the government should pay to train architects abroad, their work constitutes a form of visual pollution.

I'm pretty sure that GTZ is involved in the design. That really pisses me off though - they'd never build this kind of building in their own country, but they fool around in Ethiopia. I met one German guy who worked there, and he told me most of them are east Germans, so basically they have a hard time using their pre-reunification qualifications to get good jobs in west Germany, so they are the ones working on these kinds of projects. I don't know how true that is, but it came from the horse's mouth so...

"... in front of the Flamingo Bar and about 300 meters from the Maskal Square on the left hand side of the Africa Avenue on the way to the Bole International Airport."

and google earth shows this dug up area at that spot (between the sunshine hq & oromia office) [btw: google map has been updated with new Addis satellite imagery]

http://www.bikyamasr.com/77972/ethiopia-govt-supports-hilton-hotels-expansion-in-country/

ADDIS ABABA: The Ethiopian government has said it supports the proposed expansion efforts by international hotel chain Hilton Hotels as it looks to add a number of properties in the East African country.

Acting Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, who is to be sworn in later this week, said that the government gave its assurances to the hotel chain for its continued efforts to expand in Ethiopia.

Speaking on Wednesday with the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hilton Worldwide Christopher Nassetta, Desalegn said that “the need for the hotel chain to expand its services here as Ethiopia was a country, which hosted a significant number of international and regional meetings every year.”

Ethiopia is also a destination for thousands of visitors, said the PM, who added that the government “would provide its full support to the hotel chain in its efforts to expand its services.”

A Hilton official told Bikyamasr.com that they have been in talks with the government to develop at least two new properties in the country over the next few years to add to the growing tourism industry in the country.

Desalegn also called on Hilton Worldwide to “contribute to the ongoing efforts to build up the good image of the country.”

A spokesman for Desalegn said it was the “first time that Nassetta was visiting Africa although Hilton had been providing quality services for the past over 50 years in the country.”

Ethiopia’s economic growth created opportunities for expansion of the hotel industry in the country.

Nassetta said activities were underway to construct additional Hilton hotels in Africa and Ethiopia is one of the countries given priority for this purpose.

Hilton Worldwide has more than 4,000 hotels across the world, including 33 in Africa.

Let's hope your prior comment doesn't apply here, abesha. :P

It looks like the quality of the architecture is really improving, though. I really like this one. I found some more info and pictures:

The new Shopping Mall & Leisure Centre is located in an area in development in Addis Ababa. The surrounding buildings under construction define a very dense neighbourhood based on middle rise residential buildings and a car based street system.

The shapes of the place which is not regular generate a complex geometry of the plan. A rectangular plan, aligned to the main axes of communication, joined with a cone in the vertex.

The different geometry defines the different programs: in the rectangular portion is the Shopping Mall and in the conical portion the Leisure Centre.

A large courtyard defines the distribution around the shops. Two passageways, parallel to the tangent of the conical surface, cut the courtyard in the middle, and generate the communication guidelines inside the building.

The facade idea is a ventilated wall made with polymer concrete system inspired from these beautiful patterns of the traditional Ethiopian dresses.

The ventilated facade plays an important part in the overall appearance of the whole site; its colors create a pleasing contrast with the landscaped surroundings

The roof contains gathering and recreational areas, a new urban oasis protected from the rain and the sun.

Does anyone know what's being planned at the corner of Wollo Sefer and Bole Ave? They've razed a large area there. I remember walking along Wollo Sefer in the summer and seeing all the dust and fences but never realised the scale of the area untill mucking around in Google Earth.

Actually, the article says that the building will be 60 stories---NOT "50 to 60".
My bad ... you're right. Confused it with the 50 to 60 million dollar income of the company the guy owns ... I must be dyslexic or something lol

Is there an English translation or a site on the internet to go to to translate to and from Amharic?

I'm trying to read the article posted today by Skyliner123 from the Ethiopian Reporter.
Google has Amharic translation.

I doubt we'll see a 50-story building. I wish they'd keep the Ethiopia Hotel as is and renovate the interior. It's a historic building. Oh well.

I don't get this part. I thought the Commercial Bank was the one building next door, not the Development Bank? Is this another example of shoddy reporting or did we miss an announcement by the Development Bank?

The President and CEO of Hilton Worldwide; Chris Nasseta says that his company’s management team is very excited about Africa.

“We are very positive about the growth opportunity of Africa,” said the president and CEO of one of the leading global hotel chains in his first visit to Ethiopia intended to become familiar with Ethiopian officials last Thursday.

“My visit is intended to introduce myself to the government as the hotel is partly owned by the government. We have spoken with the Acting Prime Minister of Ethiopia about the existing hotel and other business opportunities in the country as the Ethiopian economy continues to grow in a rapid phase. We had a lively visit,” said Nasseta.

“We have talked about travel and tourism. We are working on expansion projects that include broader distribution networks. Our primary focus is this property [Hilton Addis Ababa] and the Hilton community here. It is a very strategic asset for us. It provides quite a nice foundation for this part of the world in general and Ethiopians in particular. That would be a platform for further growth. One of the reasons I am here is to talk with our team and government representative about further growth opportunities,” he added.
Nasseta takes a stopover in Addis Ababa on his way from Dubai to South Africa. He is on a weeklong visit through the continent, the first since he took office in 2007.

“The Hotel market is very competitive. We compete against Sheraton and Radisson Blu. They are our primary competitors. It is really an individual by individual market completion. Broadly, we really see our competition from the very large global hospitality companies. The best examples of such companies are Starwood, Marriot, Intercontinental, and some others,” he said while speaking about the competition in hotel business both nationally and globally.

Hilton owns more than one thousand hotels carrying 10 brand names worldwide with 33 in Africa. It has opened its door in Malabo while looking for opportunities in Kinshasa and Angola. It also has projects in Sierra Leone and Chad.

Hilton Worldwide has more than 161 thousand rooms in the pipeline. This makes it the fastest growing hotel company in the world by expanding the company’s investment portfolio by 29 percent since June 2007. This enabled it to surpass all competitors in total rate of room growth. The Addis Ababa Hilton was established almost five decades ago during the reign of Haile Selassie I.

The Hilton is a failing brand, at least in the developing world but no investment is bad investment.

Urgh, enough with this China. Just get someone else to do it. Anyone else. ABC - Anyone But China.

The reason they choose Chinese companies is,not because they preferred Chinese work over any others ,,,but because most of this big construction projects are financed by Chinese banks, in form of cheap and low interest loans ,which is prefereble for government's and country's that doesn't have the means or capital to finance their own projects,, and the main condition the Chinese banks put forward in order to approve their loan's is, that any project that the loan is taken for is going to be carried out by a Chinese company ,, that is their way of keeping their money in china. The loan comes from Chinese bank and gets paid to a Chinese company that will do the job,, the bank will get back its money from which ever country its loaned it to.. the countries dont mind because the loan they get from Chinese banks are cheap compared to any other western financial institutions and they don't come with political preconditions.

How long are these projects supposed to take? If I'm not mistaken, this building was under construction when I was there in 2009.
