View Full Version : The best Brutalist buildings around the world...
nicksplace27 May 8th, 2010, 04:28 AM Brutalism gets crapped on pretty often as terrible architecture that should be torn down immeadiately (even moreso than Meisian modernism) but I think that thought process is premature in many respects. Brutalist buildings are imposing and help bring an institutional feel to buildings. So, in order to show some love, I'd like people to post thier favorite examples of Brutalist architecture. Mine is the Schmitt Academic Center at DePaul University in Chicago. The Proportions and size of this building is perfect and it's a perfect testament to the Brutalist style.
Heres a render.

La Repuvlica May 8th, 2010, 08:06 AM For me, the brutalism looks boring when the concrete is hard, heavy, flat; but, when you see designs with concrete fluid, dancing on movement, is when the brutalism turns on epic buldings, interseting for the common people.
edyel190 May 8th, 2010, 08:25 AM Those buildings are kinda interesting, like Porsche headquarter in Italy.

Concrete Stereo May 10th, 2010, 09:37 PM Yeah, Bratislava has a lot of great brutal modernism.
Actually, the term 'brutalism' doesn't come from brutality, but from "béton brut" - concrete left unfinished or roughly-finished after pouring and left exposed visually. So: I'm sorry Iluminat, that's no Brutalism haha
Iluminat May 10th, 2010, 10:33 PM ^^Well at least the podium-entrance is Brutalist (concrete and red brick) as for the "pyramid" part it's more controversial but I would say it gives the right impression, not all Brutalist buildings have exposed concrete:
