Yeah, a lot is going on. Unfortunatly not so much highrise, most of it midrise. But the projects are nice, especially around central station, it's getting dense!

The number of cranes, especially at Westerdokseiland, is still impressive.

The construction at Oosterdokseiland has been pretty slow at the moment. What's happening?

Symphony is going at a slow pace, but at least the floors are piling up about every 3 weeks. There has been a lot of traffic changes recently because they are transferring heavy machinery in and out of the construction site.

Symphony has grown about 3 floors higher in those 3 weeks.

The Oosterdokseiland on the west side they are busy at -1, while between the library and the west side they are still at -2.

[DROOL] That is classy in a way that only the Dutch can achieve. wonderful proportions, brilliant verticality, simplicity, elegance, order, calmness, timelessness. love it

some of it at least... I didnt see the crazy post modern bit... and perhaps theyre a bit too close together... makes them look like a single bulky building from most angles...

If you like architecture in general a must have is an architectural map of Amsterdam. According to internet you can buy it at AKO, a shop at Central Station.
You can also visit Arcam, (Amsterdam centre of architecture) which created the map, only 4 minutes by bike from Central Station: http://www.arcam.nl/tips/architectuurroutes_uk.html

As for modern city expansion projects a must visit is the "Nieuwekerk":

This will be a bit of an easter egg in the Amsterdam topic, but I wanted to show this spa building in my hometown, Esztergom, Hungary. It was finished in late 2005, and it has a shocking resemblance to your NEMO museum. Officially ours wasn't based on the NEMO, the architect never said anything about being influenced by it. I just stumbled upon a picture of your muesum on Wikipedia. and saw the similarity.

Het IJ is a sort of mini lake that separates the North part of Amsterdam from the rest of Amsterdam. At the moment it's being developed. Because there is not a lot of space left for Amsterdam to expand they figured they could build some custom islands here and there. Ofcourse the Dutch are the masters of creating custom islands in the sea and lakes :cheers:

Rieteiland-Oost is one of the smaller islands in the IJburg phase 1 project. It's for the more wealthy people. There are still some villa's available. The prices shown in the quote below is only the piece of land. A villa still needs to be constructed and that's gonna cost a little more probably.

The Green Strip located at the metro Court is the designated place Spaklerweg along the front of the hotel. It is the dynamic heart of the environment. The design is of concrete and consists of a slender Tower on a raised wooden platform, which connects to all functions: the reception, the bar, meeting spaces, the restaurant, the lounge. The broad wooden staircases invite you to sit, walk eat or drink. Inside and outside are only separated by glass panels. There is an open and informal atmosphere.


The facts: 240 rooms (15 rooms per floor, including 2 suites, 16 floors), above and on the second floor office and meeting facilities and 90 parking places in the underground parking basement.

Once the investor and operator are contracted, it will design be further elaborated.

Looks unusual :)

You can see diagonal beams on each floor, going from shell to core in the picture above, this seems very unusual from constructive point of view. Could anybody tell me how they prevent it from twisting around its core and why they use so many diagonal beams?

I will one day visit this amazing place. Amsterdam is for sure one of my favorite cities in the world!!
