not bad, you know, Rotterdam is not the only city in the Netherlands with lots of plans for skyscrapers, but because of Schiphol the skyscrapers can't be to high in A'dam. that's a pitty. Rotterdam can built higher then in A'dam. and that's one of the reasons why Rotterdam is more famous then A'dam. But you can see, A'dam has also skyscrapers but they're a bit lower.

Good it is, things are progressing nicely, i cant wait to go to Amsterdam and see them all finished

Yess, the marina is part off the project too. From there going the ferry's to Amsterdam North. The marina was always there but they have to move it 40 meters to make enough space for the central busstation. That way we get a big public transport connection of train, metro, tram, busses, ferry's and only 15 minutes by train away one of europe biggest airports Schiphol Amsterdam.

Amsterdam amazes me. There's a lot of construction going on but it never has the most spectacular scale. But then taken all the "small" projects together it is a booming city. Other cities that do concentrate building activities in one area often get more attention.

Funny...... I'm from holland and have been to Amsterdam many times.....but to see the developments in one catch, really makes clear that Amsterdam actually is booming. Although the skyline is a bit off, because the scrapers are scattered around the city. Zuidas is an exeption to the rule. Love Mahler4! Fantastic building!!!

Fu*k, you dutch simply are the best. Why do you always seem to do everything right?

The thing is all offices used to be located in the old city centre. Even with the "bad economy" all companies are moving from the city centre towards the new area´s.
These area´s are "the Arena", "Sloterdijk" and "the Zuidas". Their are also smaller locations like the east side of the Highway ring west and the Omval(near Amstel train station)
These locations have better public transport(metro) and are near the major highways. Along with the stimulation of the central city to intensivy the usage of ground their is alot of construction going on.
The Dutch government also wants more homes inside Amsterdam which made it a real building boom.
I have heart some ppl say that in Amsterdam there are the most project U/C or in development, residental and commercial. Its even beats Berlin ;)

Project Ijdock.

Ijdock is a part off the bigger project Ijoevers (Ijbank) Westerdokseiland.
This new project close by the central station will house 70 houses, The new ****star Carlten Marina Hotel with 280 rooms, 6.000 m2 Commercial area, 30.000 m2 Office space, a garage for 500 cars and a marina with place for 65 boats.

It's funny to see the amount of construction areas in Amsterdam when i'm traveling from my work in Amsterdam to Utrecht.
I get in the train and... from the moment i leave the Central station, till i atcually leave Amsterdam it's one big construction area.

- Central Station
- Oosterdok Eiland, from there you can see the Shellterrein (will be u/c soon),
- then there's A LOT going on around the passengers terminal
- the new IJ tram to IJBurg
- then to the right there's a huge (a really long one... not high) appartment complex u/c , not quite sure what the name is.
- then a bit later you'll pass Amstel where the DWR towers are u/c
- from there you can see a bunch of new buildings rise... Zuidas
- then the area around the Arena Boulevard with al lot of activity there.

Did i forget something? ;-)

Maar goed Nederlanders staan er om bekend dat ze altijd maar moeten zeuren. Oh en al deze foto´s staan al op het Nederlandse forum.

Watching from Melbourne Australia...........visited Amsterdam in 2000 and loved your city ...........the old city and the new areas.Interesting architecture down near the Ajax Arena. And around the docklands,The combination of preservation and incorporation into new development should be a lesson to the wider world. Love it!!!! hope to visit again some time. Prost ? I think ?

Holland is the most beautiful country in Europe!

Amsterdam was the first city I visited in Europe and I found it historically, artistically and culturally overwhelming, for some reason ;) even more so than Paris, London and Berlin but just barely of course. And yet I hear people who think of it merely as an airport hub with tourism. It's role in modern times is too often forgotten so it's nice to see it's not too old to still show off -- go Amsterdam :cheers:

Wow the Netherlands have got it ALL

I hope that the Getz entertaiment centre in this shape will be built, but the project may be cancelled because of the casino I heard. There's a law in the Netherlands, that prescribes that a city in Holland only can have one Hollland Casino. Amsterdam has already one, so I hope there won't be too much trouble around the project.

Amsterdam Arena area is booming, stunning architecture, and lots of highrises. the plans now includes 2 towers of 150 meters, and one tower of 130 meter for the coming years, and there are already alot of highrises up to 100 meter.

Facts & Figures

Zuidas is situated between the Amstel and Schinkel rivers, to the north and south of the southern section of the A10 ring road. The municipality of Amsterdam wants to develop the area into a modern city centre with 45% residential buildings, 45% commercial buildings and 10% facilities such as shops, sports centres, cafés and restaurants. Zuidas plans are based on a gross floor space of approximately 2.5 million square metres.
Basement or dyke model

The A10 ring road and the railway track currently run through the middle of the area; this is called the dyke model. The municipality of Amsterdam wants to move the infrastructure (roads and railway track) underground - the so-called 'dokmodel' (basement model) - over a distance of 1.2 km. This would free considerably more space for living and working. Amsterdam City Council and central government, both of which want to expand the infrastructure, are studying the financial feasibility of Zuidas with underground infrastructure, the so-called 'dokmodel'. The plans will be realized in partnership with private parties. In December 2000, ING, ABN AMRO and NS Vastgoed (the real estate arm of Dutch Railways) guaranteed the City of Amsterdam that they would take responsibility for the development of land above this infrastructure 'basement' to the value of almost one billion euro.

Nope, that's where the entrance to the old (ugly) postoffice halls used to be, you can see the restaurant a little further towards the top left on the picture.

that looks damn great, I heard about the height, that's nice.

This looks like a study for a urban development project. The towers can become this high,
but I first want to see some real designs to believe that it will really happen.

The roof looks it's made of copper? Atleast it seems to get flat which is nice.
It looks great but why made it from copper when it will turn green. Think of the statue of liberty for example, or 40 Wall Street (aka Trump building, how original...).

Did they demolish the docks (boat station) next to Amsterdam centraal station???

I love Amsterdam. If I have the opportunity to work there I won't miss it!!

Their are alot of docks / boat stations near Amsterdam CS, which one do you mean? As far as I know nothing got demolished axcept a few small building behind the central station. They are reclaimed so some land, it that what you meant?

The Spanish architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz have succeeded in carrying out their brief to make the Rijksmuseum suitable to receive millions of visitors and to modernise it to meet 21st-century standards. They were also to bring back the clarity of the original design by P.J.H. Cuypers, increase the visibility of the collections and make the museum attractive to a wide audience. The result in 2008 will be a transparent, open museum.

The choices made by the government and the Rijksmuseum in the commissioning process have been incorporated into a new financial framework.

This takes into account the costs of the underground square (20 million euro), the tunnel connections and the Asian pavilion (7.5 million euro all together), and incorporates the costs of moving (3 million euro). Up to 2010 a total amount of 272 million euro is involved. This also includes the construction of the new Workshop Building, the organisation of new storage space in Lelystad, the temporary accommodation of the collection and staff until 2008 and the cancellation of current leases. The total amount of 272 million euro is entirely covered within the financial framework laid down for The New Rijksmuseum.

Yes it is. Beneath the parkinglot at the bottom left cornor of the picture there's a unused subwaytunnel which will be used by the Chocolote factory and one of the old buildings on the right side will be used as main entrance.

Well the Leidseplein theatre is not really visible from the Leidseplein, it's located in a narrow streat near the square.

This is being built in a narrow street behind the Leidseplein, where Melkweg discotheque is situated, in front of New Splash Gymclub and won't be visible from the square itself - or at least won't have an impact on the monumental front of the building.
This backstreet was always dirty and ugly. I believe it will look much better when re-developed.
In this place there was already a modern building stuck to the theatre. I'm not sure how "modern" it was - maybe from the 60's. So they only destroyed an ugly box here.

Amazing project! It is good to develop mosques who will fit in with there seroundings! I would like to see this keind intergration more often! And the other projects are great aswell!

The architecture of the Mosque and surrounding houses is based on an Amsterdam architecture called the "Amsterdamse School" (Amsterdam school).
The design really fits whitin Amsterdam and that is really good, Amsterdam is allready multicultural for over 600 years and it has always been done this way. The Jewesh Portugese Synagoge is also in "brick-style". Their are also modern examples, like a new Jewesh synagoge on the South-Axis which architecture looks alot like the UN-studio and Vinoly also on the South-Axis.
I think it's really important a city keeps his own style, most city's have "international architecture" which i really dislike!

Construction for the Amsterdam Symphony has also started, tower 1 will go up first. From looking to the digging workit seems they are also going to build the Hotel, which is a smaller building.

Its a shame Amsterdam is using its giant volume in low\mid rise crap......keep it up or mid or low......ty for the updates !i love the Symphony project ...ofcourse its not high enough> but who gives a shit huh...mmm.....its a great project:)
