sandro_ December 10th, 2011, 07:44 PM Georgia - Mikheil Saakashvili: Our country will be a big discovery for many of you
I’m incredibly honored to be here with all of you.
This place is very special, because if any other place reminds me of Batumi, it is Cannes and Nice.
Did you know that Batumi was built by same architect as the city of Nice? He decided to stay in Batumi where he lived out the rest of his days.
Batumi has a rich architectural history. You can see beautiful 19th century architecture stands side by side with new, innovative architecture from the brightest Italian, British, German and Georgian architects.
Georgia is a tourist destination where on the same day you can ski the Caucasus and swim in the Black Sea. The temperature in Batumi differs from that in Cannes by only 0.5 degrees. That means that summer lasts for almost 6 months—6 months of warm sea water and, I think, it is the only place on the Black Sea coast that has palm trees and such wonderful beaches.
But this is also a historic place of amazing development and amazing change within the last five years. When I became the President of Georgia, Georgia hosted 120 thousand tourists a year.
Guess what? Last year, we had 2 million tourists, and this year we’ll get almost 3 million. Next year we expect to get—we’re looking forward to—4 million, and 5 million the following year. That’s the forecast.
Georgia has the potential of attracting 10 million people each year, and that’s a big change.
The reason why it’s so special is its ancient culture. The Golden Fleece comes from Georgia; Jason and the Argonauts traveled all the way to Georgia to retrieve it from the local Colchis civilization. We also have the distinction of having Christianity as early as the 4th century AD. We have churches in Georgia that were built in the 4th, 5th, 6th—lots of them. Everywhere you go in Georgia will find many UNESCO monuments. Additionally, there are an amazing 6 climatic zones in Georgia.
Throughout the country, young people are fluent in English because, as of right now, we’ve invited 10 thousand Americans and other native speakers to teach English in Georgia.
Georgia is host to many other languages and Batumi could be mistaken for any city in Europe. Its famous hospitality also helped Georgia act as the “Soviet Riviera” during Soviet times.
There are more Georgian restaurants in former Soviet countries than all other ethnic foods combined. This is the place to be.
So, we developed the city of Batumi and we developed the town of Anaklia, with its white sand beaches. It’s just like Nice and Cannes, because they are almost the same distance from each other.
Basically, Batumi is like urban Nice and Cannes is characterized by its boulevard similar to the slightly longer one in Anaklia.
We are now developing a new town called Lazika, with a new, grand design, to bolster our economic and touristic potential. We are building it near the ski resort in Mestia, where you can actually ski all summer long. I took Alberto Tomba there—who, by the way, is planning to open a school in his name—in August to ski. Then we drove an hour and a half down from the mountains and dove into the Black Sea, which was very warm at that time.
Mestia has 4 hundred some towers dating from the 10th and 11th centuries. Actually, you could think of Georgia as the Dubai of the middle ages. So all I’m saying here is that Batumi has amazing potential for development and it means a lot that we are part of this Bigger Diamond Awards System. I think it’s a good start for our city.
All of the time, energy, and money invested in recent construction have paid off. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you back in my country: a undiscovered gem that most of you have not yet had the pleasure to experience.
If you like pioneering new travel destinations, discovering long-kept secrets, visiting a very, very special place, please come see and visit us, and you will return home with unforgettable experiences and lifelong memories.
Thank you!

Saakashvili promises full rehabilitation of Akhaltsikhe
By Salome Modebadze
Tuesday, December 27
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili compared the ongoing construction activities in the country with the situation in the 11th-12th centuries in Georgia. Opening a renovated administrative building in Akhaltsikhe, Samtskhe-Javakheti, the President thanked the local people for their trust in his team. Calling the people “collective Queen Tamar and King Davit the Builder” Saakashvili emphasized people’s high level of participation in the ongoing renovations in the region.
He recalled meetings with the Akhaltsikhe population during the previous presidential election campaign in 2007 when the people promised to help him in rebuilding the country. “Lots of people claimed that this epoch would end before it had even begun,” said the President, stressing that he would never stop building up the country regardless of the criticism of others.
Saakashvili further spoke of the importance of Akhaltsikhe to the whole country. Promising to restore its significance he called the town “the main pride” of the country. Mentioning how the town had been used as a comfortable base for various “military games”, Georgia’s President underlined that since the Russians left Samtskhe-Javakheti in 2008 the place had regained its historical importance. Promising to restore Akhaltsikhe’s fortress as the “main crown” of the region’s “medieval heritage” Saakashvili said his now-experienced team would start restoration activities soon.
Considering the experience gained from previous restoration projects in the country (Signaghi, Batumi, Mestia) the President promised to ensure better living standards for people living in the region. “When all the pro-Russian forces backed up by foreign special services had gathered to damage the country (referring to the opposition rallies in November 2007) you told me that we would build the country together and now we have succeeded,” Saakashvili said, confident that the “dark powers of the past” won’t be able to return Georgia to an epoch of hopelessness. “Because you are the Georgian people who didn’t let them destroy the country and kill the hope,” the President addressed the Akhaltsikhe population.
Stressing how they would accomplish things which haven’t been done in the country for eight whole centuries, Saakashvili said that even the high level of poverty won’t prevent the ruling United National Movement (UNM) from following their dream.

Kokoity January 3rd, 2012, 11:08 PM Lazika project scares Russians
03.01.12
The project of a new resort city, the construction of which begins this year in Samegrelo Region, Georgia, has scared Russians. Political analysts and media believes that Russia`s investments made in the development of Olympic Villages in the seaside resort of Sochi, will be just a waste of funds and time, as Lazika will be the project which will attract tourists in the region.
The author of an analytical article published on Russianrealty.ru website, Albert Akopyan says he sees no chances of the development of Sochi; the investments will not be profitable as the business sector has already confirmed this.
According to experts, teh hotels in Sochi will lack visitors after the Winter Olympics 2014, as the development of the seaside resort needs not only hotels, but development of tourism, shopping tours, food and wine tours, which do not work in Sochi currently.
Akopyan says Lazika will be the second success of Georgian tourism after Mestia, adding the new airport in Zugdidi grew the prospects of the resort development.
The journalist emphasizes the speed, sort and the low prices of construction business, which finally is reflected on the price of product. Akopyan says the president of the neighbor country will organize to bring international festivals to the new city of Lazika from Europe and the Black Sea states, which diminishes the prospect of Sochi development as a resort.

Reconstruction work planned for Telavi
Telavi’s central district, the main city and administrative center of Georgia’s eastern region of Kakheti, will meet the autumn 2012 with a rehabilitated and ‘charming image’.
According to Petre Kiknadze, the Governor of the Telavi Municipality, the reconstruction project in Telavi’s city center foresees the rehabilitation of main streets and the renovation of the town.
“The project aims to return more than 150 buildings to their previous state and appearance, as most of them face architectural problems and are badly damaged,” Kiknadze told Georgia Today in a phone interview.
In particular, the reconstruction work will be launched on up to ten streets including Cholokashvili, Kostava, and Anton Katalikosi Street, as well as squares and avenues. The facades of the buildings will be decorated, underground communication systems will be changed and a modern system of street lightings will be installed.
More than 70 buildings that will be rehabilitated enjoy the status of ‘cultural heritage monument’ from different historical periods, including the Palace of King Erekle II, Art Gallery and the Telavi Theatre. For this reason, architects, scholars and art historians consider Telavi as the most “medieval” city in the country.
The first archaeological findings from Telavi date back to the Bronze Age. One of the earliest surviving accounts of Telavi is from the 2nd century AD, by Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus.
Telavi became a politically important venue in the 17th century when it became the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti. By 1762, it turned into the second capital (after Tbilisi) of the United Eastern Georgian Kingdom of Kartl-Kakheti. The reign of King Erekle II, who was born and died in this city, was part of a special era in the history of Telavi.
The funding for reconstructing this historically important city was allocated by the World Bank. In total, 150 million lari have been earmarked for the rehabilitation of four cities in the Kakheti region, including Telavi, Kvareli, Sagarejo and Sihgnaghi.
The Municipal Development Fund of Georgia (MDF), which has implemented the municipal infrastructure projects in the country since 1997, will execute the Telavi rehabilitation project. The fund has already announced tenders for the reconstruction work that will start by the end of January.

Kokoity January 15th, 2012, 10:35 AM Ski season opens up for visitors in Gudauri
Ski lovers now have the opportunity to experience the 2012 winter season on the white slopes of the greater Caucasus mountain range in Gudauri, one of Georgia’s most popular ski resorts. For the new season, skiers will enjoy the renewed skiing and leisure infrastructure, including 57 kilometers of ski route runs; more than double that of last year.
Since May of 2011, five-years after Tbilisi City Hall took over management of the resort, several development projects have been completed. Among them is a new, 2,450 meter lift with 72 gondolas. The lift, built by Eagle Helicopters, a Swiss company, cost 15.6 million lari and was paid largely through Georgia’s budgetary funds.
In Gudauri, the base lift is situated 2,200 meters above sea-level and the top lift reaches 3,285 meters. The slopes are accessible via several platter lifts, moving carpets, chairlifts and cabin lifts. Within seven minutes it is possible to reach the top lift with the fastest chairlift.
Giorgi Tskhakaia, Tbilisi’s Deputy Mayor told media representatives at the opening ceremony of the new ski season that alongside restructuring, they have also created infrastructure for children.
“For beginner skiers and children there is a 400m bunny slope where they can have lots of fun,” Tskhakaia noted and added that playgrounds and moving carpets can also be found in Gudauri. Snow tubing is also one of the non-ski activities that can be experienced.
Within this reconstruction program, Tbilisi City Hall reconstructed the transportation links, rehabilitated the water supply and electricity systems, improved the resort’s internet access, arranged parking facilities for 1,000 cars and established a new office for managing waste disposal.
According to Tskhakaia, the construction of the longest gondola in the Caucasus region will be finished by the end of February. “We hope the infrastructure project will dramatically increase the resort’s capacity and that more tourists spend their ski holidays in Gudauri,” he noted.
The National Tourism Agency of Georgia, a body responsible for tourism development in the country, reports that Gudauri hosted more than 20,000 visitors (3,500 of them foreigners) in the 2010-2011 winter seasons.
The local business community hails the infrastructure development. Nino Buchukuri, owner of Gagieti, a budget, 20 bed hotel in Gudauri, told Georgia Today that “we’re delighted that a leading ski resort like Gudauri has been selected by Tbilisi City Hall to be developed in compliance with international standards.”
Gudauri has a wide variety of dining options, including snack bars and lounge restaurants to on-mountain hut-clubs with traditional Georgian and European cuisine. The resort offers an array of restaurants, fast food cafes, lounges and open-air cafes with great food, as well as various bars and clubs.
To promote safety at the resort, the ski area is patrolled by experienced ski rescue teams and in the case of any accidents, they provide emergency medical and rescue services. The 24-hour medical emergency service provides transportation to the central medical clinic by helicopter.
The ski lifts are served by an electronic ski- pass system provided by SKIDATA, a leading global supplier of access management solutions. They work on weekdays from 10am to 5pm and for late night skiers the lifts are open on Saturdays from 7.30pm to 10pm. Day ski passes cost 30 lari per person and the price for a seasonal ski pass is 500 lari.

Kokoity April 3rd, 2012, 03:13 PM Experts begin to draft concept of new resort city Lazika
03.04.12
Georgian and foreign experts have begun to work on the basic conception of a new resort city on the coast of the Black Sea - Lazika. A special conference has been dedicated to the discussion of the details of the concept - political and economic context of the new city, its constitutional status, legal and governing systems.
The working meeting was attended by the representatives of the Ministries of Economics and Justice, National Bank of Georgia, American experts and the students of the Free University.
The conference dedicated to the discussion of the concept of Lazika will last three days.
`The main goal of the conference is to determine what will be the main fundament of the development of Lazika. We want to construct an entirely new city on the Black Sea coast; no similar project has been implemented in 2000km radius around Lazika and therefore, its correct planning and projection is very important to attract largest foreign investors from around the world and we strongly believe that Lazika has a prospect to become the main engine of Georgia`s economics with a long-term condition,` Deputy Minister of Justice Giorgi Vashadze said.

Kokoity April 18th, 2012, 04:42 PM

Abastumani spa resort to be rehabilitated
09.05.12
Rehabilitation of the Abastumani resort, which was designed and constructed in teh beginning of the 20-th century, has been started. The rehabilitation project of ne of the most famous spa resorts of Georgia will be carried out in two parts. The design of the oldest part of the town will be maintained.
The resort was designed by German architects in the 20th century, and the original face of the constructions will be maintained during the rehabilitation. The project is due to be over in two years.
Georgian president arrived in Abastumani today to see the beginning of the rehabilitation works. President viewed a hew hotel which is under construction in the town and said that Abastumani will be the major tourist centre of Georgia soon.
`Mtskheta is great, Mestia is a miracle and we have many other places, but this will be the main point of tourism in Georgia, because it is one of the best in Europe. There are one or two similar resorts in Spain and Italy; there is Dubrovnik and maybe one resort in Northern Africa. We cannot yet acknowledge what a miracle is being done here,` Saakashvili said.
Earlier, Mikheil Saakashvili visited Akhaltsikhe town, where the similar project of rehabilitation was launched a year ago.

Thanks and don't be sad :( We would be happy to bid jointly but as you know Baku is currently bidding for Olympics 2020 which is itself a very difficult and responsibe issue for us. So at this moment we want to concentrate on our bid and prepare as much as possible in order to be at least shortlisted now and then let's see, we have to fight for hosting the event even though our chances are still not very high. Anyway let's hope for the best. Good luck to both of us! :cheers1:
vitaming May 16th, 2012, 04:13 AM I have to say, the Saakashvili government has very good taste when it comes to approving and implementing projects.
Often when you see new developments in former Soviet or even Asian nations, they are done in a tacky way, either too modern or cheaply restored. But nearly all of the redevelopment projects I've seen in Georgia recently seem to be careful restoration with just the right splash of modernity.
I guess it helps that Georgia has a strong traditional culture to build on. In some ways it's like seeing the exotic Byzantine east live again.
A notable exception to the above is the whole Lazika shebang which I assume his son dreamed up while playing The Sims.

Iberia why not? we added what? 2000+ rooms for 5 star hotels within the last 8 years, where we experienced a war and a recession. And in another 8 years with the help of the UEFA2020 funds we can't do more? Sochi had nothing in 2006, 80% of buildings were soviet, and now it had built 300 new buildings, just for the winter games, and they still have almost two years left. So trust me, Georgia WILL be able to not only fully develop the infrastructure in the entire country by then, but not only the host town, but every town over 5000 people will have at least one 3 star hotel in it. Tbilisi already has 3 5 star hotels, and is building another couple I think. Batumi has 2 too, building another FEW more, Anaklia has 2 5 star hotels, and kutaisi will be able to develop its hotel infrastructure. Poti Airport is due sometimes later this year, while kutaisi airport is due in 2 years. all the roads with autobahn and everything are due to be completed by end of 2018 normal time. By then Zugdidi will have its stadium rebuilt, so will kutaisi. Poti port will be totally renovated, along with its hubs, which are still owned by rakia BTW. Gori and KHashuri will also be completed, and don't forget rustavi is also building 3 hotels as we speak, imagine what will happen in the next 8 years with the extra help from UEFA
iberia May 16th, 2012, 06:45 PM first of all it is hard to compare sochi with georgias euro bid! because sochi is smaller than georgia. it's much easier to rebuild sochi and the infrastructure there! than there is a investment issue: russia with its gazprom money and the scale of the sochi bid, i mean the project with the turnover and the planned investments had been very impressive!
as you know Russia has liquid money rich local investors, companys wich are ivolved and so on, plus with this conditions they atracted easy more foreign investors! so this are 2 main points: money and size of the site. than the hotel and accommodation issue:
only tbilisi needs 15.000 more beds by 2015 if we want to atract 5 million tourists by that time and this looks very optimistic right now as tourist number is rising! so imagine there is not a qustion of 5 star hotels, a capital city needs 5 times more 5 star hotels than we do have and 10 times more 4 star hotels and 20 times more 2-3 star hotels! the same for other big citys like batumi where the situation of investments are better looking now and Kutaisi where almost nothing, and believe me realy nothing is on place! and to be honest and fair: you want to host for example the game england vs. Italy in Khashuri or Gori?! i answer for you--- no!
you are right as you mentioned the Autobahn and i hope very much a better and faster Rail way Connection between Tbilisi and Batumi, this is for sure reachable by 2020! so the only thing i wanna tell you is it's not a question about autobahn or the hotels, only the stadium issue is a hard one for georgia right now because for example the Allianz Arena in Munich had cost 340 mio. EURO to build ( wikipedia )
we could invest such money for the bid if we had better social life overall in Georgia but imagine we need at least 8 stadiums like Euro 2008 in Austria and Swiss! so it could work in case of double bid, azeris and georgia, it seemed more realistic! and than there is also a political question: georgia is very small to bid alone, look in case of Euro 2012 Poland could not bid alone, they did it together with Ukraine. and finaly the competition is very hard: turkey is bidding :) Netherlands, Belgium, bosnia-herzigowina, croatia & serbia all 3 together also very interesting from the political view, this countrys fought a war against each otherin the early 90 is.. bulgaria and romania and so on very hard rivals you understand i know! so believe me you and i would be crazy of joy if we could win but i think more realistc now is to win and get the eurovision song contest :)))) but in any case, good luck georgia!
vitaming May 16th, 2012, 10:12 PM Remember SOCAR is supporting Georgia's endeavour. The Baku Olympic bubble is going to burst eventually, I still think there's a chance of a joint bid with the deadline extended. Especially if they have extended time to recover (2014) after the Olympic announcement (2013).
Galandar May 16th, 2012, 10:23 PM Remember SOCAR is supporting Georgia's endeavour. The Baku Olympic bubble is going to burst eventually, I still think there's a chance of a joint bid with the deadline extended. Especially if they have extended time to recover (2014) after the Olympic announcement (2013).
I still hope for a shortlist for Baku on May 23 and then there is a race until September 2013 when the winner will be announced. In case Baku 2020 fails then we should definitely work on a joint bid for EURO 2020.
sandro_ May 16th, 2012, 10:40 PM @Iberia
Georgia and Turkey are the only 2 countries running offically, there are remours that a joint bid from Scotland, Ireland and wales was made 5 minutes before the expire date 15th of may, but that is not offciall information.
As for Turkey, Istanbul is running for the same olympics as baku and the IOC have allready warned them that they must make a choise. And as I see it Turkey is the big favorite and we are the underdog but, we have ower advantages and Turkey has it own advantages.
If you see what progess has been made in the last 8 years, from a coutry whitout gas water and electricity even in the capital to the country we live in now, that it is really hard to think of how ower country will look like in 8 years from now. The infrastructre and hotels is no big deal i'm sure whit or whitout Euro 2020 in 8 years we will have both of them on very high standard.
The real soccer infrastructure will be the problem, besides the stadiums every team needs its own base and there are 24 teams.
But even if we don't make it than we can bid for 2024 turkey is bidding from 2008 on, but the whole point is that till the end of 2014 when the announsment will be made that period will be a periode where HUGE progress will be made in soccer instrastrure just as we need, and I think that that is the whole point, we will make huge progress in infrastructure and even if we don't make it even than, we will keep everyting that is done in that periode.
About Scotland/Ireland and wales well they have there own problems, first uefa won't allow 3 direct quallify teams, second what to say about there intrastructure you need a fary and airplanes to get from one city to the other and third Scotland/Ireland and Wales are in huge economical problems don't forget that Ireland is almost bankrupt, while Georgia had 3% grow in 2010, 6%in 2011 and from 2012 we are expecting double diget growt.
So, now this is no dream this is might happen, and if not nobody will demolish the stadiums etc, etc, that is going to be build whitin this project.
But, Offcourse hosting it whit Azerbeidjan is ower best option I hope they get Baku2020 but if not and if uefa allows it we must switch the Georgia 2020 to Georgia-Azerbeidjan 2020 fore sure.

The monument was sculptured by a Kabardino-Balkaria sculptor Husen Kochesokov. People attending the opening ceremony dropped roses in the sea from boats exactly in the point, where the Cherkess families were forced to immigrate during the genocide.
At the same time, Anaklia is hosting an exhibition, where the secret documents and letters describing the genocide are exhibited.
The Cherkess Days also include a scientific conference ` Results of Recognition of Cherkess Genocide.

Does not compute. If they left alive, it wasn't a genocide, it was ethnic cleansing.
And it seems unnecessarily provocative. I wonder how the Georgian government would react if a monument to the Meskhketian Turk 'genocide' opened in Sarp.
tbilisky May 21st, 2012, 06:12 PM vitaming do u know the meaning of the genocide?? please read the convention about genocide the second article and read it attentively..
Article 2
"In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. "

Maybe you should read history, how was it Georgians fault what happend to the Meskhetian Turks? It was the politics of the Russian empire that did not wanted muslims near the Ottoman borders, so they replaced them whit christian armenians.
We should raise the monument of Meskhetian Turks, not in Sarpi alone but olso in Akhaltsikhe.

Cherkess still exist in their millions, like lots of other European muslim groups (including Cheveneburi) many chose to move within the Ottoman borders where they could live under protection.
I don't want to derail the discussion, the monument just strikes me as petty antagonism. Calling what was unfortunately a common event in its time a genocide to score points against Russia belittles the truly horrific extermination campaigns like the Holocaust or Rwanda.

sandro_ July 5th, 2012, 10:44 PM Georgia to invest $120 m in Lazika city construction
Thu 05 July 2012 12:00 GMT | 16:00 Local Time
Text size:
Preparatory work for Lazika construction has already begun.
Georgian authorities plan to invest 200 million lari ($120 million) in construction of the future city of Lazika on the Black Sea coast in the next four years, the Georgian National Tourism Agency says.
"The state plans to finance 20 percent of the project. The remaining funds will be attracted from private investors," the Tourism Agency said.
Georgia is negotiating with the European and Asian investors who are willing to invest considerable sums in the construction of this city.
"Preparatory work for Lazika construction has already begun. In particular, virtual 3D version of the project has been created... , the marshland is being drained, a group of architects are working on the issues connected with urban infrastructure, house of justice and roads construction have been launched," the Agency said.
The Georgian Parliament on June 12 adopted constitutional amendments associated with the city of Lazika, the source said.
According to the amendments, the status and privileges of the city will be determined by organic law. Thus, soft tax regime and most effective ways of resolving any dispute accepted in international trade practices will be established in the city.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, for the first time announced about the idea to build the country's 'second largest city' between Anaklia, close to breakaway Abkhazia, and Kulevi in the north from port town of Poti in December, 2011. The English law system would be introduced in Lazika for commercial transactions, instead of a codified civil law, which Georgia's legal system is based on. The parliamentary majority considers Lazika as a new perspective for the country development. According to the opposition, the authorities should be more concerned about existing towns.

Kokoity July 17th, 2012, 06:58 PM
