what is this?
elusive December 3rd, 2010, 08:34 AM ^^ The Najaf Cemetery, the largest in the world...it's very historical
BigDreamer December 3rd, 2010, 11:12 AM the cemetery is bigger than the old city isn't it?.. it looks so huge on google earth.
elusive December 3rd, 2010, 01:01 PM yeah something like that...
sheytanElKebir December 3rd, 2010, 06:00 PM the cemetery is bigger than the old city isn't it?.. it looks so huge on google earth.
i reckon its bigger than old and new najaf (note the google earth images are old, and there's been a lot of killing since 2004...). sadly, as well as iranians, kuwaitis and bahrainis have once again started to bring their dead to najaf again, so the cemetary is expanding massively (towards karbala).
BigDreamer December 4th, 2010, 12:01 AM I can understand that there is unique and important cultural novelty associated with the Najaf cemetery.. but I'm worried that this insane growth isn't sustainable, not to mention its using up valuable land.
wasta December 4th, 2010, 03:40 PM In my humble opinion they should ban non iraqi shia getting buried in Najaf, we cant cope with space and nor should Iraqi shia be prices out by richer non iraqi shias, thats just my opinion, however your views would be appreciated and respected
elusive December 4th, 2010, 03:45 PM they should just stop burying people there period...
wasta December 4th, 2010, 03:55 PM thats too far, for religious shia like me this is something very special, we all dream to be buried there
elusive December 4th, 2010, 04:23 PM i think every muslim would dream to be buried there but its going to take up so much land! sigh i don't know
BigDreamer December 5th, 2010, 01:24 PM I agree with all of the above posts. they really should do something about it.
once the land is given, it's impossible to retrieve.. so it's pretty much land lost forever. it's not like a building that you can demolish it when it surpasses it's lifespan..
not to mention that it costs Iraq money to maintain and upkeep these graves. this is especially a concern if the buried are not Iraqis ..
on the other hand, it's a great thing to see that many people choose Iraq as their final resting place.. this cemetery is a special place to millions of Muslims, and must be treated with utmost respect.
wasta December 5th, 2010, 11:32 PM I agree with all of the above posts. they really should do something about it.

Would it be terrible if we started to make moeny out of it?? I mean sell land to rich shia of non iraqi descent, and make them pay a one off tax to Najaf??
sheytanElKebir December 6th, 2010, 01:00 AM they already pay money for the land, as well as the cost of burial, and any other visitation costs (transport, food, hotel, airport use).
BigDreamer December 6th, 2010, 02:13 AM ^^ but no maintenance costs? doesn't anyone clean the cemetery etc?
wasta December 7th, 2010, 01:34 PM yea people do I think, it just get dusty, and i dontthink it costs alot to be honest.

fazl1991 September 15th, 2011, 06:14 PM huh? you've never been to southern Iraq?
I am from Basra and it's been about 7 years from my last visit and I didn't see a green place like this. Although I only managed to go to Basra and wasn't able to visit other parts of Iraq due to the bad security at that time so I might be completely wrong about my last statement and I really hope that I am.
sheytanElKebir September 15th, 2011, 08:20 PM you don't have to visit iraq physically. you can just google earth around the areas from Samara down to the south and see.

So true. Najaf's actually quite decent in comparison. Go to 'cities' like Kut/Samawa/Diwaniyah/Amarah now those places are pathetic. Come to think of it even our cities in central Iraq are terrible. Outside Kurdistan, the nicest cities are Mosul, Baghdad and Basra. Then it's probably Najaf/Karbala and the rest of the cities are either shitholes or semi-shitholes.
Istanbul looks amazing in that banner. But Baghdad could actually look something like that in the future. All it needs is a nice modern bridge, some high rise buildings/hotels and electricity at night!

AP PHOTO- July 10, 2012 photo shows ruins which scholars think may be from the legendary Arab Christian city of Hira, just a few hundred yards (meters) from the runway of the airport in the holy Shiite Muslim city of Najaf, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Baghdad. The site's discovery in 2007 and its subsequent neglect are symbolic of a Christianity that has long enriched this country, and is now in decline as hundreds of thousands have fled the violence that followed the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
sheytanElKebir August 5th, 2012, 02:43 AM our ancestral hometown.
SumerianKing August 5th, 2012, 04:07 AM what do you mean?
sheytanElKebir August 5th, 2012, 11:36 AM my father's family trace their history back through Kufa to hira.
SumerianKing August 5th, 2012, 01:28 PM thats very nice. You probably go back to a christian tribe. then converted to islam, then converted to athiesm. whats next for you?
sheytanElKebir August 5th, 2012, 01:45 PM our family only converted to islam recently (19th century!) and "joined" one of the main "tribes" during the ottoman-wahabi wars for protection... like many urban families of the time.
SumerianKing August 5th, 2012, 02:28 PM hmm very interesting to know.
Al-Hashimi August 5th, 2012, 02:37 PM Are we talking about Al-Hirah?
If so that's an old town of the Lakhmids.
But I have a hard time believing that most people in that area first converted to Islam 200 years ago. I mean the rest of Southern Iraq was majority Muslim since over thousand years before the time of your tribes conversion to Islam.
Anyway, so you are saying that most inhabitants of Kufa were Christians less than 200 years ago?
Interesting but it's the first time I hear about this.
sheytanElKebir August 5th, 2012, 02:42 PM no. most families were not urban. so only a small minority were still christian by the 18th century. But certainly at the end of the abbasid period the vast majority were still christian and jewish... much of the conversions happened over periods of strife where jizya and other oppressive measures forced people to convert to islam and the various conflicts forced people to seek protection by joining arab bedu tribes. its a process that happened over a number of centuries during the "dark ages" of Iraq... 14th - 19th century.
OTOH the "migrant arab" families from hejaz (like my mother's family) were always muslim and the local Iraqis (for whatever reason!) wanted to emulate and copy these migrants and looked up to them as "superiors"... I understand that the dark-ages of Iraq 14th-19th century pretty much destroyed our people's self-confidence and pride.
Al-Hashimi August 5th, 2012, 02:56 PM Do you have any sources that confirm what you are saying?
How many urban tribes are we talking about? What was the population of Kufa 200 years ago? The population of Iraq was about 3 million 100 years ago - with the vast majority living in Baghdad, the north, Basra and all the major cities around Baghdad.
So I guess Kufa had a population no bigger than 50.000 200 years ago of which how many were truly urban? 10-20 percent?
What? Iraq was majority Muslim and was since the Abbasid Caliphate. There were Jewish and Christian minorities and other smaller minorities that still live in Iraq to this very day but this was the case all over the Arab world, even in KSA!
Iraq was the center of the Muslim world and is only second in importance to Hejaz historically!
That's a bad example since the Banu Hashim tribe were not even bedouin (nomadic) generations before Prophet Muhammad (saw) was born but merchants in Hejaz.
Not sure what you mean by "superior" but I don't think the local population had anything to envy their fellow Arabs arriving from nearby regions given the already huge Islamic traditions in Iraq and it's significance in Islam.

No it's like an open space (mostly empty) and usually it's fitted with marble stone (marmar) for the floor of the Sahan and eventually most of it wii be covered with Persian rugs. It's used for praying in groups or individually and other activities. It also contains places for other services such as water for wuthou and etc.

ya3ni what sort of question is that???
Al-Hashimi September 21st, 2012, 02:51 PM I said probably yes but I am not 100 percent sure. After all it is an Shi'ah mosque. What I meant was whether Sunnis also pray there or if that is rare. I know that you can enter any mosque regardless of sect.
sheytanElKebir September 21st, 2012, 03:01 PM you will be happy to hear that all my sunni relatives have been there many times and were not kidnapped or murdered.
Al-Hashimi September 21st, 2012, 03:23 PM Well I was not aiming towards that. Nor expecting such a scenario to happen in the first place. I am more interested in hearing whether it's normal for Sunnis to attend prefers in the masjid as well?
sheytanElKebir September 21st, 2012, 03:33 PM sunnis only avoid these places during the major "pilgrimage" times of the year. otherwise in karbala / najaf every thursday afternoon thousands of people from ramadi, falluja, baghdad etc... go to visit.
Al-Hashimi September 21st, 2012, 03:57 PM Yes, I know that and it's pleasing. What I am aiming towards is whether it's regularly attended by Sunnis as well or just occasionally? I am talking about the Masjid al-Kufah and not Karbala or Najaf.

When I was at Imam Ali (AS) earlier this year, I saw a Sunni brother praying with us. It was really nice tbh.
Also, in Karbala especially, there are LOADS of taxis from Anbar, Tikrit (a few I've seen), although I'm not sure if they are Sunni brothers driving them.
Also, any person is allowed in Masjid al-Kufa - they don't ask what sect when you enter (I don't think they ask that at any mosque).

In this photo taken in Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, a man walks past empty shops in Najaf, Iraq The plunge in Iran's currency is proving bad for business in neighboring Iraq. Fewer Iranians are now able to afford visits to Shiite holy sites here and elsewhere in Iraq because each dollar or Iraqi dinar now costs roughly three times what it did as recently as last year. That has pushed the price of organized tours up sharply and made Iraqi merchants far less willing to accept rials as payment. (AP Photo/Khalid Mohammed)

sheytanElKebir January 31st, 2013, 10:33 AM that's because kirkuk had 3x more rain than najaf.
alshawi1234 January 31st, 2013, 04:33 PM ^^
I know, but its a typical Iraqi way to alter the facts
sheytanElKebir January 31st, 2013, 08:06 PM I know that... and I hate the retardation of all these things. Iraqis are incapable of looking at things honestly. such stupid "comparisons" by people who think they're "smart" is woeful... sadly its a trait that's going from strength to strength. its either a najafi/southerner saying "look at how much better we are organised now compared to before" or its done by someone saying "look at how the shroogis are oppressing the good provinces of Iraq"... both perspectives being completely illogical as well as factually inaccurate.
alshawi1234 January 31st, 2013, 09:41 PM telling half of the "truth" is being used widely by everyone these days, the Iraqi politicians are a really good example.
The intelligent people usually ignore it when it suits their interest and the ignorant people believe it. Sadly the majority of the people are ignorant...
haiderpass February 1st, 2013, 01:24 AM lol, funny thing is, whoever made that photo obviously has mo idea of the level of retardedness/corruption associated with the drainage system currently under construction in Najaf.
Practically everyone in Najaf knows about it.
The original plan (in 2010) was that all the newly laid pipes would be connected to a new water treatment facility located in Kufa (right next to the old one, which for some bizarre reason they dont want to rehabilitate), this project was costing us hundreds of millions of dollars, however, midway through the project, they realized that the land was becoming more and more elevated as they reach Kufa (yes, they're so retarded they never even did the necessary geological surveys), so now what they're doing is, abandoning the entire previous works and starting again from scratch, this time, the water treatment facility is going to be located on the bahr il Najaf side, in the complete opposite directions and pipes are being directed towards there.
This is just they're biggest blunder with this project. others include:
- allocating approximately $31 for German pipe joints, but instead installing cheap Iranian variants worth no more than $10 Max, which are already already breaking down.
- No proper coordination between subcontractors installing the pipes, resulting in pipes not aligning up in the designated positions.
- All the suburbs being dug up simultaneously, yet construction only occurring at approximately 10% of them at the same time, with the rest having to wait 1 or 2 years before construction reaches them.
- Contractors reselling their contracts to others while pocketing a portion of the intended sum, resulting in the end product being substandard and not worth half the intended sum.
i could go on and on about this, but you's get the point, Najaf may look like its improving on the outside, but its mostly private investment where anyone with a plot of land on a main road is building a 3+ story hotel, market, etc.
They provincial council is still as corrupt as ever and the people of Najaf already know this, its just people outside of Najaf who dont see this.
