Less aesthetic heartburn, but where's the spice?

For better and for worse -- mostly worse -- McDonald's has had a profound impact on the American landscape. Its golden (actually yellow) arches, it's said, are a brand icon more recognized than the Christian cross. Its cookie-cutter buildings have turned vast stretches of suburbia into seas of asphalt. Its very name has become synonymous with garish design, which is why we call those bloated houses that cram far too much square footage onto tiny suburban lots "McMansions."

So the new, Starbucks-like look that McDonald's has rolled out in this classic Middle American test-market tickles the design palette in a way that no knock-your-eyes-out architectural whammy by Frank Gehry or Santiago Calatrava ever will. We visit museums by those architectural stars, but we practically live in McDonald's. The company estimates that more than 25 million people a day eat at its U.S. outlets.

And now McDonald's is playing a controversial, high-stakes game of architectural catch-up, transforming its harsh, plastic-heavy interiors into soft, earth-toned places where you might linger with your laptop in an upholstered chair beneath a stylish pendant light. On the outside, McDonald's wants to ditch those screeching ketchup-red and mustard-yellow mansard roofs for a more muted look. By year's end, assorted aspects of the makeover -- mostly changes to interiors -- will be in place in about 6,000 of McDonald's 13,700 U.S. outlets, including several in the Chicago area. They are part of a global "re-imaging" program that includes other new designs the fast-food giant has built for its 31,000 outlets worldwide .

While Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald's is touting the changes as the inevitable path to the 21st Century, a visit to four of its showcase restaurants in Columbus and its suburbs reveals a decidedly mixed outcome, which can be summarized this way: McDonald's new look serves up less aesthetic heartburn, but it needs a strong shot of architectural spice.

McDonald's probably reached their peak in Canada around 1985. Since then, their market share has gradually declined. It's considered a bottom of the barrel burger joint, but I believe they are still #1 in burgers just slightly ahead of A&W and Harvey's. They lost their #1 position in fast food to Tim Horton's around a decade ago. Tim Horton's is about double the size of McDonald's in this country.

Mcdonalds brand is failing badly against Lithuanian restaurant chain "Cili pica", which offers lower prices, better sorroundings, a far greater assortment (everything, from pica and lithuanian cuisine to chinese and seafood), better service, and the food quality is just ages ahead. Mcdonalds has only a few joints left in Lithuania and is starting to loose to "Cili pica" in neighbouring countries as well.

Sao Paulo, Brazil — Sunday, Brazil history will be made, as the congress “Har Sinai” directed by Rabbi Ilan Ende the brother of the Rosh Yeshiva of the Chabad Yeshiva in Sao Paulo transformed the “McDonalds” branch in the heart of Sao Paulo into a Kosher restaurant for a day.

The organizers told us that it was unbelievable and that they don’t ever remember in the history of Brazil nor in the history of the entire continent that 13,000 McDonald dinners strictly kosher were sold in 11 hours alone to over 5000 people who flooded the place.

The venture was initiated to promote a capmaign of making Jews aware of the importance and significance of eating only Kosher food. It started over a month ago when Rabbi Ilan Ende, a teacher in the Talmud Torah Lubavitch in Sao Paulo and director of the project “Atid” in cooperation with the shaliach Rabbi David Azulai, Rabbi of the Har Sinai synagogue came up with the idea of opening a branch of the giant American food chain McDonalds in accordance with the strict kosher requirements so Jews would be able to eat kosher even for one day only.

With the help of the Jewish owners of giant companies in Brazil – Mr. David Cohen, Mr. Elias Victor Nigri, Meir Nigri, the Cohen family and others this endeavor started to take shape and develop. It didn’t take long before it became the talk of the town in the Jewish community, they was very excited about it.

Rabbi Shamai Ende, the Rabbi of the Chabad community in Sao Paulo and head of the the Lubavitcher Yeshiva in the city who is responsible for issuing the Kosher cirtificate had seven G-d fearing supervisors working for him, the leader of the team is Rabbi Yosef Levaton.

A month before the restaurant opened the supervisors checked and double-checked the most minute details that concerned the opening of the new kosher branch: cleaning and “koshering” the utilities, making sure that the salads, bread, shechita and all other ingredients met the strict standards of a kosher certifcate.

Finally, last night 10 AM, the first kosher McDonalds on Prime Lima Street in Sao Paulo, Brazil opened its doors to customers. It didn’t take long before what started out as a regular working day turned into an unbelievable site in Brazil.

Hundreds of Jews, Chassidim, non-chassidim, religious as well as secular Jews stood on line to buy a kosher Mac. Even Jews who normally don’t eat Kosher were seen waiting patiently in line to buy kosher food.

Police directing traffic and EMS were at hand to maintain order. But the Lubavitcher, bochurim of the yeshiva took advantage of the situation and set up booths alongside the long lines and put on Tefilin with thousands of Jews.

The owners of the store compared their sales with the sales of the non-Kosher McDonalds and found that 8000 Big Mac kosher sandwiches were sold in just the first few hours after opening. One customer ordered 59 sandwishes and the owners were forced to announce that they won’t sell more than 10 to a customer.

Outside a big container of water was placed for people to wash before the meal. Even at 8 PM before closing the lines were still big.

After closing the owners found that in the course of 11 hours 13,000 kosher meals were sold to 5000 Jews in Sao Paulo.

His brother , Rabbi Ilan Ende added “today’s success proved itself and it looks like they will open the Kosher branch every Sunday and within time it will turn in to a daily kosher branch.

There are a number of really fascinating ones in Las Vegas and surrounding area that I worked on about 5 years ago.


Such as the one pictured below, in Boulder City which is just Southeast of Las Vegas/Henderson. I did a bit of the electrical work in and around it. Also helped get another older McDonalds restaurant that once was right beside it ready to tear down. Inside there is over $50,000 USD worth of crystal chandeliers and lighting fixtures, a fireplace, a widescreen TV, leather chairs and a high tech playplace. The worst part was installing the large chandelier over the fireplace because it alone was worth around $25,000.

I haven't touched McDonald's in Paris. There are so many places to eat it was simply not worth it. Exactly the same goes for London, Rome or Barcelona and other cities across Europe. They were like street lamps for me, pass by them and not notice them. Where I live, McDonald's is an option when you don't have anything else to choose from, like @ 3 A.M. with everything closed up except their Drives.
I remember they opened one in I don't remember what Quarter and the people vandalized the place and it closed down after that :D.

First time I've seen this thread...

McDonald's has come a long way in the design of it's stores from it's standard yellow and red motif a few years back.

I like, that McDonald's changed their standard design and the buildings now are quite different.

Unfortunately, in my country, Lithuania, McDonald's is lame as they opened only 9 restaurants in 20 years when Hesburger opened more than 30 in just 3 years after entering Lithuania. McDonald's- lame, fail :lol:
